Re:XBMC Plugins
Yessir thats the way to go! XBMC for the win! At least as long as you have unlimited cable or a very high cap heh. Especially since Boxee Box no longer supports pc's.
:( Then theres PLEX and a few other variants out there, I'd stick to XBMC if I were you; plenty of plugin's and aggreators and repositories out there for XBMC you'll never be sorry. -
Good idea, poor implmentation...
I've seen other similar implementations that show more a bit more promise (common complaint is that it's hard to see that one in the dark).
YMMV. -
Re:Given how few PCs are connected to televisions
"How many Netflix subscribers actually use the PC version? "
Anyone that uses PlayON to stream Netflix to their HDTV. I believe XBMC and boxee does that too.
I recently had to stop using my XBMC for Netflix because I had so many problems with getting Silverlight to work correctly with XP. Now I stream Netflix through the PS3. -

Their own website:
http://forums.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=22313Wiki:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxee#Criticism_regarding_the_Boxee_Box_by_D-Link
This viewpoint is furthered by the user interface development changes that took place between the beta version and the version 1.0 software shipped with the Boxee Box, with very little public user testing or input. These interface changes place greater emphasis on streaming content versus local downloaded content. Coupled with the removal of the BitTorrent client that was present in the beta version, these changes have led users to believe there is an active shift towards subscription/pay content. -

Re:Roku + media streaming
It's called the Boxee Box. I know, I know, Google TV et al will eat its lunch eventually, but it basically does everything you claim to want. At $200, it's cheaper than upgrading my home media player (though I don't know about "one for every room").

Re:Not THAT Hellacious
It sounds like you spent too much time on researching the ripping and not enough researching the media center softwares. I found MS's Media Center to be boorish at best, often forcing me to use third party media managers for pulling movie and TV show information.
If you're sticking with Windows, MediaPortal has a great community (especially for skins) and installing both ffdshow and haali media splitter will cover all codecs needed. MediaPortal also has great support for DVR functions and works with most DVB cards (even my old ATI All-In-Wonder Pro from '97). When I was running it, I found the tv-over-ethernet stuff very useful when I used the DVB cards (one computer with tv tuners that shares to all media centers), and would definitely use it again if we decide to get cable or satellite.
These days I'm using XBMC due to the lack of interest for DVR functionality. main room running Linux Mint and the bedrooms running XP. I particularly enjoy the built-in media manager and extreme ease of setup. If you have media on different machines, you can add them all to one folder similarly to how Win7 uses the libraries feature (But better. Much, much better). There's also a quality iPhone app that you can use to browse media, use as a remote, etc. I use that in addition to the webpage and IR remotes so I never have to be too far away from the remote. This is a key feature when dealing with children under the age of 5.
I did try Boxee for a stint, but it seemed to be too internet-focused and took an unacceptable amount of time to display local files through the Movies or TV show displays. I thought it did a great job of displaying and playing the online content, but when the primary source is local media and all pertinent bug reports get set to "will not fix", I'll pass. The $199 boxee box is tempting, but only if I can run XBMC on it instead.
If you don't have kids, I recommend the Gyration media center remotes. They do all that a universal remote does in addition to being used as a mouse/keyboard/media remote for the computer. If you do have kids, go with an older Phillips MCE remote. The older IR receivers work with XP, Vista, Win7, and Linux, whereas the newer ones only do Vista, Win7, and Linux. Not a huge deal if you have new equipment, but if you want to use older equipment that can make a difference. -
The Remote is RF (i.e. You can hide the box)
I for one want to see more devices that stay 100% out-of-the-fucking-way. Let me hide it in a low profile cabinet. Let me mount it BEHIND my TV if I want. I bought the TV to look at the TV... I bought your device, TO KEEP LOOKING AT THE TV. Sigh.
The Boxee Box uses an RF remote. Feel free to hide the box behind the TV if that's your preference.

The Boxee box = perfect
the Boxee box: http://www.boxee.tv/box is perfect for you, although it wont be here till November. I also have an ubuntu server with a few terabytes of media that I have the exact same problem with, so I am anxiously awaiting for the release of the Boxee box. Im running boxee(which I love) on my ubuntu box fyi, but again basically the same deal as you.
-
Boxee Box
If you can wait until November, the Boxee Box seems to be a really good option. It's boxee based (which is, itself, based on XMBC), cheap (150$), small and does pretty much everything you want.
Plus, it's sexy.

Boxee Box
http://www.boxee.tv/box Coming in May there will be a Boxee Box for about $200 that streams content via wireless or wired connection with several output options for your TV. Quite the cool setup with a remote that has a keyboard like a slider phone. I hope it lives up to the hype. I'll definitely be getting one.

careful with this advice
If you're using Linux or Windows, I would go with Boxee. It does all of the Hulu/Netflix/Pandora/ESPN360/etc. content, and has finally become genuinely stable enough for everyday use, even for my mildly non-technical wife, who has to keep TV rolling for 2 kids on demand.
Actually, Netflix does not work at all under linux, including via Boxee. That's a function of Netflix's choice of Sliverlight as its DRM lock-in. Moonlight still isn't there....
Hulu has been a major cat-and-mouse game with Boxee, and on Linux, the game hasn't been going well for Boxee. Most shows won't play through the first commercial break.
I finally gave up with Ubuntu and migrated my Boxee system to WinXP. It's a single-processor Amd Athlon 3200 XP, which typically renders video fine. In XP, Hulu and Netflix run poorly through Boxee with consistent choppiness. Running Hulu and Netflix through a web browser on the system works fine.
I really like Boxee and will likely upgrade to a multi-core processor as people using that architecture aren't encountering the same performance issues.

Boxee
http://www.boxee.tv/ has been a pretty decent means of getting various web series onto my TV. Seems to have some issues pulling hulu content though. Does a wonderful job of playing local content too.

Check out this site: http://wiki.boxee.tv/System_Requirements Also, as an anecdotal data point, I'm running it under Ubuntu 9.10 on a dual core 2.4Ghz P4 with 1GB RAM and an old GeForce 5200. I can play content up to 720p without any issues.

The best media solution I've found
For quite a while I was trying all sorts of these media players; trying to find the perfect one. After a few years, many dollars and countries (searching korea) later I discovered that they all suck in one way or another. The best thing? A simple ubuntu box with a logitech mini wireless keyboard.
If something breaks, or some new feature is required you can easily fix it. Once you have a working solution, just freeze it.
Software I like:

Re:Why not Tivo?
*sigh* it's 4.7" wide at the base, but just look at the picture, it really is tiny and not something you would stack anything on even if it were a right-angled cube. It's smaller than a Nintendo GameCube.

Re:Form over functionalityThe thing is the size of a soda can and can be placed anywhere you want, including out of sight. From http://blog.boxee.tv/2009/12/09/step-1-make-a-boxee-box-no-need-to-cut-a-hole/
:Rest assured the Boxee Box will fit into your entertainment center. If the look doesn’t quite fit with your decor, not to worry. The RF remote means you can place the box out of sight and still control it. Of course, the Boxee Box prefers being on top : )

Mythbuntu + BoxeeI've been using Mythbuntu since the 8.x release and it's been pretty reliable for everything you mentioned. Yes, the integrated DVD player sucks by default, but it's trivial to set up Xine for this. I don't use the default MythTV player for anything other than cable recorded content and my family loves it.
Integrate Boxee into MythTV and stream Netflix to it and you have a solution that does just about anything (short of Cable Cards) that anyone could want.

PlayOn or BoxeeI used to run Boxee on my Mac and PC at home, until I discovered PlayON.
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxee
Boxee is a cross-platform freeware media center software with a 10-foot user interface and social networking features designed for the living-room TV. Boxee is a fork of the free and open source XBMC media center software which Boxee uses as an application framework for its GUI and media player core platform, together with some custom and proprietary additions. Marketed as the first ever "Social Media Center", Boxee enables its users to view, rate and recommend content to their friends through many interactive social networking features. The current version is Alpha but works very well. You can register for free on their website. Also the beta version of Boxee will be released for all platforms on December 7th 2009.
PlayOn gets your favorite Internet Videos off your computer screen and onto your TV. Download and try out PlayOn for free for 14 days. All you need is a home networked PC and a DLNA-compatible device — like a PLAYSTATION 3, Xbox 360, or Moxi HD DVR. We've also announced PlayOn for Wii public beta.
My Notes:
At home we have two Xbox360's and we stream content to them from PlayOn. From a budget perspective view PlayOn is the way to go if you have consoles at home. PlayOn only costs $39.99 and to configure it its a onetime setup which is pretty straight forward. You can also download free plugins from PlayOn Plugins. At my home we currently we use Netflix, Hulu, Cartoon Network and a bunch others). Once you got your settings configured, you go into your console and in the Video section you will see a "Channel" that looks like "yourPCName:Playon" when you select it you will see all the options you configured to watch. It works as advertised and works very well. I have another 360 that got banned in my bedroom with a 36" LCD and it works great.
Boxee, I used it for a while, but I never had a PC/Mac dedicated just for that... It is pretty good and there is lots of support... One thing is that Boxee is free.
I hope this helps!

Boxee - Not a DVR, but still awesome
I use Boxee for playback. It's been very reliable for me on multiple flavors of Ubuntu. I realize it doesn't have true DVR capability, but your complaints seemed to be more to do with the playback portion of your experience and, using Boxee, I've had no problems playing back pretty much anything (though, for some reason, I can't get youtube to work). It also automatically indexes your media file collections (assuming you're following some standard media naming conventions, i.e. Lie.to.me.S01E01.avi) so you can easily view your entire collection and quickly pick out the show (or film, or music) you want to watch.

Boxee vs. Mark Cuban
I recently skimmed over a very interesting email conversation between the CEO of Boxee (a net based content aggregator) and Mark Cuban, a cable bully. Besides reminiscent of the infamous Linus-AST flame, it's a great illustration of the point of view of the cable industry... and how, I would say, they're marching steadily to a slow demise.

Up to Netflix
Still lacking in the latest Linux release, however, is the long-awaited addition of Netflix movie and TV show streaming for subscribers to Netflix's monthly service.
According to this thread, the ball's in Netflix's court to get their streaming service running on Linux: http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=3385

Re:64 bit, dammit
While not a deb solution, this thread provides a script that will completely build boxee 0.9.10-5534 on your Ubuntu 8.10 x86_64 machine.

Compiling Boxee
For those Linux users who want to brave compiling Boxee from source, I was able to get the previous release (0.9.8.4880) working in Gentoo using this thread: http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=2309
I plan to give the new release (0.9.9.5324) a go this weekend rather than waiting for Boxee to come out with their Ubuntu version later this month. If I can get it to work, I'll post back to that thread.

Re:I think that category is fading
A Mac Mini looks to be a decent media center if you get a wireless keyboard+mouse and download HandBrake+VLC.
The Mac Mini also has a built-in infrared receiver, so you can use it with a remote as well including the Apple remote, some universal remotes, and the Harmony remote. Also, there are some great media center applications for Mac including Boxee, Plex, and XBMC.

Re:Sub $500?
Yes, Netflix works with Boxee on Mac. Netflix does NOT work with Boxee on Linux, because Netflix uses Silverlight, and there's no Linux port for it, nor will there be in the near future. The Boxee developers have been quite clear on this point.
