Wikipedia; How to find articles on IPv9
I originally read this at IP list -- I did some googling and when ?I saw that there was no entry at Wikipedia I started one -- IPv9. There are other articles google-able out there, but many are the April Fool's RFC -- to remove those you should use IPv9 -historical - of course most of those are in Chinese (gah!!), and few of them play well with Babelfish.
Where's my real time translation so I can read some of those articles? -

Official Sergio Amadeu Answer
Hi,
I had translated the official answer of Sergio Amadeu to the press regarding this issue. While there is no proccess, Amadeu received an offical judicial notification asking for an apologize in 48 hours. The original note is on the site of the CIPSGA, a local NGO commited to free software. There are other related news on CIPSGA site as well, including a microsoft answer (I will not loose my time translating that - use the fish).Notice to the Press- Sérgio Amadeu
In attention to the national and international press demand, which supports the brazillian government in this moment without precedent in History, in which the director of an important puclic institution in this country sufferes personally the action of those interested in keeping an hegemonic model, write, after hearing my lawyers, state that the justice act enacted against me is, in itself, so unexpected and outrageous, that it doesn't deserve an answer. On the other hand, I'd like to state that the contraction of software preserving the values of freedom and opennes fis, for the Brazilan Governent, a question linked to the very core of the democratic principles. And why a long and painfull path has passed for we to get at the current status of democraticy on this Country, we shall stand firm in our fight.
If democracy is a value filled with ideologies, it is never an insgnificant factor. If democracy is a dream, it is a dream from which this Country will nerver wake again.

Hey, web stuff is easy with Ruby as well. But I don't have such examples for you. You have to get a taste of Ruby to find about its web capabilities. I Know IOWA has an example:

Re:The merits of pHDs
Is it right for a discredited man to have his pHD removed? Is it right that popular opinion can determine how qualified someone is to make a statement in their field?
The university he got his degree from was the University of Konstanz in Germany. Here's a German article (babelfished) on the whole thing. The educational laws of the German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg state that a PhD title can be removed if "through his behavior at a later point in in his career, the owner has proven unworthy of the title."
From Bell Labs' summary, we can find more about what he was charged with:
- Substitution of data (substitution of whole figures, single curves and partial curves in different or the same paper to represent different materials, devices or conditions)
- Unrealistic precision of data (precision beyond that expected in a real experiment or requiring unreasonable statistical probability)
- Results that contradict known physics (behavior inconsistent with stated device parameters and prevailing physical understanding, so as to suggest possible misrepresentation of data)
[...]
The Committee's main findings and conclusions can be summarized as follows.
By all accounts, Hendrik Schön is a hard working and productive scientist. If valid, the work he and his coauthors report would represent a remarkable number of major breakthroughs in condensed-matter physics and solid-state devices.
Except for the provision of starting materials by others, all device fabrication, physical measurement and data processing in the work in question were carried out (with minor exceptions) by Hendrik Schön alone, with no participation by any coauthor or other colleague. None of the most significant physical results was witnessed by any coauthor or other colleague.
Proper laboratory records were not systematically maintained by Hendrik Schön in the course of the work in question. In addition, virtually all primary (raw) electronic data files were deleted by Hendrik Schön, reportedly because the old computer available to him lacked sufficient memory. No working devices with which one might confirm claimed results are presently available, having been damaged in measurement, damaged in transit or simply discarded. Finally, key processing equipment no longer produces the unparalleled results that enabled many of the key experiments. Hence, it is not possible to confirm or refute directly the validity of the claims in the work in question.
The most serious allegations regarding the work in question relate to possible manipulation and misrepresentation of data. These allegations speak directly to the question of scientific misconduct. The Committee carefully investigated each of these allegations and came to a specific conclusion in each case.
The evidence that manipulation and misrepresentation of data occurred is compelling. In its mildest form, whole data sets were substituted to represent different materials or devices. Hendrik Schön acknowledges that the data are incorrect in many of these instances. He states that these substitutions could have occurred by honest mistake. The recurrent nature of such mistakes suggests a deeper problem. At a minimum, Hendrik Schön showed reckless disregard for the sanctity of data in the value system of science. His failure to retain primary data files compounds the problem.
More troublesome are the substitutions of single curves or even parts of single curves, in multiple figures representing different materials or devices, and the use of mathematical functions to represen

Why doesn't google
simply make a distinction between "I am looking to buy something" searches vs "I am looking for information about something".
They are cleary different kinds of searches, and I do both of them, yet I get the same results for both kinds of searches. With the exception for froogle, which is definitely a step in the right direction, but not quite there.
Although the interface has gotten a little better on altavista (remember them??), but searches like: for used condoms do not make sense for retail stores at all. I'm sorry guys, there isn't a market for used condoms, but if there were I'm sure someone would be more than willing to supply the demand.
The google search for used condoms is a little better, but the advertising links on the right hand side does have:

And please do not take a tangent on "used condoms", its just a sick memorable example. -

Machine translators?
A lot of these spoems could just be bad translations by machine translators, which just happen to sound like poetry.
Try it on the babel fish by going back and forth between languages. -
some thoughts:
writing as an ESL teacher in japan, here's a general breakdown of how (INMHO, natürlich), to learn a language if you aren't going to pay a lot of money/take course/whatever....
the grammar/vocab/sylabaries/kanji can all be brute forced, that's not a problem (other than the obvious common learning problems, but we'll ignore these and assume you have the motivation and intelligence to brute force these)
the hard parts are pronounciation, listening comprehension, and cognitive/production skills. without a native speaker to practice with, its next to impossible. so, here are my techniques (with which i've been having some success with french and german recently (i decided not to bother learning japanese, i need only a very tiny little bit, even living in a fairly rural part of japan) )
also, note that my suggestions are based on the techniques we use at the english factory where i work
1. pronounciation-- use internet based streaming video or audio of news casts. news is good because even if you only understand 2% of the story, you can read about it your own language and that helps with knowing whats going on. do short 1-2 phrase listen and repeats with the clip, trying to get your speach to match that of the speaker, and if you can find bits that use the grammar or vocab you're brute forcing, all the better
2. listening comp-- same as above. pick a few vocab words or target structures, and just listen for those. as your vocab grows, it will help tremendously to get used to just identifying those words used in natural speach in a variety of contexts
3. cognitive/production skills-- after every lesson, the most important thing is to REACT to what you've just seen/heard/read about by saying whatever you possibly can, out loud, in whatever rudiments of the language you have. getting used to have to think in the language, and produce your own language will aid fluency and long-term learning
best of luck!
on another note, another poster menioned babelfish... its okay for one or two words at a go, but not for anything longer (and its japanese is really quite attrocious).... i use it to communicate with a friend in paris, but i always have to strugle through a lenghty reality check of what it gave me, and ive gotten in the habit of only giving it content one clause at a time (and thankfully french grammar is so close to english that i can get away with this, it won't work in japanese) -

Some facts, please...
I have experienced that debates on nuclear tend to go over to irrationality quite fast. According to Godwin's law Lovelock has already lost the argument, but whatever.
First, oil use produces waste that causes moderate, gradual modification of the environment. Nuclear can cause much worse effects. Ok, I know, this side of the world we have super-duper-safer reactors; but the main consumer of energy will sometime soon be China. I personally don't trust anyone with nuclear power anyway.
However bad an accident is in a refinery, there's no way a city can be obliterated by it, or a continent poisoned. The damage is intrinsecally limited. A nuclear reactor (maybe supercritical?) can do much worse, and these things do happen at some point--No matter how good security can be, there is no such thing as 100% safety.Right now only a fraction of world energy is being produced by nuclear, and thus you hear people boasting about "hundreds of years" before depletion of the sources. Of course what many forget is that, if all energy were to be produced by nuclear, this time would shorten to a few decades. This also means that less economical fissile fuel sources would have to be used, driving up the already high prices of nuclear power.
Many nuclear plants means more people working on nuclear tech. Many planes in the air means also more people training to become pilots, and some might get by unobserved studying only how to fly, and not how to land. See where it's going?
Please go to a university library and look up this article: Paine, Jeffrey R., "Will nuclear power pay for itself?", The social science journal, vol. 33, n. 4, pages 459-473, 1996, JAI press. Paine analysed the real (as opposed to speculated) data about nuclear power production, to conclude that nuclear power may at best be economically marginal, paying back for itself only after large times and only in the most optimistic conditions. RTFA before saying it's crap; it's also available on ScienceDirect if you have access to it. I have heard often, in the academic environment, that nuclear in some cases is not even producing enough energy to pay for its cycle: what you get out at the power plant can be less than what you put in extraction, purification, enrichment, transport and security.
And, after this happened (Fish for non-Italian speakers, but there are surely plenty of English articles, I'm only being lazy), the very last thing we need is more fissile material going around.
IMHO, until someone cracks fusion, nuclear is a very interesting technology that had however better not be applied. It's immature, expensive, easily misused. Maybe the positive attitude towards nuclear power by many Americans is due never being hit by something like the Chernobyl cloud. Yet, I read somewhere that new reactors have not been built in the US since 79.
Short term: natural gas.
Mid term: solar, wind, tide, hydro, other renewables.
Long term: fusion.
That's how I see it at least. All these sources can be converted to hydrogen. -

NEC says it does not work and needs laser fixI wonder why we need to get this from a German newsmag, but heise, a by far more serious newsticker, is quoting NEC officials :
Wrong double layer firmware for NEC burner
Basically NEC insists that the laser needs calibration for such kind of update.
Another point is that the media can identify itself as "DVD ROM" or "DVD+R DL". The newer "DVD+R DL" seems to cause trouble with DVD Video Players.

Thus nevertheless? Firmware makes NEC DVD burners dual Layer able
Unofficial firmware is to make 2100A and 2500A the 2510A
With a firmware of the not yet available dual Layer DVD burner NEC 2510A emerged in the net now also its are to be able to describe only single Layer able predecessors NEC 2100A and 2500A DVD+R DL media with up to 8,5 GByte data. There it the 2500A-Modelle already for under 100, - euro gives, would be this a very inexpensive, but not revaluation of the DVD burners mentioned which can be enjoyed without caution.
The beta firmware unauthorized of NEC does not only provide for a warranty loss, it required also that that is operated in each case to flashende drive assembly as master. In the forum of RPC1.org, where the first discussion started around the firmware, some daring firmware Flasher reported that the drive assembly LED constantly flashed and the drive assembly drawer came up for the start - in these cases the DVD burners were operated as Slave.
Since DVD+R DL media with 8,5 GByte are at least available storage location at present not yet in the trade and will be more expensive at the beginning of also clearly than the conventional single Layer media (4.3 GByte), trying of the modified firmware out is meaningful at this time for the few users. Besides it is not clear whether each drive assembly brings the necessary laser quality for successful DVD+R DL recording procedures with itself, because the requirements for the optics are somewhat higher.
On CDRInfo.com already a first DL function test was published - the DL medium was described and the used software stopped with 99 per cent write progress - which medium has nevertheless functioned. First signal quality tests would have resulted in partly good, partly strange values, so that one may be strained whether 2100A and 2500A in each case will work as duly functioning DL DVD burners - and the described DVD+R DL media to DVD Playern are as compatible. Conventional DVD media were correctly described with the 2510A-Firmware, how is to be reread in the rpc1.org-Forum.
That, which it itches now in the fingers to try the DL firmware out it should realize itself the risks, which read guidance of the respective offziellen or unofficial firmware designs exactly and which to flashende drive assembly as alone as possible (e.g. with taken off Slave) as masters operate. There - as already written - so far no DVD+R DL media to buy are, should daring ones perhaps better after others, every now and then not less interesting changed firmware designs on rpc1.org or herrie.org umschauen itself. Otherwise the DL firmware changed by the "The Dangerous Brothers" is to the Download on rpc1.org. (ck) -

Re:We trust Google.... don't we.
I (often) half-jokingly describe Google as the compendium of all the world's knowledge. But I wonder how long that would continue if they actually did anything evil?
There are a lot of search engines out there, and while Google is currently at the top of the list, nobody stays there forever. I can remember a time when Netscape was on top [I hear jwz in my head: shut up! :-)] For awhile it was Yahoo! and Altavista had a turn. Now it's Google.
I'm just a lowly coder. I'm not enough of a visionary to know who will be on top in a year. I hope it's Google, but I'm entirely prepared for it to be Amazon or Altavista (again; has anybody noticed their recent changes?) or some brilliant kids from some community college somewhere who have nothing but a hosting account and some algorithms that will change the world.
