Re: Even more like Photohop is
Yes. Gimpshop is better than gimp. But what about Pixel32? Pixel32 is MUCH like Adobe PS and it's available for multiple-plattforms, too. Check out http://www.kanzelsberger.com/pixel/?page_id=12 or http://pixel32.box.sk/

Re:Actually
I called the Microsoft authentication hotline, which had an automated voice that insisted that I read out loud the 54-digit code that Windows provided. I tried typing it in, but it ignored me. When I read it out loud, the Hotline told me that number was invalid and hung up on me.
Your experience closely mirrors my own, just a month ago. Except in my case it was an HP system, and after getting fucked-over once, I went to http://astalavista.box.sk/ and downloaded and used WGA crack v2.0. Problem solved.
If there's a technological measure preventing me from using my property, I have the absolute right to bypass it, and will proudly defend that in court if Microsoft or anyone else even considers coming after me for a "pirated" version of XP. If the next update breaks anything, you can bet I'm going to be as big a nuisance to them, as they've been to me. -
Had the same problem...
Had the same problem, fixing a friend's HP... Failed just over a year (southbridge chip got up to several hundred degrees, just a few seconds after power-on). Only $60 for a mobo, so I swapped it.
XP wouldn't boot on the new board, because of the different IDE controller... For some reason, Microsoft has remained intentionally idiotic on the issue for decades now. If you have a BartPE disc, and the skill to do some tricky registry editing, it is fixable: http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=216382&cid=175 65792
After that, everything was fine, EXCEPT for WGA. Went through the telephone spiel, only to find it calling me a pirate. Since the software is 100% legal I felt no compunction at all in using some grey-market tools to patch winlogon.exe (see http://astalavista.box.sk/ -- NSFW) , and everything has worked 100% perfectly from there on.
DRM is tolerable only when it doesn't get it your way, and doesn't compromise your privacy. WGA fails completely on both counts.
That little event led me to start learning about customizing Windows 2000 install CDs, because I realize I'm going to be using that version of Windows for a very LONG time into the future, so better make the best of it. -

Don't forget the slightly unknown
Astalavista.box.sk
Don't ask me how i know of this webpage.

Re:Name confusion?
Now if Microsoft can't nail astalavista.box.sk for posting Windows product ids, they can sue for violating their product name.
-
Re:astalavista
And in related news, astalavista.box.sk will be sued for a trademark breach.
(I know, I know, they're 11 years old. But MS is bigger.) -
Re:Get the facts?
> @ Windows patches are smaller (binary
> diffs as opposed to full updated packages).
Their are not binary diffs - what the hell is binary diff anyway - their are just single files. If you use properly modularized (splitted packages) Linux system then also you just download packages that you need.
Google for "Delta Patches", also known as binary diffs.
It's first mass deployment was in cracking shareware to full version (http://astalavista.box.sk/). -
Re:Just crack it
There are places to do this. Make certain you have java turned off and pop-ups off too...

Look for your keys on the net
If the company would not cooperate do what any savy computer geek would do GOTO Astalavista and lookup you software. The odds are you'll find the keys there.

Re:Serious question
But then again, there are a lot of time limited software demos, and I don't suppose that anyone tries to hack those...
You're kidding, right? Go run a search here for any semi well-known piece of software that stops working after 30 days. There's most likely a crack for it. -
Re:Another one...;)I checked, virii does appear to be the correct spelling Exampl1 Example 2 Example 3 Example 4

Altavista had more dignity
Google really fell in my eyes, even more than they did after their DMCA fiasco... Altavista had much more dignity when they treated the domain owner with much more respect, while they were still at altavista.digital.com. And they didn't send C&D letters to AstaLaVista, a search engine for cracks.
Google sucks. Let's show them by turning "google" into a generic term! Use this word when you google for hot deal on eBay, google for information on AllTheWeb and google for porn at Booble (not that there is much porn to google for). :) -
Re:Activation.Yeah, you know why no one is upset about it? Because of sites like this. If you purchase Photoshop CS, it's perfectly legal (unless shrinkwrap EULAs someday end up becoming legally significant) to apply a patch to it to make it do whatever you want.
I bought Need for Speed Unlimited, a racing game from EA, and their patch installer (An ActiveX control) is broken, so I couldn't install the patch, so I couldn't play online. I actually had to download a version of the patch released by FAIRLIGHT in order to get updated and play on the net.
-
Re:Activation.
I've been using product activation for a few years already, and it's quite convenient, actually...

Re:Knowing how to search
Wow, you know all that stuff and cant simply go to astalavista like everybody?
;-)
btw (but you probably already know of), fravia made a nice website about searching, another quick place to use search engines is on freddo's search page. -
Re:Runtime Error
IIRC there are quite a few programs that do this!
I actually purchased CDRWIN, instead of getting the hack of Astalavista, and when I reinstalled my machine it refused to take my license because it said that my license was too old. I did however give up on trying to use Windows as a Desktop. K3b is so much nicer anyways. -
Astalavista
No, they are Astalavista.

Re:Not about open/closed source, it's about keys..
you're SOL if the company won't (or isn't able to) give you a new key.
Mmm... not really. Desperate times call for desperate measures. (Warning: might not be a work-safe link) -
I'm not worried about Big Brother......at least he's your brother
I'm more worried about Joe Schmoe, who with a home-made or Chinese-manufactured scanner would be able to calculate your net worth at the very moment he passes you on the street. This is a hypothetical guy who would be able to magically divine that you were carrying a 40gb iPod, a top-of-the-line Thinkpad, a cameraphone, PDA, Coach wallet, Cartier watch, and mark you as the fattest target on the block even though you have none of these things in plain view.
Mobile-phone scanners have existed for the purposes of hijacking and cloning mobile phone numbers, so I can't see it taking very long for an intrepid, technically proficient miscreant to take advantage of this great new technology which identifies individual items.
Anyone who's spent a couple of years in NYC knows that you don't count your money out in the open or wave expensive things around in the air. Imagine if they put RFID tags in our paper currency. You'd be able to tell how much money someone was carrying, without their knowing it. Just the same, someone else would be able to peer into your wallet, and even know what brand your wallet is. Same said person would be able to walk down the block inconspicuously scanning the trunks of cars in the hopes of coming across a stash of goodies, and any packages left on doorsteps, any mailboxes he passes along the way. How scary is that?
Am I missing something? Is the idea that just about *every* consumer-goods-item will have an RFID tag?

Google Warez Machine
I regarding the ability to use Google as a warez search machine. The article was about Google censorship and the one response to my post pinpointed almost exactly the point that I brought up, which is the point discussed in this article.
Google has a nice long list of directory lists containing warez (remember the days of l33t FTP searching for filenames? Google for something like, in my last article: "xwin32*.exe * * * * *" "listing of"), serial numbers (Oh, I've found XP's serial number several times in Google's cache) and other "sensitive" information. My question is if other commercial sites are being constantly shut down due to these links (intentional or not), why aren't people targeting Google as well?
In fact, if I'm *cough*too cheap to buy software*cough* or just want to evaluate some crippleware or such before I buy it, I often skip astalavista and cracks.am and just Google it up. Saves me the porn and pop ups, and I don't have to cripple my browser for this (yes I know it's possible to do in other ways, yes I enjoy javascript, no thanks, I don't want comments about how I'm retarded because I don't do it the right way).
This is similar for sites such as the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine that contains other sensitive information.
Because of the academic merit of both of these search mechanisms, I doubt either one will be shut down. Indeed, I highly doubt restrictions will be placed. They're valuable tools for finding more valuable tools. For more information about this sort of stuff, I suggest searching on Fravia+'s web-searching lore. Other information on there relates to "reality cracking", reverse engineering, and other taboo topics. Google's got it all cached. Interested? Just search for (insert topic here) site:searchlores.org.
Sometimes I don't think the comparison of Google to God is that far off. Pardon my heresy. -

Re:one reson whyI right now run Windows 2000 Professional with Service Pack 4 installed plus the current version of ZoneAlarm running; unless you're a cracker with extremely intimate knowledge of the OS kernel itself, it'll be very hard to hack into my system
I highly doubt that. Even your precious ZoneAlarm has security flaws. Breaking into a personal computer is like stealing a car, if someone really wants to they will. No cracker really cares about someone's personal machine, (as someone already mentioned) they care about servers. You're more or less protected from most of the idiots out there who don't know what they're doing but can google exploits, but don't get too confident because your system can be broken into.
