Robin Sage and 641a
"She" sent me a friend request on 2009/12/31, which I accepted, [hey, there's lots of cute hacker women] but we knew in a few days that something was fishy. See my post to "her" facebook wall on 2010/01/07.
http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000595856619&v=wall&story_fbid=238154768802&ref=mf
After some background discussion with people in security you might recognize, some of us kept her on our friend list, to see what "she" was up to.
Anyway, thanks to all the corporate and government guys who though that someone who was a friend of mine must be trustworthy enough to hire.
:! -
Re:Only link that matters
It appears that her profile pic up until June 27th was much less provocative.
That makes the people who accepted her friend invites a little less shameful in my opinion.
I was able to discover this tidbit of information by clicking on the racy profile picture in attempt to see more. Given that I already knew at that point that she was a security researcher posing as a Russian spy posing as a Defense Dept. employee - I am inclined to judge myself much more harshly than the folks named in the parent article. -
Re:Which emo chick is it
An apparent gorgeous, six-pack stomached, bikini wearing, beauty queen interested in bi-sexual encounters.
Fuck, I knew what this was and I almost clicked "Add as Friend" too.

Re:Hmm....
You actually don't have that choice, unless you infringe their terms, which say, "You will not provide any false personal information on Facebook, or create an account for anyone other than yourself without permission".

Read TFA
The TFA has a screenshot that says "You can also become a saddo on Facebook"
I did a search on facebook for "saddo". Found this, among other pages: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Being-a-Saddo/383335583952?ref=search
It looks like what is actually printed is true. Taking things out of context, anyone can apply their own meaning to anything they find.

Re:For a day?
Use a select box and border it one pixel. Hell, before you do that, round the corners grow it a few pixels and fill with the gradient tool. Look in the select menu to see everything you can do to a selection. Granted in GIMP I don't bother much with boxes.
5 minutes in GIMP because I was bored:

Re:For a day?
The version of The GIMP I have on my Ubuntu laptop (2.6.8) is remarkably like older versions of Photoshop in its interface, so it's hard to call out The GIMP on its interface anymore. It's vastly improved over even a couple of years ago. Anyone with a modicum of Photoshop experience can make that transition very easily.
Scribus, on the other hand
... oy vey. Compared to the proprietary desktop publishing software used in the newspaper industry (Adobe InDesign, QuarkXPress, CCI Layout Champ, the dead-but-not-soon-enough Harris/Baseview system), Scribus' GUI still needs a lot of work ... or, even better, a massive overhaul (at least, so long as it doesn't look like CCI, which has its own Facebook unfan club called "fuck cci" for well-deserved reasons).Of course, CCI and Harris/MediaSpan's JazBox and NewsEditPro products (front end for InDesign and Quark) have database-based advertising- and copy-management systems built in to make things easier on the staff. They frequently suck hard, but at least they're there. A straight-ahead free-software solution isn't going to have that, especially since there's no way in hell JRC would hire anybody to design that software.
And let's not pretend this is some high-and-mighty moral and/or ethical effort by a newspaper corporation. JRC is considered the worst newspaper to work for. Its corporate philosophy is to squeeze a penny until it bleeds, then waterboard the penny to see if there's anything left in it.

Oops.
It had 200,000 "fans" on FaceBook from the very beginning. That's really funny when you consider how many they actually sold. Apparently not all of the FaceBook fans have gotten the word yet that they can stop astroturfing now:
Tommy Marcus: MAN, I WANT THIS PHONE SO BADLY!! ITS BETTER THAN THE IPHONE AND DROID COMBINED!!!!!!!!!
Or maybe Tommy's being sarcastic. Hard to tell.

Re:Transparency
Nothing gets the government scared like a big steam of bad press
As much as I want to agree there is a thin line between the right to freedom becoming a privilege [of those who know their laws and can effectively challenge law enforcement] or disappearing completely to intimidating tactics we've all witnessed in recent weeks (G20, Toronto)
Now, unless one wants their country joining the likes of Russia, where journalist homicide has become normal practice, with six having been killed this year alone (9 the previous year), giving them as much bad press as possible should be the least we can do stand up for our rights (especially if you don't know them!).
As my grandfather tends to say (quoting somebody famous probably) - "there is just one step from comedy to tragedy". Adapt it as you will to the context, but the UK seems to have taken two steps too many in that direction in recent history. And that's just what made it to the press! -

you have no point. you're an asshole for being an asshole's sake.
you are an ignorant hypocrite.
where exactly are you waiting? scared to tell me? how about you email members of pakistani government with your depictions of muhammad and your exact location? rely on your perceived cloak of invisibility you believe the wires provide you with too much, John Luke Greco? a man who yearns for nuclear war so much that he wears "atomic city" tshirts depicting atomic exploisions...
you are NOTHING.

pathetic, and pretty shameful that I have to share a gender with pricks of that magnitude, but it's not as if ignorance discriminates based on skill in a field. it's the willful idiocy that really gets to me.

Personal Representation
May I suggest Personal Representation, in which each citizen can choose their own personal representative who will vote on their behalf, in much the same way that shares are voted at a stockholder's meeting. Alternately, a person could hold on to their own vote and vote as they like, but only representatives with a minimum number of votes would be allowed a seat in Congress or allowed to sponsor a bill - everyone else would have to submit their votes remotely.
With this system, almost everyone would have a representative that they approve of. Persons with multiple, conflicting personalities would still be out of luck.
I tried to stir up some interest on Facebook, but didn't have much luck:

You've never heard of pipl.com or spokeo, have you David of Tieton, WA? Is this your Facebook?
Took me all of 120 seconds to get your docs because you didn't post AC and I got it for free. Verizon's lawyers have money to hire professional private investigators in order to instigate litigation against someone who violates an illegal contract.
Welcome to the real world. Mom's basement isn't so cozy anymore, is it?
-
Re:Privacy? Really?
The issue is not about an expectation of privacy. It's about an expectation of anonymity, which is reasonable. Ultimately, this information was gained by way of warrantless wiretapping, or a crawler with access to federal data, or some other mechanism unavailable to the general public.
Hold on there. Facebook is anonymous? I haven't seen the kids page, but who is to say he didn't have his name and city, maybe an e-mail address or two on there.
Go this group page I want to kill my teacher! and click on almost any members page where you can typically find their first and last name as well as their hometown. Why would it not be legitimate for law enforcement to scan all members pages for more specific threat language and investigate?
A first and last name, typically a photo and a hometown is likely more than enough to identify a subject -- throw face recognition and a database of school id photos and you are good to go. I don't see anything wrong with that.

Sarah Palin knows the reason for the spill....phew
Well, Sarah has figured out the real reason for the Gulf oil spill, and that reason is those of us who actually care about the environment.
No really, she's serious. We just need to let the oil companies drill unrestricted pretty much wherever and whenever they want, sans restictions and we wouldn't have these problems. Thank God we have a genius like Sarah to tell us unwashed slobs what the truth is.
That unrestricted oil drilling is safe, clean and green!

Silver Lining?
Maybe this is the final push we need to actually invest money as a notion in alternative energy?
Or not... if the right wing gets involved.

Re:nothing of this sort will happen again?
Not even something like this? and that's just with a 10 second search.
Did you use a proxy in Pakistan to find that?
-
Re:Isn't anyone going to check the facts?
Oops, I didn't get the whole link copied.
Now you can click the functional link and see the page (instead of going to Facebook and searching "Everyone Draw" and have it pop up as first result.)
I'd never been to the group page before today.

Re:pathetic
They didn't do a very good job of it.
(yes, you likely need to be logged into facebook)
-
'nothing of this sort will happen in the future'
Well there's a challenge if I ever heard one. Just how close to "this sort" can happen before triggering the Facebook Bureau of Morality-style censorship police?
To start, I expect a "We apologize that this picture of Mohammad would have offended you if we were allowed to show it" page, with a blank image or maybe a big question mark.
Which, of course, people will still find offensive.
-
Isn't anyone going to check the facts?
http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/pages/Everyone-Draw-Mohammed-day-May-20/
Oh look. NOT deleted. Doesn't anyone do their freaking homework before going off the deep end? The Facebook group appears to have never been removed or deleted.
-
Re:The right thing? No. Profit!
So as soon as the furor has died down, and the controversy is no longer driving as much traffic to Facebook as Pakistan's ban reduced it, Facebook decides to "do the right thing". The right thing, that is, to make the numbers.
Yes, Facebook sure has done all they can to eliminate the group.
I rather enjoyed deluding myself that Facebook was standing up for free expression, denouncing idiotic religious extremism, etc., but I now realize the folly of that thinking.
That was pretty silly given that Facebook's founder thinks his users are idiots.
Thank you, Facebook, for restoring my faith in the utterly amoral nature of American business.
Maybe Zuckerberg thinks it's holy to make money.
-

Re:If you want a data center in Oregon...
How you managed to read that I was suggesting that there weren't any and I was somehow lamenting that fact is beyond me. How you turned my post questioning the choice of location into "telling others how to conduct their business" is mystifying. You must be great fun in person when someone asks "why?"
To summarize my post and possibly increase your reading comprehension: I questioned why anyone would build a data center in California. I provided an example of an alternative that I was familiar with.
Since you seem to think that I was suggesting that there aren't any big data center projects here, I'll do the name-drops: Google, Amazon, Facebook, Intel, and Mission West all have or are constructing data centers here. There are more, of course, but those are well-known.

Re:Sounds unreasonable
>> You can't be fired for things you said on your Facebook page if your page is set to private
> You think setting your profile to "private" will make sure that only your friends see your status? That's cute.
Case in point, happened 3-4 days ago:
A bunch of screen shots, from Facebook 'status updates' were posted online.
The updates are from Police officers (men+women) talking about an ongoing, 33-day strike at the University of Puerto Rico. Many of the 'avatars' on the Facebook pages show the officers in uniform.
Most of the comments are... incriminating, to say the least. The one that most wind has caught (debated as to whether the account was hacked or not), is an officer boasting about cracking some skulls soon. (headed to the strike??)
Are the Police officers liable?
Will they be punished? Should they?
Have they received additional friends requests?
All questions the world wants to know...Facebook link to the profile pics (has some tracking numbers in it, yet I don't know a way to remove them while still directing to the Facebook photo album hosting them).

Pretty Simple to Me
Facebook's problem is that its "lots of options" are spread over about 5 different sections of your profile in various sub-categories and with a wide variety of titles ranging from obvious to cryptic - choice is no good if you can't figure out what you're choosing from.
Alright well, I actually have a Facebook account and I've actually set the privacy settings. They promise to make it simpler (how, I'll never know) but the way it currently works is that you have a menu of six categories. They are:
-
Personal Information and Posts
Control who can see your photos and videos, and who can post to your wall -
Contact Information
Control who can contact you on Facebook and see your contact information and email -
Friends, Tags and Connections
Control whether your friends, tags and connections display on your profile -
Search
Control who can see your search result on Facebook and in search engines -
Applications and Websites
Control what information is available to Facebook-enhanced applications and websites -
Block List
Control who can interact with you on Facebook
Now, if you click on any of them it breaks each of those down into sub categories. This is all explained fairly well, by the way. And on each of these sub categories they have drop downs to let you see who sees that sub category of items on your Facebook page:
- Everyone
- Friends of Friends
- Only Friends
- Customize
Pretty straight forward but that last one lets you get into lists and some more complicated stuff.
So please tell me what is confusing about that, how it could be better and how that's "spread out"? -
