Re:Go ALL THE WAY OUT!
Sonic.net is doing a fraction of a city per year, and only the neighborhoods with telephone poles. That leaves out huge swaths of the population, especially in Sonoma County's younger cities where poles were only placed along the main thoroughfares like South McDowell in Petaluma.

Re:Only Microsoft?
heck Yahoo and Bing still don't use SSL for search
Out of curiosity I just went and tried it. Not only do they not use SSL by default, but you can't use SSL at all for searches on either site. Yahoo will serve the home page via HTTPS, but trying to search from it gives you first a big error message from your browser due to a certificate name mismatch, and if you click through that you get a 403. If you try to go to http://www.bing.com/ you get a blank page.
I didn't try either site while logged in, so it's possible that you can do secure searches if you have an account.
My understanding with Google was that it was always SSL for all logged-in searches, but that logged-out users could still use via HTTP. At some point that appears to have changed, because signed in or signed out, regardless of browser, any attempt to go to google.com via HTTP gets redirected to HTTPS. If you construct a query like http://www.google.com/search?q=foo you can force Google to receive your query terms over HTTP, but it still immediately redirects to HTTPS rather than returning any data. I suppose if you used a browser that indicated it could not handle HTTPS, Google would probably allow you to do searches over HTTP.

VERY Pervasive!
The bubble is extraordinarily pervasive and it is VERY difficult to break out of without a geographic change(Proxy/VPN).
Try your search with the following URLs and see what you get:
www.google.com
www.google.co.uk
www.bing.com
www.duckduckgo.comI never log in to Google, always clear cookies and cache and generally try to avoid being tracked. I know that it's pointless because they still use geolocation, IP address, and browser signatures to track me. But I still try to avoid the bubble. Searching for BP gives me company/stock/investment information only! On all of the above search engines. But, searching BP from my hippie sister-in-law's house(on my own device) gives me a first page full of oil spill links.
It's REALLY startling when I travel overseas. Working remotely, I try searching for my "usual stuff", that's always right there at the top of the page. But, at the Caribbean resort, all I get is links to Philippine and Malay centric stuff and not at all what I'm looking for. It has been literally impossible for me to Google certain things that I normally do back home, even with very explicit search terms including location. It's been very annoying sometimes, but it drives home that I'm inside a bubble. It is not at all unlike being inside the Matrix and unable to wake up. You're not even aware that you're inside the bubble/Matrix.

Re:Anti-Trust
I don't see this monopoly (virtual or otherwise) in search that you are talking about. Care to provide examples?
In that case, allow me.
This is just a small sample of how wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong and hella wrong you are. That list is far from complete, and is mostly USA-centric. In other countries, not only are there more search providers, but Google does not even rank in the top lists. Or just look at China, where Google is made fun of similar to AOL is in the US today.
If that is what you label a monopoly, I really want to know what you call companies like Microsoft regarding desktop operating systems - or the phone company - or patents/copyrights for that matter.

Re:Disappointing
I've been using Bing for the last two years, but in the last couple of months it has gone completely to shit. For example, a Bing search for 'virusoid' finds only twenty pages, and manages to miss the Wikipedia page. I could do better with a search engine running on my PC.
Google sucks too, but differently. Its fuzzy matching tends to spunk up a ton of irrelevant social media nonsense.
I need an alternative.

The funny thing is
From the headline alone, before I even read the first sentence, I knew this had to be about England.
Only in England, it seems, do stories about people actually driving down cowpaths, fording rivers, and (apparently) crossing runways "because the GPS said so" originate.
(That said, I know of one airport in the US where the end of the runway intersects with the main road. There are signs in each direction advising drivers to yield to aircraft.)

Discovery; bundling
Sorry, but if it's not directly built in as a user accessable option, then who cares if the hooks are there.
There is a user-accessible option to open Internet Explorer, type windows 8 classic shell into the Bing search box (which produces this SERP), and click the first result. Or is your complaint that Microsoft provides no means to discover that such a classic shell exists in the first place? If that's true, then the same is true of obscure registry settings that do exist in Windows, and it's true of the existence of web browsers other than IE.
Speaking of IE, Microsoft got in trouble with competition law for including things with Windows. I'm guessing this is why Microsoft declined to ship MSE bundled with Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 so as not to be perceived as using its Windows market power to gain antivirus market power.

Re:Seems obvious
Because they are not just looking at the metadata of what you search on the internet, they are looking at the content of those searches.
That *is* metadata as they were referring to it. They don't analyze data, only text or other easily electronically scanable data in the headers of http requests. In headers of emails. In connection data for skype or whatnot. They refer to it as "metadata". You know,
http://www.bing.com/search?q=what+is+wrong+with+you%3F&form=MOZSBR
That is metadata. The URL GET request. It contains everything you need or they care about. METADATA is more important than trying to listen to people's pointless conversations.

Re:F. U. D.
Microsoft wants you to think that Google is an evil oppressor that takes money out of your pocket by selling data on your behavior.
Bing gives you a cut of the advertising revenue they get when you search. Google makes far more on your searches than Microsoft, but they don't give you anything.
So quite literally Google is taking money out of your pocket by taking your portion of the revenue they got from selling your data for you.

Re:The difference between all three
Microsoft has a service like Google Analytics, it just happens that no one uses it:
http://www.bing.com/toolbox/webmaster
Microsoft does keep track of email correspondence, see the link I posted earlier in the thread.
I know that Google data-mines me to provide me free services. But they're not giving my data to anyone else. I'll gladly deal with seeing ads to get free services that I like. If you don't like that arrangement, then no one forces you to use their services. But you won't find a web services provider that doesn't data-mine you.

Re:I agree with point, but the Foveon works...
The Foveon has always been inferior in resolution overall photosite-for-photosite, superior only is a small subset of color combinations
The "small subset" is any photographic subject with blue or red. Like fall leaves, anything with detail against a sky, red or blue fabrics with fine detail, etc.
That sure is a "small subset".
it has been, in fact, a dismal technology in terms of high ISO
In the past possibly. The current cameras handle ISO up to ISO 1600 well in color, up to ISO 6400 in B&W.
An ISO 6400 example.
Anyone who would rate this as informative has never studied this topic nor understands what the D800 is.
From your very link:
"But, as I wrote, this is the stuff of web forum fights, not something that serious photographers really spend that much time fussing about."
And the D800e I understand quite well, having shot it before. It has no AA filter which makes it somewhat sharper but also gives you some "nice" color moire (especially in fabric). You plainly don't understand the camera too well yourself if you don't understand this tradeoff that Bayer sensor cameras have to make.
The most interesting criticisms of their DP2 review are color problems.
Not really since it has more accurate colors than most other cameras, and more importantly consistent colors within any given scene. No camera will give you accurate colors 100% of the time
But if you can edit the image or apply a custom white balance and have all of the colors be relatively accurate, then you are better off.
Foveon draws from a small subset of lenses, a small selection of inferior bodies, and poor software support which is a critical handicap.
And from this it's easy to discern you are just one of the small cadre of ignorant Fovoen haters, since we are talking about a camera with a fixed lens (that exceeds Leica in quality BTW) so pretty obviously the lens selection is irrelevant.
I'll let you have the last word, since I have properly debunked your ignorance and shown people just how little you really know about an area you pretend to understand.

Re:And it still looks likeYes, you are correct, as I already said. To quote myself:
Grammar is about the syntax and structure, not about the definition of the word.
I assume that you think that "syntax" means "definitions of the words", based on your reply, but if you look at the definition of the word syntax, you will see otherwise. Syntax is about the arrangement and interactions of words, not about the meanings of them.

Re:Blocked access to Google and Yahoo, but not Bin
[O]f the three search engines only Google will actually use SSL, even if you go to http://google.com/ the form is submitted over https. The other two not only won't do that, they will *downgrade* you to http even if you explicitly navigate to https://yahoo.com/ or https://bing.com/. Iranians can easily use DPI to spy on Yahoo and Bing users, only Google presents a problem. So I'm not surprised Bing didn't get blocked, it's not clear to me why Yahoo did.
https://duckduckgo.com/ and https://ixquick.com/ both support SSL/TLS. The latter allows viewing searched content through their embedded HTTPS proxy service.

Blocked access to Google and Yahoo, but not Bing?
This seems inconsistent.
So, of the three search engines only Google will actually use SSL, even if you go to http://google.com/ the form is submitted over https.
The only explanation i see is that Iranian gov't is stupid - DPI is too hard, let's hijack the domains or blackhole a couple AS and go shopping (or shooting, or praying to almighty allah, or whatever). As to why Bing was left out, it's either
a) Iranian gov't is stupid, they were just unaware of Bing's existence. Unlikely.
b) Bing just doesn't work well enough in Arabic for the gov't to care. Also unlikely, given that Yahoo is powered by Bing and it got banned.
c) they contacted Microsoft and reached some kind of a deal where Microsoft bends over backwards but doesn't get banned. getting caught dealing with Iranian gov't is a big risk for Microsoft, but the potential reward of being the only game in a not-so-small country of 75 million people (mostly young and active adults) is just too high.hmm...

No - YOU be realistic (vs. documented facts)
"Let's be realistic here with your last comment. Running Windows is frankly asking for it." - by Anonymous Coward on Saturday February 16, @06:24AM (#42920905)
WTF? The ONLY reason, say, Linux isn't as 'exploited', is because it's NOT used as much - FACT!
Basically - THIS is a solid rule:
What's MOST USED, will be MOST EXPLOITED on ANY given computing platform - on smartphones, since Android "rules" there, displacing Apple's iOS in terms of most used worldwide, PROVES it... if you don't agree? "Argue with the numbers"... good luck!
See, & IF you *think* about it, especially from a 'criminal point-of-view' in their motivations (which is MONEY &/or INFORMATION nowadays)? It makes TOTAL sense (from their perspective, which is "dollar$ & cent$").
They're NO different than pickpockets targetting crowds, where 1 shotgun blast takes out a LOT of folks, instead of targetting only 1 individual...
E.G.-> Pickpockets frequent & operate in crowded streets, malls, bus & train stations come to mind as the throughfares they exploit, where MORE folks are to target... think about it, & "channel your inner criminal" (since it's the ONLY way to outfox an opponent of THAT nature, you have to THINK as they do & understand their motivations by looking @ their modus operandi - & criminals, are CRIMINALS, online or offline...).
Anyhow/anyways:
So - What proves that statement FOR me?
Easy - Android does!
(AND, yes, it IS a Linux variant since it uses a Linux kernel)...
In fact - See my p.s. below on THAT note too, since Linux has around a 50/50 split with Windows machines on servers worldwide too (some of the documented stuff from the past 2++ yrs. now proves that much for me again, too). Where Linux gets used more, it gets attacked, no questions asked. Same with MacOS X - hence, why Apple cut the crap on the "we don't get viruses" on TV, & changed it to "pc viruses" but they have their share now too since their marketshare/userbase went up (due to outright lies & bullshit marketers used above, pure "1/2 truths galore", nothing less!).
"Oh yeah, almost forgot, you better install anti-malware, anti-spyware, and anti-virus too. Oh, and don't forget to patch those too. Yeah, just tell the user to come back in another hour or two. It might be ready by then." - by Anonymous Coward on Saturday February 16, @06:24AM (#42920905)
No, you're not TRULY "ready", until you "security-harden" your Windows setup, thus (by "yours truly" & I wrote the VERY 1st GUIDE for truly securing Windows, since 1997 online, owards - this is its final evolution from 2008) -> http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&tbo=d&output=search&sclient=psy-ab&q=%22HOW+TO+SECURE+Windows+2000/XP%22&btnG=Submit&gbv=1&sei=G3IfUcekOefG0AHihoHgCA
(Same goes for Linux/SeLinux in its defaults, or MacOS X either - CIS tool works for Linux as it does for Windows and SHOWS YOU THAT MUCH in fact, & in a fun to use tool no less, almost like doing a benchmark for speed, albeit instead, for BETTER security, especially online + MacOS X has guides for doing it BETTER than it ships by default too, straight from Apple no less!).

You failed vs. my DNS inefficiency points... apk
You don't disprove or dispute them -> http://it.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3417867&cid=42736287 fully or even EFFECTIVELY (this may not be YOUR fault due to less know-how, since guys like me DO build what you merely 'use', user)... but then again: YOU limited yourself, not I!
PLUS:
Do the math on 2++ million records in a hosts with my fav sites I only keep 20 favorites in a custom hosts file cached in RAM for speed with those favs @ the top, beating DNS indexing or even btree seeks too... do the math!
(Plus the VERY thing that cures this is hardcoding in hosts files, as to the issue in this article, by BYPASSING THE NEED TO CALL OUT TO THESE UNPATCHED MAJORITY OF VULNERABLE DNS SERVERS OUT THERE! Period!)
Plus, again a fact per that math I outlined:
I resolve FASTER locally from disk than remote DNS servers do, especially if NXDOMAIN happens!
(Especially how I load it from a TRUE SSD based on DDR2 ram, the gigabyte IRAM by redirecting my hosts file sort of like how *NIX etc shadow passwords work in fact), once loaded thus (faster, zero seek access almost) & cached into RAM (1 of 2 ways I noted, 1 of which I use to overcome the limited faulty DNS clientside cache service in Windows with no less)).
I merely state facts that mathematics prove & yes, again, computers DO use that type of math in code and hardware too...

I shit on guys like you, everyday, because you LIMITED YOURSELVES, not I, by only being that - I've been brought into corporate Fortune 100/500 for consultation or on the job vs. contractors trying to take payroll away from my staff to SHOOT YOU DOWN on grounds like these (I am VERY good @ it & this post shows it also)... & by the way?
I'm a VERY proficient security pro & admin myself - I wrote THE VERY FIRST SECURITY GUIDE FOR WINDOWS:

Pertinent quote/excerpt:
---
"The compromised website is still the most effective attack vector for hackers to install malware on your computer with 47.6 percent of all malware installs occurring in that manner, says security firm AVG.
Another 10.6 percent are tricked into downloading exploit code -- many times, without their knowledge -- by clicking on links on pages to sites hosting malware...
It also found that faked pharmacy sites are a popular attack method, seen in about 10.4 percent of all attacks.
Fake antivirus scanners remain a popular malware injection method at 8.4 percent"
---
* Fact is, what I noted, in compromised sites, comprises 77% of malware installations - not what users download & install themselves (ala shareware/freeware sites like download.com etc./et al)...
APK
P.S.=> That's the TOUGH part - the 'driveby download attack' in maliciously scripted sites, bad links to sites, etc.-et al, & why I built this app:
---
APK Hosts File Engine 5.0++ 32/64-bit:
---
It speeds you up, makes you surf more reliably, but mostly more SAFELY (you can't get burned by what you can't touch)...
It works, to STOP USERS from 'hitting' or rather, being HIT, on known maliciously scripted hosts-domains/servers/sites... & it's updated every 15 minutes here in a 'special build' I use, but users can do it every 12 hours on THEIR end using it.
The rest of what I do?
"Std. layered security/defense-in-depth" ala these guides I've done online since 1997-2008 for Windows users -> http://www.bing.com/search?q=%22HOW+TO+SECURE+Windows+2000%2FXP%22&go=&form=QBRE
HOWEVER: What I personally find VERY EFFECTIVE vs. the 'driveby attack' on sites with malicious code or bogus bad links? In COMBINATION with blocking I do in custom hosts files noted above??
Opera & it's "By Site Preferences"... how so?? Ok:
By ONLY allowing scripting, cookies, plugins, frames/iframes, javascript, java, etc. on SOME sites only that REQUIRE THEM FOR FULL FUNCTION!
The rest are in global policy, disallowing their usage (lessening the chance of attack since those items are OFTEN exploited, massively)...

"The problem comes down to who does the vetting and testing of an application to add it to a whitelist? If it is the user, they've proven they can't be trusted because they'll "vet" any new screensaver/antivirus/cursor application that comes along." - by iamgnat (1015755) on Monday January 07, @12:36PM (#42506753)
See above again - in corporate environs, where THE MACHINE IS NOT THE USERS but the companies? That'd be the network admins doing the testing (hopefully).

"There is no simple single solution to the problem of security. A real solution by nature needs to be multilayered which means there is some complexity and ultimately users have to take responsibility for their actions." - by iamgnat (1015755) on Monday January 07, @12:36PM (#42506753)

Did I state it DIDN'T?
No... in fact, I stated it COSTS, big http://tech.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3339513&cid=42390907 AND, I pointed out the companies (huge money makers) doing it successfully!
There's probably others, those are my 2 "prime examples thereof" is all... AND?
NOTE - I also posted OTHER METHODS too (for Windows users though)...
Methods that do NOT require 'huge bandwidth' & OC12 pipes to do it (ala the registry hack settings mitigations recommend by Microsoft for TCP/IP stack hardening).
Your point??
I appreciate your information, but - I find your tone to be one that's attempting to "condescend" to me, while you overlook ALL/EACH of my points!
Ok, but... I am WELL aware of how it works - since I have been fighting vs. crooks online for more than a decade now, actively (unlike MOST others, mere "armchair QB's" & critics galore but not much on being 'chefs') - see below.
So, yes - I KNOW HOW IT ALL WORKS & how the pricks that abuse people, companies, & nations work...
Plus - I am out there DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT - actively now, & for YEARS before it, just like my parent post here was intended to be, because the methods work... see below too, I don't like stating things without some proof of my words (unlike the trolls I have smoked here today).

I wasn't even talking about Crowder. I even agree that unions are necessary in many instances. You are proving my point about having blinders on when it comes to something you believe in. For just one example since you seem incapable of using Google (or Bing or DuckDuckGo) here is a raw feed of them tearing down a tent with people inside. I cannot abide people who throw around the word tolerance and then show none. It is apparent you do not wish to discuss this but to simply tell me I am wrong. You cite examples of violence and then justify them.

"I recently, months ago when you finally got this guide done, had authorization to try this on simple work station for kids. AND
"Its 2009 - still trouble free! I was told last week by a co worker who does active directory administration, and he said I was doing overkill. I told him yes, but I just eliminated the half life in windows that you usually get. He said good point. So from 2008 till 2009. No speed decreases, its been to a lan party, moved around in a move, and it still NEVER has had the OS reinstalled besides the fact I imaged the drive over in 2008. Great stuff! My client STILL Hasn't called me back in regards to that one machine to get it locked down for the kid. I am glad it worked and I am sure her wallet is appreciated too now that it works. Speaking of which, I need to call her to see if I can get some leads. APK - I will say it again, the guide is FANTASTIC! Its made my PC experience much easier. Sandboxing was great. Getti

At least YOU have some sense

It'd be hard not to! Per my subject-line above? You have a sensible outlook @ least. That's the "thing" that has bugged me on THIS particular website to NO END: "FUD"...
I don't "hate Linux" either!
In fact - I rather LIKE it, especially KDE bearing distros, like KUbuntu...
I just didn't like how Mr. Shuttleworth & Canonical are "running" from RMS' statement regarding LOCAL DISK-BOUND QUERIES GOING OUT TO REMOTE SERVERS OF THEIRS!
That's like putting a surveillance camera into our homes essentially & I see RMS' point...
Additionally - I wasn't 'crazy about' how the "pr flaks" from Canonical are using "std. pr flak technique #101" of *trying* to "cut down" RMS rather than disprove his points:
---
PERTINENT QUOTE/EXCERPT:
"Instead of addressing the queries raised by Stallman http://linux.slashdot.org/story/12/12/07/1527225/rms-speaks-out-against-ubuntu [slashdot.org] and the EFF, Canonical is now pushing for making Ubuntu a shopping cart"
---
(Sure - Many folks consider RMS a bit odd by THEIR standards, but then again, who isn't? We're all "weird" to one another - we're NOT THE SAME in all things is why, thank goodness... however, his personal habits etc./et al are NOT in question here. His findings are... & we SEE the results!))

"Hosting applications on Linux does not make them ecure." - by cmdr_tofu (826352) on Sunday December 16, @10:00AM (#42306999) Homepage
True, and you're correct below also... it's the SAME on any given platform in computing really!
These companies... were I they? (MS, Apple, Linux distros galore)?
I'd send out MY OS totally "secured"/"security-hardened" & I MEAN any & ALL ways in or out, shutoff...
(Then, I'd tell the user - "You open this, this can happen, but you assume responsibility doing so").
Yes, it IS doable (SeLinux, Windows multiple methods & layers for "layered-security"/"defense-in-depth" etc./et al). Just takes time, & effort, as you stated. Worth it? Yes. Absolutely.

Re:Islamic porn
I posted this image search link in another post hereabouts. Note how most official pictures, as well those from higher-profile events (e.g. Iranian female sportsmen) do conform to "no hair visible" guideline, but most random pics of girls on the streets etc have some hair prominently visible.
I don't doubt that Basij do occasionally harass girls who don't strictly conform to the guidelines; it just doesn't seem as pervasive as it is in Saudi Arabia, judging by public photos with so many women subtly flaunting the laws. In KSA, literally the only thing you see are those awful head-to-toe burqas.
-
Re:Islamic porn
Even that is more theory than practice, at least in large cities - there are plenty of photos online of Iranian girls wearing headscarves that don't fully cover their hair.

Re:Austrailia != Free Country
THAT is who you should sue or prosecute.
Sometimes that is quite difficult, for example, they might be in Pakistan or Nairobi or Russia. But without Google, pretty much nobody would find their page. Google does play a role here, they aren't the innocent bystanders they are making themselves out to be.
I don't think they should pay damages for the libel. I do think it should be possible to force them to remove search results, via the proper legal channels, i.e. a court order. Google is not above the law.
What you in essence are saying is that GOOGLE should police the internet because it does the data search work. This is ridiculous if it was Bing that was in question here because it found the same results when a search for Bing.ca then would you recommend that Microsoft should police its search results?
Or if Google did the same thing?
Skewing and screwing around with search result by either Google or Bing or whatever to slant what comes up makes the whole concept of a search engine invalid does it not? I think a companies should be sued for skewing searches as otherwise we will wind up with Chinese style "mind police" search results!
Australia you ought to be ashamed because you are heading down one evil slippery slope to a world where the ghost of Joseph Goebbels is looking down and smiling upon you!

It just gives me a message saying it's not supported. Browser agent sniffing is a terrible practice. Instead, you should check what features are available. There's a bajillion articles out there that will tell you the same thing.
