Pandemic?
Is it bad that I read this article while I was playing Pandemic 2? I wanted to take a shot at infecting Madagascar again, and now I realize that it's 4 hours later.

Reproduce this. Easily. Stuff like this is the competition. The site will post many new games a week. This is largely due to something akin to the networking effect with the number of developers on hand.
I saw ben joffe's 2-d shooter. Pretty slick. So is doom in flash:

The frame rate is a bit better in flash on my crappy laptop.
HTML 5 is getting there, but it is not there yet.

The best multitasking test I've found..
..happens to be this little online game called Arcadia. You play four little mini-games all at once and it's really interesting to watch people play it. Some are stressed out from the very start, just by the THOUGHT of monitoring four separate events. To others it comes almost naturally. Also, it's interesting to see how long it takes before people begin to see which of the mini-games are important and which ones pretty much play themselves. Re:Appeal to His Original Priorities
The problem is, I've seen "addicting" used as a positive marketing term. For example, see here

Re:News flash!
Hah! Not likely.
I've done MANY simulations, and Madagascar ALWAYS survives. -

TRS-80 in 4th grade
My first computer games were in my elementary school library on TRS-80's: Oregon Trail and Worm. A year later I had my own TI-99/4A and was programming simple games myself.
I have always preferred games with lots of depth of interaction between the player and the computer, like Civilization. These days I make maps for Starcraft including adaptations of RISK, Civilization, Phantom, and Turret Defense. A game that's moddable is much more fun to me than one that's the same every time it's started up.
My first non-computer games were probably Match, War, Tag, Hide-and-Seek, Candyland, and a wide variety of other board games to follow.

Quite a few flash games linked herein
You want flash games? YOU GOT 'EM!
I have probably a gig of flash games I've downloaded to my computer. A lot of it is crap, actually. But there are several that are quite addictive and I thought I would share.
Most of these you can grab and save locally. Since I had most of these saved, I just Googled for the game names and linked the first or second or third result that came up. Most I checked to make sure the site would load without popups and teh game was still there and would load. I included the name in case the result doesn't work as it should (such as a site getting slashdotted! - I could have used coral cache [.nyud.net] on these, but I was unsure if it'd work with the flash files as well. So, if one doesn't work, you can always Google the name. :p
Also, if you saved the flash files locally, you can also download a standalone flash player, courtesy of Adobe, so that you can play the games on your home PC as well. Standalone debug versions are apparently available for Mac, Linux and Windows.
Below is a list of some games I thought I'd share with y'all. Some have probably been mentioned (n, dice wars), but those that were in the main article (portal flash version) I've skipped.

Java
We have this. It is called Java. And the performance just screams.
http://www.java.com/en/games/
It is Java http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Java_(programming_language) , so by design it will work on any modern console. My Wii w/Opera and Java, my Mac, my Vista box, or my Suse box.
Personally, I like the Flash ones better;

Portal: Flash Version
Almost as fun as the original and it runs in your web browser. 2D games definitely still have something to offer.

It goes something like this:

maybe there is nothing left for the imagination
Ever since wing commander III, the game industry has been turning games into drama. I really enjoyed wing commander but the cut scenes (with no way to skip them) really pissed me off. Same thing with Yuris revenge all the way to Ghost Recon III. If I wanted drama, I'd be watching TV. I just want to go in, blow up some shit, and have some mindless fun (like Kitten Cannon[*]). The other thing is the game companies put way too much emphasis on the graphics. Most people have to turn it all off to make it playable on their crappy hardware anyway - not to mention everyone has to buy a new video card just to play new directx 10 games. Yeah right, I'll do that... just so I can turn it all off anyway. Maybe EA should start fresh with something like Oregon Trail that required some amount of imagination (on the apple II) to really enjoy the game - hey that'd be different.

Re:Over reaction? We now live in a day and age where a woman can spill coffee on herself and successfully sue for millions of dollars. Bad example. The woman only sued for medical expenses. However, McDonalds was previously warned by the courts that the coffee was dangerously hot and the judge and/or jury decided to award punitive damages. Think of the huge class-action lawsuit that would most likely follow. It would be the same as the class action lawsuit that appeared in response to the Colombine. It was dismissed rather quickly.
In addition, the "GTA" defence didn't hold water with judges. In one case, it was a technicality (e.g. the defendant denied it), in another case, it was countered with evidence that the defendant was a nutcase (but legally sane.) With people like Dr. Phil and Jack Thompson blaming video games, and getting as much media time as they do, how likely in the future will it be for video game makers to get a fair civil trial? s/fair civil trial/fair public treatement/
Most judges are smart enough to see through smoke and mirrors (and those that aren't will be corrected through appeals court). The real issue is with the media sensations being as kneejerk as Airport Security. -
Re:"Spanking the Monkey"
I prefer to spank this monkey.

Re:I concur
In high school I took a Calculus III course that was entirely self-taught using Mathematica software. We met during the regular school day but the teacher was basically a proctor. He was a good teacher and knew his stuff but because of the nature of the course, never lectured. We had class in the computer lab and as most of you can imagine, there was very little learning going on. The lessons only took a few days to complete and we were often given a full week or more. This left plenty of time to find loopholes in the internet filtering used by the school and make our way onto some flash games websites and the like. Most of the class was spent honing my "skills" at Kitten Cannon on AddictingGames.com. When it came time for the written tests, we weren't worried because we knew that the questions would, for the most part, come straight from the computer lessons with some of the numbers changed. Now, in college, I have a laptop but have yet to remove it from my room because I know that if I bring it to class I won't pay attention and won't learn anything. Computers can be useful tools outside the classroom but need to be seen as such and only used in that context.
As for PowerPoint, I have heard from many teachers as well as business professionals that PowerPoint was the worst thing to happen to computers since the conception of Ctrl-Alt-Del. I think many people would agree that a truly innovative PowerPoint can help illustrate a concept but for the most part a PowerPoint presentation is nothing more than a distractor, especially in the way middle school students are taught to use it.
Sorry for the rant but snooty parents piss me off, I come from Naperville, IL where there is an overabundance of this kind of parent who don't realize the value of human interaction. -

Re:The Legend of Zelda was awesome ...
I have not experienced those ancient times, but still I can't seem to understand the sentimentalism around those old games - although I have played Zelda on my Gameboy.
But if you want to have that Arcade feeling back, just go to http://www.addictinggames.com/arcadegames.html for example and spent some hours playing :)
There probably are like a ZILLION Astrosmash clones out there.. You could even program one with a decent game "click & develop" - enginge in 30min! -
Re:Drivers Ed
Drivers Ed is an online driving education game. You can play it here. I believe it requires Shockwave to play...

Re:Epcot
Isn't this basically the same idea as Epcot?
I don't know about you, but Epcot in California is the lamest, most retarded excuse for a place to give yourself nausea since the whole building is spinning without any way to visually orient yourself to what's really going on.
So, what do you get for your price of sickening nausea?
An entire sea of cheap PCs set up with dumb flash games for the kids that they can also get (coincidentally) by going to any of a number of sites on the Intarweb.
I sincerely hope there's something better in Florida, 'cause the one in California is a no-go. -
I've got the training!
Where do I sign up. I've spent months working on an intense helicopter simulator, fine-tuning my skills to perfection.

To hell with Minesweeper. Try this.

All hail addicting games...
It's good to know PopCap Games is making money through their shareware model, but it's not going to get me to buy any games I can find at AddictingGames.com. I can hardly bring myself to fork over cash for games like UT 2003, and I've been playing the demo of that for quite a while now.
