Re:People use Skype?
Gees no dude. Long duration video calls are for smart TVs and eParties. Where people from afar remotely attend your digital gathering. Don't think just video phone calls, although that is not a bad thing, you'll be able to tell that person calling you trying to sell you some shite, to fuck off, right to their face and they'll be able to see how pissed off you are and maybe changed profession. I would like to see the face of everyone I speak to on the phone, to see their eyes, to monitor their facial expressions, to get real feed back and of course to provide it to them.
As for alternatives to M$ Skype https://alternativeto.net/soft..., there are a whole fistful. The only way M$ can get customers now is to buy them in, than they promptly try to monetise them, piss them off and lose them. Everyone tells M$ what they are doing wrong and in the most arrogant fashion M$ routinely ignores them until it is too late. Losses them as customers to another company, which M$ then buys and then drives those customers off again.
M$ all you fucking morons have to do is climb off you bullshit arrogant high horse and start listening to your customers, otherwise, make no mistake, you are fucked.

Re:Good riddance if true
So, if iTunes goes away....and I wouldn't mind a better interface, but will there be anything left on MacOS that allows me to catalog, rip and manage MY music local?
That's the laugh: There have pretty much ALWAYS been alternatives to iTunes for macOS available from 3rd Parties. I happen to like iTunes; so I don't have much experience with these Applications, but I know they exist, and have for years in one form or another:
Kodi: This was formerly the XBMC Project. It has been available on multiple platforms for years and years. It and Plex (below) are the heavy-hitters in this world, IMHO.
Plex: Originally grew out of the XBMC Project, as a Mac-specific version of same.
Probably the most full-featured Media Server/Player Combination. Too many features and platforms to mention here. Also check out the companion macOS PlexAmp lightweight Player.https://www.plex.tv/plex-labs/...
VLC: Plays anything that even PRETENDS to be a music or video file! Versions available back to OS X 10.0 Cheetah, FFS!!! I don't know if it can Rip; but it sure can PLAY!!!
https://www.videolan.org/vlc/d...
And I found a nice page that aggregates these things, here it is:

Haha
You mean like this? https://d2.alternativeto.net/d...
-
Nope!
Does anyone remember back when Microsoft decided to unceremoniously remove A/V support from the linux version? Calls stopped working without any notice, and a fix took at least four months.
No thanks. I will never rely on Skype ever again. The good news is that in 2017, there are many alternatives which work just as well, if not better. Pick one and help it grow.

Re:Surely not the only solution.
A useful site that may give you alternative to proprietary software is here but you have to keep in mind that the software that you get may not be a compleat "drop in " replacement for Microsoft Windows-centric software and you may have to do some learning depending on how complex your original software was.
As for hardware well you should always do your homework as to what is Linux compatible although as far as most modern PC's that should not be an issue but there are always exceptions. Actually, why do you need a sound card since Ryzen and Kaby Lake require different motherboards which should come with a decent sound system? My Z170 motherboard which is compatible with Skylake and Kaby Lake has a 7.1 sound system.
If you are an avid PC gamer and crave the latest Microsoft-centric games then basically you are stuck with MS Windows. Of course, there is compatibility software like Wine although you can always use a virtual machine with a version of MS Windows you trust cough! I get around this by having an original FAT PS3 and a PS4.

Don't suggest, $ugge$t
If you need that program and it's so special or difficult that nobody has tried to write it yet, you'll have to pay for people's time. There are a number of code bounty sites. From a quick web search: coderbounty, sourceforge:helpwanted, bountysource, freedomsponsors and other alternatives. I haven't used any of them, so no idea how much publicity they get you.
Maybe you get more exposure if you offer a bounty on Stackexchange. Even if nobody accepts the coding challenge, you may get valuable advice in the answers.
Of course monetary incentives for creative work will fail if there's no intrinsic motivation (see Dan Pink, "Drive"). But funding can give a coder the time needed to attack a problem they find interesting.

Re: 20 years
I'll be the first to say that there's really no good equivalent for some applications like Photoshop, Illustrator, etc. For those you'll need a Windows box. However, the vast majority of people don't those applications.
You can always find alternatives to most computer applications and in many cases, the alternative while not being feature to feature identical are good enough for most people and in the case of Linux are usually free and well maintained.
For "Photoshop" the Gimp is pretty much identical and for "Illustraltor" you could use Inkscape . Of course, you will always get people who say "But it is not the same as [name your Windows-centric product here]" then it becomes rather pointless even attempting to point out the alternatives.

Re:In a country far far away
Well I can't run most games I play in Linux. I can't use Photoshop. My business software also doesn't work in Linux (Sage stuff, mostly). Open Office is a horrible replacement for MS Office when I have to deal with people who still use MS Office (most). So no, I don't think there is a place in the Linux world for me right now. I wish there was; I certainly give it a try every few years.
Like someone else said, have you tried to find alternatives? Or is Photoshop just convenient because you are familiar with it? alternativeto.net lists 20+ alternatives that work in Linux:

Re:Not Surprising
Yeah, ditch it. Or roll back to the last version before the original author sold it to the wolves, you can find it on ApkMirror. Look for version 4.0.2.3. You'll have to double check with another root file manager if that version is already sending back logs to China or not, ES hides the log file. You can unpack and repack the
.apk installer to either change the name or resign the package, either one will stop the update manager from trying to install the new ruined version. You don't get SMB security patches that way though.Amaze is Open Source and in the Play Store,

Re:Don't care, wish they would focus on playabilit
Really? Lots of emulators for actual arcade systems? Examples please. I search online and I can find front ends for MAME everywhere, but if the backend has broken compatibility with a particular ROM that doesn't make a difference, does it? Let's be specific. I want to find a non-MAME Namco emulator to play the -arcade- version of Pacman, as well as several other ROMs I've downloaded over the years. Ok, I'm searching "arcade emulator alternatives to mame". If you think this is a poor search then give me a better one. Here's the first result:
http://alternativeto.net/softw...
And what's the top result here, RetroArch. OK, that looks promising. Download. Unzip. Figure out the needlessly obtuse UI (Seriously, a main menu with no fucking mouse support? I am supposed to magically know to use the arrow keys and X and Z to navigate? What. The. Actual. Fuck.). OK, did a Goggle search, got the secret info, past that, let's play a game. Oh, first I need 'cores'. OK, wait, the core is fucking MAME. RetroArch is a front end. Why the fuck is it then the top choice on a page for ALTERNATIVES to fucking MAME. Pacman plays, but for quite a few of my ROMs Retroarch just bombs back to the desktop. Even if I try all FOUR MAME core options. No error message. No log file. No fucking shit at all.
And people praise open source to high heaven while the user experience is total shit.
BTW: I did also make several attempts to search -specifically- for Namco arcade emulators, and found nothing useful at all. The 2nd and 3rd links from my original search didn't product anything useful either, and the fourth matching result from Google is "Why does MAME suck so bad". That says something. -
Finding similar tools
I know there's merit in asking for people's insight in a forum like this but I wanted to share a resource that can help you discover software. Alternativeto.net is great for answering questions like this. Simply perform an online search: alternativeto . You mentioned Ardour, so here is the resulting page. You can filter by platform, free-ness, and whether it's open or closed source. Take the rankings with a grain of salt and just use it as a way to find software in the category you're interested in. They even add notes when software hasn't been updated in years. I find it a lot more useful than other too exhaustive or infrequently updated lists out there, such as most Wikipedia lists.
I know nothing about professional musicianship or production, but I like messing around with LMMS. It has a great interface, plenty of tutorials out there, and it's fun to make electronic music with. So it might not meet your needs at all, but it makes making music as a hobbyist very accessible.

Re:iOS is toys, OS X is Unix. Learn the difference
Nah. Macs have far worse and basic problems all over the place. For example, finder not having a cut function, or a keyboard shortcut to rename files.Of course if has no useful extensions like TortoiseSVN either. The "app bar" thing sucks, and so does alt-tab not cycling through minimized programs, and there's no equivalent to alt-f4 either. The whole damn thing seems horribly crippled. It's by far the worst user interface I've ever used (including various Linux flavors, OS/2 and others)
"Cut" in Finder would be a ridiculously-dangerous thing; however, if you hold the Option key while Drag-Copying a file, it WILL do a "Move" instead of a Copy. That has existed since the MacOS Classic days (don't remember which version, but it was pretty early-on). And, holding "Shift" while Drag-Copying a file will create an Alias (Shortcut) instead of copying the source file.
El Capitan (OS X 10.11) will introduce a Contextual Menu Item "Rename", and with OS X, it is trivial to add Keyboard Shortcuts to Applications (or system-wide). So that's another one down....
As for the other things, it sounds like you're simply wanting OS X to act like Windows. ALT-F4 is HARDLY a Universal Standard, get over it. Learn Command-Q. My biggest issue going back and forth between Windows and OS X has always been Windows' use of Ctrl-C/X/V/Z for the almost always-used Cut/Copy/Paste/Undo. It ALWAYS trips me up when I am at work on my Windows laptop, and then use my Mac at home. Yes, Keyboard Maestro can remap Command-C/X/V/Z, but then I feel "unclean" using them on my Mac, LOL!
As for TortoiseSVN, I am not too familiar with that, but there are Subversion clients for OS X. Here's one I found in about 2 seconds on Google. Here is a list of more alternatives to Tortoise for OS X.
As for the ALT-TAB not cycling through minimized apps: Here is a way to do it from the keyboard. I'll admit it seems a little kludgy; but name me any OS that doesn't have a few of those. Personally, I can count on about 3 fingers the number of times I have used Command-TAB on my Mac in the fifteen years I have used OS X. -

Block using DNS at your router; no custom firmware
Try FoolDNS or others on this page:
http://alternativeto.net/softw...
If only APK would spend his time developing a DNS service we could all use for free instead of client software. (Push the hosts file to the DNS resolver that ALL devices use.)
If the "smart TV" uses it's own DNS, simply block all outbound port 53 traffic other than your router itself.

Re: OneNote
Yeah, because no FLOSS projects people can come to rely on are ever abandoned.
Open source absolutely has a lot of advantages over proprietary software, but let's not pretend that it's not subject to most of the same software engineering concerns. A five-year-old source dump isn't a whole lot of use when it relies on a long-deprecated version of a library (also open source) that's not backward compatible, and so on.
Yes, with FLOSS, you have the option to become/commission a new maintainer for an entire toolchain, but if you're being practical rather than idealistic, you'd spend so much time and money doing so, you'd never have the opportunity to use it. And gods help you if a second of your beloved applications was abandoned.

"frozen" configurations
Freeze all system changes except saving into the the documents folder. There are a number of programs to do it, seems the most popular is Deep Freeze. It allows all system changes, but after reboot it is all gone. Some tweaking will allow making a few things persistent, such as the documents.

Re:Bloat
Not always. I often get "The content owner has not made this video available on mobile" on my Nexus 7.
You know what you never see on your Nexus 7? Flash. Well....unless you don't upgrade to Kitkat, track down the apk and install it manually. That's not going to be a very popular option.
Nor do they offer the slightest bit of interactivity. What's the multi-platform successor to Flash games?
In spirit? Phones and mobile, produced using multi-platform game engines. I see people passing around goofy phone apps the way that they used to pass around goofy Flash games. As the closest-related technology? HTML5.
Except for PC users on satellite Internet.
Again, like I said, it depends on your audience. Honestly, I've never met anyone with satellite internet. Still, HughesNet seems to offer some plans with some decent caps at decent prices (given what the service is).
Even if one plans to export the animations to YouTube, in which non-Adobe program should one create them in the first place?
Why would it have to be a non-Adobe program to create the animation? My problem's more with Flash/SWF than Adobe products. Edge produces HTML5 content, and is the Adobe product that's meant to succeed Flash. If you'd rather ditch Adobe products completely, from what I understand, there are alternatives.

23 you say? I get "No Results" when clicking on that link. I've looked for open source alternatives, and the only ones I found were TT-RSS and Newblur. TT-RSS doesn't fetch half my feeds and it gets the dates wrong, sometimes by as much as 4 days, on the ones it does. The sole developer is a dick swearing at his users telling them there's nothing wrong with his software, it's the feed or the user. Newsblur, according to the only online article about installing it, requires two different database engines and an S3 account to install.

Re:An example
I love Photoshop. I know it well, and can do things in it far easier than I can in GIMP, largely because of experience, but I do not have the time to invest to learn GIMP well.
If I want to make a quick button for me website, or clean up a photo, or make a nice card from my girlfriend, it is the tool I go to.
I am not well off.
Graphic design is -not- my career, therefore I really only have need to use Photoshop once a month or less.
I am not going to pay $700 or more for software that I only use 6 or 8 times a year. That equates to about $100 per project/use.
Sounds to me like you should try Paint.NET. It's my goto software for little projects like that, it's licensed Creative Commons for non-commercial use, and it boasts a very robust user base, with an abundance of plugins, tutorials and extremely helpful forums. For the casual usage you describe, I'd try it out. I've been told that the interface is very Photoshop-esque, much like a 'Photoshop Lite' (can't confirm, never used PS).
Also, the GIMP interface has improved noticeably in recent years, especially the version helpfully precompiled for Windows, but I switched over to Paint.NET when Gimp was still being a PITA, and I haven't really found any compelling reason to switch back to Gimp yet. I try it out every couple of years, to see what's new, but wind up going back to familiar ground
:)IMHO, Pirating should be the last resort, not just the first convenient resort. I also disagree with Adobe's extortionate pricing scheme, so I simply avoid using their products. Similarly for MS Office (Libre Office is simply da bomb). If there were no viable alternatives available to me...well, I'd still have to take a close look at 'wants' vs 'needs' before searching out a suitable
.torrent. Also, like mcgrew said, sometimes what you are looking for just isn't for sale by anyone, anywhere, but other fans have taken the time to preserve their favorite content and are willing to share, to keep the fanbase alive. In such cases, nobody is losing revenue, since no one is offering the content for sale, yet the show still benefits by being kept in the forefront of their fans' regard (and perhaps even by expanding their fanbase). If down the road the copyright holders do decide to release the content for sale, well, if they do it right then dedicated fans will still buy it for the extra features, and new-made fans will be motivated to check it out, ones who may never have had a chance to see the show on air.FWIW, I was the same way about the ThunderCats
:) We had pretty much the entire series on tape, with the commercials edited out (do you know what a PITA that is on VHS?), then dutifully backed up to digital storage once that was generally available. Regardless, when they finally released the DVD version a couple of years ago, I think I was the first in line to buy them :) -

Re:Anybody check OSALT?
Another place to look that I've used in the past is AlternativeTo:
http://alternativeto.net/software/adobe-dreamweaver/?license=opensourceSeems like the OP could stand to learn some googling skills.
Oooh, it seems it's been quite a while since I checked out AlternativeTo...developer's done some really nice work there!
Last time I checked it out it looked like some high school student's homework project, with links to software they liked. There was some cross-comparison of alternatives, if I recall correctly, but it didn't seem very comprehensive or user-friendly...I don't know, I found osalt and simply tended to use that instead when looking for new toys to play with
:)Looking at the AlternativeTo site now, though...sexy, very sexy. Filters by platform and license, doesn't snub commercial or freeware versions (for some stuff I do prioritize performance over license, although I use OS where possible...luckily in a lot of cases the OS alternative is also the performance winner!), and seems fairly comprehensive on quick overview.
As I said, nice work done there! Thanks for bringing me back to it!
