Re:Oh sure...
My GOP congressmen have been hiding from their constituents rather than answer questions about whether or not they're going to end our healthcare because boo Obama.
If they're harassed and abused by this, cheers to that. If they are the ones abusing us via facebook now, how would I be able to tell? Zero answers on trumpcare on facebook's new thing is still the same number as we had before. -

Re:I liked the cartoon that read:
While I have some doubts as to how wise it was to bring the device to school, I do not find it in any way odd that a kid of that age would be tearing apart electronic stuff and messing with it in the way that he did. He's also not an adult, so holding him to strict interpretations of the word "invent" is a little unfair too. He's a tinkerer, a critical first step in figuring out how stuff works.
The Islamophobia angle is what irritates me. Anyone who brought something like that into a school unannounced would raise a concern, no matter what their ethnicity/religion may be.
This student was up on felony charges for a science fair volcano project:
There was a fair amount of media furor over that too.

Re:Do you want a diversity hire?
That is a great story.
But stories are not data.
What do you say to the families who can prove that they were delayed, to the proof that administrators lied and doctored results?
Your great story does not negate what they did.
And yes, I have plenty of experience. I know case workers that work for the VA, and most of my family uses the VA system.
I even worked for a company that administered Tri-care for a while. (as a sysadmin, so I knew EXACTLY what was going on)
There are systemic issues, that you had a good experience does not off set the wrongs done.
And not the 80's, here is an ADMISSION from the VA that these "unofficial" waiting lists exist:http://www.9news.com/story/new...
That is a very recent report. Not the 80s.

Just one example. tl;dr: Officer shoots someone's dog after it was already restrained as shown on video, gets brought up on charges for it, union summarily declares him innocent of all charges and rallies all available LEOs to "show support" by turning up en masse to pressure the court. But they're totally not part of the problem amirite?
Seems some people are insane about excusing unions no matter what. But I appreciate that you believe I'm unable to fail. :) -
Re:Lousy argumentation
The TSA could counter khasim logic very simply: Since the TSA has been in existence no terrorist action on US targets has been succesful.
The problem is that the above statement is a bare faced lie.
The TSA's method of preventing terrorism is to stop terrorists before they board a plane with a weapon. The terrorist's goal is to get weapons past the TSA checks and onto the plane.
The Richard Reid successfully carried bombs onto a plane in his shoes. Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab successfully carried a bomb onto an airplane in his underwear. The TSA failed to stop them.
The fact that they were stopped by passengers afterwards does not change the fact that the TSA failed to stop terrorists.
And let's not forget the all the times that loaded guns, fake bombs that are supposed to be found and other contraband have been missed by the TSA.
Anyone who is arguing that the TSA is a success is either seriously deluded or lying.

Re:The Lie that Nobody tells
What I have found is that schools will literally send pupils that would not test well home for the day while testing is being done.
In the US we just fake the numbers. Sending students home would burden parents with parenting. No one cares much when fraud is discovered among teachers, but send a bunch of kids home early to the inconvenience of their parents and you will hear about it.

train teachers teaching kids to make games: Works!

Measurable Learning Outcomes: Scalable Game Design
Most people speculate about motivational and educational benefits of certain tools and programming activities. We actually measure them. Scalable Game Design, using AgentSheets, teaches kids how to make games starting with simple 1980 arcade games such as Frogger and them gradually move on all the way to modern SIMs like games including sophisticated AI. With middle and high schools all around the US we have a close to 50% participation of girls. And don't think this is just for K-12. The curriculum + tool includes activities for ugrad and grad level education as well.

Re:Panic
Even if you do live in such a place, if you eat any amount of seaweed, iodized salt, deep sea fish, or meat regularly you have enough iodine to protect your thyroid. Heck, if you have any sort of well-balanced diet and eat whole foods instead of just doritos, twinkies, and Mt Dew, you'd have nothing to worry about.
http://www.weightlossforall.com/foods-rich-iodine.htm
http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=nutrient&dbid=69
http://www.brighthub.com/health/diet-nutrition/articles/45140.aspxBesides, the amount of iodine you would need even if the worst case were to occur is minisule and easily absorbed through a balanced diet. Check out the radiation emergency section of the following article:
http://www.drugs.com/mtm/potassium-iodide.html
Why not spend the trivial amount for potassium iodide? Because unless you really, really need to take it (because you were within range of a criticality event, are working in a damaged reactor, are within fallout from a severe Chernobyle-scale accident which cannot happen with these Japanese reactors, etc) the risk to your liver is much higher than the risk of incidental radiation. Besides, you get exposed to more radiation from the TSA's crappy full body scanners than you would from the fallout from the reactors.

Re:Always surprised me
five and a half years later we're still reeling from that inaction.
Really? We've had, what, like one terrorist attack - the fort hood guy - since then that killed anyone. Ok, I guess the DC sniper counts too.
If anything, we are reeling from too much action - the tens of billions of dollars of wasted productivity every year just because of the pointless hassle at the airports. How many people have died indirectly because of that? What life-saving drugs have been slowed coming to market by 6 months or a year? What charitable contributions to food banks and medical procedures have dried up because the money went to dealing with the inefficiencies created by the TSA?
I'm confident in saying we've killed more people indirectly with our counter-terrorism programs than we have saved. After all, the TSA makes a press release every time they bust a guy with a lot of drugs or water bottle and a taped-up battery pack, but they have never once issued a press release stating that they've stopped an actual terrorist attack on a plane. And when they are actually tested - they miss the bomb 90% of of the time. And just look at the idiots they actually convict of plotting terrorist attacks - like the guys who thought they could blow up JFK by igniting a gas pipeline. The guys they "catch" are so hopeless they were no threat to begin with.

Re:No protesters at the DNC?
Could the fact that we didn't see such an article about last weeks DNC be because there wasn't anybody bothering to protest? HBO's Real Time had footage from the "Free Speech Zone" in Denver which had more kids on bikes than protesters.
The reason you didn't "see such an article about last weeks [sic] DNC" was because the secret jails, midnight raids, and protests there didn't fit in with the MSM narrative of "Obama the Uniter." Of course there were no protestors in the "Free Speech Zone," because such designated protest areas are always set up so far from the main event as to be completely meaningless. All of the real protesters were protesting in the area immediately outside the convention site, and getting rolled up by the police for "protesting without a permit" any time their numbers got above the arbitrary limit, which is another reason why you didn't see (m)any protesters on your TV screen. Both parties do this every time they hold their conventions, and the crackdown accompanying the DNC is usually bigger and uglier, but for some reason it's always the RNC in the news for "oppressing free speech."

Re:Security
I think you've answered your own question.
Security is pretty pathetic. If you *really* want to get destructive devices on a plane, you could probably do it (e.g., this.
There's no need to resort to some crazy cell-phone- or ethernet-based attack. In fact, it'd be detrimental to your mission, since it's more complicated and has more possibilities for failure. If you think that the potential terrorists are deterred because they don't want to die, they could much more simply make timer-based triggers than internet activated ones. -
Re:Major Problem?
This provides some stats, although the methods are a bit dodgy, I think.
Also, this
It isn't clear to me what fraction of kids get solicited by adult predators (rather than fellow teens near their own ages), nor is it clear what fraction actually have any real trouble with it beyond just blocking the person. But do note that 1 in 5 girls and 1 in 10 boys will be "sexually exploited" overall.

Re:So help fight it with your family!!!!Two words: Fire Tornado
Check out the video from Steve Spangler. Scroll down to about the middle of the page for the fire tornado. They didn't give the instructions for this experiment as it probably falls under the "don't try this at home" category, but it doesn't look too hard to figure out.
Just don't sue me if you burn down your house trying the fire tornado thing. Of course, Steve Spangler has some less dangerous things to try on this web site too.

Re:Not an improvement but biz as usual.
i think your judgement against netflix may have been a little hasty. while a disproportionately large number of netflix envelopes getting lost in the mail seems to go against general experience with the usps, the difference is that netflix envelopes are much more conspicuous that your typical package. when a netflix envelope comes through the system, it is very clear what is being mailed and that it is valuable. and because the envelopes are small, i imagine it would not be difficult to steal one discreetly. neither of these points are as true for other packages. anyway, i've seen reports similar to that below, which makes me believe that it is more likely that usps workers are stealing discs rather than netflix somehow lying about receiving discs and attempting to get customers to pay for them (this seems to be what you were implying?). "According to court records, between January and March of 2005, 503 Netflix DVD movies destined for Lyons, Colorado were reported missing or stolen. Netflix told investigators the loss represents 23.33 percent of all DVD movies mailed to that postal area." http://9news.com/acm_news.aspx?OSGNAME=KUSA&IKOBJ

Re:To be fair...
Yes I do.
1998 Florida Mayoral race overturned because of massive voter fraud. This is only the most recent of a half dozen cases in Florida some of which resulted in convictions and/or invalidated elections. Lots of funs stuff... Deceased voters, vote buying, non-resident voters, ballot switching - the whole nine yards. (Gee I wonder if THAT could possibly explain the "intimidating" presence of Republican poll watchers and an attempt to purge the rolls of deceased, illegal and non-resident voters? NO it MUST be "suppression"). As it turns our there WERE still dead people that voted in 2000. The Miami Herald found André Alismé who died in 1997 among 144 other illegal voters after investigating only about a sixth of the precincts in Miami.
Forged absentee ballots in S. Dakota in 2002
Apparently some of the Democratic voting dead vote in primaries too.
Deceased voters still making it to the polls
Of course the 1960 Presidential election... Long past history but memories are long and political
And there is plenty of proof that this year may be a high-water mark for fraud... Fictional people registered to vote
Tons of registrations accumulated over months including many fraudulent ones with fictional names, dozens of the same name, forged signatures, dead people etc. all dumped on the county offices at the last minute to overload the checks to prevent fraud in Pennsylvania, Florida (and here), Colorado, Texas. -
Re:How is this "voter intimidation"?
Democrats were only accused of doing this by the Republicans and only laptops (the easiest and most valuable hardware to steal) were taken, quickly from an office where they were plainly visible from the street.
Engaging in vandalism against Bush offices by teenagers is not quite as bad as tearing up valid registrations.
Criminally negligent op-ed pieces do not facts make.
Accusing a group of committing illegal activities with no evidence is a typical Republican tactic.
Press releases aimed at creating a non-existant scandal and failing are pretty weak as a source.
Finally, defrauding a company by making up fake voter registrations to earn more money in a $9 per hour job is not making people think they are registered when they are not.
-
Re:How is this "voter intimidation"?
Yeah, it's not like the Democrats ever engage in criminal activities aimed at defrauding and intimidating their way into office.
-
Tell me again that Slashdot isn't biased...
...to the left. Voter fraud goes on in every election, by lots of people in both parties. And it's not like there's been a lack of stories about Democratic voter fraud. And pointing this out DOES NOT ENDORSE IT. All voter fraud should be punished. But it's a damn disgrace (and a big help to the Democratic party) to only point it out when it helps Republicans. Since Slashdot won't report it when Dem s do it, here's a recent sampler:
- Attempted Democratic Voter Fraud In Nashville
- Voter Fraud In South Dakota
- Colorado To Tackle Voter Fraud Fears
- Rendell will send monitors to elections offices
- ACORN Voter Registration Fraud Allegations Are Just the Tip of the Iceberg, Says Employment Policies Institute
And lets not forget the revelation that the Democratic Party plans a pre-emptive strike by alleging voter fraud in close races, even if there's absolutely no proof of it.
Slashdot; not fair, and damn sure not balanced. -
Re:See a pattern?
Can anyone reply to my post with a corresponding list of things Dems have done?
Sure:
-Republican forms get tossed in the trash but not Republican forms...
- Democratic registration for completely fictional people...
- Fraudulent, forged Democratic registrations as well dumping a full years worth of paperwork on the registrars lap in the last minute to ensure they weren't looked at and INTENTIONALLY putting down false information for Republicans or simply not turning them in.
- Texas Democrats who Gerrymandered in their redistricting efforts... (The recent successful Republican effort was tit for tat revenge for the 1990 redistricting that The Almanac for American Politics called "The most partisan redistricting in the '90 cycle in the nation." and "the shrewdest gerrymander" of it's time. A gerrymander that resulted in a house delegation that was 17 to 15 Democratic despite 56% of the voters at the polls voting for a Republican congressman.
- CBS (as partisan as Sinclair or Fox) doing it's traditional 60 Minutes week-before-the-election hit piece early this year using obvious forgeries and giving the Kerry campaign advanced notice so they could exploit it with their operation "Fortunate Son"
-Florida 1998 -- Massive voter fraud uncovered that eventually leads to the election being overturned. The efforts during the next cycle (2000) all efforts to prevent fraud demagogued as "disenfranchising black voters" by the EXACT same people who had perpetuated the fraud. -
Re:See a pattern?Let's see... the Democrats have repeatedly invaded GOP campaign offices, breaking the arm of a campaign worker (October 7), terrorized a worker in Canton, Ohio by burglarizing an occupied building forcing the worker to barricade herself in an office for safety (October 10), burned swastikas into the lawn of a Bush supporter in Wisconsin (September 30), and fired a weapon into Bush campaign offices in Huntington, West Virginia (while campaign staff were watching Bush's acceptance speech), Knoxville, Tennessee (October 4).
In Milwaukee, Kerry supporters forcibly occupied a GOP campaign HQ and disrupted all operations using a bullhorn.
In Cleveland the NAACP's National Voter Fund and "ACT Ohio" are under investigation for voter registration fraud prompting the local prosecutor to state "We've seen voter fraud before, but never on this level. I grew up in Chicago and this looks like the politics of Mayor Daley in the '50s and '60s."
Pro-democrat voter registration fraud in Racine, WI
Denver and Minnesota are also locations of suspected fraud.

This happened pretty recently in Colorado, too. Some genius in a hot-air balloon decided it would be fun to try to set an altitude record without bothering to tell the FAA he would be drifting through Denver International Airport restricted airspace.

But don't let this affect your consumerist activities, citizen. The government is already throwing up some "don't panic" propaganda.
"Asteroids regularly explode over the Earth with the intensity of a nuclear bomb; the explosions could be mistaken for a nuclear attack and even trigger an atomic war, an Air Force general said Thursday. - At least 30 times a year, a space rock measuring a few yards across slashes into the atmosphere and explodes, releasing energy equal to that of an atomic bomb, Air Force Brig. Gen. Simon Worden told subcommittee members."
Oh really? 30 times a year? This is the first I've ever heard about it.
