I have to say that the AI in Far Cry 2 is definitely one of the worst of current generation video games. I couldn't play that game for more than a couple days before getting utterly bored and frustrated at the idiotic AI.
Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, on the other hand, has some of the best AI I've seen AND its a multiplayer game. The bots' ability to attack and defend objectives while using infantry and vehicle skills against the random actions of human players is incredible.

Tons of options, development, and best of all no persistent unlockables.
Smart teamplay is the name of the game there.
Yes, it is arcady, and not a strategic shooter a-la Rainbow Six, but who wants to sneak around on silent footsteps for half an hour, just to be finished off by one bullet...
It is not a standard deathmatch, or capture the flag. It has many elements and different play modes, asymmetric but balanced teams, vehicles, deployables and absolutely beautiful maps.
It is not a clone of COD, BF, but a successor to Wolfenstein Enemy Territory, which was released for free by the same team that developed Quake Wars, set in the Quake universe, during the Strogg invasion of Earth (Pre- Quake II).

And to boot, it has a free demo map you can download and get a taste of the action. But noobies beware, this can be an overwhelming game at first, and can take months to master even a single class on one side. -

Also appears to be affecting some games as well. Users of the recent Enemy Territory: QuakeWars release are reporting similar connection reset issues. Some are on other cable ISPs, so maybe Comcast isn't alone in this practice?

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars to have ads, too
id's latest game, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is ramping up in-game advertising. All the levels contain conspicuous billboards and posters that will dynamically update with banners. Currently, they display joke recruiting posters.
When the real ads appear, I plan to script global tells that will promote competitor's products. I've read talk that people will code proxies to filter the ads once they appear. Oh, it's published by Activision, not EA.

Exactly. Some of the best games are OpenGL. Like one game I've got on preorder for June: Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. Check out the in-game footage. The game looks to be one of the biggest online FPS games of the year. It's not missing anything by omitting DX10.

/play/ all of them except for X2:The Threat as an FPS, but you won't have much fun if you don't have players who understand team play. Oh, and a commander who knows what s/he's doing. The point is, I didn't even have to look hard to find these games that fit my particular interests. Take a look around. When it comes to gaming, things are far better than they used to be. So, yes, gaming under Linux is getting better. Just not as well as we'd like, quite yet. -
BF2 was bad, IMO. Let's look to the future.
I bought BF2. Put it down after a bit for the same reasons others have listed in this discussion. I'm not gonna restate the problems with BF2. I'd rather ask you people this: What games are you looking forward to in 2006?
ET:QW is the only game on my radar for 2006 so far.
Basically, ET play mechanics (which I like) set in a sci-fi Quake universe. Humans vs Strogg.
So far what I think makes it stand out to me:
-Unlimited draw distance, no fog or pop-up
-Asymetrical, yet balanced factions. Meaning, both sides don't have the same (or incredibly similar) weapons. Humans tend to have machine guns and tanks and helos, while the Strogg will have a big-ass walker (heavy armor, heavy damage, but slow) and laser guns and shit. This could be cool, each side having distinct, unique gear, instead of carbon copy armies fighting with the same pallet-swapped eq.
-Not Sucking on Foot. I've read numerous times about how the devs are taking great care to make it so you can stil kick ass and succeed if you didn't get a vehicle.
-No Ranked Server BS

More about image quality, than speed (for me)
I have a 19" Sony X-Black TFT, which is quite responsive, reasonably large display and has really vibrant colour reproduction, I prefer it to my 19" CRT as I can use it for long periods without feeling fatigued. This means I never play above 1280x1024 (and at 60 FPS, as I like to play in vsync with the display to prevent tearing, which on a TFT is enough FPS for anyone).
I am primarily concerned about image quality, which means Anti Aliasing (4x or higher), Anisotropic filtering (x8 or x16) and smoothing on edges of transparent textures. My AMD64 3500+ w/ dual DDR400 and 7800 GT 256 MB are not quite able to deliver high end quality at 1280x1024 in games like Battle Field 2, Half Life or Doom (close, and certainly 'good enough', but not with high end quality details - I still have to put up with slow frame rates or have blurry textures and jagged edges all over the place, which break the immersion in an 'uncanny valley' sort of way due to the otherwise very high quality environment).
TBH my CPU is the bottleneck at the moment (I'll probably get a dual core AMD64 4200+ which will resolve that, the 4800+ is just a bit _too_ expensive to justify), once I have sorted out the CPU bottleneck I'll have to add the other card to my free PCI-Express slot and only then, with both cards in SLI mode, will I get MUCH better image fidelity (and drastically reduce blurred textures, missing lines and remove all jaggies).
The quality, rather than FPS or resolution is all I care about, even on there own the best cards in the market can't quite cut it (like the 7800 TGX) with really high quality textures and smoothing on games that use the HL2 or Doom engines (even games using the Unreal engine like WoW or Lineage are pushing it with the quality options turned up in the driver control panel). There is a massive noticeable difference between the quality of say a game with 12 x FSAA and 16x Anisotropic Filtering than a game without (or even at lower settings), blurry textures and sharp edges are what I find the most distracting though.
I don't know how much this consciously applies to most people though, I suspect few people other than a few select gamers even really play with the advance settings in their driver control panels an understand just how much better they could make their games look if they knew the options existed (typically the in game settings in most titles are very limited and don't enable the really nice features that make all the difference to high end quality, they are more there to just allow people to change settings in a broad way - usually so they can easily downgrade the detail to play on older systems).
There are a few titles that will use some of the features (like Shader 3.0), but it's fair to question them. However it's a bit of a chicken and egg scenario there of course. I know I'm going to need an SLI setup to run something like Quake Wars Enemy Territory at something approaching this level of detail. -

You might be on to something there. The article goes on to explain that among other nanosatellite's, one called the QuakeSat is being launched. Now, they disguise the fact that it's for Enemy Territory: Quake Wars http://www.enemyterritory.com/ by saying that it's for Earth Quake prediction. But smart people like us know that the satellite would have been called an EarthQuakePredictionSat if that were true! It must be some sort of new network for the game. Maybe Carmack has figured out a way to eliminate the cost to space that causes players lag by overloading space with nanosatellites?
Or, perhaps the Strogg are true and we're all participating in a recruitment program to eventually become an Army trained to fight the Strogg off?!

I believe Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory runs natively on Linux. Enemy Territory Webstie. Then again I may be wrong =/
