Re:They didn't take
This is just fucked-up enough to be believable. I think it's time to break out the guns and tanks. I'm storming the Whitehouse. Who's fucking with me?
-
They didn't take
into account the latest law passed by Congress. It could definitely have some impact on IP and free speech.

Court Denies Microsoft Request for Rehearing
Was it anything to do with this?

Maybe that's how they...
got Bill Gates to say that "Linux is the best OS ever."
-
Of course I love my Operating System!
I'm one of those Mac lovers!

Re:a very simple solution is available...
I work tech support for a certain OEM that people seem to enjoy berating. You wanna know why we don't just ship the PC without the O/S?
Cap'n Bucky doesn't have the slightest clue how to configure power management under windoze, and now you want him to INSTALL it?!?!?!?
Pure genius. Really, it is. If a user knows how to install an o/s, usually that's the first thing they do. Format the HDD and install Win98SE, W2K, or better yet Linux.
Just don't bitch at me when your 4-year old copy of Oracle doesn't work in Windows ME, like my favourite call from yesterday. -
Re:Didn't BBspot do a joke article about this?

offtopic, but sort of related?

Not depressed
It certainly wasn't depressing for this guy.

Crackdown on file sharing?
Crackdown on file sharing? That's an understatement - look what's happened to Napster !!!
--------------------- -
Looks like file sharers...
....are cracking down too. About time.

Re:AOL's paying off Retailers
There's a story on bbspot news that somes it up very nicely.
-
Ahh, what about feedback devices?
Really, what about the game providing physical punishment or feedback? The XBox will do just that.
-
A new level of mediocrity...
Seriously. AOL Desktops? I think they've got bigger fish to fry by remaining a content and access provider.

Microsoft Bundles Worm with IISBBspot has a great satire of a new bundled feature for IIS from Microsoft.
Take a look at Microsoft Bundles Worm with IIS!
Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day.

Yes we know.
And Microsoft is suing the government in response.

I know where the nukes went...

Equally important.
Is AOLs announcement of their new service plan. That could be very pivotal too.

Re:But I wanted a Pedabyte file server...
On the bright size, this machine just MIGHT have enough disk space to allow us to install the next release of Windows (after XP).
Nope....apparently M$ is predicting a 1 petabyte footprint for the next version of Windows.
On a sidenote, M$ has just announced it's new IIS freebies
---------------------------- -
Yes, I think we know the problem here! After a good, complete study we find two conclusions upon this problem:
1) It's Windoze after all! It sucks.
2) Moreso because of the hole in the back of the admin's head (hint hint!)
Now, for the first clause to be true, we have to assume that Windoze sucks. It does. So number one is true. The second clause is true because they are most likely MCSE certified.
Now all they need is a Moron processor for their machines. (For the paranoid, the URL is http://bbspot.com/News/2000/5/amd_moron.html) After all, a Moron and Windoze 2000 is a perfect combo.

Who cares?Who can stop to think about WebVan and other grocery delivery sites when my favorite sites are running out of cash?
But seriously I just read in the Economist how Tesco is teaming with Safeway to build a profitable grocery delivery service. It's based on picking the groceries out of existing stores and not expensive new warehouses. It's been very successful (profitable) in Britain. Unfortunately the article requires a paid online subscription to the magazine, but it shows there is hope.

You're thinking of...
the BBspot Slashdot Story Generator.
-
The government backed off because...
they remembered that Microsoft had filed a counter-suit against them (US Government).
Quidquid latine dictum sit, altum viditur. -

Could be...
...it's because they finally figured out the "Network is NOT the computer".

Re:Important Linux News
I would mod you up if you weren't blatantly rippin off this bbspot story.
Why is there no "-1, Ripoff?" -
Re:In other news ...
There already is a Slashdot Story Generator
-
You mean like this?

---------- -
I think it was...
download-proof albums like Metallica's Download This that really stymied Napster, and not the RIAA lawsuit.
-
There's still hope for spammers
Thanks to the US government.
Quidquid latine dictum sit, altum viditur. -
First admendment rights....
...but no souls. At least according to this article.
-
Maybe it was...
...this guy that made the decision not to use smart tags in Europe. There's gotta be at least one of them.

Wrong!
No, you guys are wrong...
Gates Says Linux Best OS Ever
-
He also said
That Linux was the beast OS ever. It's true, I read it on the Internet.
-
That's awesome.
Nice to see it trouncing IIS like that even if it is Red Hat. Maybe this webserver is the reason that Microsoft was so intent on delaying the kernel.
-
Whichever you choose...
...be sure it has the "palm" attachment. It definitely makes any PDA more accessible and will make you more productive.

Re:I'm in a unionI'm a Programmer/Network Specialist for a state government agency, and required to join a Union.
... I'm not a slaveYeah, that's exactly what I was thinking. You're not a slave? You're required to join a union, yet you're not a slave? What happens when:
* You decide to get married/have a kid/make a big purchase like a house, and you want to negotiate a raise?
* You decide that your health benefits don't cut it, and you'd like more?
* Your union decides to go on strike, and the company (God bless their souls -- the very company that's employing you, in your case it's the taxpayers) decides they don't like your demands. You'll get strike pay and be forced to not work. And you're not a slave ?
The union isn't a be-all end-all, but it serves a purpose
I'd like to know EXACTLY what purpuse you feel it serves. I think we at Slashdot could all use an education. Apparently, I'm missing the boat here -- after all you're getting a higher purpose for only $30 a month.
Unless you are a "superstar" who sacrifices his social life to keep completely up-to-date on the hottest tech fads, it is impossible to negotiate a good deal with a large corporation or government agency.
Apparently, you've been paying way too much attention to that propaganda they've been sending you. I'm a 26 year old. I'm married, and I have 2 beautiful kids. I've been in the 'building good software' business for 8 years. I didn't graduate from college, and I ain't no 'superstar' as you put it. Apparently, I was put on this earth to prove you wrong... just to be the 'monkey in the wrench' as it were... because I've earned every penny through hard work, sweat, and determination. I didn't have anyone negotiate for me, and nobody told me what to do. After all, isn't that what this country was founded on?
-
I'm glad that was resolved...
I had been losing sleep over it for days. However, I'm more worried about Microsoft getting control of all the
.NET domain names. -
Could it be......that there are just too many Linux distributions to support? That really might be the problem.
But seriously I don't think they will be missed too much.
-
Who runs that one?
Who bothers with RC5 anymore? All my systems are busy cranking away at calculating the number of bugs in Windows 2000 with the W2KB client.
-
Re:One big monitor
It's the Ford Excursion of monitors; a pixel-guzzling sport-utility-display.
Or maybe the Ford Exorbitant. -
Could work...
...but I don't think it would help any of these ad campaigns.
-
In another ruling...
The court reversed its decision on the Florida recount. Saying it was just joking.
-
Why do that?
Why bother taking pictures of space, or trying to rocket into space? I prefer creating rifts in the space-time continuum. That's much more fun.

Re:Hear Hear
Yah! It'll be even better coupled with their newest technological breakthrough! I can't wait to do some real fragging!
---------------------------- -
Very powerful indeed.
And trying to increase their power by contending that the US government is a monopoly. I'm not sure who I'd root for in that lawsuit.

Re:That puts a bit of a nasty spin on it!
Here is what your comment would look like with the new SmartTag technology turned on in IE with Microsoft conveniently adding their own links.
--------
Yeah, I'll get modded down into obilivion for having the stones to post thism but...
Wow, that's one of the worst pieces of FUD I've seen posted on Slashdot so far! The SmartTags are just something that allows Content Provider A to neatly package something for syndication. So, for example, Content Provider A gives stock quotes. The SmartTags feature just makes it easy for Web Site Operator B, if he's running IIS/ASP or whatever, to easily insert a stock quote from A's site. That's all.
The comment you posted makes it sound like Microsoft is going to be taking over everybody's website. Using the SmartTags requires an actual effort on the part of the webmaster; Microsoft (or any other content provider -- anyone can make Smart Tags easily) will not suddenly have editorial control over every website in the world.
You guys need to chill out. Everything that Microsoft does is not necessarily automatically evil. -
Absolutely security
