A shout out to the

How the celebrating 'arabs' was shot in 1991! [indymedia.org.il]
Post it as many times as you want, there is no proof whatsoever in that article. It is less credible than a poorly written slashdot post: no evidence, no links, no documentation.
Meanwhile the mainstream INTERNATIONAL press has closely documented that the Palestinian celebrations are real:
Fox
PBS
Middle East News Line
Your foolish radical left wing fairy tales are melting in the sunlight of unbiased international journalism. When your statements are revealed as lies, what does that say about your motivations?
If we do not effectively retaliate against the terrorists, they will continue to attack us up to and including using nuclear weapons. Picture the face of the pilot of plane two, expertly banking his plane so that the maximum amount of fuel would be deposited in the building. Imagine what he would do with a Ryder truck and a nuclear weapon.
He would drive to Los Angeles with a smile on his face. This WILL happen if people like you are allowed to poison the public with lies.
Here's to stopping you. -
Re:War versus Civil Rights
We did declare war. Congress passed a War Powers Act: "...the president is authorized to use all necessary and appropriate force against those nations, organizations, or persons he determines planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks...".

Re:hope you didn't breath in
Here's an article from Fox News on how asbestos would have saved lives. The irony is that all the hysteria was caused by a few "asbestos related" deaths is now superceded by the number of deaths at the WTC Tuesday, which probably would have been reduced because of increased evacuation time had the panic not occured.

2nd amendment!
Here's a totally contrariwise view to the mainstream: to prevent terrorism, allow weapons on planes.
Not guns (depressurization, fuel, fancy electrics and hydraulics that don't take well to bullet holes) and not tazers (fuel sparks) but such things as knives and tranquilizer dart pistols should be allowed, even encouraged. All staff should be prominently armed and trained in weapons use as a matter of course; it would be much harder to take over a plane full of passengers and staff armed to the teeth. "More guns less crime" works groundside, and I expect it would work airborne too.
On as positive note, "don't sacrifice freedom" is already spreading as a concept well beyond the confines of slashdot: witness this fox news article: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,34300,00.html -

Albert-Laszlo BarabasiThis Barabasi guy's an ass. All he does is sensationalist pop-physics crap. Look at his website. The organization of handclapping (featured at ABCNews and FoxNews), sandcastles, and internet topology and attack work (discussed at Slashdot here). This guy just jumps between pop-science subjects and eats up press coverage of his crap.
Can we stop talking about him now? -

Re:A Bad SignI remember this story that appeared when Microsoft announced they'd be shutting down their free ListBot service. From the quote you get the impression Microsoft is planning on turning Hotmail into a paid service too.
In the past few months, Microsoft been very open about its plans to "migrate" users of its free services to paid services. Most notably, the company is hoping that those who use its free Hotmail e-mail and MSN Messenger instant messaging service will start using a planned set of paid services called .NET.

Of course, this is the same Senator Torricelli who is being investigated for illegal donations to his campaign. One DOJ official called him the "most corrupt politician in America". And that's with some tough competition, I'm sure!

Re:a contrary view
You've provided a lot of links - tell me, are the dead tree news outlets saying the same?
Several of the links provided earlier were from newspapers. Here's the local paper's take on the matter (of course, since "local"=="Las Vegas", it follows that there'd be an article here):
http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Jul-18-Wed-200
1 /news/16563325.htmlWhat about Television - where has the DMCA and the Sklyarov arrest been mentioned?
Can't say, as most TV news is slanted so far to the left I don't waste my time with it. Local TV news might've covered it, but I couldn't say one way or the other. (Actually, someone else posted a link to KTNV's website in one of the other Sklyarov threads here on
/., so I guess the local TV news media have covered the matter.) The only TV news program I follow with any regularity is Fox News Sunday, and their website indicates they didn't cover this issue. -
Re:Kyoto Treaty
Perhaps your confusing Slashdot with another site? This is News for Nerds here. Yeah, I know, Kyoto will affect everyone, and I'm so shallow and politically naive for thinking it doesn't necessarily need to be discussed here, whatever. The fact is, I can check out any number of sites to get my Kyoto news. I come to Slashdot to read interviews about 20 year old games.
Incidently, Slashdot wasn't doing the interviewing here, rather they just linked to another site which conducted the interview. -
Re:How originalThe short-term "benefits" of these megacorps often hide long-term effects that we will pay for long after this crop of shareholders cashes in on their stock dividends. An example is the loss of rainforest land and subsequent reduction in biodiversity due to slash and burn cattle ranching.
Here's the problem with this: The short term benefits are real. The long-term effects you mention are largely imaginary and based on a fear-mongering campaign by the eco-profiteers.
And BTW, I don't really like McDonalds or big corporations. But they're being falsely used as bogeymen by people who want you to sign away your freedom in exchange for "protection".

U.S. Govt mandates tracking all wireless devices
Why the mods decided to post this and not the below articled I submitted, I'll never know:
Please mod it up...
U.S. Government mandates tracking of all wireless devices by 2005.
Foxnews has an article that cell-phone manufacturers are under a federal mandate to equip mobiles with location-tracking technology beginning this October. By 2005, 95 percent of all cell phones must be able to be traced with an accuracy of about 1,000 feet or better.
The hidden thing is these GPS modules look to be required in all cell type devices, including palm pilots and maybe even wireless communication parts for notebook computers. -
Indymedia raided by FBI
The Indymedia center in Seattle was raided by the FBI. Not only that but the federal government has required that all phones have a tracking device by 2005 We should not support a government that hacks into the citizens of other countries computers. It is only matter of time before they do it to us. If they haven't already started. Welcome to the corporate police state.

There'll be alot of "You know what I mean, right ?" , nose flicking, secret pig latin codes, lipograms, monkeys-at-a-typewriter, Voynich artwork, McLuhan collages, the Beatle's song "I Am The Walrus", or on the darker side, like Frankenstein's monster; something that lived without first consulting planned parenthood.
Memetic epidemics. The RDF stuff is interesting.
Imagine though the problems with semantic grammars.
In Britain and many of its colonies, they drive on the left and sit on the right. In Japan, Turkey etc. they use Lukasiewicz's RPN form: (SOV) Subject-Object-Verb which can be very tricky for "someone who drives on the right side of the road" to get used to. Alot of semantic accidents will happen.Driving with diplomatic immunity.

Let's get some things straightThis US-China standoff crap really drives me nuts. What's worse, though, is that some Americans support our offering a formal apology for the incident.
First, since we have neither talked to our crewmen nor examined our airplane, we cannot know who was at fault. It would be inappropriate to apologise in such a situation.
Second, this is not about egos. It isn't about detainees. Let's call these guys what they are - hostages. China is holding our servicemen and women hostage. And for what?
Third, we were operating in international airspace. Notice the bolded word in that sentence - international. If you catch a spy inside your country, you can jail or expel him. However, it's a commonly accepted practice to spy on countries from outside their borders. There's nothing wrong with it!
Fourth, you don't use a semi-truck to knock a Porsche off the road. Similarly, to think that our klunky, large P3 (the semi) would run into their highly maneuverable, high-speed fighter jet (the Porsche) is ridiculous. There are reports that their fighter jet came to within three feet of our plane twice before the two collided.
Fifth, there's no reason to think that the Chinese will willingly and safely return our men and women, were we to offer some sort of ludicrious apology. Anyone who thinks China is our ally hasn't been paying attention.
You people who get your news from CNN or the major networks need to retune your TV sets and web browsers to FOX News Channel.

Re:Budget Problems
According to Fox News the NEAR was built under the 'faster, better, cheaper' philosophy. IMO, that philosophy doesn't mean that the craft are any less robust (generally, if a satellite payload survives launch, it's structurally sound enough to handle anything during spaceflight)... it just means that there are less 'bells and whistles' built in.

Python!I like to teach in Python! A much better language, that has the advantage of no compile phase (confusing to the beginner).
And, it wasn't developed by a self-avowed Pedophile, the way Java was. In all seriousness, Java's association with pedophilia makes it unsuitable for high school classroom use.

Re:save the futureI don't see how the ACLU fits into this.
Aren't they the ones that are against the traditional idea of civil liberties and way of doing things? If they're at all consistant, they'll be pro-DMCA.
Here's a link to some things that the ACLU may very well be involved with.
I can see sending money to the EFF, but certianly not the ACLU.

Don't forget who writes this software!
The FBI hires admitted, convicted pedophiles to write software like this. Now, if they hire people who got CAUGHT to write this software, how sophisticated can it be?
-
I don't have much faith in the FBI's software! After all, they have to ask convicted, admitted pedophile, Patrick Naughton inventor of Java (the language of choice for pedophiles), to write software for them.
Imagine the logic here! Pedophile Patrick was supposed to be some sort of software genius, yet he was tricked into talking to a Fed in an IRC chat room. How smart could he be?

Re:Surprise
But that wasn't my point. My point is that in any situation where it comes down to a civilian's word against a cop in a court of law, the cop will come out the winner, every time, no questions asked.
Not anymore, at least not in Los Angeles:The conviction of three Los Angeles police officers on corruption charges represents a watershed for the city, legal observers said Wednesday, because it signals that jurors here no longer automatically give credence to the men and women who are sworn to serve and protect.

The author failed to read the article!from the article:
The machines initially failed to read ballots on which voters chose to vote a straight party ticket, but also chose at least one candidate from another party, election officials said.
Note that it says that the voters chose a candidate from another party, not the machine. I could see how you might read it as Jamie did, but let's avoid spreading any more misinformation!

Re:Skewing to Gore
However, since you posted this,
the gap continues to narrow according
to CNN. Gore has been "finding"
votes even in heavily republican counties.
Now you can argue that it's just that
democrats are stuffing the ballots faster
than republicans... Which frankly
is what I think is going on. Personally
given all the accusations on both sides each
state that was with 10,000 votes should
re-cast their ballots. It would probably
cost Gore the election, but I think it's only
fair.
You can view the by county results at

Skewing to Gore
In any case, the recount results are skewing heavily to Gore, so my whole point may be moot. Let's hope so.
That's because the big counties -- which went heavily to Gore -- have already reported. For the most part, the counties remaining are smaller, rural counties which were won handily by Bush. See for yourself. -
Electoral College- unfair from day oneThe electoral college should be abolished and true one person-one vote direct election should be adopted instead. See this great op-ed article in the New York Times written by a Yale law school professor explaining just why it should be replaced.
Basically, the main arguments are:
1. The EC was designed to help one group- white southern males.
2. Southern states gained disproportionately more power than northern states. Slaves in the south were allowed to be counted as three fifths of a man in order to award Southern states more electoral college votes.
3. Direct elections make states encourage its more of its citizens to vote because the more who vote in that state, the bigger voice that state has whereas in the EC system, no matter how many people vote, there are the same number of EC votes awarded for that state.
4. There is a fallacy that the EC system encourage candidates to care more about local state issues than in a direct system but candidates would still have concern for regional issues of the northwest, south, midwest, etc. to get their votes.Read it and decide for yourself. It's an interesting piece.
-
Re:Could spell end for electoral college..
It was pointed out here the other day that the electoral college was established out of fear that the US population would be unable to educate themselves about the candidates enough to make an informed decision.
That was one of the reasons the Electoral College was created. The other reason, the one I've come to see during this election and the one that has changed my mind on the issue, is that the EC prevents the smaller, less populous states from being drowned out by the larger states. The EC prevents what Thomas Jefferson (IIRC) called the "tyranny of the majority". Thus, the EC is a good thing.
Look at the Electoral map on FoxNews.com. Gore has the popular majority, but only in approximately 20 states. Bush has the popular majority in the other 28. Without the EC, the political voices of the 28 states that voted the majority to Bush would be ignored in favor of the more populous states. In other words, Americans in less populous states would be shut out of the process. By seriously reducing the number of available votes, and making sure those votes are more or less evenly distributed, it is possible to make sure the voices of smaller states is heard.

A "Mostly Open Source" concept...Actually, there's a really insightful Cue:Cat article at Foxnews today.
Doug Davis, the president of the Technology Group at DC, is interviewed and he refers to the developer's license as "mostly open source" because of the restrictions about any scans going through DC servers.

And I thought the allure of open source was the ability to create software for the good of the community...

"Both" Reform Parties Nix E-Votes
According to an AP wire story on Yahoo, "both" Reform parties have rejected the electronic votes, charging fraud. Not a very promising start.I personally do not trust politicians to manage any type of electroinc voting. Bill Clinton, uses "Buddy", the name of his dog, as the pass phrase for his smart card ID system. I know this because he told the national press, while using this pass phrase to sign a digital signature bill into law. Here as elsewhere, Clinton sets the best example he is capable of...
If I had to design an "e-voting" system, I would require a fingerprint-verified PGP key from every e-voter, and accept only PGP signed documents that validate correctly. The overhead on checking the keys would be signifigant: At minimum I would require a notarized statement bearing the user's key fingerprint, and random spot checks of at least 5% of these fingerprints via mail or phone, to detect organized fraud.
My system would leave anyone who can't or won't comply, out in the cold where they belong. No one who can't be bothered to install a secure open-source crypto app, can be trusted to maintain even tne most primitive safeguards against the theft of their certificates & passwords. E-voting must be treated as a privelige earned by compliance to security requirements, not some sort of "right" that We The Consumers were born with.

Internet Coverage on this story
The story was generated based on several presentations given at the General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union (IAU). The total number of new planets discovered is 10, including the double planet system of twin Saturn-sized planets.
The information was actually released to the various news agencies last week, but was under strict embargo until early this morning.
This brings the total number of extrasolar planets to 50.
Here're the original source links to this story:
