Handcrafted Cat-5 goodness works well for me
I have this:

and several other similar examples hanging from the coat rack just inside my office door. That, and a copy of "WHO WILL BE EATEN FIRST" printed out across four A4 sheets on my wall, seems to work really well. -

Re:And here ladies and gentlemen is the problem...
And by that FMJ concentrates on a non-interesting part of warfare? As for cop shows... NYPD Blue is far more realistic than CSI:NY. And in that same vein - FMJ is more realistic than Apocalypse Now and FAR more realistic than The Green Berets. Just as Saving Private Ryan or Letters from Iwo Jima is more realistic than Battle of the Bulge, Dirty Dozen and again FAR more realistic than Pearl Harbor.
NYPD Blue and Saving Private Ryan are realistic, but not accurate. They are disproportionally focused on conflict since their primary purpose is to entertain - just like a video game.
If you become a soldier in the US military you will more likely turn a wrench or file paperwork than actually firing a bullet at the enemy. An accurate movie/show/video game would involve hours of standing, walking down the hall to get a printout, or looking through boxes for the right screw. The average military experience plays out more like a point-and-click adventure, than a first person shooter.
The inaccuracy of games/shows/movies is not that they depict gung-ho patriotism, or somber lament of death. The real propaganda is that wars are fought completely with bullets. It ignores most of the war that gets fought in meeting rooms, metal shops, warehouses, and driving semi-trucks. America's Army isn't about fostering a "USA #1" attitude. For the most part recruitable teens have already bought in or don't care. The real brainwashing is that you join the military and you'll become an action hero. You can move out of the neighborhood. Doing the same in the army constitutes being Absent Without (Official) Leave.
I'm sure all the people in violent urban neighborhoods are there by choice. And the punishment for gang members who go AWOL is a lot more harsh than the military.
Correction. PARTS of the cities. And Iraq is a COUNTRY. At war. It is not just Baghdad or just parts of it.
Yes, Iraq is a country, and just like other countries only parts of it are extremely dangerous driven by population denisty like the US.
I am willing to bet that you have far better chances of being shot anywhere in Iraq than standing on a sidewalk in Bel Air eating an ice cream.
Or at the top of the Eiffel Tower.
Or walking down the street in Moscow.I'd rethink that last one given Moscow has one of the highest murder rates in the world.

Re:I have to say I just dont get Manga
Of course this never happens in western comics at all, it's a uniquely Japanese phenomenon not found in comics produced
by such reputable companies as Marvel, DC and the like.I could go on... in fact, I could probably just make every letter a link and it'd still work.

Something like this Rabbit Ears Antennae or Antennae TV
Not to be confused with:
Rabbit Ears:You may get a nasty bite if you attempt to connect an antennae cable to one of these, nor do they take kindly to being rotated or extended to get the best reception even if you do manage to find a way of getting a cable attached.
You should not attempt to connect these rabbitg ears to any electrical or electronic appliance either, Fedora Hat with Rabbit Ears

Re:Intro to Input Method Editors
Um, whuh? No, that's not what I'm saying, not in the least. I *am* saying that the sheer number of glyphs prevented widespread computer use until software was developed that could allow for input using keyboards smaller than a piano (not smaller than the piano keyboard, smaller than the *piano* -- sample images).
Korean actually uses relatively few characters when written purely in Hangul, but composites them into syllable groupings, requiring complicated kerning algorithms. There was a short-lived movement to write out Hangul sequentially, as the Latin alphabet is used, but it really didn't catch on. Some linguists theorize that the syllable grouping of Hangul actually makes for faster reading than when written sequentially, as it better capitalizes upon pattern matching in the brain. Whatever the reason, folks decided they liked Hangul grouped in syllables, thank you very much. Thus the need for an IME or similar software, to ensure that the Hangul letters are properly composited.
If you're trolling, I apologize to others for feeding you. If you're not, and not flame-baiting either, re-read my previous post, and please pay closer attention to what I've actually written. To add to that, I have great respect for the written traditions of all three CJK languages, and would view any serious push to Latinize their writing as a hare-brained scheme at best, and an absolute travesty at worst.
Cheers,

Re:Well of course
Clearly, you've been reading too many libertarian propaganda pieces and not nearly enough real books on traffic engineering. If you make a 20 lane highway, it's going to only have marginally more capacity than a 4 lane highway. This has been carefully measured.
Likewise, you clearly haven't seen an example of how much space the same number of people in cars, bikes, and buses take up.
The real problem is that I might send my notational kids above the age of ten off to school on their bikes and know that my notational kids would be able to live healthier and longer lives than the other kids, even after I account the risk of moronic drivers. Except that I have to worry about people like yourself not paying attention while you drive a truck and calling CPS on me because you insist that the only proper form of transportation is a truck.
And in parts of Europe they do pack 3 kids on a bike and grab groceries on the way back. Sure the bike doesn't look like the road bikes they sell in America, but it gets the job done just fine.
I think you may be laboring under the assumption that I actually planned on living five miles from a transportation nexus. Well, I did the most recent move, doing a test commute first. But this also includes times when I lived in deep suburbia in the midwest.
If you are so confident about your truck's emissions, I've got a challenge for you. How about I seal myself in a room of equivalent space to your truck and drink some soda and belch incessantly. Actually, no, I'll drink cheap California sparkling wine, so that I've got both the risks of alcohol poisoning and the world's worst hangover on top of your imaginary CO2 emissions. You seal yourself into your truck with a pipe running the exhaust into your cabin and drive. Last man alive wins.
The simple and plain truth is that it is a matter of when, not if, we will run out of oil. Even if you believe the crazy Russians in their alternative oil generation theory, we still would need to treat the oil in the ground the way we should be treating our aquifers. It is also a matter of when, not if, enough CO2 that was previously in carbon compounds buried underground but is now in the atmosphere will cause problems.
The rate at which you squander gasoline in your truck means that you are bringing me closer to collective disaster. So, yes, this does give me the right to suggest that you quit squandering gasoline and fouling the air I breathe. And it also gives me the right to suggest that it's a better investment of my tax dollars (given that the highway and road system is funded mostly by my tax dollars and only partially through gas taxes) to build better bike facilities so that I don't have to intermix with traffic while riding and better rail lines so that I don't have to bike as far than trying to throw good money after bad by building more roads.
Personally, I'd much rather keep my uncomprimised car for when I really do need to drive 600 miles in a single day instead of waiting for somebody to figure out how to make a battery powered car and electric vehicle infrastructure that can do that... and ride my bike the rest of the time.

Re:*Brain Asplodes*
oh get off it. Here:
"yellow pages" . . 244 000 000 hits . . . 2 600 times linked in all of the Internet
flickr . . . . . . 251 000 000 hits . . 305 000 times linked
blogger. . . . . . 222 000 000 hits . .. 92 300 times linkedTwo useful web sites that get a similar number of mentions. Only in this case the mentions aren't referring to a paper edition! Because these services are actually useful, they get linked to from all over the web.
Here's the table with hyperlinks, you can check for yourself:
"yellow pages"-244 000 000 hits-2 600 times linked
flickr-251 000 000 hits-305 000 times linked
blogger-222 000 000 hits-92 300 times linkedStill think I picked on Slashdot? I've given you ample evidence.
The above are actually useful services. If you want to try to give me a counterexample, go ahead. I have shown you that yellowpages.com is a useless service. If you want to produce a counterexample (a site linked as little as yellowpages despite being actually useful), be my guest, I defy you.
But you won't find one. Because it's as I told you: yellowpages.com is as useful as looking at hamburgers over the Internet, and gets about as many links.

Re:Steam Plus Gasoline Engine Systems
Scientists and scholars the world over, from Norway to China have studied my conclusions at length. They are taking the time to read the documents I have written. Unlike the monkeys that touch the obelisk and find laughter and mirth, they go in and they learn much. Who exactly was the guy who brought the air-powered engine back into the discussion in 2003 when all your so-called "brilliant scholars" and "automotive engineers" had buried it in mothballs since 1997, tucked inside a crate at the University of Texas, hmm? You're looking at him. There wouldn't be a Tata Motors in India without me. The entire herd of people like you were rushing to follow each other over a cliff when I was striking a dozen motherlodes and resurrected the air-powered engine by adding steam => http://www.newpath4.com/enginewow.htm .
Writing on-the-fly in a way you find less than optimal I discovered how to stop cancers in their tracks, without a hospital white coat or antibiotics. I discovered the keys to turning on the human body's own cancer-killing devices. When you decide to quit following that herd you are in try this page and learn what they aren't => http://www.askinventor.com/pdflistfor2008.htm . Technically though, your (all SlashDotter's) raucous laughter over a less-than-standard website writing method is verification of my work; they also laughed at Socrates. I assure you the people fighting cancer and pollution and world ignorance and energy and poverty have learned to look underneath the surface. You would be advised to follow them, learn some things not in anybody's curriculum textbooks => yet.
After fighting and surviving two cancers and a major recurrence of Lyme's my writing has improved in the pdf files I've written this year. I also made some posts starting in September on a blog in Spain that are quite good. Here's the shortcut => http://tinyurl.com/4ntz2p. Once you read the comments I made there your eyes will be vastly more opened to things you ever thought possible. Laughter is good for jiggling the brain but becoming a full-time jigglebrain isn't a laughing matter. Dare to do something different from the herd. -

"TED" on DOS - 3KB of assembler!
There's an editor I used to put on all my DOS floppies called "TED" - it was 3KB of assembler, WYSIWYG monospaced text, and did most of what I needed if I didn't need regular expressions; otherwise I'd fire up some kind of vi or emacs clone. It was small enough that there was no reason to stick to EDLIN.
My DOS and Windows wallpaper back in those days was Saint Dogbert saying "Out Out!! You Demons of Stupidity!!" from the Dilbert cartoon, becuse that was obviously what "DOS" stood for.
I do have friends who were using the little HP palmtop computer that ran DOS as recently as a year or so ago; merely being way obsolete doesn't keep them from being one of the better personal organizers ever made. I had a Psion 3A that was of similar wonderfulness, though being a bit larger and heavier meant it got dropped a bit more often and eventually died.

China is going to snap together multiple spaceships to make a large space station? => main article link. That's cool. I appreciate their verfication. I figured after months of reading my posts and website pages they would pick up the idea. God knows the United States wouldn't use it for fear of offending someone {ahem, we dare not mention their name for fear of political repercussions and violent wrist-slapping} overseas.
For more information about my engine systems here are some posts I made September 11-18 in a Spanish blog.
Looks like China reads them so you may as well also. -

Re:Then we'd need to train a bunch of people...
Please don't confuse Batman with a batman. Undignified.
But obviously the scenario you've postulated has actually happened. Bruce Wayne supposedly became Batman in 1939. Obviously we've run through many Batmen since then.
Clearly this is also true for Batman's many opponents. Not only have have they been around as long as Batman, they've changed drastically, and many times. The Joker, for example, was originally just a weirdo who liked to wear whiteface. Then, for no obvious reason, he started dying his hair green. Then he went through a sort of red phase. Then he reinvented himself as a kind of mobster. Now he's supposedly a kind of post-modern nihilist, with rumors that he's gay.
The question we have to ask is, who's going to so much trouble to create all these strange, long-lived characters with a costume fetish who spend all their time fighting each other? I suspect a broad conspiracy to distract us from... something.

More about "Do no evil" toward "Evil for profit!"
More: Note that Mr. Solyanik's profile has a link to MSFT needs an extreme makeover.
Quote:
"It's sobering to realize that during Ballmer's term as CEO, MSFT has underperformed almost all of its top tech peers (including AAPL, IBM, HPQ, SAP, INTC, CSCO, SYMC, NOK, ORCL, ADBE, RIMM, QCOM, Ebay, and AMZN), and badly lagged the major averages. We may even see our third plunge to test the 2000 lows during his watch. Unbelievable. There may be another major technology CEO with an equivalent or worse track record who is still in power, but a name doesn't come readily to mind."
In my opinion, Microsoft depends for much of its profit on adversarial behavior. -

My Offical Feed ListHerewith, my own RSS feeds list. I have a few categories of stuff I keep up on on a regular basis; this listing includes only (mostly) blogs that are posting regularly.
Second Life Blogs - Blogs about the Second Life virtual world. Usually I list these by avatar name.
- The Lexx's Second Life - Alexzandria Aeon ("Lexx") is my "SL daughter" and a businesswoman.
- Jacek Antonelli - An artist and commentator on various aspects of the world.
- Hamlet Au - New World Notes - The "big dog" in Second Life blogging. Hamlet Au used to work for Linden Lab, and wrote a book, The Making of Second Life.
- life|cubed - One of my friends, "Padre" Triste Bertrand, who is also a minister in RL.
- Cala - Transgender in Second Life - She writes about some interesting topics.
- Evans Avenue Exit - I write this one.
:-) I post about current events, scripting, and whatever else suits my fancy. - Vint Falken - One of the premier European SL bloggers (she's from Belgium).
- Grand Unified Linden Blog - Official news and information from Linden Lab.
- Torley Lives - Everybody in Second Life should know Torley Linden. Torley is unique, helpful, and watermelon-flavored.
- An Engine Fit For My Proceeding - Ordinal Malaprop is SL's own version of Ada Lovelace...a fine Victorian lady and a top-flight scripter.
- Massively (Second Life) - The latest news and information about Second Life. (Massively.com also covers other virtual worlds and MMOs.)
- Second Thoughts - Prokofy Neva is perhaps the most-hated person in SL, and is sort of the "official gadfly." He's well worth reading for an alternate perspective, though.
- Dwell On It - Tateru Nino is one of the smartest people I know. Her writing is part of what got me into SL in the first place.
- MeraTalk - Mera Pixel is insightful, witty, and very purple.
- Second Life Grid Status Reports - When there are problems with SL--an all-too-often occurrence these days, alas--Linden Lab posts here.
Political Blogs - This is stuff with a right-wing bent, and is the section that will probably be most responsible for this post being modded down.
:-/- The Smallest Minority - Kevin Baker is partly a gunblogger, partly an excellent commentator. He's had good posts recently about education.
- La Shawn Barber's Corner - A Christian blogger who only dabbles in politics these days, spending more time writing about music and digital technology.
- Leslie Carbone - A Virginia political blogger who I found via Twitter.
- Personal Effects - Connie du Toit is one of the clearest-minded writers you'll find on many subjects.
- Geopoliticus - Kim du Toit (yes, he and Connie are married) is the L33t Master of Firearms, and an insightfu

Re:People don't learn from history
I would agree with you if there had been large swings between Clinton and Obama over the last few months, but that hasn't been the case. Instead there has been a clear trend favouring Clinton's performance in the general. See 538's win percentage tracker for instance (direct link to the file,if you prefer). In my view, if you refuse to count the conclusions of 4 months worth of polling, then there is no statistical argument that you will accept. All statistical arguments for the 2008 election can only contain information gathered up until the end of May 2008. If you argue that they are too imprecise to come to a conclusion, then you can't argue anything at this point.
I don't believe that the sky is falling, by the way. The Democrats clearly have a shot at the white house with Obama as the nominee, it will just be a closer race than it would have been if they had chosen Clinton. Too close, in my view, for a year where Democrats were supposed to sweep the elections and where the Republicans were thought to be in disarray.
The argument that Clintonites will fall in line as soon as she drops out of the primary race is also incorrect. It will require some time for the party to heal. Obama has taken the right first steps, although it seems many of his supporters are still stuck in primary campaign mode, constantly bashing Clinton as if Obama was still fighting for the nomination. They will have to stop too for the party to truly unify. But that really won't affect the outcome in most states, with the possible exception of Michigan. Even if it stopped tomorrow, I'm worried that the bitterness will carry on to November.
And, lastly, since I imagine you're thinking it, no, I am not a Clinton supporter. I feel that the DLC has pushed Democratic policy far passed the middle and made them De facto Conservatives. But Clinton's and Obama's policies are almost identical (besides tiny differences in their health care plan and her last minute, desperation tactic support for the gas tax holiday), so I don't see any reason to support him either. -
