Obvious troll solution:
Trolls will simply hold up a sign in front of the webcam that says "Giant hairy penis" with a printed link to a myspace account. (showing pictures of said penis)
Other fun things, would be including things like pictures of mushroom stalks, erotic vegetables, and pictures of the less savory of political and corporate individuals.

Re:A Waste?
Basically, it's a large sect, which teaches QiGong.
I don't think sect means what you think it means. The proper word for a religious organization is a cult. And it most definitely is a religious cult, since the founder basically claims to be a divine being and teaches his followers to militantly defend his "law"
The PRC government has historically encouraged Qigong and other traditional art forms. Hell, it's pretty much categorized as a medical science in China. Non-Falun Gong Qigong certainly isn't prosecuted, I used to see groups of old people practicing in formation every morning. In fact, in 1982 the government passed a policy to not promote, debate, or criticize Qigong (I can't find a detailed explanation of this policy in English, but here's the source in Chinese). If it's simply Qigong, why do people cling to it so resolutely? Would you set yourself on fire to protest the government banning yoga, or at least go around passing out pamphlets about how great yoga is on street corners and university campuses? It's obviously a little more hardcore than plain Qigong.
Have you read the actual teachings of Falun Gong? Before you put the face of the well-meaning mystic on Falun Gong, check out their publications. Here are a few choice snippets.
We've found that when a person is born, many, many him are born at the same time within a certain range of the space of this universe.
They found that? Really?
When a person is born, his whole life is already laid out there in a specific dimension. Meaning, where he is in his life, what he's supposed to do, and so onâ"it's all there. So who arranged his life? It's obviously done by higher beings.
The fact is, qigong treatments can't be like ordinary people's healing methods - it's not an ordinary person's skill. It's something higher. And are higher things allowed to disrupt the ordinary world on a large scale? A Buddha's capabilities are just awesome - with the wave of a Buddha's hand all of the human race's sicknesses could vanish. Then why don't any Buddhas do that, especially when there are so many of them? Why don't they have mercy and heal you? Because that's just how the ordinary world is
Right, and God conceals traces of His work to give us free will.
I divided my gong among the disciples who I brought along. Each of them got a share, and they were energy clusters composed of over 100 abilities. I sealed their hands, but still, some of them suffered bites to the hand that broke the skin, caused blisters, or made them bleed, and that even happened a lot. Those things are so fierce. You think youâ(TM)d dare to touch them with your ordinary personâ(TM)s hands?
Yes, my disciples are obviously superior to ordinary people, so you better not try where they failed. But if you join the ranks of my disciples then you'll be elevated from the ordinary. Classic.
When a person has a tumor somewhere, an infection somewhere, a bone spur somewhere, or whatever, in another dimension there's a being crouching at that place. In a deep dimension there's a being there. A typical qigong master can't see that, because the usual supernatural abilities can't see it, and they can only see that the person has black qi in his body. Wherever there's black qi there's illnessâ"they're right about that. But, black qi is not the root cause of the problem. Instead, it's a being in a deeper dimension, and it's that being that produces the field.
I don't even have to ridicule it, it ridicules itself. This ain't government propaganda, folks. Straight from the horse's mouth.

Re:Shocked, I am
What you're missing is the big picture here. At some point the Chinese said 'no' to the Falun Gong. Then the Falun Gong did some nasties to piss off the government. Then it escalated into a ban, and then into persecution.
There are western newspapers and publications (Epoch Times - http://en.epochtimes.com/) run by pro-Falun Gong supporters who do nothing but bag the Chinese government and have a hidden agenda supporting terrorist actions within Mainland China and Taiwan.
They conduct vigils and protest outside Chinese embasies in Sydney and in China town (probably other countries as well). They use shock imagery to win sympathy from westerners who are already under the influence of anti-Chinese media.
I did some research for a documentary I was making about Xinjiang which overlapped on a few issues and found the editors and journalists for the Epoch Times quite scary. The more I analysed the issues, I found patterns to the newspapers. What was a headline, how they stagger world news and international affairs around the pivot point of anti-China. Repetitive wording over many months to deal with single issues, and downright lies about the Chinese people who were apparently leaving the Communist Party (12 Party Talks) "at a million a day".
Last year they hijacked a TV Transmitter and broadcast anti-government material on there (lies actually). They also set fire to police buildings, murder police officers (and their families) and are now trying to convert (recruit) young people into their what is now referred to within China (and what I refer to outside of China) as a Cult.
Oh yeah, they're nice people - all they do is meditate and don't hurt anyone - which they don't really - just the extremists right?
I've met a few in my time as well - mostly handing me pamphlets. Speak to other Chinese about them - they do not regard them as safe or their ethics remain questionable.
For sure I won't be talking my mouth off them here in China (I'm in Beijing), either for or against. I regard the whole persecution and retaliation as wasted space over a historical power struggle. The only thing I did realise is that they're as bad as each other. They both make up lies and do questionable things - just that we want to believe the underdogs.

article in the Epoch Times (a Chinese newspaper) about a brilliant
Chinese professor who has cracked her fifth encryption scheme in ten
years. This one's a doozy, too: she and her team have taken out the
SHA-1 scheme, which includes the (highly thought of) MD5 algorithm. As
a result, the U.S. government and major corporations will cease using
the scheme within the next few years. From the article: " These two
main algorithms are currently the crucial technology that electronic
signatures and many other password securities use throughout the
international community. They are widely used in banking, securities,
and e-commerce. SHA-1 has been recognized as the cornerstone for
modern Internet security. According to the article, in the early
stages of Wang's research, there were other data encryption
researchers who tried to crack it. However, none of them succeeded.
This is why in 15 years Hash research had become the domain of
hopeless research in many scientists' minds. "
Wang announced at an international data security conference that her
team had successfully cracked four well-known hash algorithms--MD5,
HAVAL-128, MD4, and RIPEMD--within ten years.
A few months later, she cracked the even more robust SHA-1. -
Re:Whatever, stalking modsHas this happened to you or anyone you know? If not, stop the fearmongering.
Well you are obviously clueless, but if you had ever *bothered* to check the news, anywhere other than slashdot, you would have seen it happening in lots of places.A reporter for a local tv channel in Delhi, India, accused a school teacher Ms. Uma Khurana, of coercing her students into a prostitution racket. With her name, workplace, home address etc. being supplied, a local mob beat her up. Later it turned out that the reporter just wanted to settle an old grudge and the allegations were false. Tell it to the mob now, which nearly killed the poor lady.

A tv crew from a Microsoft NBC, tried to lure a DA in USA, into meeting with a person pretending to be a minor child, in a chatroom. When the DA did not fall for the trap, they decided to stalk him by surrounding his house with tv crews, forcing the DA into committing suicide. His widow is now suing Microsoft NBC.
A husband in China, whose wife had initiated an affair with a student, instead of settling the matter with the parties directly involved, or going for marriage counselling or divorce, decided to go the vigilante route. He published the real details of the student online with his story and called upon others to deliver "justice". Impassioned people teamed up to uncover the student's address and telephone number, both of which were then posted online. Soon, people eager to denounce him showed up at his university and at his parents' house, forcing him to drop out of school and barricade himself with his family in their home.

Is it fear mongering? Or is it just you being apathetic and burying your head in the sand like an ostrich, despite the various items like these in the news? Decide for yourself.

Re:Prosecute them.
To my way of thinking, if you disagree with your countries policy, the proper course of action is to voice your opposition with your elected leaders, to your fellow citizens and at the ballotbox. You don't help other world leaders make a case against your country or undermine it. You don't stand on foreign soil and bad mouth your country and/or Government.
So, you would have a problem with a Chinese citizen coming to America and badmouthing China?. You may say it's a matter of degree, but if someone feels something their government is doing is wrong, and it's obvious that the government isn't listening, what else should they do?

What Yahoo doesn't say
Yahoo has often recited the standard 'must comply with local laws' line, but have they ever identified which Chinese law(s), specifically, forced their hand? They were even asked point-blank, and remained conveniently silent.
Shi Tao's lawyer says there was "no obligation at all to follow mainland China's law" (from the article linked above).
Is there in fact any substance to Yahoo's position, or is it just a hollow public relations exercise? If there's truth to what Yahoo says, they could be a bit more open about this.

The word on the street in Venezuela
... is that Chavez has now threatened to block the Internet. This news comes via email from Venezuelan students who are protesting the silencing of RCTV. It's not easy to confirm this either way, but readers can draw their own conclusions. There is reportedly now only one small Venezuelan media outlet remaining that's "said to be still willing to report honestly on events in Venezuela", and Chavez has apparently threatened to shut it down too.
Students protesting RCTV's shutdown also report that security forces went out of their way to kill one of the protesters. True or false? Again, hard to say for sure, but either way you can bet that most Venezuelan media won't report it.

Re:Mohammed and the HanAfter the June 4 riot was suppressed, we have been thinking about how to prevent China from peaceful evolution and how to maintain the Communist Party's leadership. We thought it over and over but did not come up with any good ideas. If we do not have good ideas, China will inevitably change peacefully, and we will all become criminals in history. After some deep pondering, we finally come to this conclusion: Only by turning our developed national strength into the force of a fist striking outward--only by leading people to go out --can we win forever the Chinese people's support and love for the Communist Party.
From the perspective of history, the reason that China is faced with the issue of living space is because Western countries have developed ahead of Eastern countries. Western countries established colonies all around the world, therefore giving themselves an advantage on the issue of living space. To solve this problem, we must lead the Chinese people outside of China, so that they could develop outside of China.
Would the United States allow us to go out to gain new living space? First, if the United States is firm in blocking us, it is hard for us to do anything significant to Taiwan and some other countries! Second, even if we could snatch some land from Taiwan, Vietnam, India, or even Japan, how much more living space can we get? Very trivial! Only countries like the United States, Canada and Australia have the vast land to serve our need for mass colonization.

Re: evil cultsSpeaking of cults, I went poking around for more information on this subject, and I found an essay entitles "On How the Chinese Communist Party Is an Evil Cult".
Now, I don't agree with everything in that tract either; for instance, I don't see how persecution of Falun Gong practitioners constitutes "genocide" (since members do not, and have not, constituted any particular ethnic group). Still, it's hypocritical for the Chinese Communist Party to claim it's fighting a cult when it has such a track-record of violence and secrecy itself.
The few examples of self-immolation were probably not specifically the result of Falun Dafa teaching, but rather a possible response in a world made completely illogical by the actions of the police and CCP agents.
Before the crackdown, there were 10,000 children in China who said "The Emperor has no clothes" and a hundred million who looked for themselves.

Re:Can someone explain...
Aha! Thank you, I asked that question earlier (where is google.cn located) and got no response.
I may have spoken too soon. According to this it's currently in California, although according to this the censorship deal was struck with the goal of getting a presence on the mainland in mind.
This is really beginning to sound like the people who got all gaga about Microsoft releasing limited parts of their source code under NDA and went off wibbling about "open source Windows".
Actually I think I've come up with a reasonable sounding explanation for the different viewpoints. People are condemning Google's slide towards the evil of censorship and praising Microsoft's reduction in the evil of censorship. But that doesn't change the fact that Microsoft's evilness on this issue is bigger than Google's. So Google.Evil++ is bad while Microsoft.Evil-- is good, but Microsoft.Evil > Google.Evil all the same.
A cynical person might think that Microsoft's press release is intentionally playing down the latter fact and playing up the former. -

Re:Communism must die.
I suggest the communist apologists read/listen to this (also available on iTunes podcast). Unlike most of the revisionist fools on this thread, it is compiled and written by Chinese nationals who were fortunate enough to escape the Communist system, and actually know first-hand what they are talking about.
Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party
Some choice quotes:
Looking at the history of China's last 160 years, nearly one hundred million people have died unnatural deaths and almost all of the traditional Chinese culture and civilization have been destroyed.
Today the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)'s violence and abuses are even more severe than those of the tyrannical Qin Dynasty.
Why is Falun Gong, which upholds the principles of Truthfulness, Compassion and Tolerance and has been promulgated in over 60 countries worldwide, being persecuted only in China, not anywhere else in the world?
The CCP has devoted the nation's resources to destroying China's rich traditional culture. The CCP's destruction of Chinese culture has been planned, well organized, and systematic, made possible by the state's use of violence.
Under the rule of the CCP, 60 to 80 million innocent Chinese people have been killed, leaving their broken families behind.
Perhaps Marx's communism can work on a small scale where everyone opts in, and those who don't can freely leave the commune, but there's no way to implement it on a large scale other than by force, which of course accounts for the horrific loss of human life under communist systems in the 1900s.
One of the core components of Marx's communism is completely unworkable - the remuneration scheme: "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need". All that means is that those with ability are enslaved to those without. The consequences are that those with ability begin to hide and not use their ability, and economic advancement retrogrades. (It is a vexing fact that some people have no ability and others have great ability, and many others are somewhere in between on that scale. Perhaps one day we will genetically modify the human race to create a species of pure geniuses, changing human nature in a way that makes possible social organization systems that previously weren't, but till that happens, communism a system that doesn't work on a large-scale, be it Marx's or Lenin's or Mao's.)
Concurrently, how do you decide what everyone's "need" is? At the fundamental level, every human being has the same material needs - food, water, clothing, shelter. No one actually needs anything else, but that won't stop people from trying to work the system, and of course there will be points of corruption and failure, where "pull" and favor-trading serve to skew the distribution of wealth.
For this reason, large-scale communist systems are even more vulnerable to corruption than their capitalist counterparts. Capitalism may see some unfairness in wealth distribtion, and yes we have a problem with the growing power of corporations, but that book is still being written and it's too early yet to judge capitalism by it. But a rectifying factor of capitalism is that those with ability are rewarded for using it to create vast wealth that naturally disseminates throughout society. Capitalism tends to reward those who create wealth more so than those who consume it, while communism is the diametric opposite, and that is one of the primary reasons for communism's failure. -

The Reason for China's Increasing Censorship
As we have seen from recent Slashdot postings [1][2], China (or the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) rather) has been increasing it's internet censorship. But what for? It turns out that CCP membership is in drastic decline. It is estimated that there are about 50 million members and according to international newspaper The Epoch Times (English)(Chinese), over one million of them have issued written statements of withdrawal. This has occurred over the past two months at a rate of over 20,000 per day. This is thought to be a direct cause of a published compilation of articles, Nine Commentaries on the Chinese Communist Party which provides a critical analysis of the CCP and it's last 80 years of leading the Peoples Republic of China (PRC). This past weekend, a parade was held in New York to celebrate this milestone and the potential future of China.

OT: Commemorate Zhao Ziyang and Rectify Tiananmen
From the The EpochTimes: Commemorate Zhao Ziyang and Rectify Tiananmen Square: A Petition http://english.epochtimes.com/news/5-1-19/25814.ht ml The People's Republic of China National People's Congress The People's Republic of China State Council Mr. Zhao Ziyang, the former General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party, has passed away. His death is attracting more and more attention both inside China and abroad. As citizens of the People's Republic of China, exercising our rights and duties as granted by the legislature and laws, we, hereby, publish this open letter. We request that the authorities concerned offer a public reply to our letter, as stipulated by the Chinese legislature and laws. First, we express our deepest grief over the passing of Mr. Zhao Ziyang. On behalf of China's citizens, we request that China's media respect the people's rights to information and report objectively, justly, and completely the news relating to Mr. Zhao Ziyang's death. We further request that the media immediately stop banning and deleting related discussions in the media and on Internet sites. We object to formalistic reports that only serve to promote pre-approved topics like the Party's political studies. Such reporting at this time is inhumane and tramples on public opinion and sentiment. Second, we demand that a funeral committee for Mr. Zhao Ziyang be established, and a large-scale memorial service be convened on Tiananmen Square. We demand that Mr. Zhao Ziyang's life, especially his conduct during the 1989 political event, be justly evaluated. Third, we ask to participate in the memorial service for Mr. Zhao Ziyang. We reserve the following rights: If the government rejects a public memorial service or restrains our rights to participate in the memorial service, we will use our own means to conduct memorial activities on Tiananmen Square or other suitable locations. Four, we request that the National People's Congress, in accordance with the legislation, establish a team to investigate the illegal constraints on Mr. Zhao Ziyang's personal freedom and freedom of speech. Given Mr. Zhao Ziyang's illegal house arrest for 15 years, we suggest that Zhao's family seek compensation from the State. Five, we request that the relevant authorities investigate the presence of Chinese police on Tiananmen Square for the last 15 years. We believe that delegating a heavy police force to monitor the country's public places is a violation of the law. This abuse of power has not only encouraged violations of basic human rights by police, but has also wasted large amounts of the tax payers' money and has badly damaged the country's image. This quasi state of martial law subjects the whole country to an atmosphere of fascist-style political terror, reducing public places to private strongholds. We call on Chinese citizens and all people in the world who are concerned about the aforementioned issues to sign in support of our petition. What about the Green
Being as rampantly anti-american as i am (aka liberal) i welcome a future challenge to american political/economic hegemony. But looking at China's environmental history as evidinced in this book, including the mass devastation that occured in the three gorges dam project and the fact that China has allowed for themselves to become a major tech dumping ground for the worlds unwanted 386s and floppy drives and the like as became big news over two years ago. Perhaps this isnt the best thing for China and the worlds environmental health. Lets hope China's future bring both technological revolution and acknowledgement of environemtal respect!

While an electric bike may not be as green as a pedal bike it's sure better than a car.
In light of reports that China is the fastest growing automobile market in the world, electric bikes look pretty good.
