Re:I call BS
Worst case if you get a new TV that doesn't have optical out anymore, you can get a cheap adapter that converts ARC to optical.
-
Re:I'm getting old.
I understand your concerns, but these adapters are basically just wiring and physical supports. There are hardly any electronics involved (perhaps a discrete voltage regulator, judging from the images). If you would be willing to trust a non-OEM SATA cable and mounting bracket then I wouldn't see any reason not to trust a non-OEM M.2 to SATA adapter.
There are some higher-end models which provide a full 2.5" enclosure for your M.2 drive for $20-30, if you want the extra peace of mind.

Re:I'm getting old.
I get the M.2 format's advantages, but I don't understand why they wouldn't offer the same drives in SATA packaging.
If you need the SATA packaging to fit existing hardware you can get M.2 to SATA adapters for $8-10:

Re:What's the answer?
Two-factor authentication is probably the best solution -- unless your phone is at the bottom of the river, or your employer puts you in a spot where phone service is non-existent, like the basement.
Some services (ie Google) allow you to have a backup phone number. So my advice is buy yourself a cheap Android phone with a pay as you go SIM just for these types of situations. It's cheap insurance. Some people even use a freedompop sim which is totally free. So $50-$100 onetime cost for the phone and $0 monthly cost.

Re:I like to move my SD card to a new phone, maybe
If you're OK with only have the SD card available part of the time, something like the Dash Micro microSD card reader for USB OTG devices might be a solution. It's relatively cheap ($13 at Amazon), small enough to keep on a keychain, and plugs directly into the phone's USB OTG port.

Re:I've already sort-of done this.
The chassis I got was not a cheap solution, no. There's a huge price-gap between the single card chassis and the three. The single card here is only $220 (it's marketed as a dual but one slot is perma-Thunderbolt card). Don't think I didn't consider getting multiple single card boxes and just chaining them together. It actually would have cost less up front, but I would have had to get more cables - which are insanely expensive - worry about having more power, and worry about keeping it all plugged in when many users (not this guy in particular) take it upon themselves to do stupid stuff with equipment they know nothing about.
No, move to a box like this and it gets into the reasonably affordable range.
My biggest issue is Thunderbolt is relatively rare.
-
I've already sort-of done this.
One of my users was on a big gray Mac Pro, with a fiber card to access the SAN and an AJA card that puts video on the preview/client preview monitors - it's a video card, but a really strange one that acts more as a codec than a traditional video card.
When that machine became a crash-fest I moved him over to a newer Mac Pro trashcan. That fiber card and AJA card can't be put in the trashcan as it lacks PCIe slots. So I got this Magma Thunderbolt PCIe housing. That AJA card working in there beautifully. I doubt the Quadro Pro from his old system would work in that thing (it might - I may have to experiment one day) but I have little doubt a budget GeForce card would work in there.
I could totally plug my ThinkPad W540 into that box and just about any of the newer Macbooks in the building accomplishing what this article is all about.
Still - intentional and standardized would be nice. Especially with all these Mac people in my building - it would be nice to have GPU's in the Thunderbolt monitors we have floating around - it could save us money when buying laptops if we didn't have to worry about which laptop went to who as long as the monitor was able to handle the job.

True story...of SV40
Between 1954 and 1963, close to 98 million Americans received polio vaccinations contaminated with a carcinogenic monkey virus, now known as SV40.
It may sound like the stuff of conspiracy buffs, but it is in fact a true story. Doctors had to go in front of congress and testify to get the contaminated vaccines pulled.
I had a brother in the age range to have gotten this polio vaccine, and he died from a brain tumor in his early 50s. Anecdotal, yes. Dead, yes.

Kodi, Mac Pro 1.1
I'm running Kodi on a First Gen Intel Mac Pro 2x2 Xeon. Plenty for what I need. I've got a lot of hard drives plugged in for various libraries, some Firewire. I do all the ripping on my Linux system that has a bunch of optical drives and actually outperforms the Mac on that task.
I'm thinking about switching it over to Linux, a lot of the Kodi plugins don't work and I'm not sure if that's because it's on a Mac or the plugins just suck. I'm going to test them on my Linux box first.
I use the Yatse Remote for my phone, a Rii Keyboard as the "common remote", and I have the HTTP remote enabled so my wife can operate it from her fruit phone (I can't explain how the remote disappears so often).
Also my now elderly LG BluRay player with UPNP and DLNA support is on my desk in my office - it's not very reliable anymore but I can use it to play anything on the server on an extra HDMI monitor I have. It wasn't reliable enough to leave in the living room anymore, but okay tor occasional geek use.
I really need a new TV. I've still got a 36" Dimatron CRT with a VGA to S-Video converter box. At least the setup in my office actually does HD.....

Re:There goes a few Democrat votes....
Both sides like to point their finger at the other side.
Truth is Obama got the primary by massive amounts of "Chicago Politics" against Hillary, who probably would have got the nomination without them. Then in the general election they pulled the "bus voters around to multiple polls" trick. Here's some Democrats talking about it.
Four years later the Republican party conspired across the country to keep Ron Paul off the radar. Many of the tactics used were directly from the Obama playbook, plus rule changes that allowed for arbitrary delegate placement if the folks at the top of the party didn't like your candidate. Here's a good book on the subject.
I'll say, historically Democrats are probably worse, those dead people sure do like to vote in Chicago, but in the modern day both of the top parties are horrible about it. The last presidential election I'm sure only had minimal local cheating instead of nationwide coordinated cheating involved Reagan.

Re:3rd Wave Feminism is causing this.
It seemed even tempered and well thought out to me, even if her commentary was on blog posts. These weren't Slashdot rants, or even rants in general, what I saw as real case studies, just a modern format.
Her original commentary on the man-cave phenomenon and what have you really was thought provoking.
On the other hand, another book I've read on the topic - also written by a woman - that I can not recommend fits into the hurts not helps category. This one was well researched and I must say is a fairly accurate, pre-blog post era writing, so you can't hang that on it, but the author was so angry and accusatory I usually can't suggest it to anyone, for the sole purpose she was so angry about it.
-
3rd Wave Feminism is causing this.
Odds are stacked against men. From the fake "rape culture" propaganda and an environment that ensures if she regrets a hook up you will too, stacked courts, diminishing reasons to get married. Why hook up with a woman when she can change her mind, take at minimum half your stuff, and if you have kids the courts are stacking in such a way that a man will lose?
Men are playing video games and retreating from women and normal society in general because masculine men have an uphill battle to fight. When even former places of refuge for men to be masculine are attempting to force masculinity out of society men are retreating even further into their own self contained worlds.
3rd wave feminist recognized that men were retreating into games so they created the Gamer Gate fiasco which was nothing more than a false flag bitch-a-thon trying to take over that refuge as well. It's still a bit early to say, but I think they failed, but since Gamer Gate was nothing more than a political move rest assured, there will be another double-downed attempt to destroy that refuge again.
Here's a really good book on the subject written by a woman no less, so don't dismiss it as just men sitting around bitching.

avidemux
As the proprietary vendors business models change, Linux video editing has increasing advantages, e.g. the lack of "subscription" business model. Avidemux is very powerful and actively developed.
If you have a Windows install and you buy Adobe Premiere Elements for $90, you will discover you must sign in, and Premiere Elements will max out your incoming internet connection for the entire time the program is open. But Premiere Elements works fine for video editing if you disable networking in control panel. So what's it doing with all that bandwidth?! -
Re:FM receptionI have had the oppsite exprence:
The cheap (~$10) chineese chargers = no interference, but you really need a 3A supply if you are going to use it with GPS on and hope to keep your device at least even on power. I bought 2 because the first one didn't use a micro usb input which meant I had to have an extra cable if I wanted to directly connect for a faster charge.
The expensive OWL charger ($50 and also not mini or micro usb) which I got for my dad as a present totally messes up the radio and only comes with a 1A charger so I'm guessing it can't keep up (never used it long enough to find out due to the radio interference and aux in hiss it generated). I contacted OWL about a fix or refund, but have yet to receive a response.

Re: Clearly
It costs a couple of bucks to produce a headphone, and the bulk of the research into sound quality was finished decades ago, yet people still spend 300-5000 on high end headphones that don't sound much better than a 50 dollar pair.
WRONG: I've never heard a $50 pair of head phones that are anywhere as accurate as the Etymotic er6i which had an MSRP of $99. Unfortunately, I broke mine and Etymotic discontinued production. I found their newer offerings are to uncomfortable for extended use, so I switched to the Shure SE215-K, which also has an MSRP of $99. The SE215-Ks sound almost as good, but are far more durable, and like the ER-6is, no $50 headphone compares.

Use a document camera
I see a lot of people suggesting that you use a whiteboard and then use a digital camera to take pictures of the whiteboard. That might work as a low-budget solution, but if you have some money to spend and authorization to spend it, just get a document camera. You probably already have a digital projector in your meeting room. With a document camera, you can project anything on the screen. Many document cameras have built-in features for recording images or video, and you can also use it in conjunction with a lecture capture system if your meeting has remote participants or if you need to give an online presentation in that room.
Low-budget option: IPEVO Point 2 View USB Camera
Mid-budget option: Elmo MO-1 Visual Presenter

Why not get a document camera that can record still images to an SD card?
There are also document cameras that can record full-motion video. The model I've linked to is somewhat expensive but there are cheaper options available.

Re:clearly...
It's worse than that. Ingrid Newkirk (PETA's batshit founder) has explicitly stated the PETA does not advocate any animal 'right-to-life'. The ASPCA, HSUS, and PETA do little more than employ emotional blackmail to ransom millions of dollars from the public, where virtually none of that revenue is actually doled out to shelters. The policies they implore shelters to adopt succeed amazingly well in one way: shelters are the leading cause of death for healthy dogs and cats. Please do not give any of your money to any of those organizations. If you're tempted to, at least read this before doing so. You'll need a strong stomach to get through it, but it will reward you with the truth about how these so-called "rescue" organizations actively work against the welfare of animals. Nathan Winograd's site (above) is also a good source of information. Having been in the treacherous trenches as a volunteer at shelters and now running a feline rescue, I've seen first-hand what monsters the ASPCA and their ilk breathe into life.
-
So price is not an issue?
And if you want it, then surely you should agree that it is _worth_ paying for. You can't seriously argue that you want it but it's not worth money.
The problem is, that logic runs into pricing issues. Take this book for example. At the time I wrote this post, the new price was $218, the Kindle edition was $180, and used copies also sold for $180. I would be happy to pay for that book, but not $180, and certainly not $218. I might pay $30.
In reality, I'll pay nothing, since it's so expensive that I'll just have to rely on the library's copy.
Now you can argue that this is a special case since it's a limited run academic book, but the point is that when there is a gap between what someone is willing to pay, and the actual price of the item, you have a lost sale. With respect to physical goods, maybe that's a sale you don't want, since you'd have to take a loss. But with respect to copyrighted goods, in many cases any price is going to net you a profit.

Re:Ordered mine and got it yesterday
I will agree with you on that, if the nexus 7 2nd gen had a micro sd slot it would be the greatest tablet ever at this moment and no other tablets would even compare.
Google/Asus hit it out the ballpark with the 2nd gen nexus 7. They do make 1 piece OTG adapters though if you don't want to use an OTG cablehere is a 1 piece OTG adapter: http://amzn.com/B00BFYH11Q
it's 1 piece, gives you full usb access to add external drives, you can also use xbox 360 or ps3 controllers to play many games, the FPS is kinda fun now with my xbox controller.
but I do wish they would have added a sdcard slot, but I can deal with the OTG cable when I need to copy over stuff or whatnot.
most time though I don't need it since I can use ES File Manager and access all my shared hard drives on the lan and stream/copy files over and even install apk files over the lan. And use remote desktop apps to remote control my desktops and such so while I do miss the sdcard slot, it's not that big of a deal anymore since apps give you access to shared drives on lan, or otg cable or 1 piece otg adapters give you access to external usb devices.
you can also plug in a 1 piece micro sdcard to usb adapter if you wanted, but it's still good.
it is a nice piece of hardware, and im not really a fanboi, it's my first android device. my only other mobile device had been a newegg acer 400 dollar laptop bought 3 years ago and an old ipod touch 3rd gen.
but this new nexus 7 2nd gen is crazy and im kicking myself in the ass for not trying android sooner, it's sooooo much better than iOS on my ipod touch.

Re:MSRP of $62,400 Though?
The $16k car I bought included heated seats..
And I'm not arguing "if you can afford it", but the majority of people cannot, and when they look at their "needed $500/mo car expense" and then wonder why they are having trouble making ends meet, it's ridiculous.
I have heated seats in my car too. Cloth. GP says that heated leather seats are nice in the winter, but you know what is nicer? Heated cloth. I won't completely freeze your ass before the heating comes up to temperature. Cloth is better on a hot day too- just try sitting on a hot cloth seat with shorts and compare to a hot leather seat. I love the feeling of leather but it is only really best on medium-temperature days.
Sidenote- You can buy aftermarket seat heaters for $65/seat and put them in yourself. Or have a stereo guy put them in for maybe $300. Either way it is a better deal than the "cold weather package" which is usually $2-3000.
Completely unrelated- it is a bit frustrating that if you want a 5/6 speed on a non-luxury vehicle, you have to settle for the base model. The higher trim models of most non-luxury cars have no manual transmission option. -

The Manga Guide to Databases is the best introduction to (relational) databases I've come across. It provides an entertaining and thorough overview of database terminology and concepts. Re:Not a huge surprise...
The game is still available for sale on Amazon: http://amzn.com/B007VTVRFA
I'm not sure why people keep saying they took it down. Maybe they did, but it's there and available now and the ratings on it are still horrible.
Amazon did take it down for a few hours but they put it back up and added a notice to the page stating that EA was having server problems and was working to resolve them and that customers who purchase the game may be unable to play until those problems are resolved.
Now I see that Amazon has since removed that notice and replaced it with a note saying that owners of SimCity are entitled to a free game from EA.
