anoNet
Personally I like the concept of anoNet more and it's a bit more interesting too, as it allows all the usual software (browser, p2p software, http/irc server etc) to work.
anoNet is a decentralized friend-to-friend network built using VPNs and software BGP routers. anoNet works by making it difficult to learn the identities of others on the network allowing them to anonymously host content and IPv4 services.
It is impossible on the Internet to communicate with another host without knowing its IP address. Thus, the anoNet realizes that you will be known to your peer, along with the
/30 subnet used for communicating with them. A routing protocol, BGP, allows any node to advertise any routes they like, and this seemingly chaotic method is what provides users with anonymity. Once a node advertises a new route, it is hard for anyone else to determine if it is a route to another machine in another country via VPN, or just a dummy interface on that users machine. It's a fun thing to try out, since you can normally use mirc and browse on the anoNet sites that end in
.ano tld. There's web search engine, irc server, bittorrent tracker, private WoW server and probably other "real internet" stuff too.Activities
Please note that any resource listed in this section can only be reached when your connection to the VPN is active. If it is not, you will get unexpected results.
Once you have connected to the VPN itself, you may do any number of things:
To get the full anoNet experience, use one of our cache DNS servers (1.0.9.53 or 1.10.11.1) so that you can resolve anoNet domains! Getting your own domain such as example.ano is no problem, just ask!
- Visit our Wiki, wiki.ano (http://1.0.9.3).
- Visit our IRC network using 1.0.9.1 or 1.0.1.1 port 6667 (6697 for SSL) with your favourite IRC client. Join #anonet and we can help you get started with anoNet.
- If you would like a more secure form of communication, you can use our SILC server at silc.ano:706
- Visit our message forum talk.ano (http://1.0.9.4), where you can discuss anything under the sun! Literally. That is what this network is about -- free speech.
- Use the anoNet jabber network (jabber.ano port 5222 or 5223 ssl for v1 clients), where you can chat with others using your favourite Jabber client! Jabber directory at users.jabber.ano
- Grab yourself a webmail account mail.ano (http://1.0.9.6) if you don't want to run your own mail server. anoNet has no spam.
- Search anoNet using our spidering search engine search.ano (http://1.0.9.8).
- Use our Bittorrent tracker anotorrent.ano (http://1.0.9.200)
- There is an open Icecast streaming server at stream.icecast.ano (1.0.9.16) port 8000, password anonet. It supports 20 streams and 200 listeners. The directory server is at icecast.ano (http://1.0.9.16)
- Once again to promote free speech we have a multi-user blog at anojournal.ano (http://1.0.9.13)
- If file sharing is your thing we have ed2k and dc++ servers.
- If gaming is for you, there is a bnetd server. (Starcraft, Starcraft: Brood Wars, Warcraft II, Warcraft III, Diablo, Diablo II)
- We also have World of Warcraft server setup (Running MaNGOS and a combination of SDB and Modb)
Remember, you can be a server too! Do you want to play a multi-player game? Go ahead! Install a game server, advertise it around (if you like), and get people to play with you!
Not only can you be a game server, but you can offer files, stream media, host your own web page, or anything else you want!
There is far too much to the network to list here, if it sounds like something you would be interested in, then connect up.(main site seems to be down atm, but this one works)

Re:Meh - black servers have been around for years.
*cough* http://anonet.org/ *cough*.
Although it's self-contained, rather than a route to the "main" Internet. -

Re:My Vision
http://anonet.org/
Over all the other implementations of anonymizing networks that I've tried I like anonet the most. Basic idea is that you turn VPN on and the tap device does routing around the network. Everyone on the net is currently from 1.0.*.* or something like that range, and you can connect with them with those ip's. The traffic gets routed on the network. This implementation is also compatible with all existing programs (http, mirc, ftp, torrents work all great) and you can host websites too ( theres some listed on the site, like irc net on 1.1.1.1 , http://wiki.ano/ google variant for anonet http://search.ano/ etc )
You might like to try that, unlike with the other weird interfaces and not-too-comfy usage of anonymizing networks, anonet feels nice and interesting to use. It was like another internet over the real one, but anonymous. You can just normally set up apache httpd or ftpserver and bind it to the anonet ip, you dont need specialized software. They also give you *.ano domain if you just ask. -
Re:Yes
It wouldn't break anonet.org, because that's linked together using VPNs over the Int.... Aaaah.

Re:News in english about the trial:
I think it's time for darknets.
Hop on, baby. Although this one is about networking, rather than piracy.

You could always make another internet to get away from the bullshit on the current one. -
Re:Try it!
You can try it on a "dark net" first of all, if you like.
http://anonet.org/ has started rolling out v6 now.

Re:Obviously technologically superior
Come onto Anonet, and you can connect to the IRC server at dead:beef::1 (SSL preferred on 6697), and you'll find I've already got it

What about Anonet?
There's a project called Anonet that has developed a similar wrapper infrastructure.
Anonet is a "virtual Internet" that utilizes OpenVPN and Quagga to provide a layer of anonymity and deniability on top of the Internet. It uses a chaotic yet cooperative routing scheme which allows any one to use any IP address while still maintaining their existing Internet connection.
It has everything on it that the Internet does: torrent trackers, web servers, FTP servers, DNS infrastructure, PGP keyservers, IM, IRC, streaming audio, game severs, etc. All Internet-aware applications should work fine as Anonet is simply an addition to your operating system's routing table.

Re:But all decent pirating services...
Honestly, the best possible route is not this hack upon TCP or UDP (did you read the part about how it opens and closes connections while doing the handshake?), but rather an opt-in private network like anonet.

Re:Your Internet soul was sold years ago
What is needed is an anonymous network beyond the government watched Tor and simple proxifiers. A new network is needed. A few people have created an anonymous, deniable, virtual Internet using OpenVPN and Quagga. anoNet has all the luxuries of the Internet (http, ftp, IM, IRC, p2p, search, etc.). They also have full DNS and IP/AS registration to keep things sane. Unlike the Internet all registration is anonymous and private. This network is not a warez network at all, merely a group of people who want a different network, founded on privacy.

Re:well...
You shouldn't have to be treated like a criminal on the internet. This is why networks like anoNet (http://www.anonet.org/) exist, but with this treaty, Tor and other networks like it may be compromised. Fight against data retention, encrypt your communications, and even join an anonymous community. The Internet should be ours, not theirs.
-
Re:Psiphon looks good...
Just to add to your list: anoNet
Unlike the others you listed, anoNet is a full IP network built using standard OSS tools (OpenVPN and Quagga being the heart of the network).
It is far from a perfect at giving absolute anonymity at the software level, it requires you to use some common sense. On the plus side, *you* get to decide who you trust and how much you trust them. Like TOR, the more people that are a part of anoNet, the more anonymous the network becomes. Think of the network in terms of old school BBSs.
If you are looking to join a network and just find loads of warez/porn/etc. anoNet is probably not for you. There is nothing to stop someone from hosting a warez site, and inside the network you are pretty darn safe. The reason you won't just find a huge stash is the fact that the network was built by people that believe in their privacy / right to free speech above all else. We are a bunch of network admins / Unix admins / programmers. Obviously we have no reason to pirate software since *nix is our OS of choice.
anoNet is what we call a Democratic Anarchy. There is a nice page on our wiki (inside the network) on what that means, but it is way too much to define here. Bottom line there is no kiddie porn, there will be no kiddie porn and don't bother connecting if you want to debate how not allowing kiddie porn is censorship. We picked a line, that line was kiddie porn and we stick to it.
Windows users are more than welcome. Because there is no BGP implementation for Windows, Windows users can't "natively" be routers, they can get a static IP (or a whole subnet) however. We have a coLinux image that can get you up and running if you really wanted to be a router.
Lastly, we are willing to help you learn. I can't express that enough. If you want to learn about networking or any other aspect of the network, we are all willing to help if you are genuinely interested. If you just want to setup a node and be a part of the network, that is fine also.
Anyway, hope this post tickled the imaginations of at least a few people. If you decide to connect, use a pseudonym that you have never used anywhere else. -
Re:What's next? or who's next?
If they can do it for corporations, how long do you think it will be before they require ISPs to store all personal email?
Do yourselves a favor and become a part of anoNet now. -

Re:Why only countries?
well the obvious reason is that we cant really know about what what companies do what since there are alot of them with different rules in each country, the good part is just jump onto http://anonet.org and learn how to get around certain _road blocks_
:) unethical practices can also be met with unethical practices. FWIW if you live in Australia now you download the pRon at work!
win win
Shame on some of those countries, if only china would stop filtering, perhaps our efforts should be like spammers, create a lot of junk to the point it breaks the effectiveness of the spam filters.

anoland!
i dream of a place (probably in the Spratly Islands since its warm and unclaimed still) where nerds are free to rule, it'd be a place without badgering politics but it would also be an information haven without political agenda. everyone would have a fiber connection, live in teepee huts and have a quantum computer, that nations income will be solely based on IT as like isl of man is based on banking, think of it as Eureka of a free nation. but then again it doesn't have to be an island, we could hijack a cruise ship in international waters and keep it there creating our own 'sealand' for the masses, discuss the deteriation of free speach and write 'bush sucks' emails every day, and have a tradable currency based on experience for those out of anoland trips. remember, peace not war!
thats just my dream :( talk to me on anonet if interested, oh the part thats stopping me is the initial capital, i am open to suggestions or donations. -

Re:oblig
there are a number of ways you can prevent the chinese government or any other government from finding out who you are, using anonet is one way to make sure. its fast with full ip stack and anonymous and even connect to 3rd party services like tor - these people really do push the anonymity part along with technology, its not for everyone but it is an amazing group of people with a massive amount of information. the laws MII are putting into place are there to benifit only 2 areas: government for identifying people and corporations, and they leave these laws so undefined that pretty much anything will fall under it if they so say.

Re:Thats right,, the Fed suspects YOU!
these guys never give up do they? power hungry 13yr old kiddies on an IRCD competeing for an O-line, its pathetic. I dont think the taxpayer will be paying for the storage, the customer will be paying for the storage. i agree with your comment on the destruction of what used to be called the american way, look at what bush just signed, he rendered millions of lost lives worthless by people who were fighting for freedom, he wrecked hundreds of years worth of work on the government, and he now just imprisoned 300million americans! thats just fucked, i recon he's trying to leave his mark on the world, i see it as a huge scare for years to come.
thats why i stopped letting the government and isp cunts from collecting my information, now i only come on the SHInTernet to read slashdot and for work, all my personal stuff is done over anonet, sad, but its my only way of protesting as i am a paraplegic. -
Part of the solution...
Republicans or Democrats in office will not matter. The US has started down a road that has no end (at least not a pretty one).
So if you can't change them, change yourself. Come be part of the solution. -
Why stop at the obvious?
With a little time and paitence, most anyone can get an address if they have an IP. Why give them that chance?
anoNet gives you the opportunity to have as much anonymity as you want. It doesn't prevent someone from being a dumbass, but it does give that extra little bit to people that do want their privacy.
It is what the Internet was back before big brother stopped by.
Give it a chance, you may like it. -
Time to wake up...

on anonet ...
On anonet you can use what ever name you want.

Re:Does your university censor /. too?
this is why i use anonet, as long as they dont block vpns that is, even when i travel to china i can still connect, its an excellent resource tool also and great for setting up test network/projects and/or helping out people in less fortunate countries.
go out of their world and into ours.
p.s i hate how slashdot forces you to not use tor to post anonymous comments, so war drive or office hike to do it -
