Digital doesn't impress me. The stations that come in clearly over traditional analog broadcast are entirely in spanish. I don't speak spanish. In the US only poor people and hippies use "free" broadcast signals. And the programming on those channels reflects their target audience.

PBS (public television) is supported by donations, so their signal is really terrible (people don't donate the hundreds of thousands of dollars a week it takes to run a TV station). Upgrading to digital wouldn't help, because then they'd have to pay for that too.

I think we can draw similar lines along free Digital Radio. Who is going to listen to it? People who can afford CD, superCD or dvd-audio decks and music? People who can afford commecial free subsubscription service like XM, Sirius or others? No. People who can't afford a HD-Radio receiver in the first place are the main target. It simply does not make sense.

Me? I mostly listen to AM radio, so apparently digital doesn't mean much me to if I haven't even "upgraded" to FM. But AM is of suffienct quality to listen to talk radio (News, Weather, Limbaugh, Savage, NPR, Art Bell, Hannity, O'Reilly, etc).

What's the advantage for a business to run AM over FM? It's less costly to run an AM station(equipment and licesing). You can actually have a wider coverage area for less power. (FM has more consistent quality, but the signal drops off quickly. AM the quality degrades over the distance).

If I had mod points I would up this guy. This would be a perfect topic for Coast to Coast AM!

One of the funniest radio shows I have ever heard was about two years when Art recieves a caller who claims he's from the 23rd century. The caller goes on and describes what life is like all the new tech, stuff like that.

Then Art gets another caller and it's some dude who claims he's from the 24th century and he's calling Art to let him know that the guy from the 23rd century is full of shit. Then Art lets the guys talk to each other and keeps blanking out the arguement as one of them is obviously drunk and he can't resist liberaly sprinkling the broadcast with the infamous f-word in his description of the grey's take-over of Europe using mind-control devices.

The moral of this quick little story folks is that people in trailer parks come up with better Sci-Fi than the Sci-Fi channel.

With all those veiled Internet trolls to whom Art Bell &c. give a voice.
I hope they figure out who owns what before it touches down, too, or we'll end up with frivolous lawsuits aplenty over lunar property rights.

What NASA really needs is an Open Source Hyper Dimensional Model Space Craft. ;o)

As several other posters have pointed out, this guy is full of shit. He reminds me of the sort of people who call in to the Art Bell show.

If anything, my hearing has gotten better since I started listening to MP3s. I remember when I first started encoding my CDs, I couldn't tell the difference between 128kb CBR MP3s and the CD source. I can't even fathom how I was able to believe that; I encode everything with LAME's r3mix preset now.

Funny, I thought living by Area 51 and spying on the Air Force was the ticket to getting your status changed to "radio personality."

Of all the "personal flight" ideas out there, the Moller skycar seems to have the most potential. I heard the designer, Paul Moller, being interviewed on Coast to Coast AM recently, and was captivated. Looking at the design, it seems very "car-like," with no exposed rotor edges or wings; it basically looks like a car with small jet engines instead of wheels. During the interview, the designer made a big point of explaining the integral safety systems: each turbojet is actually two turbojets, so if one fails the other takes over; there are three separate computers on board (one primary, two backups), etc. It runs on regular gasoline, gets mileage comparable to a car (over 25mpg), is quiet (85dB @ 50 feet, and they're working to reduce it further), and most importantly, is a VTOL (vertical take off and landing) craft. They've been developing this for the last few decades (check their design history on the site) and are working with the FAA to obtain "powered lift" certification for the Skycar- on the interview I remember one of his points was that getting a license for the Skycar should be easier than getting a driver's license.

You mean about ten minutes of good music, MAX. It's been a long time since I bought a CD that had more than three songs on it that I like (I can think of two CDs released in the past two years that fit that bill).

And no, I'm not really boycotting the RIAA. There's just nothing good out, lately. I *am* boycotting BestBuy for their copy protection support. But I'm not dl'ing that much music, either. I'm listening to the stuff I've got, or, weird radio.

Here is an interesting story about Penn Jillette (of Penn and Teller) and his experiences with zero-g. It's pretty long, but it's detailed and amusing.

The plane they use in astronaut training (the "vomit comet") give you more than ten seconds of weightlessness. Here is another first person account, this time from a guy who rode one intended for the public.

It is my understanding that the passengers experience "weightlessness" on the up portion of their trip, as well as the down portion. I believe the pilots train in how to gun the engines, point the nose up, then cut them, and fly the plane on a parabola that keeps the occupants weightless for the longest period of time consistent with not crashing at the end.
