Re:WindizUpdate...
This piece of info is well hidden in their web site. They don't update their database anymore. Their last update is from around September, last year.
"The site will still be operational, but no new updates will be added."

WindizUpdate...From the site:
Why use WindizUpdate?
Not only will it keep you up to date with the latest updates from Microsoft, it will also keep software and drivers from other vendors updated. However, that functionality is currently missing.
Good reasons to use WindizUpdate
* No personally identifiable information is collected from your computer.
* No more unwanted spyware -- Microsoft Internet Explorer can finally be removed from your computer (if that were possible).
* It lists just the updates you need. If an update has been superceded by a newer one, it will not ask you to install the older one.
* Using enhanced data from MBSA, WindizUpdate will find more security patches needed for your O/S than the "other" website.
* If there is a security issue with a component that is not yet installed, it will not ask you to update it. For example, if you have not installed hyperterminal, it will not update it.
* It is not restricted to just Microsoft products. Software from other vendors can also be updated.
* Upgrading to the latest version of Internet Explorer is not considered a Critical Update!
* Works on Windows versions no longer supported by Microsoft -- Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 95
* Our plugin is not an ActiveX control.
* Integrated download manager with error detection -- you can cancel downloads at any time, and the next time you wish to install the cancelled update, it will continue from where it left off. Only corrupted sections of the file are redownloaded.
If you are still not convinced that WindizUpdate is the site for you, please check out our page titled "do we need to say any more?"
Disadvantages
* There is a delay from when new updates are released from Microsoft to when they appear on this site.
* If you're using Internet Explorer, you will need to use Microsoft's Windows Update site for updates -- this site will be of no use to you.
* You'll need to upgrade your browser if you're using MSIE 4.xx -- This site won't work, neither will Microsoft's. http://windizupdate.com/

Sure, it's not an AIO CD, but it's a great alternative to Windows Update. -
Re:MSDN Library
If it wasn't required to visit windowsupdate.com, it would be the nail in IE's coffin.
It's not required. I update Windows uzing WindizUpdate, with Firefox. Although I wonder what the switch to Silverlight will mean for them too. -
Re:I went one stage further..Reinstall.
Microsoft still host the service packs for Win2k, even if they are not making new ones. nLite will roll service packs and security updates in as well as (most) drivers.
A quick search turns up Windzupdate.
It looks like the way this works is by having a separate metabase from MS, and downloading the updates from their hosting pages instead of Windows Update. So as long as MS keep hosting Win2k files, this should continue to work, even if Windows update for Win2k gets turned off (not sure, haven't booted Win2k in months). You could presumably just rip the metadata and download ALL updates for Win2k, thus creating an installer which has updated components for all occasions, and not just the updates that you actually use (which is what you'll get by default if you run this on an installed workstation).
One problem I can see is that with enough updates, the installer might exceed the size of a CDROM. You could burn the image to a DVD, or you could buy a cheap flash thumb (1-2GB is ludicrously cheap these days) and use that. Or just make a "master" on disk and cut it down more with nLite for specific purposes. -
Re:Monopoly Mentality
If I ever have to reinstall XP though, I would probably install all the updates.
Making an update DVD with ctupdate will allow you to go from a fresh install to fully-patched without picking up any of the malware Microsoft has been pushing out lately. WindizUpdate is good for incremental updates, and it works with Firefox.

Re:Please, just take it!!
The sollution to your problem is: http://windowsupdate.62nds.com/ It was mine too until the corporate firewall started to block it.

Re:Windizupdate
You can find windows updates thru http://windizupdate.62nds.com/ I hardly use IE, and this updates through Firefox.
I just tried it here (on Linux) and I get the following message:
Unsupported Browser
Thank you for your interest in WindizUpdate
This free website allows users of Mozilla Firefox 0.9.3, Netscape 4.0, Mozilla Firebird 0.7, Opera 5, or K-Meleon 0.9, to keep their copy of Windows up-to-date. Newer releases of these browsers are also suitable.
Are they doing an OS check or something? My browser is FF 2.0.0 so it fullfills the requirements they list. -

Which is of course very neat. *cough*firefox fan*cough* -
Try Windiz update
try this

Re:This is just great!
It's a long-shot, but I've actually seen Windiz Updates fix something quite like this, and then the official MS updating worked just fine. Of course, you might just stick with Windiz afterwards
:)
http://windizupdate.62nds.com/ -
You can always use WindizUpdate, of course.

Re:"This could spell the end of Microsoft's contro
Actually Microsoft has never had control. Pirated copies of Windows have always been able to get any Windows update they push, and for those they don't push you can find all over the net. Autopatcher rolls all the Windows updates up into a package, Windiz updates lets you get them sans validation, as do a ton of other sites. Heck, you can even setup your own WSUS with one valid copy of Windows and update all your pirated copies.
This doesn't change anything, Microsoft won't care. This doesn't break activation, or generate valid ID keys, those are some things Microsoft does care about (even if it can't do anything, both of those exploits are in the wild), but not WGA. As long as WGA keeps honest people honest (a la locks on a door) it is doing its job. -
Re:WGA only catches 99% of the XP installs...
I don't like running Internet Explorer.. I feel so.. naked.
Fortunately there are some sites (http://windowsupdate.62nds.com/) that allow you to run Windows updates on Firefox. -
Re:Accept the realities
If you manually install updates by going to windowsupdate.com, it is entirely possible (though it takes about half a dozen clicks per patch) to download the patches for later use.
After a normal update run, you might check c:\WUTemp and see if the updates that were just installed are still there. I don't recall if Win2K behaves that way, but I think WinXP does. Using WindizUpdate instead of Windows Update will also save patches (useful when you have clean WinWhatever installs on different hardware and need to patch both, as you download only once).

Re:Damn Microcrap
You can get updates in Firefox, I don't know how secure the site is, but they are available. My test computer took the updates just fine, and microsoft update showed that they were updated. Haven't had any problems for over 6 mo.
Give it a try.
http://www.windowsupdate.62nds.com/
I haven't used IE ever since. -
An Alternative to Windows Update
http://windowsupdate.62nds.com/ This site downloads all the updates using their own firefox plugin. It also doesn't install WGA or checks.
-
Re:Boycott
By not using IE. Its not that hard; I have IE on both of my PCs at home, but the only thing I ever use it for is accessing Windows Update.
...and you don't even need IE for that anymore:http://windowsupdate.62nds.com/
It works with Firefox to find what updates you need, then downloads them (from Microsoft's servers) and installs them.
-
Everyone should use FireFox for system updates..
http://windowsupdate.62nds.com/
You can keep you system up2date without having to fire-up Windows Update. -
Windows Update? who uses THAT anymore??
Ever since Windows XP with that stupid phone-home-the-mothership-if-you-change-hardware thing, I haven't been running legit copies of windows. Now with WGA (Kudos to the marketing team, don't think anyone else could have come up with a better term for "screwing the users again") I can't run windows update. Sure I could use the hacks to get WU to run, but all it takes is one little tweak on MS's part to bypass them, then it's all over...
http://windizupdate.62nds.com/
It's sad when I trust a completely random website more than my OS vendor. -
Re:Up to no good
I don't know why this is moderated as a troll.
Windows Genuine Advantage already does 3 of the above mentioned things.
1) It will nag you if it thinks your not legitimate. We had a customer who had to buy an extra copy to get rid of the nagging.
2) It will prevent you from getting non-critical updates. There is a solution: http://windowsupdate.62nds.com/ (non IE browser required)
3) It will prevent you from installing add-on applications (just about any tool or utility from http://download.microsoft.com./ -
this probably won't be a problem
If you stick with the non-MSIE friendly windows update at http://windowsupdate.62nds.com/
-
This isn't even an issue...
There are other sites that host the DX update. I got the June Update from one of the sites I check daily for software updates and had no idea that I needed WGA to get it from MS. And on a grander scale, lets not forget Autopatcher and http://windowsupdate.62nds.com/ Only the meek shall perish, and that will free up a lot of bandwidth for torrents.
:) -
Re:Why punish legit users?Well,You could just go here-http://autopatcher.com/ or here-http://windowsupdate.62nds.com/. Out of the two,I prefer Autopatcher. The full version comes with all the add-ons like DirectX control panel and cleartype tuner.
Just slap the April Autopatcher full and the May update on a DVD-RW and you have an easily update able complete patch setup for Win2K/WinXP/Win2K3.So much nicer when you need to do multiple installs and don't want to hook them all to the net.
And IIRC neither the Autopatcher nor the Windiz have the WGA "Patch".Autopatcher also gives you a nice summary of the patches so you can uncheck any you don't want.
-
Re:Get updates without going to Microsoft
better still http://windowsupdate.62nds.com/ allows you to install updates even from firefox!
-
Re:Why punish legit users?
WindizUpdate (plaintext http://windowsupdate.62nds.com/) might be want you want. Download a small utility and get automated Windows updates without needing ActiveX or using MSIE. I believe you can also download and apply individual updates from the same site. -

Uninstall?
Is their an uninstaller for WGA? I use this non-MS site for updates instead.

Re:Improved Windows Update experience
http://windowsupdate.62nds.com/ - Firefox windowsupdate!
-
Re:The ones I hate are ones that are based off MS
Install Firefox and use WindizUpdate next time. No need to use IE for anything except browser compatibility checking now.
-
Re:Not possible.
Sure it is!!
http://windowsupdate.62nds.com/
You can use firefox to do updates just like you can with IE and ActiveX.
OR Even better for people updating multiple systems: Auto Patcher

Re:What about windowsupdates
You can actually run windowsupdate through Firefox (unofficially) here http://windowsupdate.62nds.com/
-
I can find service pack 3 just fine..
I can find service pack 3 just fine.. It's at this site called autopatcher. Also there's this tool to make slipstreamed and unintended installs, here. Also, windowsupates works just fine in firefox.
Fine tools from the folks NOT at microsoft.. -
Re:Sounds like a step in the right direction...
try this if your still having problems: http://windowsupdate.62nds.com/ Claims to work with Firefox although I havnt tested it!

Re:Unprotected
Good advice all, but go to WindizUpdate with your Firefox browser (http://windowsupdate.62nds.com/) and update Windows there.

Other Options beside windows update
WindizUpdate: http://windowsupdate.62nds.com/
They've been around for a while now and aren't shady.
You use it just like the regular windows update site.
Supports Mozilla, Opera, AOL & K-Meleon (?)
AutoPatcher XP: http://www.autopatcher.com/
They provide windows updates every month packaged in
one big executable (Full and Lite versions available)
Available through http, ftp, & bittorrent
Alternatively, you can disrespect MS by using a cracked LegitCheckControl.DLL -
Simply avoid the windows update site.
Firefox to the rescue. Get your updates through a secondary site made for updating windows through Firefox. There is the security issue of getting updates through an untrusted source, but how much do you trust the trusted source?
-
Re:Remove IE.....
The only thing I use it for is to go to the M$ site and grab security updates, I can't be bothered to look for a new way to do that and also don't see any reason why it would be worth it.
There's actually a solution for that, too. One relatively painless Firefox extension install, and you no longer have any need to keep IE on your computer. Now, granted, you might say that you don't trust WindizUpdate; on the other hand, though, do you trust Microsoft?
