Re:salt - water heat exchanger: tricky
You missed the whole point about storing sunlight energy overnight in the form of hot salt. This plant claims 99% energy storage efficiency. The other way I've heard to store energy is to pump water into a reservoir. Sodium beats that because you don't have the motor inefficiency losses coming and going. I guess it depends on economics to decide which comes out on top. The holding tank for sodium is a lot more expensive than for water.

Re:Pretty light on detail
I'm with you, I wanted more info. I found a page with a little more technical information about how this works: http://www-stud.fht-esslingen.de/projects/alt_energy/sol_thermal/powertower.html

Solar Power Tower II - rested, ready and willing

Here in the mid-west small communities are drying up and blowing away because of the collapse of the farming economy. All the small farms are being/have been bought up by the huge multi-national conglomerates like Cargil, etc. The ex-farmers are moving to town and applying at Walmart for jobs.
This trend could be reversed by setting up 10-50MW SPTII sites all over the mid-West, or even the entire country, in these small rural communities. The technology is similar to that of farm equipment, and the ex-farmers could begin "farming" electricity and Hydrogen. Even under overcast conditions these power stations develop 1/3rd their max power. Excess power can be stored in several forms.
While high tension power lines (450KV) could connect regional areas most power would be produced locally.
Our national electrical power would then be terrorist proof. -

Re:switch to suseSuSE is currently available for free via FTP download. It takes a while to get a system installed and up nd running, but IMHO, SuSE 9.3 is definitely worth it.
I downloaded the DVD image here: ftp://ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de/pub/Mirrors/ftp.s
u se.com/pub/suse/i386/9.3/iso/SUSE-9.3-Eval-DVD.iso BTW, the "eval" in the filename is misleading, because this is not a crippled version of the commercial release: it contains the non-free software (acrobat reader, realplayer, etc.).
I was a former ubuntu hoary user but I switched to SUSE as the free dvd came out. To me, SUSE is one year ahead of the other distros, due to YAST.

A few on #java from Quakenet
A few generous people on Quakenet offered these to the public-
Here is one for win32 users.
http://gd.tuwien.ac.at/softeng/eclipse/I20050627-1 435/eclipse-SDK-I20050627-1435-win32.zip
There's also a magnet link (which is supported by most peer to peer programs such as Limewire and Ares) located at
magnet:?xt=urn:btih:BW6W3QUP7CD23KZRGZG4BK7M4LX2 WB K3
If those don't work try using Net magnet 4.0.
One of those links takes you directly to a win32 download. However, for the Linux developers as well (there are a few different variations of it in the directory so please select one to your liking)
NOTE: These also have variations of eclipse for the Mac and win32 users as well.

Re:Oil
I like your statements, but I think mis-understand the point of a hydrogen economy. In programming terms, it provides an abstraction layer so that a variety of backends can be used to provide energy input. Or, as I frequently hear as a criticism of hydrogen: "Hydrogen isn't an energy source, it's an energy carrier, dumbass."
We use oil for two purposes: 1) It's an energy carrier pre-loaded with a great deal of stored energy thanks to heat, pressure, and time, and 2) it's an awesome supply of chemicals we've come to rely on. Hydrogen replaces the first role, and, as you say, the energy has to come from somewhere. It can come from a whole lot of somewheres.
Hydrogen isn't really important to the hydrogen economy. It's just chemically convenient. The point of the hydrogen economy is to derive energy from non-depletable sources to supply electrical needs, and to store excess energy as hydrogen, like a battery, or otherwise export hydrogen as an energy medium. We could export oil instead of hydrogen, but that's more of a pain in the ass to produce, and less efficient to use.
Candidate energy generation techologies include:
- Solar Power Towers (thermal energy collection and steam generation): Commercially pioneered by Boeing. Easy to follow technical description of a small scale 10MW retrofitted prototype. Boeing's full-scale designs are 15-100+ MW per installation. They provide power throughout the night, and through inclimate weather.
- Tidal Generators
- Geothermal Energy
As a suppliment, photovoltaic cells can be used to generate electricity or even extract hydrogen through electrolysis with excess energy during peak hours. As many know, photovoltaics are relatively economically neutral--they don't produce more energy than they cost to produce over 10 years. Of course, photovolatic panels last as long as they aren't destroyed, and after five years continue to produce 60-80% of their initial voltage output until they are destroyed, which can easily be much much much longer than ten years.

Re:Solar Power
I don't think that this technology would ever have much of anything to do with solar planels. This paint probably can't behave as a photovoltaic source in the least. It would probably be more useful as the foci point at a large solar plant such as this. If you could sqweek another 2. something percent from a facility that produces 10MW, you might be onto something. Of course, that depends on whether it's a. resilant at very high temperatures, and b. cost effective.

The Ultimate in Hard Drive Encryption
Even the purpose of this software is cunningly disguised.
Masquerading as a set of utilities for mounting an ext2 partition from MS-DOS, Ltools is guaranteed to make your linux filesystems completely inaccessible to anybody.
One of the most glaring insecurities in most disk encryption systems is the user themselves. They may simply be threatened with hot lubricating jelly and will reveal the all important encryption keys. Not so with Ltools - even the user is unable to retrieve the information once it is encrypted.
Simply install the Ltools package on your windows partition and then type 'lmkdir etc'. I did this yesterday and believe me, there's no way anybody's accessing my root filesystem! -
Re: I've been tryingAnyone have *any* idea how to get a volume knob to tweak software?
The author of TerminatorX (a digital audio "scratching" application) has some details on how to convert a mouse to use it to scratch samples with a turntable. Maybe you could apply bits of this to what you want to do

Real linux and hiphop
Okay, maybe the article was a stretch, but this isn't: TerminatorX (my favorite linux audio program). Make virtual turntables from audio files and scratch them like vinyl records with your mouse!
Linux meets hiphop? Yeah, now we're talking

Re:This bugs me
Sorry to say this, but I know plenty of musicians who use windows for music production. Live. Even such "Kiddie Grade" programs, like MixMan Studio, are amizingly effective if you use your own samples, and throw a little beat matching with wax on it. Most of the Mac stuff is production quality, and the BeOS stuff is still not too well known.
So why is linux good for this? Simple:
- Multithreaded across multiple processors. Win 98 can't do this, and NT won't support a lot of hardware, or run some of the software.
- Efficiency. Running X with a lightweight WM, and very little other stuff will generally beat out Windows in terms of OS overhead, and available clock cylces to mix it up wit' (,yo!).
- Stability. I have had stuff crash on stage for me. Uncool.
OK, so what does windows have going for it? Glad you asked:
- Lots of software. 'nuff said.
- Support for peripherals. Nothing sucks more than the sound chips in a laptop. Almost any outboard processor would be better. The real high-end stuff like the Event Layla, won't run on Linux. Forget USB devices.
So if I wuz going to sit down and write my ultimate appz for live performance, what would I do? 1] KeyKit for MIDI support. 2] Something like TerminatorX for loops, but with the ability to sync to a clock. 3] a software synth like re-birth. Add some turntables, and my board, and life will be good.
opinions? Am I wrong? Better ideas?
-
but oh yes, yes!
terminatorX is mmm-mmm good!I'd love to see that pile of slick grow into a live performance trend.

Re:equipment?
TerminatorX
I'm having compile issues with it, but most people get it to work.

Re:Europeans, Canadians, and self loathing America
>The average income in Germany is higher than in the USA.
Before taxes or after?
Both. Not to forget the better social security and health insurance.
>The TV, the telephone, the light bulb, the computer, the web and the Linux kernel were all developed in Europe.
TV, was inventd by a man named Philo Farnsworth, he was an American farmer.
Check your facts. TV was invented by Manfred von Ardenne and first presented to the world on the Funkausstellung 1931 in Berlin. See here.
Bell was obviously an American, as was Edison.
Sure, but Bell didn't invent the telephone, Phillip Reis did. And Edison didn't invent the lightbulb either, it was an engineer named G oebel who presented the first lightbulb in 1854.
Both Bell and Edison were just very successful in marketing other people's inventions, just as Microsoft is today.
Did I mention who invented the car?
Early computers were just an evolution of a chinese invention.
The first working computer was been built by Konrad Zuse, though.
The soviets did contribute much ot the war effort, But who stormed the beach at Normandy?
I do not underestimate the influence of US intervention in WWII, but you shouldn't overestimate it. After all, when the US started intervention, the Soviets had been in the war for five years, and the odds had turned to them. Who stormed Berlin? -
