Re:4. Studios are Conservative
It's important to note that the SBC was basically taken over a number of years back (see section V: "Issues and Controversies"). It used to be more moderate, but some folks in high places (who incidentally have lots of money) tipped the right scales to make it a hard-line fundamentalist group.
The same tactics are now being used against Methodists and the United Church of Christ. Once I listened to the episode linked there, a lot of things became clear to me with regard to American politics and the Church. -
Re:difference with china
i'd like to note that in no way i said that
:)
what i meant was that using small steps one can soon transfer into another. and exactly small steps are dangerous, because most people don't object to each small change, but they would object loudly if all these changes were introduced in a single bundle.
imagine all the restrictions and gov power raisings that have taken place over last, let's say, 15 years. now imagine them happening all at once.
i'm not trying to say that nothing like that haven't happened before - but that was done in secrecy and bringing that out to daylight could be dangerous to those who performed different acts. now, we have a german man that is trying to sue for being held for 4 months and tortured in a secret american prison in europe. (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/12/06/terror/ main1099246.shtml and other sources).
now, that could hardly get worse in public, could it ? of course it could...
Judge T.S. Ellis declined to even consider the merits of his case, agreeing with the governments claim that letting the case proceed would compromise national security, saying, private interests must give way to the national interest in preserving state secrets.

wtf ? at which point has the world become so soft that even when things like that come to our knowledge it is considered normal ?
both jefferson & franklin are overcited, but weren't they right ? -
Re:You know what is really funny?
does that make the majority of americans who elected him.
Actually, only a small percentage of Americans voted for him. The problem is, most people did not, or were 'unable' to vote...
(Suppressing votes is a key to fundamental leaders winning; take a look at Iran for example, less than 15% of the population voted for their current leader as well.)
Watch that generalization brush when you blindly use it to paint on such a big canvas. Most people in the US think Bush is an illiterate fool with psychopathic tendencies. (Do a search on voter fraud and all the indictments in just the last year from 2004 election alone, especially all the indictments from a key state, Ohio.)
Check out http://www.airamericaradio.com/ for a view from the majority of Americans... -

Air America
Google reports that they are "Progressive talk radio network" -

Neither. Lots of small AM radio stations are Progressive/Liberal news/talk, like Air America. Can't imagine why Big Media would want them silenced.

Independent podcasting is the future
Many people HATE commercial advertising on terrestrial radio, despite it being free to listen to. With greater access to broadband now, podcasting will grow significantly, IMHO.
Some radio stations have found though (as Air America Radio did, for example) that they can't afford the cost of distributing giga/terabytes of files without charging for it. Listeners baulk at the prospect of having to pay for something that was previously free. That's why I think that the future lies with independent podcasters (not affiliated with major media corporations) who don't charge for their content; and produce shows whose quality is every bit as good as main stream media. For an example of such a show, head over to The Richard Vobes Radio Show. He does a 30-minute variety show EVERY day.

Zines would be considered Journalism
We have let a madeup word blur what a journalist is.
Has I have owned the domain http://www.zines.com/ for well over 8 years, See BTW below. I would guess it qualifies me as well, but my role has been more as an editor then journalist. Of bloggers, I would say they could be journalists. But Blogs are closer to being like Punditry. Un-original, un-researched, regugitations.
However, I can't see the test being anything that could exclude them from calling themselves journalists. If the laws say X number of stories in Y timeframe that isn't workable.
The test shouldn't be, did the person write stories that where "printed" on-topic to what they are trying to get protection. If somebody wrote a few fiction stories or opinions then went out an slammed a politico for some misdeed without showing clear proof. If they claimed Journalistic Privledge, then that a fair indication they are not covered. That falls into slander, if they can provide some documentation, like signed checks or pictures that's proof. Protect the source is one thing, have no proof is another.
A pundit should not be covered, they don't report anything. Unless your Bob Novack and your reporting on the identity of a undercover CIA agent. Or using the cover of a reporter to "report" for a fictious "News Organization" in the whitehouse press corps. I am slamming Novack because he's not reporting anymore. He's a full blown pundit. A pundit is a puppet.
Republican bashing aside, Air America barely squeaks by as a Actual News 0rganization. They do research, they report and opinionate much to the same degree like, I grudging admit Fox News is also an Actual News 0rganization.
Where as Talon "News" fails completely. From Wikipedia;
--
The Standing Committee of Correspondents, rejected Gannon's application for a Capitol Hill press pass because of Talon News'lack of independence from a political organization. Committee chairman Jim Drinkard wrote in his letter:
The application for accreditation to the press galleries states that "members of the press shall not engage in lobbying or paid advertising, publicity, promotion, work for any individual, political party, corporation, organization, or agency of the Federal Government." Talon News has not demonstrated to the satisfaction of the committee that there is a separation from GOPUSA/Millions of Americans.com.
--
Gannon was a blogger, but not a journalist. Other more topical orgnizations like http://www.circusnews.com/ are journalistic in nature and I would think that one of their self imposed limits would be where their reporter strayed off the topic (in this case Circuses) and into say Astronomy. Nothing really incendiary there (heh heh), however it's outside their organizations obvious field. This does NOT make it NOT NEWS, If that was to be an opinion piece in Astronomy, is the reporter from Circus News still covered as a Journalist? I would think in that case, no. If they were to report on any subject that could be construded as a legitimate news story then it's still a legit story by an 'employed' reporter. Just outside Circus News' normal market.
Likewise if a so called 'Blogger' wrote a real news story then they are acting as a journalist. A blogger should be seen in much the same light as the difference between a Taxi Driver and Your Mom. Both can drive you somewhere, like a hospital or a friend's house, but the diffence boiled down is one get's paid to do it as a profession (unless your Mom is a cabbie). But both can drive.
The test for a Journalist should be in the simplest term;
If you are acting as a Journalist at the time, then your a Journalist. If your using the claim to cover most crimes then your not one. It would get gre -
Re:I think the problem is Gates and Ballmer
A dork with air amerikka as his url is going to bloviate about my knowlege of 'Enterprise?'
Why yes, I am, because you don't know what the fuck you are talking about. Oh wait! You're not implying that because you listen to Rush Limbaugh that you are more of an expert in the web enterprise server area, are you? Because that would be just fucking idiotic.
That you can point to five or six Big Successes that don't use Microsoft servers totally MISSES the point that corporate America, internally, does.
Huh! I seem to recall....
80% of what market? The 'waste time' sites we all browse from home, and that people slough off at work reading?
Yeah! That sounds familiar! "Waste time" sites, you said! It turned out you were full of shit, utterly, and completely. But rather than be a man and admit wrong, you change the subject.
And hey crackah, you got any statistics to back up your bullshit? Cuz right now you pullin shit out of yo ass so regularly it's like you be made up of Metamucil or some shit.

Re:War in Iraq
What a ringing endorsement for your link, Air America Radio.
Oh shit, I'm a bad advertiser. I weep, I moan, I bitch incessantly, I don't care what I say or do as long as I can maintain my image. Gee, I guess not, because that'd make me a conservative.
Can't express yourself without calling someone else a "stupid fuck"? How typical.
Typical? Yes, I'm typical. Typically pissed off at the apologetics and lies. Typically infuriated that people are too goddamn stupid to realize that they're being fucking lied to. Or, worse, they KNOW they're being lied to, but perpetuate the lies because hey, it's just how the world works, you know? It's all about image for conservatives. "Look at how bad you make your image look! How typical!" Yeah? FUCK image. Fuck George Bush, fuck the Republicans, and fuck YOU if you pretend they're anything other than shit sucking theocrats that they are.

Re:Indian, Pakistani, Ukrainian, Nigerian
Post your link to the source of this "news". I can't find it on Google. Link not to a rightist blogger or Freerepublic, but a to a transcript of the comment, WITH CONTEXT, or at least an article from a credible news source referring to this. No, Rush is not acceptable. And he does not provide transcripts, anyway.
And as for Dobbs, he has indeed jumped onto the rightist train and is riding for the sunset, so his attitude as a "journalist" is indeed up for comment. He's dropped the mask of a reporter and has become a right-wing agitator. So it goes.
At Daily Kos or Talking Points Memo or even Buzzflash, the answer to the Drudge, they exhaustively document and link each reference to an actual news article from a credible source. "Everybody knows" is not credible as a source.
This "Franken is calling names" stinks of the old Orwellian trick of smearing the enemy with that which your side is most certainly guilty. If you know you can be called on your actions, make a lot of noise establishing "controversey" about those who will call you out, to diminish their stature. Slash, smear, distort, MAKE NOISE, and the enemy's best efforts to expose your actions can be at best summed up as calling the kettle black by those whose knowledge of the discussion is not exactly exhaustive.
Air America Radio,, with Franken as midday host, has done more to clean the rightist clocks in one year than the entire Democratic party has done in twenty. -
Air America Radio
Air America Radio offers progressive talk radio in regressive streaming/file formats so you would need conversion utilities such as realcap ; specify the show start time via a cron job and the duration as a command line parameter. Use their contact form to ask them to support sensible streaming formats such as shoutcast/icecast/peercast instead of forcing regressive users to use regressive formats and thus support the regressive companies behind them.

Re:Of course they don't know, we don't allow them
A similiar example would be "Air America" where the government controls the funds and employees. This is not covered by the "freedom of press".
The goverment controls Air America? That would be news to these guys and these guys as well. -
Re:Orwell vs Huxley
Oh come on.
In some markets, there's, Air America! -
Re:SIRIUS IS WAAAY BETTER
Sirius seems to have better sound quality, IMO. Even my mom (an XM subscriber) commented on how my satellite radio got better "reception" than hers.
Sirius beats XM for political talk: they have an uncut Air America stream, and their own Sirius Left (with my pals The Young Turks), as well as two conservative talk streams. XM has one conservative and one liberal stream, and their "America Left" is just Air America with some shows replaced by non-AAR shows.
They have some big names behind their shows, including Eminem and Tony Hawk. DJ Liquid Todd has a weekly show on Alt Nation and helped put together the electronic streams Boombox and Chill. I'm sure XM has some of these too. -
Re:Easy
Hmm- methinks you probably shouldn't link to Drudge as a source of what Democrats think- or a FreeRepublic writer either. May I suggest getting your information of what Democrats think from a source that is actually Democratic? http://www.airamericaradio.com/ had all of their talk radio hosts embracing absentee voting as THE solution to Diebold machines. Of course, in many states, absentee voters are basically disenfranchised- the votes aren't counted unless the election is close enough to make a difference.

Re:You might have a point
Do you know about Air America?
-
a few ideas
air america radio will have special coverage and with their 30-something stations and the live stream, you should be able to get some good out of them.
also, http://www.electoral-vote.com/ is going to have ongoing coverage all night also.
of course all the usual suspects like cnn and the other general papers and new sources should have pretty up to date info as well. -
Ask Chuck D yourself...
The nice thing is you can give Chuck D a call and ask him about it yourself. He hosts Unfiltered, a talk show on Air America Radio. I believe it airs every weekday and can be heard either on the radio in 30+ markets or via RealAudio or MS streaming.
Chuck D's been pretty vocal on the side of pro-music sharing, so I'd be interested in anyone who might ask him why he doesn't want to be sampled... -

No problems with admitting bias there... -
Re:So..?Who needs RealPlayer?
People Like Me [tm] who have convinced our significant others that broadband is more important than cable or satellite television!
I'm quite happy with Real Player.
I do however need something to watch or listen to from time to time. I've always listened to Air America Radio with it. I just moved into a new place and can't really afford cable television right now. However for less than 20 bucks a month I do get a whole bunch of media and get it on demand. (SuperPass, however I'm on the trial now)
I watched the Convention with it, listen to Jazz with it - all with "Tivo" like control. Right now I'm listening to Al Franken and listening to it from 30 minutes ago. A feature many streaming audio clients don't support.
If I can use the Helix DRM module I'll use it. Sure, DRM is scarry for a lot of people. But when it allows me to download 100 movies from Starz! a month for just $14... that is cool. (Live streams of Starz! also) Also I hate being forced into Windows. Just don't force me to run the DRM features as root, we're cool.
VoIP from the cable company? Nah... TVoIP from the phone company.
With 3Mb/s from the phone company for $45 a month you can get all of your "living room" needs from your computer.

Re:... but I'll defend to the death his right...
Actually, 'that liberal radio network' also know as Air America Radio is still around and doing quite well. Al Franken's show has even managed to beat out Limbaugh in some markets (NYC).
-
Re:journalistic credibility?
So, you think it's awesome that they don't actually say what they believe, and instead just use a strawman argument to discredit the other side?
Sort-of, yeah. See, when I turn to a liberal radio station - like the ones that would be playing Air America, I already know what they believe. And most of the shows do say what they believe (Randi Rhodes for one...)
Of course - it is nothing new, right? It's almost kind-of pointless for either side to listen, because not only do you know what they are going to say - but odds are that if you are listening anyway - you probably already agree...
You know, preaching to the choir and all that...
But the Al Franken show is unique, because - well, as a radio guy - he sucks... Which means he is not following all the same crappy paradigms that the other shows do - and it is a nice break from the norm.
Other than that, any shows on the right or the left are largely propaganda - and should be taken as the sum of a whole, not as gospel truth...
But as Dennis Miller says - I could be wrong. -
Air America
I'm a big fan of Air America Radio - very intelligent and thought-provoking talk that's quite entertaining.
-
Air America Radio
If you're in to talk radio, and inclined to listen to a liberal slant, try Air America Radio. It's not tech oriented (unless you count electronic voting controversy), but it's a refreshing change from the right-wing dominated talk-radio airways.

Re:We need to stop selling our airwaves to BIG BIZ
i think you just hit it on the nail right there with "like wireless internet". why even go through traditional airwaves, when we can (still, i hope) control some of the digital airwaves?
:)start your own -internet radio- station. with the proliferation of wireless internet hotspots in municipalities and around major cities, this could be more effective than a traditional "radio" station.
democracy on internet radio... how about Air America Radio?
-
Re:What about Al?
I hear it all the time on the liberal media. It's the mainstream folks that have missed it.
-
Re:Definitely Patriots
Currently, the FCC is the legislative branch of the media conglomerates.
The FCC exists primarily to cater to ClearChannel / Kiss FM. It's not about serving the public, it's about serving big business.
Pirate Radio is an act of civil disobedience.
There is an old saying - Want a free press? Buy one. Of course, for those of us that can't buy one - you can start your own!
Just imagine 1,000 Slashdotters rebroadcasting Airamerica Radio across the midwest. We might finally have a voice to reckon with Rush Limbaugh and Fox News. -
Purdue's wi-fi
Yeah, I have to say, Purdue's WiFi, affectionately known as AirLink, is pretty cool beans. It was my motivation for purchasing a cheap laptop and putting off upgrading the desktop another year or so.
As long as I shut the damn thing off when I'm in class, it isn't too distracting. It's so fantastic to be able to get a burrito or whatever in the Union, sit, catch up on email, do research (with the purdue.edu IPs it's easy to get into the library's online journals and stuff), listen to Air America Radio's stream, and so on.
If it hasn't made me more productive, I feel more productive, at least. And perception of functionality always trumps actual functionality! -
AirAmerica
I agree I hate Real with a passion. Make MS look good. Anyone by the way know how to get AirAmericato play with Mplayer. It worked the first few days but now they have changed it and I flat out refuse to install Real's Spy / Spam ware
