Re:Porn is everything's killer app
Yep, and the "Netflix of Porn" SugarDVD announced that in December, PS4 users watched 3 times as much porn as Xbox One users. While they anticipate more viewing through the Xbox One later on (perhaps it's the "family friendly" advertising on the Xbox One versus the "hardcore gamer" marketing of the PS4 for the difference) as it matures as a media gateway, the initial results are in.
PS4 is the porn machine to get! Heck, weren't there PS4 twitch streams that were full of porn as well?

Re:Calories!
Google for "calories per dollar". Most of the foods at the top of the list are junk like fast-food burgers and pizza.
I assume you mean a list like this one. You need to do deeper analysis.
Oatmeal: 937 calories/dollar
Potato: 652 calories/dollar
Rice: 416 calories/dollar
Eggs: 492 calories/dollar
If a person wants to eat well, cheaply, they can.The typical EBT recipient is not even likely to make the leap of logic to google for "calories per dollar" or think about healthy food.
That is a more serious problem. We need to do something to teach them how to eat better.

Re:Bad call
Yes, how "evil" is defined is the core issue with this argument. It projects a notion of a "good" with no arguably "bad" attributes at all. Our reality is not like that--one could say that living itself is "evil" because the first thing you have to do is open your eyes (which takes a non-zero amount of arguably "bad" effort) and get out of bed. The best counterargument seems to be to ask for a description of this world with nothing "evil" whatsoever in it, and when they can't even offer a broad-brush conjecture as to what such an existence would be like, note that most likely, they simply have no valid concept of "good" and "evil" to stipulate for discussion. Certainly not an objectively-demonstrable one that can be used as a yardstick by which to measure a proposed divine being by.
Ironically, I think I may have run across an almost ideal example of this surfing randomly earlier today. Justine Sacco's Twitter misadventure.. Upon initial look, what she communicated would likely be evaluated as purely evil, with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Yet, ultimately the outrage from this resulted in millions of dollars going to AIDS charities. So, was this occurrence, from an objective perspective, ultimately "good", or "evil"? We make a rather large presumption if we conclude, with our limited perceptual range, that we can say what "good" or "evil" are in an absolute sense. And without being able to define and use these terms in an absolute sense, the "Problem of Evil" argument falls apart entirely.

Re:Another Case of Poe's Law?
Eh, it looks like she's done this before. I think the real difference is that her customers have higher expectations and are a lot more delicate than Duck Dynasty viewers.
-
Re:Another Case of Poe's Law?
Her apology pretty much says it right there: "a needless and careless tweet". If it was "darkly ironic" etc etc it wouldn't be "needless and careless".
She's (was) a PR exec - writing heartfelt apologies is part of her job description. Then again, so is not creating PR disasters for her employer (which this was, even if it was indeed meant as a deep commentary on the lot of poor South Africans), so YMMV I suppose. Anyway, I find it hard to believe this was anything deep and meaningful with a history like this:

Re:Some people...
Responding to an OT thread I realized, but... As a parent I always tried to regulate and monitor what my kid watched when he was younger. Interesting fact follows.
There was a Comedy Central kid show called "Power Puff Girls". While watching an episode of that show, they zoom on on the secretaries drive way.. kind of like a camera walking up the road, into the driveway, then into the house. I noticed that address of Ms. Sara Bellum was 69 Yodelinda Valley Lane."
In this case, I was not very offended. It was an obscure reference that a kid would not get. As is some of the other humor from the show you can find here. IMHO, there are some things done to make shows amusing for adults and kids. This differs from the penises and word sex in many Disney shows, at least to me.

Fogetten the "Sooner"
Yeah OK. Here's what Android looked like before the iPhone.
http://blog.steventroughtonsmith.com/2012/05/2007s-pre-m3-version-of-android-google.html Google has lots of prototypes including the full screen Sooner. In fact the iPhone is based unashamedly on this Sony prototype http://www.buzzfeed.com/mattbuchanan/the-original-iphone-4-design-prototype-from-2006 .
The bottom line is Android had full screen phones before the iPhone launch, and it was hardly alone.

Re:There ain't no such thing as a free lunch
Google shut down Google reader because, while it had a lot of loyal users, said users weren't making any revenue for Google. The reason why no one else is stepping up to plate to provide a free easy to use RSS reader thingy is because there just isn't any money in it.
Do you know this for a fact, or are you just assuming? I've heard from more than one source that the reason it was shut down was that no-one wanted to work on it because it was out of favour with Brin and Page, and wasting time and energy on it wasn't going to benefit their career or position within Google.

Re:Simple solution to this BS debate
What's idiotic about those comparisons?
Everything. Again, see the link.
They all involve redefining marriage to include the unnatural, some more extreme than others.
More unnatural than getting it on with your son? A table condiment? "Marrying" the girl you just raped who's land you've invaded? Knocking up your sister-in-law because your brother died before they had kids? With your 700 wives and 300 concubines?
but I wouldn't call it idiotic -- the argument has merit
The argument is asinine. None of the problems of polygamy - see again the lost boys - have anything to do with what people do in the privacy of their bedrooms. Polygamy inherently devalues women and prevents poor men from having families of their own. And homosexuals wont be free to engage in polygamy either, so WYFP again?
Or are you trying to claim permanent homosexual coupling is not unnatural? Nature certainly disagrees
Oh, it certainly does - with you. Long term homosexual relationships have been observed in everything from penguins to flamingos.
This is the same bigotry that banned inter-racial marriage. Same bigoted BS, different pile.
-
Re:Simple solution to this BS debate
Great, I assume we'll see your support for overturning 100+ years of discrimination against polygamists and the restoration (with interest) of the properties confiscated from them by the state and federal governments?
Great, but where's the equally idiotic comparisons to marrying your toaster, your dog, or a 10 year kid?
Same-sex marriage has jack and shit to do with polygamy, and Jack left town. Anyone who thinks otherwise needs to read up on lost boys and get back to us with a relevant comparison.

Re:What's the point of this?
How about all the women on twitter and facebook after Chris Brown beat the ever loving shit out of Rihanna and they were running around saying they'd let him beat the hell out of them? And attacking *her* for being beat up by him? That was pretty sickening shit. I didn't see any defense force out for that.
Pretty hideous shit, but it seems better to just let people be hideous so everyone else can have a platform to respond to them, which in turn emphasizes just how stupid the original hideous comments *are*.
Anyway . . .

Re:Waste of money
half? all.
The DHS needs to go, the TSA needs to go along with it as well as the other bloat in the government.
As of 3/2001 there were 2,697,602 employees in the Federal Government (682K National Defense/Relations) with a monthly payroll of $11.4B/month.
As of 3/2011 (latest month available) there were 2,854,251 federal employees not including 192,845 in the DHS (including Coast Guard/TSA etc.) For a total of 3,047,096 with a monthly payroll of $17.2B/month. That's a 13% increase in personnel and a payroll increase of 50% in 10 years despite having gone through the worst recession in memory. I'm trying to think if my income has gone up 50% in the last 10 years. Wait, no, it hasn't I'm sure of it.True, if I looked at all of those engineers and technicians layed-off at NASA because of the Shuttle shutdown these numbers would be a little less but still it's mind boggling how big the bureacracy has grown. A lot of that was under Bush but a lot was under Obama as well. I won't get into their productive value on the economy but in order to solve the problems we have with government bloat is to vote out all members of congress over the next three election cycles. Why? It's the only way to clean house and get some new people in there who don't behold to old party alliances and financial backers who push legislation through the side door. After all, the president has no spending authority, it comes from congress. The president can move funds around once he has them, but the checkbook is in the hands of guys like this. or this, or this. Frankly, I could point to any member of congress and see that their self-indulgent morons who have one goal: to maintain power and get re-elected and fuck the rest of the people in the country.

Why not make the screen bigger?
Since it seems people are demanding bigger and bigger screens (heck, The day phones were bigger than penises came a month ahead of schedule), this seems to be a technology looking for a reason to exist - given the popularity of big screen phones (and the Galaxy Mega is no slouch) and how people seem to want bigger screen phones, it seems the problem will solve itself naturally. Well before it starts appearing in products, anyhow.

Re:Yeah Right
4. The argument for gun control is childish at best: "daddy maybe if we make the guns go away no one will kill one another anymore".
The problem with this childish argument is that it is supported by evidence. You can't just label it "childish" and hope it would dissappear. Look at this stats: http://www.buzzfeed.com/bookofodds/who-is-most-likely-to-murder-you-1dx6 and see, that most people likely to murder you have easy access to your guns, be them acquaintances, girlfriends, boyfriends, parents, children or spouses.
Given, that 60% percent of gun related deaths are suicides, it looks as if having a gun is dangerous mainly to yourself and your close environment more than to everyone else. Not having a gun in your environment will thus lower your chance of dying by firearms down to slightly more than 1/20 (1,600 deaths vs. 31,000).

Re:Modular systems on Navy ships
Basically, they want the ship to have a huge amount of electrical generation capacity onboard, then multiple redundant busses to route the power all over.
Only one technology can deliver that: Nuclear power.
If they have multiple generators as well as multiple redundant busses the ships might not have any single spot where damage could put the ship out of commission.
No, but the ship now has a whole lot of places that, if hit, would cause radiation to spew out. Carriers are themselves small floating towns, and in a combat situation may only be a hundred miles or so from a major population center. You're now in a situation where, if one of the reactors was exposed, you may have to scuttle the ship in order to prevent an even greater ecological catastrophe.
Railguns and lasers also have the nice property that they don't explode when hit.
The gun itself, perhaps not. But the equipment it's attached to can go off like a bomb if it shorts out.
Let's just hope they don't use Windows 8 for the power management computers.
They use Windows NT. No, I'm serious. Many of our nuclear-power facilities on these ships are still running old versions of windows. However, with only one notable exception during a shakedown cruise, its use hasn't caused any operational difficulties.
The reason why they want large amounts of power and energy weapons is not because they're worried about running out of ammo. It's because it makes logistical sense given that the carrier is developing into its own mobile, floating, military base. The aircraft launching systems and amount of electronics equipment requires staggering amounts of electricity. Because of this, it's natural to simply extend that capability and develop laser and railgun systems because there's already a huge need for electricity so from a logistical standpoint, there are benefits.
But these weapons are no less dangerous than a room full of conventional ammunition -- large amounts of electrical equipment failing in a contained area can wreak devastation far in excess of what a torpedo could do.

Google self-censored Wash. DC and other sites
Google has self-censored sites in the Washington, D.C., area and other areas of military and national security interest at the request of the USA government. It's blurred the regions or limited the resolution at which users can scan the areas, such as Fort Knox or the Naval Observatory a.k.a. the Vice-President's Residence. It's also done that for China and India, South Korea, Australia, and others (I think) at those government's requests also. http://www.google.com/transparencyreport/removals/government the name of that link speaks for itself

Scientology is fading
I cam across this very long, very interesting story about Scientology last night which details how with diminishing membership, it is trying to squeeze the very last dime out of those remaining and accelerating its die-off.
http://www.buzzfeed.com/alexklein/is-scientology-self-destructing
But inside the church, the Ideal Orgs are sparking insurrection. Across the country, donors and high-ranking executives say that the aggressive fundraising and construction scheme is used to enrich the central church at the expense of the rank and file, helping to grow the Scientology war chest to over a billion dollars. Two former members, Mike Rinder and Mark Elliott, went so far as to call the project a "real estate scam." To some of these defectors, the structures are metaphors for the religion itself: garish on the outside, empty on the inside. The irony is that the very expansion that Scientology lauds as its renaissance is actually a symbol of internal dissent and decline.
***
And the ranks of the faithful are dropping. In 2008, there were 25,000 self-identifying American Scientologists, down by over a half from 55,000 in 2001, according to the American Religious Identification Survey. (Over the same time period, the number of Wiccans more than doubled from 134,000 to 342,000.) The 2011 British census showed a total of 2,418 Scientologists across England and Wales; about 73 times as many Brits identified themselves as "Jedi."

Republican Rhetoric and the Blame GameAccording to Buzzfeed Politics http://www.buzzfeed.com/johnstanton/are-these-guys-really-in-charge-of-the-republican
It’s difficult to find a Republican operative who is willing to say on the record that going over the fiscal cliff next Tuesday is a good idea. Provoking a crisis is bad politics: Republicans are resigned to taking the blame. And it’s bad for their policy agenda: They will likely be cornered into a broader tax hike than the best deal they could get from President Barack Obama today, and with none of the spending cuts that might now be on the table.
And yet, the dominant emotion among most Republicans here is one of sheer resignation.
“It’s a shit show,” one prominent Republican told BuzzFeed of the GOP’s messaging position. “Tax rates are going to go up on everyone, and we’re going to get the blame.”
The Republicans are being screwed by their own rhetoric. They always say the government is useless, and they want to get rid of it. There are many influential Republicans, Grover Norquist being the most prominent, who actually want a government collapse. They call it "starve the beast."
So when there is an economic crises like this, the Republicans are going to get the blame. They are always trash talking government, so when things go bad the public automatically assumes the Republicans are at fault. People listen to what they say, and they take them at their word. Everyone knows Democrats are pro-government and Republicans are ant-government. QED.
So, irrespective of who is really at fault (whatever that means), the Republicans loose the public relations battle due to their decades long record of negative opinions. This should not be a surprise, but they never seem to make the connection. They react by being bitter and pissed off, even when they cause much of their own problems. It's really pathetic. They should know better by now.

A few months back (August 2012), Cassian Elwes (an independent film producer) posted a series of tweets about his interaction with a distraught veteran on a flight from New York to Los Angeles. (Sorry for the Buzzfeed link, it came from MetaFilter, I swear!)
While it's not Pulitzer-level journalism, the story does emerge reasonably well from Elwes's tweets.

Yes, there were experiments as early as 1910 with the Pennsylvania. but that couldn't be considered a carrier by the modern sense. If somebody says though they were developed in WWI, they're off by a few years because earlier designs could also be argued as being a carrier.

My thoughts exactly. I would be more intersted in a plank that promised net neutrality rather than protecting users data.
If that's what you want, don't expect it to come from Ron/Rand Paul. They consider "Net Neutrality" to be "internet collectivism. They don't want the government to have any part in regulating the internet.
What interests me most about their paper is how much they seem to rely on appeal to authority. They quote Reagan, and since he said it, it must be true. They quote Von Mises as an authority not to be doubted. They give authorities, not reasons, to back up their opinions. (yes, they do give some reasons too, but not enough to really establish their case). -
