  1. Give me a fucking break. on Clinton To Take On Rockstar · · Score: 1

GTA is rated M, or 17+. It says so right on the box. This is NOT a game for kids.

Believe it or not, there are many parents out there who don't allow their kids to watch movies or play games because they have either too much violence or too much sex. They don't want to expose their kids to what in their view is not a good influence. They use the ratings on movies and video games, and often check out the material themselves.

They know that children need guidence and that the kids may not understand many of the things that seem obvious to adults.
Sure, there are some parents who believe that children should be exposed to everything and draw their own conclusions about their experiences, but these people are a minority.

So the "This is America, violence is OK but sex is not" statement simply isn't true when it comes to most parents. It's used by politicians who are trying to appeal to a specific demographic.

The article feels like it's a review of an old Sims game. "Feed, water, go to the can, etc" sounds a lot like a game I could play right now, with better graphics, AI and sound.

    From the article:

Right - diddly/squat. 3000 games being trades, say every week, and Nintendo doesn't get a single red cent out of around $60,000 (or more!) being swapped about. [...]
Now, that $60,000 a week can go right into Nintendo's pocket, a good application of the long tail right there.

Sure, but how much of that will Nintendo have to pay for servers and their maintenance per week? These games have to be hosted, credit card (or equivalent) transactions have to be processed and there are many other expenses.

The 60 grand is not profit; it's gross income. My guess is that Nintendo wouldn't do it if it came at a loss, so they'll probably end up making some money, but not the 3 million the author talks about. Besides, three million is not a very insignificant figure if you look at their profits for one quarter. (Yes, it's a slightly dated article).

By offering the library of older titles, Nintendo simply adds another feature to their console. It's an enticing one, for sure, but it competes against consoles that offer other features (such as the ability to stream media). The features are just one aspect consumers consider when purchasing a system, and it looks like we'll have a nice choice this time around.

From what I understand the network connection is fairly simple to set up - my sister did it on her own, and he's not very computer literate.

The XBox interface is useful when you want to use it to listen to some music or to edit settings. The Gamecube also has an interface which appears if you turn it on without a disc in the machine. You can set the date, time, delete saved games off the memory card, copy data, adjust sound output, etc.

Consoles have gotten to a point where they need a way for the player to access certain features, which the interfaces allow you to do. However, they still allow you to "pop in the disc and boom, you are instantly playing".

A little more on topic, I notice that the music player still doesn't have a fast forward button. You can skip tracks back and forth, but no fast forwarding to your favorite part. Get a clue, Microsoft.

Why does everyone blast Nintendo for doing what Apple has been doing for years? Both companies produce a very solid product and don't want their thunder and/or hard work stolen by a bunch of copycats.

Their goal is not the domination of their particular market; instead, they focus on being profitable companies. I say kudos to them for having the balls to make something that works well, is fun and intuitive to use AND still be able to sell enough of it to make some money. And if it takes some secrecy to bring their products to the market, then I'm all for it.

Scrapping an LCD screen because of one dead pixel at the QC stage is out of the question; however the screens could be sorted and the good ones could be sold at a slight premium. After all, how long does it take to perform a dead/stuck pixel test? 5 seconds? 10?

And if a new technology comes along and solves this problem, then hooray. But until then, give me the choice of buying a screen that doesn't have defects.

I don't care if they're not touching or not, if they work above 30 degrees Celsius or when submerged in KY jelly. If I'm buying a new car there are no dents or scratches on it, so why should your screens be any different?
