it is IP and exportIt is probably partially an IP issue and partially export issues.
First, I am not so sure about the issue of exporting. The world bank [google cache of PDF file], indicates that Zimbabwe mostly exports Tabacco, gold and manufactured products. Manufactured products are about 50%, and I do not know if any these are food products. They, of course, must export to pay off debts, even if it is only theoretical payments. They therefore have every right to protect their products from contamination that their customers find distasteful. As always, it is the customer, and not the supplier, who is correct. Cross contamination is not a hypothetical situation. It happens. Of course, the GM seed suppliers want this to happen so that all these pesky GM bans can be dropped and they can extract payment from every farmer in the world.
It would seem then that for cash strapped countries GM crops are dangerous. Companies that manufacture the seed do not allow the seed to be planted without payment. Furthermore, these companies have been known to send private investigators to check fields. Since these investigators are often limited to checking the edge of fields, and since the edge of fields are the most likely to be contaminated by cross pollination, quite a bit of trouble can ensue even the planter has not ever seen a GM seed. If a significant amount of GM seed were to find it's way into a country, that country could be, over time, liable for significant amounts of money. These issues are litigated seriously.
My understanding is that such a situation would threaten a nations food supply. I have read that many farmers survive only because they can replant seeds from the last harvest. Although the economics of GM seeds might make sense in countries where planting in a technology intensive process, it might not make sense elsewhere.

Re:I've read this already
They're called the "Private Express Statutes."

"The Private Express Statutes are a group of laws under which the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) has the exclusive right, with certain limited exceptions and suspensions, to carry letters for compensation." -
Re:DARPA appear to have done it already
Hrm. For some reason, copy-paste puts a few unwanted spaces in the link. Oh, well--here's a link, maybe that'll work.
Anyway, I think 11 September really kinda blurred the line between airliners and bombs. A faster airliner is a bomb in the wrong hands.

In case you wanted to know...
I easily was able to find information on Camberley Crick. Here is the story she was squaking about, available via google's cache. She also wrote this little java-based word game. In fact, she seems to be a sort of expert on word games, as evidenced by this first and only post on USENET.
Note: some of these dynamic links won't work, if you really want to, go and find all about this woman's sad life if you want. However, what is funny to me is that now this woman still has all this personal information on the internet, and she also now has an article on the NYT web site about how she hates it (available to the world of course, WITH her name)! HAH!
Some people are just plain dumb I guess. It's like publishing a book and then complaining your privacy has been violated when people read it. -
Timmy the Turtleby Camberley Crick
Once upon a time there lived a turtle named Timmy. Timmy lived with his mother and father at the bottom of a hollow tree. Timmy had no brothers or sisters.
He lived in a clearing surrounded by woods. In the clearing was a pond with rocks around it. Most of the time Timmy would swim in the pond or explore in the woods. On hot afternoons Timmy would lay on a rock and sleep. One day when Timmy was exploring he saw a beautiful bird flying gracefully in the sky. Then he thought for a moment, "Hmmm.... wouldn't it be nice if I could fly." That night Timmy dreamed about flying with the birds. He planned to make friends with them and play their games.
The next day he went to the top of a cliff and then jumped into the air. For a second he thought he was flying but he quickly fell with a big bang. The next day he had to stay in bed because he had hurt his leg so badly. He looked out of the cracks of the hollow tree and saw a frisky little squirrel sneaking around. Timmy watched the squirrel scurry around as fast as the wind. He thought to himself, "Hmmm.... I can't fly but maybe I can be quick like that squirrel." That night Timmy dreamed about scampering around in the grass and tall trees like the squirrel had done. He dreamt that he could scurry faster than the wind like a squirrel.
The next morning Timmy went to look for a squirrel. Soon he saw a little gray squirrel looking for nuts. Then he saw a dog. He knew the dog would chase the squirrel. He decided to try catching up with the squirrel because if he did he knew he would be fast. The squirrel ran. But Timmy wasn't fast enough and the squirrel zipped away leaving Timmy far behind. Now the dog was chasing Timmy. Timmy popped into his shell and stayed there. The dog circled around Timmy a few times and finally left. Poor Timmy got so frightened that he shivered all the way home. The next day Timmy saw a cat sneaking through the woods. Timmy thought, "I can't fly or run fast but maybe I can climb trees." That night he dreamed about climbing the tallest and oldest trees living.
The next morning he went to a big tree to practice climbing. First he started to walk up one of the roots. Then where the tree started going straight up he put his feet on it so that he was on his side. Then he tried to climb but as soon as he moved his feet he fell on his shell. Poor Timmy lay helplessly on his back. He started to call for help. Along came a bunny. Timmy asked, "Will you please turn me over?" The bunny did.Timmy walked home feeling sad. He kept saying, "I am no good. I can't do anything." Then he heard a little voice say, "You can do a lot of things! Suppose a big animal were chasing me. You could take me out into the middle of your pond on your back so I would be safe." Timmy looked around and saw a little gray field mouse. "Well, you're right. I could do that." said Timmy. "I wouldn't be able to do it without you, right?" said the field mouse. "Right!" said Timmy, looking a lot happier. "I may be able to run fast but I can't swim." said the mouse. "Right." said Timmy, feeling fine now.
That day he walked home thinking about what the field mouse had told him. From that day on Timmy was never jealous of other animal friends again.Story with illustrations can be found here

Re:What about greengrocer apostrophes?
You might want to look at http://www.lboro.ac.uk/departments/el/teachingzon
e /cae/coursework/reports/apostrophe.html where they specifically use "CDs" as an example of a plural that "NEVER EVER" needs an apostrophe. The confusion arises because plurals of letters and numbers do take apostrophes as in "Missippi has two p's." "Use an apostrophe and s to form the plural of letters, numbers, and signs, and for words referred to as words." (Punctuation Rules)CD is either an abbreviation of cd-rom that doesn't use periods period or it is an acronym for Compact Disc. In either case, cd has become a word in its own right in the same way that scuba has. The confusion arises because we pronounce the word as if it were just the letters and letters do take the apostrophe.

How old VCD really is ..
Everybody's arguing about how VCD is not a new format, but nobody seems to know how old it actually is. Some think it actually came out around the same time as DVD. The fellow who wrote the article thinks it's a new format. One fellow isn't sure, but thinks it might be even older, but isn't quite sure. Egh. Apparently I'm the first who actually bothered to Google it. VCD is fifteen years old. It was created in 1987. Now, was that so difficult? And as a matter of trivia, the compact disc was originally invented with video in mind.

Re:Compaq beep of death
My favorite musical warning was at this ISP I used to work at. We had an old machine that we didn't really do anything with except test out peoples dial-up accounts. One day my coworker was on the phone and the machine next to him starts playing Fur Elise. He panicked and told the customer to hold while he flipped off the computer because the music was a warning that the fan had failed. I was laughing so much. What made it great was when we found microsoft knowledge base articles on it.

Offtopic-2nd Amendment matters the most
Blame the puffy, middle aged guys named Chuck who think that the right to own firearms is the only civil libery that matters, since it's the only civil liberty you can use to make an exciting loud noise and put holes in cans.
For the most part, I agree with you, but not with this crack about firearms. If you where trolling, or being sarcastic, I'll bite regardless.
It may be the only civil liberty that matters, because as armed citizens, it allows us to preserve all the other civil liberties. The world, or our nation, is not so utopian, so full of people looking out only for their brethen, so lacking in criminals, as to allow us to disarm ourselves.
Criminals prowl our streets. But they do so with far less frequency in areas where even a 20th of the population is likely to be armed (florida-they still go after tourists- Vermont, New Hampshire, or, for the Europeans out there, switzerland.) The police have no obligation to protect you (see Riss vs. New York City)so you must protect yourself. The surest way to do that is to own a firearm, and know how to use it.
Our government is infringing on our rights more each day- being a low user number slashdotter, I'm sure you've been reading about the DMCA and it's ilk for quite some time. How long before our own government becomes as oppressive as Great Brittain was originally? Betcha it'll be a lot longer- if ever- as long as the populace is well armed. Incidentally, the United Kingdom now has the strictest gun control laws in Europe- and the highest violent, confrontational crime rate. (Google cache of Boston Globe)
Gun Restricting laws protect no one but criminals, because only honest people obey them. If someone is willing to ignore laws about theft, rape, and murder, what makes you think they'll obey gun laws?
The right to live includes the right to defend one's life effectively. This was once best done with a spear, then a sword, then a musket, now a handgun. The right to defend our lives against the lawless, and ourselves against tyranny, ensures all other rights. Without the natural right (listed, not given by the 2nd Amendment) to arms, all your other rights are disposable at the conveinance of criminals or the ruling class.

Slashdot 2012
Walking Video Game Class Action Suit Victory
The 13 surviving "walking video game" employees had a major victory in court today when Dr. Robert E. Burdick, medical expert witness for the class action suit showed that the flat panel screens used to display the games on the "walking video game" employees actually exposed its wearers to 800 times the amount of radiation as would typically be used in a dental x-ray.
Nintendo's defense panel had no comment, except to say that their medical expert would also be testifying as soon as his chemotherapy treatments permitted.
In other news, the goatse.cx troll is still actively spamming the slashdot comment boards.

Re:If I were in your shoes....(diesel, pollution)
Are there catalysts to take care of that?
Yep
Will they work with US diesel, which is higher in sulfur than what Europeans buy?
Nope :/
How do direct-injection diesels get the relatively low-soot performance that they do?
IIRC it is via very high (over 10kPSI) injection pressure, which atomizes the fuel more finely than prechambered diesels, leading to more combustion efficiency (fuel efficiency and reduced particulates)..

Car pool accessAs you noted, single drivers in dedicated natural gas vehicles (NGVs)can use the carpool lanes in California. This is a HUGE perk and not to be overlooked.
At last check, this benefit was not available to hybrid electric vehicles. Especially in a large metro area like San Francisco or Los Angeles this perk alone can pay for itself.
The California Air Resources board provides a list of vehicles eligible for the carpool lane perk - choose carefully because not all alternative fuel vehicles are eligible!
A good resource to learn more is NGV.ORG (I've linked to google's cache... this is a small box, please don't hammer our server.) which provides a list of cofunding opportunities available for natural gas vehicle owners, including tax breaks and rebates from the state of California.
Good luck in your search!

Time for a new CC vendor?
Many companies have their own branded credit cards. I wonder how many people here carry VISA / Mastercard / Amex?
If anyone doesnt like what these companies are doing, there is always an alternative.
People use credit cards because the massive lapses in security are never properly publicised and also, whenever someone steals from their card, they get the money refunded.
Basically, they have nothing to loose, and like I said, if they want privacy, there are many ways to achieve this, PrivateBuy being just one. -
Sugar causes LOTS of cancer (indirectly)Why do we not market sugar as "cancer-free sweetener?"
Because sugar does indirectly cause cancer. Fat is a carcinogen. Not just the grease you eat, but the flab you carry around, that your body makes out of refined sugar, or any sugar (including fructose) if you eat more than you burn.*
Reference
Reference "Early studies noted the association of obesity and kidney cancer among women; however, more recent studies have also found an increased risk among overweight men."
How fat can be a carcinogen:- Your body fat doesn't just sit there. It makes estrogen-like hormones. Even in guys. The more of these you have circulating, the more likely your prostate (or your breasts--yes, males too) will develop a tumor.
- It correlates with colon cancer. Cause unknown.
- Fat-soluble anything gets stored in your fat. If you have lots of fat, any fat-soluble poisons (natural or man-made) that you consume have a place to stay. Less fat, less room for stored fat-soluble molecules.
Interesting related transcript of a meeting about a weight-loss drug.
*"Once the ... monosaccharides [get] into the blood circulatory system they can pass directly into the liver, where fructose and galactose are converted into glucose. ...Excess glucose will be stored as glycogen mainly in liver and muscle cells or in form of metabolized fat in adipocytes." here and plenty more sources. -

Slashdotted? No Problem! Not sure if the site has been slashdotted or is just slow, but I was unable to bring it up. For those interested, here is the Google Cache of the xtunes page.
Personally, I think this is a vindication of Apple's strategy to keep the iPod Apple-only for a time. It kept demand to a reasonable level, allowed them to focus on Apple-only hardware, sold a lot more Macs, and in the long-term will not keep anyone out of the iPod Revolution.

Intel drools (currently; for SMP, anyway)So I can buy two Intel Pentium III Xeon CPUs at 0.7 or 0.9 GHz (which will likely not scale linearly, and thus will not give me twice the power of just one of those chips); or I can buy one Pentium IV or AMD Athlon at twice the effective clock speed and a much cheaper motherboard, etc. (Heck, I can buy an Intel Celeron at 1.7 GHz!)
To quote Robert Bruce Thompson (Google cache) from the end of May:There has been a stunning turn-around in dual-processor systems. In early 2001, most Intel processors were dual-capable, SMP Intel motherboards were widely available inexpensively, and AMD had no dual-processor solution at all. Now, the situation is almost exactly reversed. Intel's mainstream processors, the Pentium 4 and Celeron, are no longer dual-capable. If you want to run dual Intel processors, your only real choice is the obsolescent and hard-to-find Pentium III or the expensive Xeon, and Intel no longer manufactures mainstream dual processor motherboards. Conversely, all mainstream AMD processors (prior to the Athlon XP/MP silliness) are dual-capable, and inexpensive motherboards based on the excellent AMD760MP and AMD760MPX chipsets are widely available.
All trademarks are held by their owners.
P.S.: It's very strange to type "0.9 GHz"! -

When are our corporate leaders going to put away greed in favor of fiscal responsibility? They are overpaid, over-valued and over-hyped. Try these
If your interested in a drag racing vehicles try the programs from RSA, 2 1/4 mile sims, 2 dyno sims, a 4 link suspension sim, and others.
For 2 stroke applications there is TSR (google cache, the site is not working)
This site offers several suspension programs.
Here is a program/cable for a palm that's a data logger (works with OBD II and 90-95 DSM's).
But the truth of the matter all the software in the world is not worth the value of plain ol' testing and experience. If the factory raced the model car that you have see if there is a factory racing manual for it out there. It might be all you need. Along with Carroll Smith's books (A must have for any type of racing IMHO) -
Truly outrageous
Independence day allows us to look back on the sacrifices our forefathers made to keep America free. I don't appreciate seeing it trivialized to further some partisan hippy cause. "Free software" types are clearly, in many cases, not on the side of Freedom (except when it comes to smoking pot). We need only look at their response to the Microsoft "anti-trust" case, or the victim-control mentality they exhibit so often on sites like this one. I'm no fan of Microsoft, but I'm even less of a fan of government intrusion. I recommend everybody read Atlas Shrugged to see how Gates should have handled things, if he wasn't such a pansy.
Bottomline: don't trivialize independence day.
Take the opportunity to start working for real change: less government intrusion, less taxes, fewer regulations, more freedom. Those are your birthrights, secured with the blood of our ancestors. Don't let them down by falling for this hippy crap instead. -
Re:how many floppiesThe first version of Slackware was based on SLS which I used at the time. The first Slaskware 1.x used to fit on ~30 floppies as you describe, and the later versions of the distro would require ~80.
In the lot, there was always one or two floppies with bad sectors. So when we planned our install nights, it was always an event split in 2 parts! (We'd come back the following days with the missing/fixed floppies).
A quick Google search revealed that some sites have (or rather, had) kept the historic distribution here. If you look at the directory structure, the relationship with Slackware is striking (it's the same tree).

Re:GPA
It depends where you go to school: At most schools, a C is no longer average, due to grade inflation. Even at Northwestern, which is actually a fairly respectable school, the average GPA is up to 3.3. When you consider that a lot of less-than-driven students drift through large state universities, the average GPA for the real students is actually probably higher still.
