Crichton botched the science that he was trying to criticize. I think that's a much stronger condemnation than the presence or absence of any given piece of university-derived parchment. The first article disputes his 0.8C prediction, pointing out that the trend he attributes his predicted rise to should actually have a bit of a cooling effect. Here is a list of other, specific rebuttals to Crichton (primarily his novel "State of Fear"), in case you're interested.

I followed your links, they were all critiques of his science-fiction book, and none were critiques of his talk to Congress. Science-fiction books are supposed to be wrong on some accounts. Aren't they? Isn't there supposed to be a measure of fiction within them? Isn't fiction something that's made up? And isn't something that's made up -- something that's very likely to be wrong -- in some way -- somehow? Name me a couple of science-fiction books that haven't "botched" Science to some degree, I'd be curious to know what you'd find. These books probably exist, but I really doubt they would be considered "science-fiction" in the general sense of the term.

Degrees in medicine and biology do not make one an expert on climate change.

That's the thing, he never even claimed to be an expert on climate change. His talk to Congress was on "the politicization of Science", a pretty decent talk you're either unwilling to read, or unwilling to critique. The guy did a Post Fellowship on Public Policy. He's critiqued his own field, Medicine. Your implied assertion, that a published scientist in one or two scientific disciplines, and a Post-Fellow in Public Policy, shouldn't be allowed to do Public Policy critiques across other scientific disciplines, is scary. Sometimes, some of the best critiques come from outside the inner academic sanctum of a particular field (although that's not always the case, obviously).

And may be, if he had arrived at the committee hearing, and entered a copy of his science-fiction book -- as *his* testimony, then you'd have a point. That being said, he didn't do that. He gave a short talk on "the politicization of Science", a written copy of which I already gave you the link to.

The third was when he wrote State of Fear and testified before congress. I never read the book, but just to watch the kind of anti-intellectuals like Inhof invite a science fiction author to be regarded as an expect on climate change.

And here is the educational background of Michael Crichton. That being said, don't just rely on his educational background. And don't rely on the fact that he was seen testify in front of an idiot. His talk speaks for itself. It's quite short, and to the point.

Crichton graduated summa cum laude from Harvard College, received his MD from Harvard Medical School, and was a postdoctoral fellow at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, researching public policy with Jacob Bronowski. He taught courses in anthropology at Cambridge University and writing at MIT. Crichton's 2004 bestseller, State of Fear, acknowledged the world was growing warmer, but challenged extreme anthropogenic warming scenarios. He predicted future warming at 0.8 degrees C. (His conclusions have been widely misstated.)

Crichton's interest in computer modeling went back forty years. His multiple-discriminant analysis of Egyptian crania, carried out on an IBM 7090 computer at Harvard, was published in the Papers of the Peabody Museum in 1966. His technical publications included a study of host factors in pituitary chromophobe adenoma, in Metabolism, and an essay on medical obfuscation in the New England Journal of Medicine.

I don't know the details of what you're trying to accomplish here, so I can't comment on the legality, but it sounds like you think there are some issues, and you _and_ your boss need to discuss it with your company's lawyer (if you have one.) And you need to explain to your boss that terms of service can be legally binding, and can have copyright issues, and also that web-based data providers not only change data formats enough that your lost programming time might cost more than buying the data you need, but also that they can look for automated scraping and hand you bogus results.

The robots.txt files were originally designed to tell robots to stop doing heavy-duty queries on sites that couldn't handle it, but also to keep outsiders (especially spammers) from abusing content. And your code needs to follow robots.txt, because many many sites have robot traps that do unfriendly things to unfriendly visitors ("Nice lookin' robot you got there - be a shame if anything happened to it!") - or do userfriendly things to them.

Small collisions that do not harm people (regardless of what type of car they are in) cause massive damage to "modern" cars, and little damage to older cars.

If you make $100k in the US, you'll spend (burn) 37% of your income in taxes and SS. Scroll down for the tax chart. SS is 15.3% of the first 102k or so. Anyway. the government will take your taxes AND the SS and spend it on whatever crap it wants. Then, when all the baby boomers who spent rather than saved the SS surpluses retire, they will tell us younger folks that SS needs to be raised to 30% and that it's fair because they paid into the system. Of course the part they will be neglecting is that they didn't really pay into the system, they paid and then spent on other purposes every extra nickel rather than setting it aside for retirement.

"We used to laugh at the old Soviet Union idea where everybody reported everybody else," said Leahy. " ... We don't need to have it happen here. "

The Vermont Democrat, who chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee, said he will challenge Attorney General John Ashcroft on the need for TIPS when Ashcroft appears before the committee next week.

Federal officials are releasing little information about the program. But the Web site, www.citizencorps.gov, indicates Citizen Corps is a component of the president's USA Freedom Corps program introduced by Bush in his State of the Union address in January that called on Americans to donate 4,000 hours of volunteer time.

"Citizen Corps creates opportunities for individuals to volunteer to help communities bring together a network of volunteers and first responders at the local levels," Debbie Garrett, a spokeswoman for the Federal Emergency Management Agency in Washington, told the Reformer Tuesday.

One of the five parts of the Department of Justice Program includes Operations TIPS, which the Washington Times described Tuesday as "a national reporting pilot program scheduled to start next month in 10 cities, with 1 million informants -- or nearly 4 percent of Americans -- initially participating in the program."

while ashcroft started this (and he's now gone, thank god!) the TIPS programs seems to still be covert and alive.

in the last 2 or 3 years, I've noticed a LOT of snooping by my apartment management. practically every 3 months there is some 'reason' to enter my apartment. even though I quote them calif civil code sect 1958 (which I've almost memorized, by now) they find other ways to get around it. mostly its a 'fire hazard' or 'fire inspection' which is the apartment equiv of 'think of the children' or 'terrawrist(tm) scares'. if you say 'fire hazard' you can force your way in, even without any cause or warrant. I even called a few lawyers to check on this and they advised me that, while technically I have a right to 'quiet enjoyment', the landlord can ALWAYS find local ordinances that let him come into my place.

for over 10 yrs, I've lived in peace and mostly at the same address. in the last 2-3 yrs, though, the spying has grown 10x or more.

search around for 'operation TIPS' and you will be surprised what you see. its real and its even a citizens group that CAN USE LETHAL FORCE (non-police units, mind you) if they even THINK there is a 'just cause' for homeland 'defense'.

I think we can agree people manufacturing fake heart medicine is a bad thing; and that may have been the selling point.

However, "SEC. 511. LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT GRANTS." does the following:

"(a) Authorization- Section 2 of the Computer Crime Enforcement Act (42 U.S.C. 3713) is amended-- (1) in subsection (b), by inserting after `computer crime' each place it appears the following: `, including infringement of copyrighted works over the Internet';

I sure hope there aren't any congressmen who are violating the terms of CC or GPL. And can you imagine their outrage when their child downloads some songs and they have to forfeit that fancy new laptop? I mean, if enacted this will apply to congressmen, senators, even presidents, right?

People (read: vendors) now frequently refer to flash storage as superior when IOPs are the main issue.

From what I've been able to discern this is actually true only in read-mostly applications and applications where writes are already in neat multiples of the flash erase block size.

If you're doing random small writes your performance is likely to be miserable, because you'll need to erase blocks of flash much larger than the data actually being changed, then rewrite the block with the changed data.

Some apps, like databases, might not care about this if you're able to get their page size to match or exceed that of the underlying storage medium. Whether or not this is possible depends on the database.

For some other uses a log-oriented file system might help, but those have their own issues.

In general, though, flash storage currently only seems to be exciting for random read-mostly applications, which get a revolting performance boost so long as the blocks being written are small enough and scattered enough. For larger contiguous reads hard disks still leave flash in the dust because of their vastly superior raw throughput.

Vendors, however, make a much larger margin on flash disk sales.

I'm not sure of the credibility of this site but the picture there sure looks like him at a younger age, and the bio information says he lives in San Diego and is a member of the republican party. Additionally, if you use the Google cache page, it says that his real name is "Tony".

Regardless of whether it's him or not, people change. We've all done stupid things when we were young. I just hope that, if he's confronted about it, he doesn't try to lie. Hell, he can put it the same way Clinton did when people asked if he smoked marijuana. "I cracked software but didn't distribute it". That last part is a joke. :-)

Two academic management researchers performed a detailed scientific study about Debian Project governance and social organization from the management perspective.

The study analyzed 13 years of Debian Project history, interviewed some Project participants and previous Leaders, and carefully observed patterns.

The open nature of history, registered at discussion lists archives and irc logs, meetings reports, helped a lot during the data collection phase.

The study is VERY interesting as scientific analyzed HOW an open source project survived, evolved and flourished during 13 years, overcoming many troubles only challenged by long term BIG communities, reaching a solid institutional foundations to resolve disputes.

The latest revised version, published at the Academy of Management Journal, Oct 2007, Vol. 50 Issue 5, p1079-1106, 28p; (AN 27169153), is copyrighted and can not be published here.

and NAFTA clearly shouldn't apply when you are destroying the environment to undercut your competitors.

Do you really think that the US was imposing duties for environmental reasons? Seriously?

Can't argue with you about the government's action re: the preservation of the spotted owl though. I'm not a big fan of North America's lack of respect for the environment as a whole. Then again, I could be doing a hell of a lot more personally.

According to the link below, you first have to disable the protection on the computer by writing to the CSRs, which can only be done from ring 0. So already have to have root access to be able to do this. Or are they trying to do something else in that link?

There are also a number of "citizen groups" out there that want to shut down wikileaks because they think it is anti-democratic. It seems a lot of them are affiliated with the guys who "hunt" terrorists online. One such blog of note is the "Civilian Irregular Information Defense Group". See this blog post here. Though they seem to be from a psychological operations bent rather than hackers.
