Old idea
eMule had a similar system in 2005: http://emule-project.net/home/...
The only "new" thing about this is that is is done much more complicated with a blockchain. In practice it probably won't make much difference.

Re:On the other hand
Well too be fair if you are talking P2P then it should be pointed out Emule has always recommended VLC, and the ONLY app the Emule part file plugin is written for IS VLC, and while I haven't played with the mule in ages last I heard (at least on Windows) if you had VLC installed Emule would make that the default player for its previews over everything else.
So I wouldn't say it was trolling. One could argue the why of the situation (because VLC plays more funky formats and messed up files than anybody else to its credit IMHO) but to pretend that at least on P2P there isn't a real preference for VLC is just sticking one's head in the sand. Now that Limewire has been shut down I wouldn't be surprised if Emule is the number 1 P2P non torrent app right now, and the mule prefers VLC.

Already done by the eMule project!
The eMule Content Database has been doing that, very successfully and for many years. Legit content, that is.
And you need no tracker in eMule. As long as the file/collection is moderately popular, once a few people download it from you it will exist in the network for ever. I know as I have published service manuals there and I can still find them after 4 years...
-
Re:How do they plan to make money?
Totally agree. And let's get back to a client like eMule http://www.emule-project.net/ using KAD protocol.
-
Re:Blame Hari Seldon!
Well, there is second foundation already. Also the Mule is out there.
-
Re:Actually...
Plus, it really only deals with the Gnutella network, whereas most of the traffic nowadays would probably be using Bittorrent.
That's the issue with getting any reliable numbers. Are we dealing with Gnutella? Bittorrent? Fasttrack? eMule? Or, wait, how about a darknet ala WASTE? With the very last option, no one outside of the circle of trust would have any idea of what was going on. My personal favorite would be to attend a Fuck The RIAA party where people show up and transfer directly between computers; no network whatsoever. Not to mention, different methods are popular in different places. It's tough to quantify a combination of personal sharing and third generation p2p networks. A group of liberally-minded people condensed into a dorm with a smattering of computer science majors don't always show up in statistics.
-Not a darknet organizer, maybe -
Links, Links, and linksMy only question is, where are the links? Look for golf courses in coastal areas. Or search Wii Shop Channel for "Zelda". Or just look on eMule.

Re:recording industry? emule 0.47bEveryone - please download and use eMule 0.47b, it now has protocol obfuscation:
Protocol Obfuscation is a feature which causes eMule to obfuscate or "hide" its protocol when communicating with other clients or servers. Without obfuscation, each eMule communication has a given structure which can be easily recognized and idenitfied as an eMule packet by any observer. If this feature is turned on, the whole eMule communication appears like random data on the first look and an automatic identification is no longer easily possible. This helps against situations were the eMule Protocol is unjustly discriminated or even completly blocked from a network by identifying its packets.
It is however important to note what Obfuscation is not intended to do: It will not increase your anonymity, it will not make you "invisible" in any way and it will also not protect you effective against eavesdroppers. Also if your network admin has a good legal reason to block eMule (for example a restircted company network), bypassing it may cause you other unwanted consequnces.
Obfuscation is currently availble for ED2k TCP and UDP, Server TCP and UDP and Kad TCP communication. Kad UDP packets are not yet obfuscatable.
By default, each eMule client (>= 0.47b) supports obfuscated connections to other clients, but doesn't actively requests them. If your ISP is not discriminating the ED2K Protocol you do not need to change anything and still help other users which may need obfuscation. Otherwise your have the following options which can be found in the
Also, please update the ipfilter data file here in eMule, options, security, tick off "filter servers too", and put this URL in the "Update from URL box"
http://www.bluetack.co.uk/config/nipfilter.dat.gz
And click load.
Dont forget to add these two servers to static and dont forget to connect to both KAD and the ED2K networks!

Download while you still canWell it has been almost 6 years since Napster made its way into our lives? 6 Years Really? Lets look around and see what file sharing programs are left after the music and movie biz nuked the crap out of most of them.
1. Emule - This is one of the best we found out there. Hint (Search for server.met on google to update your server list)
2. Bearshare - Nice Gnutella client, lots of good hits
3. Limewire - Another Gnutella client. It even works on the Mac!
4. Shareaza - A beautiful Gnutella client with no spyware.
5. BitTorrent - Perfect for downloading movies, or that latest linux distro
6. KaZaa - Old favorite. Oh yea - Aussie users, you can't download - Yea Right!
7. Azureus - BitTorrent client that works on Mac, Linux, and Windows 8. Morpheus - Wow. They are still around? Wha happened!
9. Gnucleus - Open source Gnutella for you freeloading open source hippies out there - Yea I am talking about you
10. Napster - Ah, just put this one here to see if you are still reading, and I guess for shits and grins too
So there you have it folks. These are slim pickings. Get um while they still work!

Re:To all the naysayers, Ha.

Re:Sucks...
The worst problem I see is more people will rely on KAD, increasing the server load...
Please, get your facts straight!
Kademlia (short: KAD) is _NOT_ a centralized search facility, it is a search that goes just as much Peer 2 Peer as the downloading goes.
You ask your "neighbours" in the network, they will ask you, they report back to you, you to them and so on...
Therefore, your thought about "overloading the KAD-Servers" just wont happen, maybe your very own connection will use more resources for searching and giving results than before when everyone uses Kademlia but thats about it.
Read more about Kademlia here -
kazaa is dead long live p2p.
-
Re:Eh?
eDonkey's on the way out or dead I believe, but the eMule reimplementation of the eDonkey 2000 client is still going strong, using the eMule and KADemlia networks.
-
Re:P2P Defaults and Stupid People
or just use streamripper and rip your own from shoutcast, etc. If everyone turned off sharing, p2p systems wouldn't work. But yeah, I tell everyone to stay off the kazaa's and such anymore, aside from emule, based on the number of falsely represented file (trojans, viruses posing as mp3s). If the p2p software doesn't support checksumming, don't use it.
-
Re:Who uses eDonkey anyway?
Agreed, or to quote an eMule user having read that client's statistics:
Upload/Download to/from eDonkey has been less than 5% for years. -
Re:In other news...
Well, some shady figure in a remote alley whispered into my ear one night that a program called eMule might be a good alternative for the bad people who are drawn to these vile activities.
-
Re:Can somebody enlighten me?
To download files quickly on emule:
1) Share - you get a better rating and people are more likely to share back.
2) Make sure you forward ports from your ADSL router.
I find emule much faster then gnutella - but thats just me.
http://www.emule-project.net/ is probably the best client to use. -
Depends on files, I use Azureus,eMule, and Jubster
I use Bittorrent, specifically Azureus, for like tv shows/movies, eMule for applications, and Jubster for finding mp3s. They all seem to do the best in what they aim for.
Azureus is easy to use, nice features, works pretty well. Always does the job well for me from day 1. I really like watching for swarming and visual transfer flow on that one screen, just a neat feature.
eMule has a nice-looking interface, but sometimes the eDonkey network is just pokey to get results(from an impatient point of view). But, you can't beat the results for not being as fake(FastTrack was notorious for this do to the way the hashing only looked at the first 300k of a file).
I came across Jubster a couple of months ago at the recommendation of a friend, and it's very handy at times since it's a p2p/web search hybrid, so sometimes you get lucky and find what you want on a website and pull it down in 20 seconds. Aside from the web, it does the usual p2p transferring stuff on a few p2p nets, don't recall which one offhand beyond the donkey and gnutella nets.
I think most people do it like me, using a few different packages, depending on what you are looking to get. I have yet to find just one program that could do it all the way I want to.

Re:Yawn!
"This was also true before MLK and is true today. Part of me knows that apathy is a terrible thing. And yet I don't care enough that it is...
:-("
Honest and insightful. Don't worry, it's natural to be apathetic to abstract dangers. The abstract danger being that you'll end up in a dictatorship if not all good guys act to supress small and big evils. The danger system of your brain isn't in the newest/modern/logical part but in the middle/mammalian/emotional part of your brain. And that part just doesn't make a big enough connection between not stopping little evils and then ending up in a dangerous society. It works much simpler than that, most of the time anyway.
More on this phenomenon can be found in this article. (save it).
By definition, caring enough to act is a state of mind. It is possible to restructure your beliefs/your way of thinking so you'll be able to act in the right way when you see evil in the future. It seems to me you care enough about being able to care. I mean you care enough to change your ways. I personally find it helpful to take a step back and really think about my own thinking and changing the parts I don't like.
There are ways of doing this and most of those ways are called self-help. You have to be careful of quacks but there are genuine people among the self-help and neuro linguistic programming community. I suggest you download David DeAngelo's "Double Your Dating" video's from somewhere (I downloaded from eMule P2P). The reason is because it combines fun with important.
He talks a lot about other self-help stuff that he found to be good if you want to continue in that way but his vids are a great introduction. He also shows good ways to get laid. David DeAngelo takes a more biological/evolution/nature approach and Ross Jeffries takes a more "nurture" approach.
My suggestion, try to see the fun in taking action. Give your emotional brain some kind of reward for acting the right way like "satisfaction" or "logic buzz" or something.
Have fun with it. -
Emule
Emule http://www.emule-project.net/ is without a doubt one of the most popular open source apps (over 125 million downloads from SourceForge).
You can teach your coworkers how to acquire pirated software, music, dvds, and ebooks all for free. Certainly a valuable professional skill, especially if one wants to take work home with them.
And you can't beat the fun! ;-) -

Re:Does anyone see the irony here?
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say "IHBT, IHL, IWTTHAND". Apologies if you're not trolling.
Firstly, emule is open source.
I'm not quite sure what you mean by "Give me a valid use for bittorrent, apart for things like Distros?" Bittorrent has many legit uses... from your post it seems you realise this, but I'm not toally sure. However there are cases where there aren't official torrents, or the official torrents are being heavily hit after a release and so can't be accessed. I do agree that, sadly, the majority of usage is likely to be for copyright infringement, but I can still see it being useful for non-infringing purposes, and hopefully - unlike many other torrent sites - it won't be geared towards illegal content. -
Re:What is BitTorrent now?
There are quite a lot of differences in the three major P2P technologies. Here I try to cover the most important of each:
ed2k (eMule)
- + Easy linking. Links can be shared anywhere: in web pages, IRC, email. The single 100-200 character link contains everything that is needed to download the file.
- + Supports usage with and without a server (in eMule, ed2k server and serverless Kademlia)
- - If you run a server, you can't make it private
- - If you run a server, you cannot control what is shared there
- - Inefficient, seems to waste bandwidth
Direct Connect (DC++, Reverse Connect)
- + You can run servers (hubs) private
- + You can see what everyone is sharing in your hub
- + Using eMule-like links has recently become available, though clicking a link doesn't add the file in your queue, it only allows you to search for it
- + Efficient, you can download directly from someone very fast, even through intranet
- - No serverless mode
- - You don't have total control on what is shared in your server
- - Only in Reverse Connect you can download from multiple sources simultaneously
BitTorrent (Azureus, BitComet)
- + The most efficient p2p yet
- + Server (tracker) admin can have total control of what is shared choosing a directory where he uploads allowed torrents
- + A single
.torrent file can contain instructions on how to download multiple files - - No serverless mode
- - No searching
- - To share download instructions for a file(set), you have to be able to transfer a
.torrent file, a plaintext link isn't enough
This has been the situation for a while. In ed2k nothing big has changed for a year. DC++ (incl. Reverse Connect) is evolving, but magnet (TTH) linking has been the only major change in years. When DC++ gets its support for ADC complete, the evolution of Direct Connect is predicted to get a major boost.
What trackerless BitTorrent does is to make every client a small tracker. So it doesn't just enable searching and serverless usage, it also makes sharing illegal files easier (more than it does for legal). Previously, to share content, you had to find a tracker that allows posting
.torrents. To share copyrighted content, you also had to find a tracker that didn't care about legal aspects. So sharing legal and illegal content is now equally easy, while it previously was (at least in theory) a little bit easier to share legal content.Overall, the changes of trackerless BitTorrent would still make it the best available p2p techonology. For certain special cases, Direct Connect could be better, and both DC and ed2k support easier linking than BT, but even that can change in the future: BT could implement a meta-p2p engine, so that you could share plaintext links that make your client download the right
.torrent file and add it to your queue. This would make BT superior to eMule in every aspect. -
eMule, eMule+, MetaCafe and the GPL
GPL violations seem to be getting more and more common. Take for instance eMule, where an eMule+ developer is knowingly breaking the GPL while working for a proprietary company called MetaCafe:
http://forum.emule-project.net/index.php?showtopic =72668 (login probably required)
http://forums.metacafe.com/viewtopic.php?t=139
The worst part is probably that the eMule+ folks, who forked the eMule codebase and should be well aware of how the GPL works, are directly contributing to this violation. -
Re:Woohoo!
You mean he's got a list of currently operating ROM sites?
If you're looking for pirated ROMs, and you're not exclusively on a university's Internet connection, then here's all the list you need:
-
Re:Agreed
Check out the forums at Emule Project. You will find threads where people discuss their sharing strategies, tell how often they check the status of the uploads, etc. Emule provides the facility for users to keep track of sharing and SOME users use it. That's why some people create and share "LIST OF DUPES" files, that's why people add comment to their shared files, etc. Furthermore, even though there aren't checked/unchecked folders, people do rename their files so that the name reflects the contents better. So when you download SpiderMan 3.avi on ed2k, you can check the alternative names and find out that it's a fake and guess what the real content is.
KaZaA and BitTorrent don't provide features for people to monitor their uploads, that's why people seem to care less. -
And how!
Before I started using the ed2k network last April I had six gigabytes of music, mostly ripped from CDs I had bought as a teenager, of which I estimate that I listened to three gigabytes of it regularly. After using ed2k for ten months, I now have 84 gigabytes of music. I estimate that I listen to something like 20 to 30 gigabytes of it regularly, and I try to listen to at least one new artist, album, or work per week. (Since I work from home more often than not, I am fortunate to have plenty of time to familiarize myself with new music.)
The collection has gotten so large, in fact, that I've had to converted all ape and flac files to high-bitrate ogg-vorbis files using gstreamer to avoid running of disk space (recently I broke down and bought a larger drive and a DVD burner). If Debian ever packages the new mpc plugin (or if I find motivation to build the plugin myself), I'll save even more space. (The ogg files use a little less than half the space of the lossless codecs.)
The crux of the biscuit: yes, I've discovered all sorts of new musical interests by browsing the ed2k network.
Though I've had an off-handed interest in early and classical music for as long as I can remember, only thanks to ed2k have I been able to amass such a variety from which I can pick and choose, with which refine my taste. Neither streaming radio nor satellite radio can compare. Mix this rich digital library with Wikipedia and free web-based courses on introductory music theory and one has an interesting and educational way to spend one's evenings for a few months.
I've also acquired a taste for indigenous music from the so-called far reaches of the world. The gamelan music of Indonesia has been a particularly delightful discovery, as has the ancient music of China and Japan. I found a corpus of Islamic music from Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Yemen, and more. While I'm not interested so much in the subject matter, the music is fantastic.
It may sound silly, but a suite of nature soundtracks I found (consisting of waves crashing, thunderstorms and rain, insects chirping, etc.) turned out to be quite soothing while falling asleep.
I also found a few movie soundtracks that I now consider indispensable, such as those for Waking Life, Akira, and Donnie Darko.
There are also entire discographies of modern popular and semi-popular artists, some of which I'd never heard and ended up loving, such as Simon & Garfunkel, Nick Drake, Frank Zappa, Nine Inch Nails, Tom Waits, and Leonard Cohen.
I <3 eMule. Perhaps soon it will work on Wine....

Re:eXeem is NOT related to Bittorrent in any way!
Check out this fascinating thread. Many eMule users "care" about what files they share and so support the "push" market model by determining the supply. You won't find many people who would proudly say "I shared "Spiderman 2" so that it spread better", but many would enjoy sharing rare, old and niche files. Because of this the eDonkey network is a much better library, but a worse content releasing system.

Re:I love...
Why does anyone use WinMX, Kazaa or any other spy and mal-ware software when both eMule and Shareaza are available? with source?
I guess I spend so much money on my hobby, CGI and the software for that, I just can't handle the thought of buying something when a free application does as good or better.
Some free software that is better than alternative commercial software (or has no alternative):
PAF 5 (genealogy software, go to download products, ignore Marie Osmond's attempts to seduce you to the dark side)
GMAX 3D Modelling software
You can also get tons of free software with the purchase of magazines (I know, not really free); you can get the previous version or a free version of just about any graphical app when you buy digit magazine, including software that cost kilobucks as recently as a year ago.

Was I right about single point of failure?I wonder if my yesterday comment would be prophetic... Seriously, as I said, ed2k network is much more resistant against scare tactics, police raids, death threats and the like. And even if all servers are closed, the Kad network would still work fine and there is no legal ground to prohibit people from maintaining connections to it.
Those who want to download Linux distros, don't worry. Those who like to download Adobe and MS software too, as well as other juicy stuff, it may be time to jump the ship. :) Download eMule or another client and start using the eDonkey2000 network. The best thing is that you don't even need sites like FindHash or (now deceased) ShareReactor and ShareConnector - the search functions work just fine with either servers or Kad and a link can be distributed in any form a plaintext string can:ed2k://|file|(Why The Riaa And Mpaa Are Wrong) Lawrence Lessig - Free Culture.mp3|7600415|FEF5808A7BC2C7527F1614925D7CF
See? You don't need to host torrents, you don't need to run trackers, you only need the size and the checksum to get the files (and someone to still share them, of course). ed2k network may not have the flashcrowd effect and you may spend a bit longer getting the latest Hollywood release than you would with BitTorrent, but ed2k is here to stay and you don't depend on link sites that much. Furthermore, legally providing an ed2k link (it's just the checksum and the file size, come on!) is much safer than serving a torrent (which contains information about users who distribute this copyrighted work without authorisation).1 20|/

Re:Single point of failure
You have a large list of known clients. You try to connect to them and when you connect to one who is online, he gives you enough up-to-date IP-addresses of other online users. It's very unlikely that all your IP-addresses become invalid (only if **AA manages to sue most P2P users into submission and scare away the rest). And even then, it would only require one IP address of a currently connected user (that you can get on a forum, on an IRC channel, etc.) to get back on Kad (where you would connect with more users and again collect more working IPs for the future).
I am not sure whether the eMule client comes with a built-in list of IPs, but you can try it - download eMule, install it, disable ed2k network protocol, enable Kad and see if it works without servers at all. -

Re:All the 'fun' of P2P?
Obviously you're not up to date with current P2P. Try the latest version of E-Mule; it either doesn't have the problems you've mentioned, or makes it very simple for the user to discern and avoid the problems.
