Wait a minute....
I watched the Super Friends growing up, I know how this ends! Marvin and Wendy had to foil a plot from a guy named "King Plasto" who used stuff just like this in his evil attempt to take over the world. Someone call the Great Hall Of The Justice League and get Batman and Aquaman on this, stat!
To think I can remember that bad episode of a bad cartoon from the 70's, yet forgot my Dad's birthday this year. Again.
Sigh.

NBC Universal animation
the trade does leave NBC without a first-string cartoon character
Bull. NBC Universal still has plenty of cartoon characters.

Re:Freakazoid says you are wrong
In the Conversational Norwegian short of Freakazoid, we learn that "narkval" is Norwegian for narwhale.
"Lykkkelig liten narkval" -> Happy little narwhale
Then again, the OED lists it as "narwhal"... but who is /. going to believe? -
Re:Human / Animal Hybrids?
I was thinking that they could finally make a live-action movie of the original Mighty Hercules, without cheesy CGI or claymation for Newton and Toot.

Yeah I remember that one.

Re:Seriously, though...
The Term "Smell-O-Vision" came before the 50s, it came in the 1944 Bugs Bunny Short "The Old Grey Hare" where An old, wrinkled Fudd picks up a newspaper and it reads "Smell-O-Vision Replaces Television."

Re:If he's got plasma...
Google prevails... Crazy Mixed-up Pup. Looks like it was released by Universal, but I don't recall what other characters they had control over... It was directed by Tex Avery, so it might have gotten shown with Tom & Jerry or Woody Woodpecker, perhaps.

Even the simple ones have too many features
When my cell phone plan came up for renewal a few months ago, I intentionally bypassed all of the color, camera, extraneously feature-rich models for one of the few remaining black-and-white models, an LG VX10, for just the reasons suggested: I want a phone, period.
But even this simple model comes with feature overkill: try as you may, you can't make it silent. Even with every single sound option disabled or set to buzz, it still plays a silly tune during shutdown, precisely when I've discovered I've entered a quiet zone like a theatre and want to turn it off!
Guilty disclaimer: But I'd pay money for a ring tone of Elmer Fudd saying "Wiiiing!", as in "Yes opawaitah, it went Wiiiing!"

Re:It couldn't be that bad.
These HAVE to be better then some of the other SW made for TV films/cartoons, ie: Ewoks, The TWO Ewok movies, and the great SW Holiday Special. I can't forget the cartoon Droids. I have a VHS copy of the SW Holiday Special and the best thing about it is the commercials from the 70s! Oh it also has the first appearance of Bobba Fett Cartoon in the middle of the special!

Re:What about IP inheritence trees?
The first six animated cartoons that Walt Disney were public-domain fairytales such as "Little Red Riding-Hood" and "Puss in Boots". [Note that if life+70 copyright terms had been in place in 1922, these stories would not have been public-domain and Walt could not have legally used them.]. They weren't much of a success, and his "Laugh-O-Gram" animation studio went bankrupt at the end of the year.
Next, he did a pair of dental-hygiene films for a local dentist. (woo...)
His first real success was "Alice's Wonderland", featuring a live actress plus animated cartoon characters. [ Again, note that under modern copyright law, Lewis Carroll would've held copyright to the Alice stories until 1968, too late for Walt to ever use them. ] He produced 60 more "Alice" comedies by 1927.
Next, he produced a series of 26 "Oswald the Lucky Rabbit" cartoons. Ironically, he lost the copyrights to Oswald, and so was forced to change him to "Mortimer Mouse", then "Mickey Mouse".

Re:It was Wile E Coyote
No, it was not Wile E Coyote. Good try though. It was actually a cartoon released in theatres in 1955 called "The Hole Idea" where Calvin Q. Calculus invents a portable hole that comes in liquid form (easy to squirt onto wall) that gets stolen by a criminal Link . I remember watching it a while back. At the end his nagging wife drops down to hell through the last hole, IIRC.

Homes of the future of the pastHere's a thought: what happens with the pets? My cat roams around the house all day and all night, jumping up on counters, bookshelves, couches, etc. I foresee Mulder triggering automatic settings, accidentally turning the stereo on, then racing to the other end of the house, terrified at the noise.
Doesn't anyone remember DOG GONE MODERN, the Warner Brothers' cartoon where two dogs wander into the "Home of Tomorrow"?
Morover, if there's a biometic lock on the door, what kinds of easter eggs might the DoJ require in order to "combat terrorism"? Perhaps the doors automatically lock if anyone with an arrest warrant is detected on the premises? Chemical sensors alert the police if marijuana smoke is detected? Your health insurance provider is alerted if tobacco smoke is detected? If too much fatty food is prepared in the kitchen, another alert goes to your health insurance provider?
And here'a a thought about MS Toilet(tm): what's to stop them from building in a urinalysis kit and reporting the results to your employer, the police, or whoever else is interested? "Hi Bob, this is Fred at State Farm. I notice that since your 15-year-old daughter became pregnant, you've started drinking a lot. Now, I realize this is a trying time for you, but we're going to have to raise your rates in order to offset the added risk. By the way, we notice that your son has been flushing a lot of condoms in the past month, but we aren't detecting any estrogen in the urine passed around those flushes. Also, we detected several different DNA matches on the semen in those condoms. Would you like to see a list?"

This was ridiculed in 1905: "Pigs is pigs"Ellis Parker Butler wrote the story "Pigs is pigs" in 1905 about the government trying to tax two guinea pigs as "pigs" rather than pets. The guinea pigs, housed in the railway station until the issue is resolved by the government, reproduce at a geometric rate overwhelming the station.
Disney made a marvelous little cartoon of the story in 1954.

Re:EVER?!
Well, not "ever" as it currently stands, but because they've extended the copyright several times in the past century to the point that it's pretty much beyond our lifetimes, and the Court has now said that such machinations are legal, we can expect never to see copyrights expire again.
Assumptively, the Supreme Court said "It's not unconstitutional for such a law to pass, and if you don't like it, go pass a different law." Which is entirely correct, we could always have legislation in the future to reverse this.... but don't hold your copy of Steamboat Willy at the duplicator anytime soon. -
Re:Legal Issues?I'm not an expert, but I vaguely remember reading that when Tolkien sold the film rights to LotR, he specifically prohibited any 'based on'-type works (thus thankfully preventing a Middle-Earth sitcom).
Damn. There goes my idea for a Justice Friends-type show about Gimli and Legolas settling down into an apartment in Bree...

Re:New Shows? Why bother?
I have done a little digging and found the following link which gives a "complete" Reboot show listing:
here
I agree Reboot was excellent and its a shame I never got to see more than two series over here either. -
The Animated TintinI know Nelvana used to have a animated version of Tintin (pick it from the pull down) that ran in both english and french up here in Canada. If Nelvana sounds familiar to you, it's probably because they also do Magic School Bus, Franklin, and any other number of kid cartoons you've seen.
It was where I was first introduced to him, and, had I not checked out a few of the original graphic novels by Herge, I wouldn't have even known that Snowy was supposed to 'talk'. He was just animated as a rather intuitive dog, much like Brain on Inspector Gadget, less the intuitive hand gestures and knack for disguises. If I remember correctly, the animation was pretty true to the original artwork.
There's an episode breakdown for you here, for those of you who are interested. It is Ten years old, but it still runs occasionally on the weekends (up here on YTV)

Mice not owned by DisneyCo
I mean, [doesn't the Walt Disney Company] own anything to do with mice in cartoons?
Actually, Disney doesn't own every animated rat:
- "Stuart Little". No wait, that was live/CG.
- "Speedy Gonzales", which AOL has forcibly removed from airwaves by refusing to air it and refusing to license it to other cable channels.
- "An American Tail".
- "Tom and Jerry".
- "The Itchy and Scratchy Show".
- "Merrie Melodies: From Hand To Mouse" (read more).
- Several "Merrie Melodies"/"Looney Tunes" shorts had Sylvester fight a baby kangaroo named Hippety Hopper, whose sidekick was a mouse.

Re:I was taught the same thing in grade school...
What, did you never see the episode where "Duck Dodgers In The 24 and 1/2th Century" went to Planet X?
He went there to collect Aludium Fozdex for shaving cream, as Earth's supply had run out.
Google has many links, but try this one on for size.

Re:Censorship vs. DRM? Hardly!
BTW, it's not censorship if the unedited version is as easily or more easily available. If it's censorship you want to stop, there are lots of movies that aren't available for purchase/viewing at all or are only available in edited format. They're from the early 20th century or during WWII and contain what are now considered improper political and racial stereotypes. What? It's not censorship if you happen to agree with it?
I do disagree with it. I belive that any racism or stereotyping should stand, AS IT IS, as a window into a cruder era. Maybe there should be a warning (like the MA warning for language, sex, etc. - now for offensive characterizations). Consider all the classic cartoons that will NEVER see the light of day, because they had nasty portrayals of Japanese (as in Bugs Bunny Nip the Nips, or scenes where characters were in blackface. Offensive? Yes. And people should be aware that there was offensive content at one point in our history, and be able to see for themselves how Blacks, Asians, Hispanics, Jews, etc. were treated in America, and STILL ARE in some places. -
Re:Showtime? UPN?
I'm still extatic they cancelled The Secret Life of Desmond Pfeiffer. Made an excellent, obscure reference for another short lived show, Clerks: The Animated Series. With Farscape and Battlebots gone, all they have to do is get rid of Junkyard Wars, Monk, Stargate SG-1, and most of Cartoon Network's Adult Swim, and I'm getting rid of cable... Oh, and by the way. So no more Farscape, and SG-1 is wrapping up in a year, maybe two... So I guess Sci-Fi channels whole flagship "Sci-Friday" is just going to be what? The Dead Zone? Maybe they can bring back that really crappy Twilight Zone rip-off they used to have before Dead Zone... Grrr... Nevermind me, I'm still pissed from when Sci-Fi canned Mystery Science Theater 3000.
