Television
The Discovery Science channel is running a special, "Venus Unveiled", about the planet and this ESA program. It airs several times during the next 2 weeks.

Your skin IS melting
Can't we just put this "volcanoes are the problem" urban legend to rest once and for all?
I can't wait to see how MythBusters does this one!Jamie: "We've recreated a volcano here in our workshop."
Adam: "We're now going to see how high Buster will be launched when the volcano erupts."
Both: "The pain, the pain!" (as a flaming buster lands on them)

hmm
Not to stray too far off topic, but didn't all this 'boot camp' crap start when cable channels like Discovery began airing stuff like this and 30yo adolescents far and wide thought that one Hell Week of any sort and they could be Authorized Bad-Ass Certified Hacker Ninjas?
"Yeah (sniff), I coulda been a F-16 pilot, but I couldn't pass the vision screening, so I became an MCSE instead."

Re:The horror!
Not that I believe in the whole TFH/MCR thing but please use proper scientific procedures when debunking "pseudoscience". Otherwise you will just give them more to be paranoid about.
Why not ask the Mythbusters? -
Re:hmm... no
The chances of it existing? -12.4% Center of this planet must solidify first.
Don't know which planet you're living on, but the centre of planet Earth is actually solid.

Another article on the subject....
I don't think the article on the Discovery Channel website has any more information, but it does have my favorite quote on the subject..."In a typical reaction, he can make about 50 billion Smiley faces. I think this is the most concentrated happiness ever created."
-
Re:Oh!
Actually to be slightly more precise, albeit less humorous, "They're like your average Mammal then?". I know slashdot has run a few articles on it and what not; here's a brief synopsis from the Discovery Channel..

Re:Marriage is a scam
A great example of how correlation is not causation.
There IS a correlation. Whether this is caused by being married, I don't know. It's not that correlative indices are NEVER causally related, just that they are NOT NECESSARILY causally related. I haven't read the book, and know nothing about their research. But, "studies found that married people have these benefits" seems to have a pretty clear message that a healthy marriage is NOT all bad.
What about the hypothesis that couples smart enough and happy enough to have long, successful marriages tend to be successful at other things as well, like budgeting and having a healthy lifestyle?
That seems like a reasonable hypothesis. But, how would you test it? How do you know if someone is "smart enough/happy enough" to have a long, successful marriage, if they are not married? I can't even begin to imagine how one would conduct an experiment to verify or falsify this hypothesis.
how about the hypthesis that it's much easier to have a successful marriage when you're rich, healthy, and sexually compatible? Of course, that would ruin your magical fantasy because it implies that a successful marriage is a result - not the cause - of the factors you listed.
Thank you for referring to this as "my magical fantasy" -- that really added to the argument. ;-)
As for the hypothesis -- of course it seems that it would be easier to have a successful marriage if you're rich, healthy, etc. However, there are many that are rich, healthy, and sexually compatible (I assume) that have NOT had happy marriages. Again, I'm not sure how one would test this hypothesis.
All you seem to have done is present alternate hypotheses to what the psychologists I mentioned have proposed. You are free to do research and publish your findings when you disprove their work.
I am not saying that they ARE right, merely that they COULD be. Since they have done a lot more research into than I have (I assume, of course -- and I know assuming risks mistaken conclusions), it seems to me that their conclusions may have some weight.
You might be interested in Discovery Health's page on this:
http://health.discovery.com/centers/loverelationsh ips/articles/marriage_myths.html
It just seems that the majority of current research (as far as I can find via easy Google searches, of course ;)) indicates that a commitment to marriage has real, tangible benefits to both parties.
Now, if you're jsut getting married for the tax benefits, or on a "Why not?" basis, and are not willing to put the work in to keep it healthy (because it DOES require work), you are much more likely to have marital problems. So ... yeah. Of course it erquires work, but if you are willing to do so, the benefits are real.
I don't think I have presented "emotional" reasoning -- merely said "hey, several scientists believe this. Maybe it has some merit." -
I smell Mythbusters episode coming up
Could anyone let the Adam and Jamie know about this at Mythbusters and see what happens?
-
Mythbusters...
I am so sending this to them to check out.

Re:Reality?
Survivor Man. The most "realistic" and interesting reality show on TV. It's basically what "Survivor" *should* have been, without the stupid voting or morons with larger chest sizes than IQs.
-
Alternate versions
So what would happen if one of the geek faves, say, Mythbusters was hosted by a man and a woman (cf. Scrapheap Challenge/Junkyard Wars? Or by two women - say, Scottie and Cathy Rogers hosting, while Jamie and Adam do the dirty work.
I suspect people would find the latter scary, and possibly dangerous. Like what happened when they made a movie about two women shooting their way across the west.

These aren't new
I've seen these before, I think they were in fact on TV on the "MythBusters Outtakes" episode. Although I can't find a reference to this episode on the MythBusters website.

Old News
I heard about this quite a while ago.
Besides which, didn't the Mythbusters find that the toilet seat is one of the cleanest surfaces in the house (Episode 39)? -
Quick'n'dirty translation
Quick'n'dirty translation:
###
Recent research shows your keyboard is more dirty than a toilet seat
(2006-01-18 09:20) Do you have some dirt between the keys on your keyboard? Spending a few bucks on a new keyboard might be a good idea. The latest issue of Pc för Alla shows that a keyboard can be a major source for contamination.
By Fredrik Agren
A keyboard holds about 33.000 bacteria per square centimeter - 265 times more than a toilet seat.
The computer magazine PC För Alla has examined what exactly is hiding on a keyboard. The task was assigned to Pegasus Lab, which discovered that every square centimeter contained 3.100 fungees.
Not surprisingly, Enter and Space Bar are the most filthy, as they are the keys we use more frequently.
There are many ways to keep your keyboard clean, but those afraid of catching the flu can follow a simple advice from Smittskyddinstitutets Kerstin Mannerquist:
- Wash your hands when you're done with the computer, she says to PC För Alla.
###
Anyway, remember the findings of Mythbusters?
In the episode Chinese Invasion Alarm episode, while busting the 5 second rule myth, they discovered that the toilet seat is one of the cleanest spots in your house. -
Re:Yellowstone National Park?
I've seen these shows and news items and had the same thoughts.
If this is the case, and all the lava from the supervolcano is draining from afar, it is a far beter outcome that that which the Discovery Channel Supervolcano movie presents.
Although either way FEMA will screw up and Mexico will close its borders to us.

Re:Quality TV will diminish? Huh?
Sadly the networks cannot condone properly taking care of the needs of the end users. That wouldn't be fiscally responsible to their pockets.
To what end? I would think that end users would want to do things "above board", to encourage the advertisers and Discovery Channel to continue producing this show.
Want to watch the shows on your own time, without the need to deal with stupid cable companies for getting Discovery Channel? The show is available on DVD, without commercial interruptions, I'd bet.
If the end user cannot be bothered to give incentive to the people paying for the show to support the show somehow, then the show will slide in quality or go away altogether, and then we'd all lose. -
Re:The big question remained unasked, unanswered..
While I realize that you're just being a jerk, they've actually answered that question in the past.
It's on page 2 of their chat transcript. -
Re:No worries...
A while back, Discovered moved all the good ole' Discovery Channel stuff to the more refined Science Channel. No motorcycles there

Facial problems are the most humiliating of allI watched an amazing show the other day about a boy from Sumatra (?) whose face was being destroyed by a face-eating tumor. I believe this is the correct link:
http://health.discovery.com/tvlistings/series.jsp
? series=109445&gid=0&channel=DHCDescription:
Witness groundbreaking surgery to remove the largest facial tumors ever recorded, giving a five-year-old boy a chance for a normal life. The tumors, caused by a rare congenital disorder called fibrous dysplasia, stem from abnormal bone growth. -
Re:Chicken and Egg.
but just as the Romans couldn't even imagine in their wildest dreams a B2 bomber
Hey, Archimedes built the Solar Death Ray - of course, you probably wouldn't want to send a black bomber against that. Besides, the Romans always manage to take out my bombers, anyway.
Of course, it would have to be a B2 instead of a B1 or any other type of bomber so that it won't be detected by the Romans RADAR. ;-) -
Didn't the US do this first?
I swear I remember seeing this on an episode of "Dirty Jobs" (discovery channel) not too long ago. Some guy took dirty grease off of mexican restaurants and such once a week or so and turned it into fuel. Pretty cool episode.

Re:Kari Byron
Personally, I think she is cold -- or I'm happy to be at the top of the tallest mountain, freezing my arse. A previous post could reveal to you a biography and a dedicated photograph area to sister Kari.
-
HERE IS TEH FULL SCOOP ON "Kari"
I looked it all up, because obviously none other than me are looking for everything but smut pictures of sister Kari.
Biographry of Kari -- "Sculptor, painter, actor and one-time-only backside-model."
Nuclearbeef dedicated photograph area to Kari -- I think this photo of her compares with brother Rob "CmdrTaco" Malda having chosen to wife with sister Kathleen. But before anyone goes around shootin' their wads, just remember that Kari flies the horns just like every Satanist in the McWorld.
I don't think they mean to spread freeBSD. -
Previous interview
It's too bad this chat transcript was not linked in the story, because it covers a lot of the more common questions.

MythBusters, not Myth Busters!
As a picky guy, I noticed a space. It is "MythBusters". See the official Web site. No space! Also, no Mythbusters.

Re:What a Scientific Conclusion!Yeah, well, I used to say that Jamie and Adam are engineers playing at science, but in fact they are mechanics playing at science. Their positive results are usually reasonable (it happened here so it might have happened before,) but their negative results are completely meaningless.
MythBusters is a bit smarter than Brainiac, but the girls, while undeniably pretty, aren't, well, like this.

Re:MythbustersIf you check out the application to develop a better death ray experiment, you see that one of the criteria for participation is:
You must not be a candidate for elected public office, and if selected as a participant, you will not become a candidate for elected public office until 12 months after the initial broadcast of the last episode of the series in which you appear.
I'm wondering if their logic is "If you can build a death ray, you can't run for office, since it would give you an unfair advantage. Who the hell is going to vote against the guy with the death ray?" -
Mythbusters...

Mythbusters
Not to argue that the mythbusters are always right, but they've disproved this in one of thier episodes. They did some pretty good convincing after building a trireme and using a few hundred mirrors and only reaching a couple of hundred degrees (F).

Re:Over simplified science?
If you watched Mythbusters you would know. Episode 3: Do eel skin wallets really demagnatize cards? It takes about 1000 gauss to strip the information. And the field or the card have to be in motion, otherwise there is no rearrangement of the magnetic media and thus the data. And no the eel ksin wallets will not erase your credit cards.

Now that you mention sperm whales..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sperm_Whale
There was an episode on Discovery's Animal Face-off about a Giant Squid versus a Sperm Whale: The winner was the sperm whale, which stunned the squid with its sonic emitter, and then ate it whole. Of course, before this, the whale had to swim at a very high speed to get rid of the squid's clawed tentacles (this is why some sperm whales have scars on their heads, because you can't just take off a squid's tentacle, you have to rip it off - ouch).
It was an exciting and interesting episode :) -
