Actually Wally gives a much better lesson
The Wisdom of Wally clearly illustrates the difference between trust and stupidity.

Because at best, they're like Mordac
Mordac, preventer of information services.
At worst, they're, well, worse.
My "favorite" IT story has our development team halfway across the world, needing access to a system in our DMZ from the customer's system. The IT team flat out refused to do it, citing "security". My boss had one of the dev people back in the US literally bypass them with an unauthorized Ethernet connection.
My second favorite involves a customer IT department who insisted on installing a broken anti-virus product on a VM I needed to work on, and then not being available to fix it. They were very unhappy when I managed to kill it (making the system usable again; it was trying to contact a server it had no path to, and using most of its cpu time doing it), especially when they realized they couldn't even credibly threaten me for doing it.

Re:Not new
But this isn't the first time it's been done with a smartphone. People were making little robots with Android G1 phones a while back using the headphone jack adapter. Is this somehow novel because it was done with an iPhone?
Of course not, beyond the fact that the Android G1 wasn't as media friendly as the iPhone... Android G1, sounds like an obscure geek toy (even though it's not, really). iPhone, well, that's accessible, isn't it? Even my acquaintances in marketing have iPhones, and know how to install apps on them too.
I feel the same way when people get excited about a project because "it's so accessible, it's on an Arduino."

Re:Cue Kurzweil...
I was four in 1971... you could still get lead in your gasoline, you could dream of being an astronaut when you grew up, you could imagine surviving an all out thermonuclear war, jet travel was still expensive for most people, and nobody had the faintest idea what caused ulcers...
I mentioned Kurzweil mostly because he's pushing the idea that, due to exponential progress, people will live forever, real soon now. He is kinda quiet about how much money (power, whatever) you're going to need to do it. Personally, I think this sums up the future a little better:

Re:And nothing about rape in it?
You're an idiot. In no frame of reference does Scott ever allude to such a thing. I'm sure you're referring to the backlash from his Pegs and Holes article where various parties chose to misconstrue what he said in pursuit of they're own agenda. You're just another jerk trying to use an ad hominem attack instead of presenting a valid argument.

Re:Random is as random does
Q2.1: How can you be sure the numbers are really random?
Oddly enough, it is theoretically impossible to prove that a random number generator is really random.
-
Re:Random
The imperfections in music aren't perfectly random either, so what's the big deal?

Dilbert as CEO?
I think Scott Adams pretty much covered this all the way back in 1991... The week of November 4th thru November 11th to be specific. I guess now we get to watch and see if reality imitates art, yet again...

Re:Slashdot is posting blatant scams now?
Well, the odds this "technology demonstration" will work out is only 1 in ten million less than the odds of hitting the Powerball.

Dutch sandwich
I like Scott Adam's take:

Information from Wikipedia:

It's quite common, and is done by a *lot* of companies

Re:why?
Rather than merely Stop Posting (or paying for a domain), and instead actually putting the effort to remove one's creations is something which is both strange and uncommon on the internet. I never used anything he wrote (that I know of?), but am immensely curious as to what would cause a person to do this. It's VERY different from retiring an old machine or deciding that you don't care about a domain anymore enough to actually update its DNS (or pay for it, perhaps).
Perhaps he's had enough of wasting his life over HTML specifications, or writing yet another book about a 20 year old programming language. Perhaps he has bigger priorities, such as raising his family, or preparing for key resource depletion that is occurring as we "chit chat". Maybe he's decided that the Internet has devolved into a steaming pile of weasel shit used by ruthless people to con the masses out of their privacy in exchange for a quick buck.
PS. Like that nice reverse-trolling in the first link? Notice the fine print in the header when you visit it?

Switched to WP7 from iPhone 4, Still enjoying WP7
Scott Adams likes WP7 more than iOS and Android. http://dilbert.com/blog/entry/windows_phone_challenge/ I think slowly it will catch on and will certainly be the #3 player in the mobile space. Maybe #2 eventually. They also made the marketplace available on the web so you can push apps to your phone. In addition to skydrive storage, find my phone, etc... that has been there since launch. http://www.windowsphone.com/en-US/marketplace

Re:One hour a day? I wish!
Seriously, though - what's with the "getting dressed for the day was far too strenuous" tripe? I wear sweats or shorts when I work from home - so what? What's wrong with being comfortable?
