Gravity Waves
The end part of the article notes that the upcoming LIGO observatory might see the first detection of gravitational waves, corresponding with a GRB event! Evidentially Einstein modeled the emission of gravity waves during a collision between Neutron stars. This is interesting because we don't really know much about gravity; e.g. if it is a wave or a constant. More info on LIGO is available here.

Ring Object SizeWhile I understand your concept, another poster suggested the rings are made of smoke sized particles. Actually, the particles are sometimes quite large according to this page:
More recently, astronomers bouncing radar off the rings and analyzing the reflected signal found that ring particles must be from a few centimeters to a few meters across. When the Voyager spacecraft went behind the rings with respect to the Earth, astronomers could measure the particles sizes from how Voyager's radio signal scattered off the particles and from how sunlight scattered through the rings. The ring particles range in size from the size of a small grain of sand to the size of a large house, but on average, they are about the size of your clenched fist. Spectroscopy of the rings shows that the particles are made of frozen water. Collisions between the ring particles keeps the ring system very flat and all of the particle orbits circular.
from http://www.astronomynotes.com/solarsys/s16.htm
though there may be other information available which I am unaware of, of course. But if this particle size stands, it seems a fairly simple explaination that a meteroid could hit a large ring object and cascade debris and impact effects throughout the rings themselves...

Re:Will anyone else be surprised..
if you are at the NAMM show, try going by the booth when Stephen Kay (programmer of the keyboard's KARMA2 function) is giving his demo. He actually knows how to use it.
;-) I think he is there at 10:30am and 5pm but I am not sure. Best wishes. -
USB2 Host; 76 synth-action / 88 weighted
Runs off a "fast" Pentium4, using what appears to be a semistandard MiniITX type board they are tapping for VGA and MIDI (via parallel interface). I've seen them plug in a USB keyboard to drive the system and perform a bug patch/software update after the show today. I don't know if this will be a feature that is enabled in the final product. It might be nice as a method of data entry, though. The synths are all software based, but I'm not sure how 'open' it actually is.There are 2 combo inputs with mic pre's and two additional 1/4" inputs, more would have been nice. I'd also probably prefer more footswitch/pedal inputs, and a 88 waterfall-key version would be incredible. It's a bit expensive at around $8,000 but looks pretty damn sweet. The KARMA 2 function is quite powerful. More information and high resolution photos forthcoming.

Re:Thanks from NASA
Good on ya', Justin, but isn't it a bit premature to be calling this a success? I mean, look at Spirit, sitting a few feet from its pad
I guess that depends on what part of the software he wrote, the roving software or the reentry routines... ;)

Re:Breeding is only one part
While I think you make a valuable point, one that many people would do well to seriously consider, I think it also worth mentioning that most creatures we are aware of do not build supercolliders. Our understanding of the Universe is perhaps minimal at best, and while physicists may believe the possibility of creating a universe-destroying effect as a result of supercollider experimentation to be small, there are of course numerous examples throughout history of scientists being surprised and astounded at experiment results that they considered 'unlikely'. I'm not necessarily suggesting stopping all supercollider experimentation. But perhaps it is just as naive to believe that we _cannot_ affect the entire universe, as it is to believe it's likely that we can do so.

Re:Why don't the idiots use the DMCA?
The DMCA is quite clear in its provisions for allowing questionable material to stay up. BlackBoxVoting had no need to roll over in the first place. The simply needed to submit a DMCA counter notice.
Simply send a counter notice stating that the documents do not breach copyright, and put the website back up. This moves the obligation to Diebold to bring suit!
Of course it's easy to provide advice on how to bring this issue into the courtroom when you have no reason to worry about the implications of the lawsuit. The only way to insure that this information remains available and something is done about it is to have the information available in as many places as possible so that it is impossible to bury it. Are you providing a mirror?

percentages
5% may sound like a small amount, but considering HOW MANY Windows boxes exist on EARTH, that is a HUGE number...
... which is why we use a percentage
"this is also why we count percentage of installs, and not percentage of uptime by users who have a clue how to do anything besides play solitaire...."

Re:virtual keyboard
this would be a great opportunity to use Dasher, a very interesting alternative input method. Like any input device, it takes a little while to get used to. But it learns over time, and can be quite fast and even a bit entertaining! it is available for Linux, MacOSX, Windows, and WinCE. Palm support is supposed to be coming.

Re:computer modeling
>> Because prior to this accident, the concensus opinion at NASA was that the foamed insulation was low-mass and crumbled easily enough that it didn't pose a threat to the vehicle.
> When it comes to kinetic energy relative velocity plays a far greater part than mass.See that is what I am saying. I'm not questioning whether there was mismanagement, as unfortunately that much seems pretty much obvious. I'm wondering why it is that after observing the foam impact, studying, and running computer simulations, these same scientists are so surprised at the damage from a real world test. They expected to see some tile damage, not a complete hole in the wing. I realize simulations are only as good as the data you feed it, but it almost seems to indicate that either someone's math (and NASA simulation models as a result) are completely in error, or that perhaps some people knew the possible implications and were basically ignored. I guess that is essentially why this investigation is taking place, but it seems as if the scope of the damage should have been much more obvious from simulations.
-
computer modelingAside from the issues of using telescopes to look at Columbia in orbit, possibly altered reentry paths, or other methods of mitigating disaster, why do these people actually need to get out a piece of foam and shoot it at a wing? Is it honestly that surprising to rocket scientists that anything, even foam, is going to cause some serious damage at 500mph? The Star Wars/SDI initiative was based around this premise -- the small plastic 'warheads' had no explosives, taking out ICBMs via pure kinetic energy.
Regardless of SDI and the size of the NASA budget, they do have numerous super computers, as well as access to other computing systems. I seem to recall they even did run some tests. How can the computer models be so far off?
Of course, none of this addresses the issue that if NASAs budget hadn't been crippled for decades there would likely already be repair infrastructure in space, rather than a single space station so hobbled by budget cuts they are now considering abandoning it (further excellent use of a small budget). I'm sorry, I know people lost friends and heros during this tragedy, but unfortunately there are also a number of issues surrounding these events that are almost rather incredulous.

launches from Mars worthless for now
I'm sorry, this IS cool and interesting and all, but the hangup is that there is nothing cool to launch from Mars. You would not only have to build a factory to build rockets and fuel, but an entire semiconductor fab and satellite assembly system... obviously bringing satellites FROM earth to launch on Mars would defeat the purpose of launching from Mars altogether, since you would have to then escape 2 gravitational systems - Earth and Mars... While a good point, I don't see us using Mars as a launching point before we have a manned installation on Mars so as to oversee any Mars-based satellite construction/launch...

car stereo iPod
yeah, I have a small 'iSomething' radio modulator and it is cool, but they are generally somewhat weak signal strength and can get interference from lightning, radio broadcast, RF noise, etc. Then if you also want to use a DC adapter you have more cables hanging off the iPod. With a car stereo 'dock' you could just shove the iPod in like a VCR tape and maybe use some controls on a faceplate or something, while using the dock connector to pass control commands into the iPod, charge the battery, and do a direct audio line-out. earth2willi.com!

in a word: Finally!
Yes! This feature has been a long time coming and finally brings recording to the iPod, which has been lacking it compared to Nomad and Archos. Now I can record samples and concerts with something small and unobtrusive -- if expensive. I imagine the new iPod will find many interesting new uses with the docking port, such as loading into a car stereo. Anyways check out earth2willi.com for lots of free music downloads to install on your new iPod! no screenshots of the 3D!
To see images or run programs in 3D on these screens, users won't need special glasses or additional software. Sharp already sells a cell phone with a 3D screen for the NTT DoCoMo network in Japan and is showing off a 3D notebook at conferences and press events that can run a 3D version of the game Quake.
nice to see these will be autostereoscopic displays. I was looking for a bit more information about the notebook, but I can't find much. There is some information in Japanese about the phones, though, as well as a few comments from this page.
...Three-dimensional monitors consist of two TFT panels separated by a parallax barrier. Each eye receives a slightly different image, which creates the illusion of depth....While objects in the background do not pose problems, viewing objects in the foreground can cause the eyes to shift back and forth rapidly.
This sounds like more advanced technology than the previous 3D displays occasionally discussed here, where the LCD panels were seperated by a larger space and there was less of a reliance on optics for a more limited 3D effect. I would imagine this will still have some negative side effects in terms of viewing angle though, can anyone comment on that?

specs don't always explain mechanical principal :)
A stirling engine has no moving parts? That's news to me. I followed your link to the sterling engine page and cliped the specs...... I just don't get the 150 RPM and ball bearing portions of the specification if there are no moving parts.
;-)
that's because that particular application of the stirling engine is trying to get mechanical energy out of it. (IANAME (mechanical engineer)) but as I understand it a pure stirling engine, essentially an external combustion engine, has no moving parts. Only the expansion and contraction of a gas medium inside the engine causes its motion. I'm not sure they would be any kind of solution because I think you would have to get the 'hot' end of the engine hotter than the cpu you are trying to cool, but then that may be an easier place to work with the thermal energy dissipation issues than the CPU itself. But if you are trying to use the engine for the purpose of thermal energy control, as this would be, the engine itself would have no moving parts.
the engines available at the link provided in the parent are pretty small, intended primarily for educational and entertainment purposes as opposed to real work, I just figured there are some links there to real information on how the stirling engine actually works. they are kind of intersting..taking a bit of time to get up to speed (perhaps another issue in their use for this particular application) but as I was saying they are supposed to be fairly efficient. I'm not sure how this is different than a peltier unit, though.

Re:Some Issues, But a Damn Fine Idea
The military doesn't waste time (according to them a waste of time) disarming every mine they come across. They just take care of the ones directly in their way and move on. As long as the mines in the area were not of a very few specific types of the mines out there, it would be great to not have to risk human lives and use the robot to disarm the mines.
what kind of specific mines are you talking about, and why? thanks

alternatives..
just because the RIAA would love for you to buy this album doesn't mean there is no choice in the matter. I may buy it and return it like suggested, and of could would do so tactfully since the retail store employees are probably not choosing the encryption-scheme-of-the-month.
there are alternatives however, and I don't necessarily mean Napster or Kazaa or whatever flavor of P2P client of the month, although there are of course plenty of 'legitimate' uses for these programs as well.
for example, nearly 3 full albums of music is available for download complete with print resolution artwork, advertisment free, no login required, and wholly untouched by the RIAA.
