Re:Credible Site?
Where they *really* differ is in audience size and rate of change. CNN is in a long term down hill slide which has been going on for more than a decade. Fox is generally been able to attract a larger and larger audience in that same time frame. Fox is being successful, CNN is dying.
Meanwhile, in the Real World, where we can look at charts of actual numbers we see that this is nonsense. Fox News viewership peaked in 2009 and has been dropping ever since. CNN has followed a similar downward trend (it peaked a year earlier in 2008) but has maintained a steady market share for several years, its drop merely paralleling Fox's decline.
It is interesting that the common liberal refrain is that Fox News is lying about stuff while CNN isn't. Or the alternate perspective that Fox News is unbiased and CNN is. Reality is BOTH are biased in their own ways, and if anything Fox is more creditable given that it's audience is growing while CNN's is in decline
...If only we didn't have studies like this one that shows that Fox "News" viewers score below those with no information while CNN viewers score above this information-free cohort.

Court case for Microsoft managers?
Windows 10 is Malware. "Malware means software designed to function in ways that mistreat or harm the user." Will Microsoft top managers be the targets of a court case? Other spyware makers have been convicted. Will there be an anti-trust case against Microsoft's virtual monopoly?
Apparently Microsoft is moving towards these arrangements: With Windows 10, Microsoft has complete control over any computer connected to the internet, so Microsoft can use its spyware, which it calls "telemetry", to gather personal information to be sold to advertisers. Eventually there may be monthy payments to use Windows, as with Microsoft Office-365. Apparently Microsoft is paid by secret agencies of governments to steal personal information.
As many people have said, putting spyware into Windows 10, and not allowing people to know the purpose of "updates", will obviously be bad for Microsoft, eventually. So, why is Microsoft becoming even more offensive? It seems that the company is amazingly badly managed. For example, the cover of the January 16, 2013 issue of BusinessWeek magazine has a large photo of Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer (now replaced) with the headline calling him "Monkey Boy". See the BusinessWeek cover in this article: Steve Ballmer Is No Longer A Monkey Boy, Says Bloomberg BusinessWeek. The BusinessWeek cover says "No More" and "Mr.", but that doesn't take much away from the fact that the magazine called Ballmer Monkey Boy -- on its cover.
Worst CEO in the United States: Quote from an article in Forbes Magazine about Steve Ballmer: "Without a doubt, Mr. Ballmer is the worst CEO of a large publicly traded American company today."
Another quote: "The reach of his bad leadership has extended far beyond Microsoft when it comes to destroying shareholder value -- and jobs." (May 12, 2012)

Microsoft has no plans to tell us what's in Windows patches. Each update is a black box, and it's going to stay that way.
Leaks show that Microsoft writes release notes, so why can't it publish them? The lack of documentation of Windows' updates is a baffling move on Microsoft's part.

Re:Not ill timed...
The NRA is a de facto heat-shield for the gun-manufacturing lobby.
Whenever a debate arises about the availability of guns that can kill lots of people very quickly, it's the NRA (not manufacturers) that speaks up in favor of keeping these guns in the marketplace.
This is arguably true, but misleading nonetheless. It's misleading because it appears to imply that the NRA exists to front for the gun manufacturers. It may do that, but that's not why it exists.
That may not be why the NRA was created, but that is in fact what it has become. As I said, a de facto heat-shield for the gun industry.
It exists to meet the goals of its individual members, who are also it's primary source of funding.
A long time ago perhaps, but not any more. Less than half of its revenues come from program fees and dues. The bulk of its revenues comes from "contributions, grants, royalty income, and advertising, much of it originating from gun industry sources."

Re:Oh the Irony.....
Additionally, randomly picking France or some other 'Western' country that is the size of Minnesota and has 1/8th the US population is simple cherry-picking. If you take all of Europe from Portugal to Moscow, which is far more equivalent to the size, population, and geographic disparities of the US, as well as income and education variations, the murder rates are far closer despite firearm ownership being so much less so as to be statistically none in comparison.
I'm not sure you want to be using Russia as your benchmark of a civilized society. If you look at homicide rates in the OECD you'll see that the USA has a homicide rate three times or more higher than almost everyone else.
Even if you believe this is solely a "people problem", do you not think there might be a danger in giving a naturally homicidal population free access to weapons that make homicide easy?

Re:Snitching devices
You are suddenly getting junk mail for that little (LEGAL) problem you have, and now everyone in the house knows too.
http://www.businessinsider.com...
Like how Target outed a pregnant teen to her family?
Though so far it's only been used for good. The teen should have been able to have that conversation with her family, and then did. The driver who hit and run should have stopped, and then did. So far there's been no "injustice" reported, and given the rabid responses here, if there was one, I'm sure it'd be posted here many times.
While I generally agree with you - if we catch this unexpected "benefit" of technology now, perhaps we can prevent or defer it's eventual ubiquity. It's like complaining about credit agencies now (and their perverse way of scoring you such that people in debt score higher), instead of 20-30 years ago when we might have been able to do something about it.
We killed DIVX, maybe we can shame the car companies into not installing spyware-clippy into ALL of our cars. Some foolish or arrogant people will have to be the ginuea pigs.

The illusion of minimum wage
This goes completely away if wages are required to be livable.
If you can simply dictate that wages shall be livable, why stop there? Why not require wages to be extraordinary? If a $15 minimum wage is good, isn't a $40 minimum wage better? Isn't a $200-per-hour minimum wage far better?
Now back to reality. People who earn more than the minimum wage do so, by definition, not because a law requires their employer to pay them that much, but because there is significant demand for the kind of labor they provide. That significant level of demand arose organically, because the economy grew. A minimum wage can be dictated by fiat, but demand for labor at that wage can never be dictated by fiat. So additional economic growth is the only thing that will organically create additional across-the-board increases in wages.
Why is it important to have "organic," across-the-board increases in wages?
Working-age people fall into four groups:
(1) The tens of millions who have no job at all, because to employ them at the current minimum wage would be to the net detriment of any employer.
(2) Those currently earning minimum wage, who would lose their job and fall into group (1) if the minimum wage were increased.
(3) Those currently earning minimum wage, who would retain their job if the minimum wage were increased. This is the only group that would benefit from increasing the minimum wage.
(4) Those currently earning more than minimum wage. These folks tend to receive a marginal after-tax wage cut when the minimum wage is increased, because the funds expended on increasing wages for group (3) -- and on increasing public assistance for group (2) -- have to come from somewhere! All things being equal, raising the minimum wage causes economic contraction, which in turn reduces the overall demand for labor. Certainly a move in the wrong direction.
By its effects on groups (3) and (4), raising the minimum wage also reduces income inequality (for those who still have a job). But that matters only to sheep who believe that "income inequality," the buzzphrase-of-the-left du jour, is a problem. I can prove that income inequality is not a problem.
Consider World A, where everyone has exactly the same tiny income. Everyone is malnourished, living in tiny dilapidated shacks, and wearing tattered rags. But hey, this world has zero income inequality!
And also World B, where the poorest person -- who, being disabled, live solely on the charitable contributions of others -- can afford to own two new cars, dine on excellent food, and live in a 5000 sq. ft. house. At the same time, the richest person has an income five orders of magnitude higher than the poorest person; thus, this world "suffers" from enormous income inequality.
Any sane person would choose to live in World B over World A -- proving that income inequality is not the problem. Poverty is the problem.
A New York Times reporter recently published observations about how the nature of poverty in Mississippi has changed. 50 years ago, the poor had no shoes and hunger was rampant. Today, they wear Nikes, and their #1 heath problem is obesity. Thus, we have already made enormous strides toward eliminating poverty, and the credit goes to organic economic growth, not minimum wage hikes. If we had the patience to pursue a few more decades of organic economic growth, we would arrive in World B. Instead, it looks like the voters will eat our seed corn, party hearty, and opt for short-term illusions like minimum wage hikes and more exponential growth of the national debt, which can only move us closer to World A.

Re: Windows 7
Windows 10 is growing at a crazy rate. So, it is Slashdot anecdotal "I don't know anybody using this", against independent reports about well over 100 million users (!) already several months ago.
Microsoft Edge just passed Safari (and all Linux use combined) in market share, but if you don't bother to test web sites for Safari then Edge would be in the same category right now, yes.

Re:Equality of opportunity matters
Where is the diversity agent advocating against Asians in California college admissions?
Asians do get "penalized" in some college admissions

Re:That won't last long...
Steve Wozniak spent the night in jail over his device
even better is this tidbit from the article:
He taught the other prisoners how to disconnect the wires leading to the ceiling fans and connect them to the bars so people got shocked when touching them.

Re:Open to abuse, by design
You haven't though this through. To make an allegation you need the victim's name and probably their student ID. There need to be details of what happened. Any script that attempts to do this is doing to be really, really obvious. And the data is visible to the people running the service, who are doubtless looking out for this kind of abuse.
Even worse, if it did somehow work and escalated, there would be an investigation into those 33 rape claims and the alleged victims would be asked about them. Better hope their stories match what the script randomly generated.
Also, who said anything about "social justice", this is about the reporting of crime. Given recent history, it seems like Mens Rights Activists are more likely to try something like this.
No, this is vigilante justice. Why not just hire you're own police and create your own jail while you're at it. There's a legal system for all of this and it should be used. If it doesn't meet the needs, the we need to change it.

Re: Damned Lies And Politics
So now we know for sure which are the propaganda mills in "mainstream" news. I read anti-encryption articles on at least CNN, MSN, Fox, and Infoworld. Are there any others worthy of mention in this context? They are now off my list of "reputable news" sources, though they may be useful for staying up on current events... take it with a grain of salt.
The BBC: Paris attacks: Silicon Valley in crosshairs over encryption
Some gems from the article:
"And I do think this is a time for particularly Europe, as well as here in the United States, for us to take a look and see whether or not there have been some inadvertent or intentional gaps that have been created in the ability of intelligence and security services to protect the people that they are asked to serve."while attitudes towards creating government backdoors were "hostile", that atmosphere "could turn in the event of a terrorist attack or criminal event where strong encryption can be shown to have hindered law enforcement". Paris may just be that event.
Also, some jackwagon New York prosecutor is calling for legislation mandating phone manufactures use weak encryption and provide backdoors for law enforcement:
A New York prosecutor is calling for federal legislation to weaken smartphone encryptionIt's just ridiculous. Intelligence agencies and police have unprecedented data and location tracking on nearly every person in the world and it's STILL NOT ENOUGH for them. They will never be satisfied, even if every person in the world provided them a 24/7 video feed they would demand constant brainwave scans to "protect our children". It's time to say enough is enough and remove the people in favor of a surveillance state from a position of power, either by voting them out of office or voting the people who appointed them out of office.

Re:NUKEM!! NUKEM NOW!!
Now what the attacks on Paris has to do with this, I'm at a complete loss to understand.
This whole subthread started, when it was implied, that the West in general — and the US in particular — aren't any better than ISIS and is equally outrage-worthy. This incident was offered as proof of that.
My point is, it proves the opposite. We are better, because the "collateral murder" incident is clearly an outrage to most of us — with Pentagon trying to hide it — while the Paris murders are something, the enemy is proud of and publicizes it as much as they can.
You broke the country, you bought it. Get your lazy arses back in there and finish the job.
The cooler heads here didn't want to leave Iraq so early, but we are saddled with a President — whom you awarded with a Nobel Peace Prize (a stupid act, which progressives still would not acknowledge as a mistake) — who does not think, there is true evil in the world... Or, if there is, it is his own country. You can blame us for electing him, but his victory was not without your help. Twice.

Re:The liberals are in fact aiding the moslems !
And then you can talk about how, instead of simply paving those areas over into glass, which we could do any time we want,
So this isn't about doing what is right or will lead to a better world, but being stronger and forcing everyone into submission? I got the bigger club: Do what I say. This isn't the best way to instill confidence that the "western way of living" is better or more moral.
we're instead going to as much trouble as possible to hit and limit damage to individual targets that match very specific criteria.
What specific criteria? http://www.huffingtonpost.com/... http://www.businessinsider.com... Is there a court that can be called to question drone strikes? What happens if somebody does not adhere to these "specific criteria"? Any consequences? No? So these are just arbitrary killings.
Also the words "as much trouble as possible to hit and limit damage" strike me as caustic. A proper way would be to arrest those people and give them a proper trial. But obviously that is far to much trouble. No, they have a huge problem with immigrants who don't want to become part of French culture, don't want to do what's necessary to thrive in that economy, and who show up expecting to be handed a nice standard of living in exchange for
... showing up.Well you could make them feel more welcome:

http://www.france24.com/en/20150120-calais-france-migrants-denounce-police-brutality-hrw
If you treat people like shit, it is fairly likely that they won't want to integrate.Just like is happening across Europe generally, now. Europe has only itself to blame for allowing it to happen.
Blame ourselves whatfor? In my town we got a great new restaurant opened by a woman from Iraq which is great. I worked with a software developer from Afghanistan (which didn't make any difference whatsoever). The CEO of a company I worked for was from Turkey. Many of the people from the middle east are integrated into society without any problems.
It's about culture. The religion in question is the organizing system within the culture that's causing the problems. The voices of that religion are the motivating features of the culture, and the fundamental features of that religion spell out how the people who adhere to it are supposed to interact with those who aren't members.
Just take a look at history. Christianity has been used to justify the inquisition, burning witches, the crusades, wars between catholics and protestants. Only in the last 200 (?) years it has been more or less a religion of peace. Homosexuals have been a problem for the church for years, but now it's changing. Divorces are getting more and more accepted.
Since the bible hasn't changed in all those years, this somewhat indicates that religion is more a backwards reflection of society, than it is coining society.Quit making excuses for medieval-minded theocratic thugs and their willing followers.
I don't really care all that much about those thugs. They are a lost cause. Most of the actual terrorists are already dead anyway. And I just hope the police catches whoever is behind this (organization/financing) and locks them up for good.
What I care about is that we (as the western world) do not response in a likewise medieval manner and start another pointless war or kill more civilians. I think you can see in Israel / Palistine what happens if fundamentalists on both sides work together to create a stable environment of mutual violence.
Also I care about the next generation of immigrants which has not been radicalized yet, and where we should try to help then integrat -

Ab+'s a 128-151mb memory hog http://cdn.ghacks.net/wp-conte... (hosts use 3-11mb w/ my program initially). Even FireFox 41 adblock eats 65++mb http://www.ghacks.net/2015/06/...
---
ClarityRay defeats it seeing addons used via native browser methods!
---
Ab+'s bribed not to work by default http://www.businessinsider.com... & ABP bought out adblock http://www.theregister.co.uk/2...
---
Ab+ adds complexity in slower usermode (w/ more messagepassing overhead + context switch vs. hosts in kernelmode).

AdBlock's SLOWER vs. hosts: http://superuser.com/questions...

Re:Why
Fortunately for them, they're up against politically correct pussies in most cases, which means they can take advantage of things like massive movements of immigrants over-running Europe to place thousands of hardcore fighters right where they want them, complete with free housing and food while they gear up.
Or, most importantly, they're up against politically correct government that cannot, because morality of well-developed countries, use their full wrath to punish and exact revenge to those infidel killing our good citizen (aka nuking the shit out of them).
That may be why some dumbass like Trump are leading in presidency those day : http://www.businessinsider.com...

Meanwhile: Corporate profits just hit All Time Hig
... while corporate wages keep hitting All Time Low
How can the same "cure" that's depressing the economy do anything but continue the same trend?
