Re:Bamboo
I am not sure about mass production, but many of these things are already available. Things like (possible multiuse) bamboo plates and cutlery as well as disposable straws, bowls, and cups are easily available all the time here in Germany through Amazon and some times through supermarkets/discounters as well.
I suppose the main problem people have with these is their price. Most bamboo products are more expensive than single use plastic equivalents. -

That already exists. https://www.amazon.de/Lovense-...

You can buy one from any European store: https://www.amazon.de/SAMSUNG-... - it will work fine in Germany.

Re:What the fuck are you talking about?
Admittedly this is a problem I did not consider because I'm from Germany and our plugs are reversible. Likewise, plugspreading is less of a problem because most power strips have the sockets at a 45-degree angle. Purely Europlug power strips are affected but few people use them because they're incompatibe with Schuko plugs.
Besides, plugspreading becomes less of a problem if you buy a multi-port USB power brick or two. I just spent fifteen bucks on a 30W three-port brick with one Quick Charge 3 port. It's not much bigger than your typical smartphone charger, has its USB ports at the end and replaces three separate chargers. That cleared up a lot of space on the power strip.
Or you can go straight for a power strip with built-in USB ports.
(As for the Apple: You do realize that it only supplies 5W? Their 12W device has a less convenient form factor - in fact, the 18W charger that came with my smartphone has a smaller footprint than Apple's 12W one.) -
I wrote a story about that
Well, not only about hacking. An invasion by hostile aliens only takes 3 days because of their superior electronic warfare capabilities. Shameless self-slashvertising for anyone who is interested and can read German (sorry, no English!): Invasion der Ausserirdischen in Berlin-Mitte.

From a strictly financial point of view
My favorite topic that everyone always gets upset about. You don’t buy a house because it makes sense from the financial point of view; you buy it because it makes you feel good.
There is sufficient literature showing that the long-term inflation-adjusted returns—or savings—on homes have been lower than those of risk-free bonds, to say nothing of equity. Since the article asks about “readers around the world”, here is one such book in German. The author does a financial evaluation of home ownership over several decades in Germany and other developed countries. It makes no sense to buy a home outright and even less sense to buy it on credit as is typically the case.
An important factor in this discussion that is usually pulled out of the air by well-meaning but not financially savvy individuals is that homes are “safe investments”. They are not. By buying a home, you are putting a large portion of your net worth into a single asset type: homes in your area. Any decrease in housing prices or the quality of your area in general immediately results in a huge decrease of your net worth. If you have to sell your house for any of a myriad of reasons, you lose a lot of money. Furthermore, an uninsured home is a very risky asset, as it may just burn down one day, whereas an insured home further reduces the growth of its value due to the costs of insurance. Lastly, if you actually want to sell your home and you are lucky to get some kind of profit out of it, you are facing considerable transaction costs and much lower liquidity than you would be if you were trying to sell a market-listed instrument.
All of these make personal housing bad investments. The only two good things that come out of such a purchase is that you have the freedom to restructure your house as much as you like and that you are effectively forced to save more by the virtue of the home financing company breathing down your back. Both come at a great cost.
I rent and I strongly encourage everyone to briefly study the available literature on the topic before coming to erroneous conclusions that you will be “saving on the rent” or “investing into something very safe”. On the bright side, these erroneous conclusions are the reason why those of us who did do due diligence get to rent so cheaply. Thanks homeowners.
P.S.: This does not transfer to commercial properties and REITS.

Worst thing about Amazon right now is the scammers
Would not worry that much about Chinese sellers, instead Amazon really needs to sort out their Marketplace and remove all the scammers which pop up recently. It seems to be the New Thing for scammers to put up notebooks/DSLR and other higher price items at prices which go from "very good price" to "omg what a deal", and when someone is dumb enough to fall for such an offer, the scammer tries to handle payment outside Amazon (only to then disappear with the money and the buyer has no Amazon payment protection). If you do not agree to pay outside of Amazon, the item you want to buy suddenly is not available anymore, of course. Sometimes these scammers even use hacked seller accounts. These scam offers ruin any search for items at a normal price because of course only these fake super low prices are shown in the search results. Look e.g. here, this camera normally goes for 3500+ Euro new, see all the "used-very good" results at less than half the price (totally unrealistic prices for this high end DSLR) and the "write to us xxxx@yyyy.de": https://www.amazon.de/gp/offer...

Re:repair part costs
Like the opener for the glove box on my Audi A4. Price for the original part on Amazon:
Approx. 35 Euro. Link: https://www.amazon.de/Original-Audi-Verschluss-Handschuhfach-Swing/dp/B00J2WHB3G/ref=sr_1_4?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1465668691&sr=1-4&keywords=handschuhfach+audi+a4
Note that the stupid thing has a tendency for breaking, I already had fixed it two times with glue. So it was not even very good for 35 Euros. My solution:
A replica from aluminum and wood, much more sturdy. Cost me a few hours in the workshop (but almost no money), but will probably survive the car. -
Re: The NAND isn't 20nm
The main reason is that SD cards is supposed to be used cameras and other portable devices. Updating the SD connector to be yet another SATA variant would mean that a new slower card standard would have to be developed to work with portable devices.
Accessing SD-cards doesn't require external driver circuits and balanced signals. Some ARM controllers have support for connecting the SD directly to the CPU and if it doesn't support that you can still connect it on a simple SPI interface. There already are memory cards that you can stick directly into the SATA port as you suggest, but since people mainly use memory cards to talk with devices that doesn't support SATA it never took off.
It is not a new idea, it just didn't work that well. -

KBT Poker 2
I bought this keyboard last summer and I am so damned happy about it.
- It's very compact: no FX raw, no numpad, no arrow keys.
- Mechanical
- Backlit
- Macros (up to 14 characters IIRC)Something that it really annoyed me at first but afterwards I have realized that is a very intelligent decision: the location of the "arrow keys" on the left side of the keyboard. I am an avid vim short cuts user ( vimperator extension on my Firefox, kwrite/kate with vi-compatibility, heavy user of vim ) and having my fingers on hjkl and not having to move my hand whenever I have to move around with the arrow keys ( when switching to a program withough vim-like behaveour) is fantastic
:-)All in all: FANTASTIC keyboard

If they're old enough to surf on their own ...
If they're old enough to surf on their own, they're old enough to handle it on their own.
It is - to a degree - your call if they are old enough to do so, but countermeasures to keep the "bad internet" away from your children, if you are geek enough to allow them access, is a bit of an oxymoron.
Hint: If they want to see porn and/or Isis set someone on fire, they will do so. If not at home then at/with their friends. Trying to prevent this is being silly. Once I trusted my daughter to handle her own Ubuntu Netbook I also trusted her to handle the web.
... I did curb her webtime though, it can get out of hand. ... But she uses the web and her smartphone as an extension for her social life, not as a substitute. She's actually more on the go than I am, and unwinds not surfing but streaming american teenie serials to improve her english (currenty the 100 is hip). Not the worst thing to do, imho. Her homework gets done and she's due for her a-levels, so who am I to complain?I had a discussion a few years back with a mom of one of her very close friends. She too was worried that the new laptop would enable them to watch porn and get a false impression about sexuality. I basically said the same thing that I wrote above and bit my lip about her habit of changing boyfriends every odd month - something way more likely of determining her daughters POV on relationships and sexuality.
Ask them to learn something productive with them - my daughter eventually decided to do a little image editing and I got her a neat colorful book on Gimp of which she duefully did some excersises and learned a little about files, photography and image manipulation. Good thing for a teenage girl exposed to a cosmetics/fashion industry in constant overdrive. She didn't want to learn programming though.
... I'll survive that I guess.Tell them about Facebook, Whatsapp, data mining, automated 24/7 surveilance, scams, rapists, shady friends, online mobbing (both sides of it!), etc.. Give them fake accounts and tell them to never use their real name and adress and to be suspicious of the web in general - including mainstream news.
Bottom line:
Be a good father, take care of your kids and make a reasonable judgement as to when they're ready to have their own computer.
Do the basics to keep them out of harms way (hint: porn is way, way down on that list) and make sure they've understood what you're talking about and have no fear of coming to you whenever they're insecure about something internet related. Let the rest take its course. ... That's parenting 101 for you.My 2 cents.

A serious academic study of this topic . . .
. . . can be found here: http://www.amazon.de/gp/produc...
This is really a topic for psychologists and not statisticians, because, well . . . people tend to lie on questionnaires. And there is a lot more going on in marital processes than simple numbers can reveal.

Re:good decission
I couldn't disagree more. Isn't it strange that the court decides that way while it is not at all illegal to produce and sell lockpicks?
I think the makers of software should not be liable to any illegal activity conducted with their software, just as a knife maker shouldn't be held liable for knife killings. On the other hand, software makers, just like engineers, should be held liable to some extent for grave software bugs or security flaws (e.g. ones that lead to loss of millions of credit card numbers), yet they often face no consequences at all.
One potential problem to me is that I have a strong sense of justice, inherited from my mother who cannot even lie when it would make sense, and nevertheless have the impression that laws all over the world become increasingly injust - especially patent and copyright related laws. I guess that means that I have sort of a criminal mind

There is a similar solution for Blackberry z10
BLACKBERRY Battery Charger Bundle fuer Z10
The charger allows daisy-chain connection for the phone (or any other micro USB device). I have learned that it effectively works like the "usb condom". Additional feature is that it shields the phone from the charging device, not only a computer. This allows for the use of dumb chargers. Otherwise the phone (BB Z10) gets too smart and only draws 500mA where the charger is actually capable of 2A.
Blackberry is not doing too well now as a company, but I still like them for the hardware and those small niceties like cheap but durable accessories. The headset for BB9700 costed 3 Euro and was of great quality. But I digress. -

Kir Bulychev
I'd recommend Kir Bulychev (his website in russian) or Kir Bulytschow (german). At least to the russian or german speaking folks of us as I can't find any english versions of his books which is too bad since I really loved them when I was young. Especially Die lila Kugel (The violet sphere) was one I devoured (just grabbed a used copy at Amazon - so, thanks for reminding me of my childhood).

Re:Not just analytic...
Religion was the world's first science.
Nice soundbite.
Unfortunately, also utter bullshit.
I can strongly recommend The Golden Bough for a good read on magic and religion and, as an aside, how science came to be and how they all relate to each other.
Basically, magical thinking was there first. Over time, people realized that it fails more often than it succeeds. Religion was the "proprietary fork" that resulted. Didn't work out too well, either, but it was too strict and too many people had invested too much for an easy reversal, so it continued on, with a different agenda (much like modern politics). Magical thinking persisted, and continued to fail, but started another "fork" - science.

Re:Why did they think this would work?
You know you can buy solar panels with buffer cells and ~1000mA USB output for about $200, right?
I'm looking at getting this next time I have a little too much cash laying around: http://www.amazon.de/Aurora-Solarladeger%C3%A4te-Handys-iPhone-MP3-Player/dp/B0049U3GQC/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1319908425&sr=8-6
Add a ~5000mAh battery pack (good for about two or three charges of my smartphone) and I'm set for camping, festivals and the like... panel + battery pack are placed in the car during the day, and the phone gets charged off of the (hopefully full) battery pack at night.

Yes, but internationally the definition varies and is
.xxx really .xxx.us? Of course we agree on certain things but let's take this BluRay as example. In Germany that's ok for 16+ year olds, it's not pornography which has an 18yo limit. Would you sell this to a 16yo in the US? My impression would be no. -
Re:Hello HDFury
So, I did a little looking around on the web and my question is where do I buy an HDFury? As far as I can tell it is no more. Nobody seems to have any inventory.
Well, you could try here if you're in Canada, or try here if you're in the UK, or try here if you're in Germany, or try here if you're in Australia, or try here if you're in South Africa.
These were all from a quick google search (it found many others also), and some of them claimed to have the items "in stock". However, the search results did not seem to have any sites in the US which are still selling them, so maybe you're SOL if that's where you live. -
Re:Who is this for, really?
Lets see... I don't like when people combine different coins without providing exact change rate... it makes their argument missleading.
So, PS3 Move starter pack and the like:
120.91 Euro for starter pack + 1 nuncuck + game
28.98 Euro for another nunchuck
59.99 Euro for another controller
Total. 210.88Wii black pack and the like:
CONSOLE with 1 motion-plus control + nunchuck: 191.99 Euro
Wii motion plus controller = 41.50
Wii Nunchuck = 16.77
Total: 250,26So, you are talking that for 40 Euros more you get a new console which already as *a ton* of games where you can use the motion sensing controller.
That being said, what I don't like about the Wii motion plus is that there are actually not many good or interesting games in which you can use the MOTION PLUS. I sincerey hope that now that Sony is starting to eat some of Nintendo's market, we will see better games using such controls.

MeeGo
Oh good, some remembered the MeeGo option, I was surprised you Open-source buffs didn't pounce on this one immediately.
Check out the video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EdNBTwHxWk, it's quite nice, and seeing it run Open Office give me great hope that it will not have to worry about the whole "does it have apps?" question, since it will most likely run all existing linux apps.
Details here: http://wetab.mobi/en/product-details
Amazon( http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B003JFKUSK ) lists this as starting from EUR 449, though I would take that figure with a pinch of salt.
I am hoping a lot more companies seriously consider MeeGo, I kinda like it

Re:Soooo, Adobe loves open markets?
Of the versions you showed, the US version is for Vista, and the EU version is for Mac. Of course the Mac version is more expensive. It's for Mac (which means people will pay a much higher price for the exact same product even if it doesn't work as well as on competitors hardware; also development costs are spread across a smaller marketbase thus raising price), and its in the EU (which means it has VAT). Meanwhile, the same product comparatively, when both version are for vista, shows http://www.amazon.de/Adobe-Creative-Master-Collection-deutsch/dp/B003FSSL5K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=software&qid=1273780415&sr=1-1
The Vista EU version is 1784 Euro, which is 2230 USD. Its cheaper in Europe for the same product.
This, by the way, is a fairly niche product that hasn't been released yet, and due to its price, will only be purchased by those who have a very real need for it. No one is buying this unless they already have a way to profit from it or they are super rich and spend their money on software instead of cars and vacation houses.
If you don't like European software laws, set up your company in the US (business registrations are along the lines of $250 a year, and if you can't afford that but for some reason need $2500 software packages, you might try another line of business, for example not having one) and set up a European subsidiary that has to follow the software of the parent company in order to gain work. File everything under US GAAP and make sure you have a residence. A US citizen in name owning the company probably wouldn't hurt (keeping you as either an employee or a [non-general] partner. At any rate, keep the liability in the US, and you can use US software no problem. On the other hand, unless you are a fairly large (publicly traded or on the cusp of doing so) company, hiring expats for the sake of saving money on software doesn't really make any sense. While you *can* do this, it definitely won't be worth the time or effort.
-
Soooo, Adobe loves open markets?
Great! Now if they would be kind enough to adjust the European prices for their products so that they are not 2 times more expensive than in the US.
Observe:
http://www.amazon.com/Adobe-Creative-Suite-Master-Collection/dp/B003B328TE/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=software&qid=1273768517&sr=1-3 - $2,450.99
http://www.amazon.de/Adobe-Creative-Master-Collection-deutsch/dp/B003FSSL3M/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=software&qid=1273768468&sr=1-5 - EUR 3,688.00 = $4,683.39
And thanks to some european laws that Adobe strongly supports and enforces (with the help of BSA) it is illegal for an european company to use software bought in the US.
Yay for open markets. -

Re:Just read the story
That's probably wrong actually. You see, the report first said that the child was playing with a black Wii controller that resembled a gun. The guys at Kotaku saw this as suspicios and went to see if one could actually purchase such a thing and this is the only one they came up with that seems to match. Thing is, unless the father went to a lot of trouble to specifically buy a hard-to-find type of controller, it's unlikely this is what was used.
There are a variety of peripherals which would seem to be potential candidates, But I'd guess it to be more likely it was on of these with a little creativity from the parents.Realistic looking light guns used to be quite common, like this one http://www.amazon.de/gp/customer-media/product-gallery/B00008P02A/ref=cm_ciu_pdp_images_0?ie=UTF8&index=0

Re:Because it's a gay site? Or is it because...
That is why in Germany, it’s mandatory to have an imprint page with that information on it.
If you do business in Germany, and lack such a page, be prepared to get sued. As it’s 1. illegal, and 2. there are tons of law firms who have specialized on searching the net for German pages without an imprint, and writing you evil letters. (Which you have to pay always. No matter what.)Here is Amazon’s German imprint page: http://www.amazon.de/gp/help/customer/display.html/ref=footer_impressum?ie=UTF8&nodeId=505050
It says: “Amazon.de GmbH, CEO: Ralf Kleber, commercial register registration number: 129699, VAT ID: DE 176 943 476”
And “Amazon.de is the trade name for Amazon EU S.a.r.l., Amazon Services Europe S.a.r.l. and the Amazon Media EU S.a.r.l..”
[S.a.r.l. (in Luxemburg) = GmbH (in Germany) = limited (US/UK)]Then it says: [My own translation. IANAL.]
This website (except Marketplace) is operated by the Amazon EU S.a.r.l., 5, Rue Plaetis - 2338 Luxemburg (VAT ID: DE 814584193, recorded register number Luxemburg: B0101818).
The Amazon.de Marketplace- and zShops platform, just as other offers for third parties of this website, are operated by the Amazon Services Europe S.a.r.l, 5, Rue Plaetis, L-2338 Luxemburg (VAT ID: LU 19647148, recorded register number Luxemburg: B0093815).
The MP3 Music Service is operated by the Amazon Media EU S.a.r.l., 5, Rue Plaetis, L-2338 Luxemburg (recorded register number Luxemburg: B0112767).Interestingly, I know this street, and I doubt they have anything else than a letterbox company there.
So you see: A name, and address, other contact data, and even an commercial register number don’t mean shit, if the company doesn’t want it. (Also, this being Luxemburg, they most likely bought half the parliament anyway. Just like e.g. Dupond or about a billion banks from all around the world. [Luxemburg city has pretty much a bank on every street corner!]) -

Re:Germans and Wolfenstein ....
I think you're confusing Germany with Japan. Japan gloss over their ww2 history with the atrocities they inflicted upon their neighbors and that is part of an on going problem to this day.
The Germans do not have a culture of denial. Time is spent covering this theme although it varies from instructor to instructor what material is covered. On average I would say anywhere from 3 to 4 months is spent studying but it is not a tabu thema.
Damals war es Friedrich is a book that is usually covered in class. The reason for the ban of symbols, greetings etc. are set in the constitution. Example: Imagine if you will that Democrats are outlawed - to be a member is illegal, the party is not official, the symbols are illegal. Fast forward 60 years and it becomes a big PC issue. -

Sorry, but first of all, your lack of arguments to back your statement, means that you obviously don’t know SHIT. Second, your writing style assumes that you’re an ass. But I will overlook that.
Now for the facts: UHT-milk is heated to 150 degrees Celsius. Something that most proteins and vitamins, etc, can not stand. The molecules denature.
If you remember: We humans take meds because above 42 degrees Celsius body temperature, our proteins denature to the point where it becomes deadly.
Then that cooked liquid is blended extremely fine, which destroys the lumps of fats, but unfortunately also some molecules.
So UHT-“milk” is as much milk, as your cooked and blended finger is still alive. But I agree, that all this still does not have to be bad. (Although it is obviously very likely.)
Unfortunately those proteins, being complex molecular machines, (that would now be sparking and dragging parts behind them when they were normal machines,) work in a different way in our body, when they are destroyed in that way. The effects are very different. Of course we still can use them for energy. But where they are used as-is, they cause bad effects for our health. One very real proof I got, is a good friend of mine. Who literally got completely free of his “incurable” asthmatic allergy, as soon as he stopped consuming such proteins. Usually he had to use the inhalator trough the whole summer. But that summer he used it exactly once. And the next summer, it was gone. Finito. That’s it. he couldn’t believe it.
But he got the idea from a German doctor called “Dr. med. M. O. Bruker” who was the head of a clinic for about 30 years. According to him, what I stated is proven through all the thousands upon thousands of patients he treated during his career. And, well, testing it for ourselves, and actually seeing it being true, is a convincing argument, wouldn’t you say?But I do not even expect you to believe me. Test it yourself. But beware that many diseases caused by processed food result in diseases only after some decades of doing it wrong. It’s what we call “age-related diseases”. But really they don’t come because of the age, but only with the age.
So who is “fucking ignorant” here?

Re:Those 2007 Amazon "sales charts"
You didn't read far enough. Take look at this article and the actual bestseller list at Amazon. In the category "notebooks", first and fifth are Linux machines.
