Re:I'm pretty sure...
Others have mentioned that he was referring to Phase IV. I'd like to point out that there was a great MST3K done on that movie. One of my favorites at least.

Wanna catch up with old MST3K episodes?
Wanna see what all the MST3K fuss is about? Old episodes (just about all of them, except for those that are commercially available) can be found at the Digital Archive Project. Old episodes of the show encouraged viewers to "keep circulating the tapes", and the DAP guys are doing just that. For legal purposes they pull down any episodes whenever Rhino decides to package and sell them, but otherwise, just about everything is there.
Most episodes were encoded years ago in MPEG4 format, but there's an impressive (and growing) number available in higher quality DVD format.

Re:Rifftrax
I was thinking the exact same thing, then I thought, "Wait! This is a doup!" But a little checking around would seem to show that they indeed are, all three, united in a new project. They've been The Film Crew for a while, but they seem to be jumping in on actual DVD releases now as we can see on The Film Crew's website the link for which seems to be missing in the article. Still, though, this is pretty old news. I remember voting for my 'first release' several months, if not a year, back. That could've been which to riff first I suppose, though.

Youtube as a video archive...
Although the faint hope of commercial value in many television properties does give some television shows some guarantee it will be around for future folks to look at (including historians), I think it is also important that the banal and the "so-common-as-to-be-worthless" content get it's shot at archival also. I think Youtube is somewhat important - it looks to be strong enough to survive until digital storage is cheap enough that our current processes of digital archival are made irrelevant. It's important, because although there are groups like the Digital Archive Project, Archive.org, and the various file trading groups which keep a lot of content alive long term, none of these have as strong a hope of legally keeping their information freely available, or have the same mass of content that Youtube/Google can provide.
It may seem rather silly to keep ahold of some of this stuff - but even if you'd never even dream of spending the time to watch any of it, I believe that our increasing ability to find new ways of consuming content and searching through it will bring surprising value, even as the value of content itself continues to fall. Youtube increases this aggregate historical value still further by also having a (youth and nerd-oriented) snapshot of a wide variety of daily lives around the world.

It was "20 minutes into the future", and you can download the whole thing at DAP central. Make sure you read the FAQ, and don't piss off Queued. -
MST3K!
Let me just say how happy I am that "Mystery Science Theater 3000" made the top 10. It was, and still is, my favorite TV show of all time, and I've felt that it's always been underappreciated. I always thought it was brilliant. Hopefully though, thanks to efforts like the MST3K Digital Archive Project, it will have some life for some time. Also, there's quite a few torrents available.

I can't remember what Best Brain's take on that project was, but I believe they got fairly enthusiastic support from MST3K luminaries like Kevin Murphy. The project leaders were very careful not to make available any episode that was available for purchase through Rhino Recordings.

Further information
1. Mister Sinus is in the wrong, period. It's perfectly okay to make fun of movies in the Mystery Science style, but it's not okay to rip off their name. Maybe it would be if this were parody, but the thing being parodied is not MST, it's the movies, so that defense will probably collapse. To the guy who said Mister Sinus, in terms of quality, "kicks MST to the curb," I have to respond: I seriously doubt it.
2. The Mystery Science style has been seen in a non-MST DVD before. Take a look at the director's commentary on Ghostbusters some day. Rather slick, if jittery.
3. Best Brains has implied that copying episodes is okay, with "Keep circulating the tapes" in the credits of earlier episodes. Kevin Murphy, voice of Tom Servo and author of A Year At The Movies (which is GREAT, by the way) has condoned internet episode distribution in an interview (but it should be said that he is no longer a Best Brains employee, and wasn't one when he said it). But most fans, and distribution systems such as the DAP, refuse to trade episodes that can currently be purchsed. There are almost ten times as many episodes that aren't available as are, and some of the best ones (like the Gamera series and the other Japanese movies brought to the US by Sandy Frank Enterprises) will probably never be made available for official purchase because of rights issues surrounding the movie.
But there is one really cool thing about all this: MST3K still has the cultural mindshare, among geeks at least, to make the front page on Slashdot! Cause for some celebration, perhaps. -
Interesting
that they are suing over this, but have given their blessings to The Digital Archive Project which encodes and shares the shows that were not released commerically on DVD.
I remember a quote from Kevin Murphy(one of the few founding members of the show to stay with it the whole time) "Ideas are free my friend" -
that's just wrong
well, whether it's legal or not, it certainly seems unethical.
It reminds me of the mid-nineties, when some company produced a sticker of the likeness of "Calvin" of the Calvin and Hobbes comic strips pissing on various logos. I found this to be an offense to the innocence and family appeal of the original comic strip character.
on a side note: It took me almost my entire last year at school, but I managed to download all of the Episodes of MST3K on eMule. Just in case any of you fans were wondering, All but about ten of the episodes are in public domain now. For details go here: To check what titles are legally downloadable go here: -
Re:MST3K AnythingIf you haven't seen MST3K, do so now. Seriously. You can download pretty much all the episodes from The Digital Archive Project.
Just make sure you read the faqs and set up eDonkey right, or you'll get banned.

I'm a bad movie veteran...
I should have a vote in this.
MST3k:
Girl in gold boots: Randomly in the middle of the movie, they go to a beach (near my house!) and ride a 6 wheeled "buggy"... then back to the movie. why is it in there? who knows.
Wild wild world of batwoman: *shudder* a super group of females, with such fine plot twists as an atomic powered hearing aid, a potion that makes people dance, and... pain. Lots of pain. for the viewers, not the people in the movie.
Gamera: "Gamera is fun to meet, he is made of turtle meat, we believe in gamera!!! (Did you know he is friend to all children?" Big flying turtle. Takes out Kyoto or Tokyo or something.
Sidehackers: Something about riding a motorcycle with a sidecar, trying to popularize it as a sport. I don't think I ever finished it sober--man is it bad.
Manos: Quite probably the worst movie ever made. I love it. There's an interview out there somewhere with the guy who plays torgo (I thought). can't find it, but well worth reading. FYI, two or three people committed suicide within a couple years after the movie was finished-- and the guy who wrote it went back to being a fertilizer sales person, IIRC.
Red Zone Cuba: Just bad. I can't finish it. even when drunk.
Touch of Satan: "It looks like everyone is burning grandmas today"
GOOD MST3k
Pod people: "Trumpy, you can do stupid things"
War of the Colossal beast-- A must watch (just for the short Mr. B. Natural)
Space Mutiny: I don't know many MST3k fans who won't put space mutiny in their top 3 favorites.
Beginning of the end: "I'm peter graves"... and crickets on post cards. a truly excruciating episode. well worth watching
Most of those are available on DVD. I highly recommend anything in season 8 for new people to MST3k. Some are available online. You can check out the DAP for more info.
as for non-mst3k bad movies... let look through my dvd collection first.
Death Race 2000: Sylvester Stallone and a bunch of other people race across the country in horribly dumb looking vehicles, trying to kill as many people as possible.
Bubba Ho Tep: I enjoy this movie immensely, but everyone else says it sucks. listen to the commentary, and it'll be a lot better (but watch it once first).
Gigli: *shudder* I want the 600 megs of download back.
Gor: *shudder*. MST3k did an ep called Outlaw or something like that, which is the sequal to this. somehow a friend of mine got the original... *shudder* it burned.
escape from NY: it's bad, but in a good way!
Escape from LA: It's bad, but in a bad way!
Cruel intentions 2: If I had to pick a worst movie ever, it's probably this. (note, I don't own this, I turned on the tv one night, and turned my back on it, and realized that this was on about 3/4 of the way through it.
So to sum it up:
worst MST3k: Girl in the gold boots.
worst non-mst3k: Cruel intentions 2
(this is just a small sampling, I've seen 80 of the IMDB worst, and almost every single MST3k... some of them are bad, I just don't remember them as it's been a couple years since I collected 'em all) /Ex -
Re:DRM doesn't happen at the codec level
check out dapcentral.org. link
they use xvid as their codec of choice to preserve old tv shows that might never see the light of dvd. -
Another good site for cancelled comedies/toons
One site they forgot to mention was Digital Archive Project. They use a P2P community for the legal trading of cancelled shows. They're very good about removing things that go to video or are otherwise re-sold. It's kinda nice to see someone using P2P for something legal and worthwhile. Lots of animated series, comedy shows, and sci-fi/fantasy series. (the. Worth a click.

Re:it must be a scam!
Welcome to 20 minutes in to the future.
(Max Headroom reference: basically MH is set in the near future where it's illegal to turn off your television set, elections are run for and controlled by the television networks and there's this nifty 'not really' computer generated TV presenter).
Bring on the Blipverts!
(BTW: Max Headroom can be downloaded, along with MST3K episodes from DAPCentral) -
Re:Won't Happen Again
"In this new digital age where lots of people collect every episode of their favorite TV shows we won't have to worry about this again. Long live P2P."
MST3k is living on this way. Since the Comedy Central episodes aren't being re-aired, and few of them are making it to DVD, people have taken it upon themselves to digitize whatever episodes they can get ahold of and put them on P2P. The project is called the MST3K "Digital Archive Project".
If anybody ever needed a reason to use a home-brew PC as a PVR as opposed to a TiVo, this is it. -
Quality?...
I've seen projects like this (Digital Archive Project) where people recover old shows and release them, but does anyone know where they found this "lost" episode? A recorded tape? An old master somewhere? It would be interesting to see the quality of it when it gets released in comparison to the other "non-lost" episodes. Also would be very interesting to hear the whole story of this episode... how it got lost, where they found it, how they updated it. Maybe a good idea for a book.

Re:Interesting concept...
Not the OP, but the statement applies to me just as well.
Perhaps your job consists of sitting behind a computer for 8 hours. Mine doesn't. I find computers enjoyable, and as such they have pretty much supplanted other forms of (non social) entertainment. Coding for fun, playing with the network, that sort of shit. I use my tv as a second monitor more often than as a tv, and when I do watch something on it, it's usually a downloaded MST3K (check out DapCentral for all the cheese you need.) So I pretty easily average 5x more time on linux than on windows. And the stuff I do on linux is far more unixy than my windows stuff is windowsy. Browsing the web, word processing, and pdf reading are pretty much the same whatever platform you're on. So lets be more careful who we call retards, ok? -
It has possibility...I must admit, I wasn't too impressed with the new Star Wars movies, but a cartoon spinoff could be interesting. I recently saw Tartakovsky interviewed on a VH1 Special about "prime time" cartoons, so I checked out a few episodes of Samurai Jack.
Tartakovsky definately has a passion for action (yep, that's what the VH1 show said [repeatedly]). My best example is this: just listen to an episode of Samurai Jack and hear how much of it is dialogue, and how much is noises (slash, grunt) and music? (I think the split's around 25/75). Tartakovsky's action is not only constant, but it's fun to watch -- it's beautiful eye candy. Colorful, animated, comedic at times. (so don't just listen to that episode, watch it, too!).
However, I'm an English major; when I notice a weak plot or a missing link, I get the subconscious "yellow flag." Jack's weak on plotline. Episodes are usually strung together with lots of action revolving around a weak premise. It's fun to watch, but not fun to get involved in.
But Star Wars, on the other hand, is.
;) The animation itself should be good, but the storyline is going to need some good writers. I think here is where we'll see whether this is just a Marketing-schemed Animatrix-clone, or a quality investment.(Oh, and PLEASE resist the temptation to spinoff Clone Wars:2021)

Just curious if "Bizarro world" is a reference to Sealab 2021? And if so, you should check out http://www.dapcentral.org/ If not, please disregard this posting

Other capture/conversion resources...
I got started by reading the excellent guides at doom9.org. They mostly describe how to rip DVDs, but you can also learn a lot about video conversion in the process.
There are also some good tutorials and forum information at the Digital Archive Project and Luke's Video Guide.

Re:MPEG?
From what I've seen, the quality of the MPEG has a lot to do with specific settings and filters. I've seen some *really bad* MPEGs of, say, Invader Zim floating around the net, and then I've seen some really good ones. (I mean image quality, feel free to have your own opinion of the content, but don't waste our time ranting about it here).

Re:They chose well...
I recognize the following as MST3K fodder (I'm excluding ones mentioned above in this thread):
Wild World of Batwoman
Monster a-Go Go
Eegah ("Watch out for snakes!")
Hellcats (gives Manos a run for its money)
I Accuse My Parents ("I was torn from the thigh of Zeus!")
Also, according to Amazon.com, there are quite a few MST3K episodes on DVD. Here they are:
Eegah
Beginning of the End
Wild World of Batwoman
The Brain That Wouldn't Die
The Movie (This Island Earth)
For those of you who are in to the tape trading, I've found an even better resource: the MST3K Digital Archive Project (MST3K-DAP). This is an effort to encode every non-Rhino release digitally.
