A fascinating analogy. I challenge you to demonstrate its meaningfulness with regard to software development. Further interesting is that you don't seem to know what planned obsolescence is. It has nothing to do with anything actually being obsolete. As pertains to software, it's a method of forcing consumers to buy new stuff by making the old stuff not work, either technologically or through opressive licensing.

But since we're on the subject of Microsoft(tm), explain how something like this is not planned obsolescence.

From a story today about DoS attacks against RIAA:
"Don't they have something better to do during the summer than hack our site?" asked the RIAA representative, who asked not to be identified. "Perhaps it at least took 10 minutes away from stealing music."

The legislation's single purpose is to give more power to corporations to punish anyone they think may be doing something illegal. And obviously, they think everyone is really stealing from them.

Granted, this isn't as much about punishment as such. Instead, it is about Denial of Service attacks made legal. These people want to prevent others from distributing digital content - even their own work! They want to be able to be in a position where they can decide whether or not a crime is being committed. And, as we can see from what these people are saying, we are all really criminals, and therefore, they need the power to prevent us from connecting to the network. After all, if we can connect, we will probably steal "their" music. What is "reasonable suspicion"? These people seem to think that they have a "reasonable suspicion" against just about anyone.

It is obvious that the bill is a pathetic attempt at limiting our rights. It is not about preventing piracy, it is about preventing us from doing anything without it resulting in income to the huge corporations that are trying to take over.

The other 4 accounting firms also have consulting divisions, that are in various stages of separation from the parent auditing company. Ernst & Young is still together, PWC is obviously spliting now, KPMG apears to still be part of the audit firm, and Delotte & Touche is also still together, I believe.

PwC is now getting rid of their consultants, and have been trying to for a number of years now.

Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu (or D&T in the US), has renamed their consulting unit Braxton Consulting, and is either going to spin them off or sell them off at some point.

KPMG spun off their consulting unit, the unoriginally named KPMG Consulting. (KCIN is their ticket symbol).

As you did get right, Anderson and Anderson Consulting split quite a while ago... mostly over how to split up the profits in the firm. For a while there you would get proposals from both Andersen's Consulting unit and Andersen Consulting, and they'd actually fight over the work... AC had to drop the Andersen name and pay $1 Billion to Andersen as part of the settlement. I'm sure looking back its the best Billion dollars they've ever spent.

Basically accountants can't be in the consulting business anymore -- clients don't want to deal with the appearance that there might be something sketchy going on, and the law recently makes it pretty much impossible for them to do so anyway in wake of the Enron fiasco (not that there is any evidence that accounting/consulting ties had anything to do with it). They were good cash cows back in the day of the multi-year multi-million dollar ERP implementations...

1) User can attach any attribute to any file, and query on those attributes. This includes joins, etc.

2) The desktop can do queries too. Want something like Lifestreams? Sort by date, across your entire filesystem.

3) Apps can do it too. Suppose the office suite stored everything this way...emails have attributes like date, to, from, subject...but this way your emails aren't in their own little island, you can search them from your desktop, or from other apps. You can assign them to projects, and pull up a project with all associated emails. Or assign people ot projects, and pull up all emails to people associated with the project. Etc.

Microsoft is working on something like this, and if they pull it off, they'll eat everyone's lunch. But they have to deal with a huge installed base, IT people tired of paying upgrades, etc. I don't know how far along Hans Reiser is with his vision, but if he can pull it off, that'd be a perfect foundation...build a special version of KDE or Gnome on top of it, change the file formats of an open-source office suite to use it, and we can beat MS to the punch, with a drastically better user interface...not better because it's prettier, or feels better, but because it does more.

And that's even if it makes it past CNET or ZDNET and into the mainstream press, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, L.A. Times, etc. more of the people who vote still read newspapers and watch news programs for their news, so they'll read a pro-RIAA spin and agree with them.

Yikes! I'm not sure how to change the views of the general public, but I know that I already wrote my congressmen to let them know how I feel from a professional and personal level. Will that change my congressmen's point-of-view? Maybe not, but at least they know how one of their constituents feel, just like how the democratic process is suppose to work.

Four - nVidia acquires exluna and uses a modified version of BMRT/Entropy to shade using nVidia hardware. They render images from previous image contests where the artists gave up ownership and had to submit the source files to prove the images were done with their software.

I'm sure nVidia and exluna have been working together on this for a while.

The guys at nVidia have some technology that translates RenderMan to something they know how to render.

I'd appreciate it if they fessed up and reported that they make a RenderMan renderer. I actually think that's bigger news than their exact hardware specs. It means "One interface to rule them all..."

I hate this news just as much as anyone else, but your example is fairly poor in light of their company profile.
