Re:Why we sadly switched to Linux (Redhat)
Getting the machines to talk to our LDAP Server and Kerberos KDC (an OS X Server that does our central directory system) is a joke...
Which machines, RedHat or BSD? And does "joke" mean "difficult"?
It sounds like you tried to make a reasonable decision based on your needs and situation, but you don't mention any specific problems you had with your BSD machines. You mention that OpenBSD "just didn't perform", but (IMO) you should only be using OpenBSD if you have already found that the vastly more popular and better performing FreeBSD does not suit your security needs (I think it's safe to say that most sysadmins relegate OpenBSD to running firewalls and lower-traffic dedicated systems). If you're running multiple servers, you should read this section of the FreeBSD Handbook about multi-machine setup. You should also invest in a copy of Automating Unix and Linux Administration and, if you want a good introduction to "real world" FreeBSD administration, you can't beat Absolute BSD - I still refer to this friendly and straightforward book constantly.
The worst thing about a BSD is how streamlined/stripped down the core is, as making network configuration changes is just harder/more time-consuming, with multiple files to change.
Again, your problem with BSD would be more clear if you gave an actual example. For instance, if by "network configuration" you mean changing the basic network paramaters like IP address, subnet mask, default router, etc., there are actually *fewer* files to change under BSD (it's all in rc.conf) vs. the unnecessarily complex per-interface config files used by RedHat. Both systems have the traditional hosts and resolv.conf files, so there is no difference there. Perhaps you are referring to some custom RedHat administration program that edits the config files for you. One reason that such things (for the most part) don't exist in BSD is that the BSD config file layout is so clear and simple that they are just not needed. Also, if memory serves, to install those fancy RedHat admin tools, you have to install X (even you only want the command-line versions) which is of course a ridiculous and, IMO, unacceptable requirement.
Anyway, I would enjoy reading your response and trying to find out if your choice of RedHat was based on actual advantages provided by RedHat or a lack of experience with BSD. Although I am admittedly part of the "elite" FreeBSD user base, please don't mistake any part of this post for OS-bashing or other petty stuff. I'm interested in your experience because I think it's probably representative of many others who decide that RedHat is easier to use than *BSD. -

Is it any wonder people think Linux users are a bunch of flaming homosexuals when its fronted by obviously gay losers like these?! BSD has a mascot who leaves us in no doubt that this is the OS for real men! If Linux had more hot chicks and gorgeous babes then maybe it would be able to compete with BSD! Hell this girl should be a model!
Linux is a joke as long as it continues to lack sexy girls like her! I mean just look at this girl! Doesn't she excite you? I know this little hottie puts me in need of a cold shower! This guy looks like he is about to cream his pants standing next to such a fox. As you can see, no man can resist this sexy little minx. Don't you wish the guy in this pic was you? Are you telling me you wouldn't like to get your hands on this ass?! Wouldn't this just make your Christmas?! Yes doctor, this uber babe definitely gets my pulse racing! Oh how I envy the lucky girl in this shot! Linux has nothing that can possibly compete. Come on, you must admit she is better than an overweight penguin or a gay looking goat! Wouldn't this be more liklely to influence your choice of OS?
With sexy chicks like the lovely Ceren you could have people queuing up to buy open source products. Could you really refuse to buy a copy of BSD if she told you to? Personally I know I would give my right arm to get this close to such a divine beauty!

Does this mean the trolls are right for once?
From http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articl
e s/committers-guide/archs.html:
Architectures reaching end of life may also be moved from Tier 1 status to Tier 2 status as the availability of resources to continue to maintain the system in a Production Quality state diminishes.
Not to be a troll or anything, but it would seem to me that "reaching end of life" is basically a fancy way of saying "dying." So does this mean FreeBSD/Alpha is dying? If so, someone ought to post a eulogy in honor of the dead or something. -
No Posts--We can already install software
I would speculate that this thread has so few posts not because BSD is dying, but because any BSD user dedicated enough to browse slashdot and find this "article" hidden in the BSD section has probably already figured out how to install software (even linux binaries, if you're in to that sort of thing
;p).
Whereas adherents of certain [cough] linux distribtions have started flame threads longer than this one over the comparative merits of their various package systems, the BSD users have little to say on this topic, because the current system works just fine (not to mention the treatment of this topic in the FreeBSD Handbook is more informative than the article). -
Oh Please
Oh please, can we all just get over the BSD mascot?
I mean seriously, the girl is looking 12!! Do you really get a kick of girls like these?
Posted AC to avoid a holy war against my karma. -

Definitely.
Gentoo's Handbook is the highest quality linux doc I've ever used. This kind of documentation really needs to replace the tired old HOWTO system. I'm faily sick of searching google for tips on how to set up my webcam under linux, only to get a HOWTO that references the 2.2 kernel.
That being said, the only thing that beats it is FreeBSD's handbook. If you want to learn how unix works, be it UNIX or BSD or linux, FreeBSD's handbook will lay down all the basics for you. It still serves me well 5 years after I first read through it.
Here is the english version. I encourage everyone to look through it. -
Re:Java support is still lacking...
This is slowly changing.
Native FreeBSD java -
Re:Java support is still lacking...
I don't know for sure, but I think this was a problem in FreeBSD 4.9, which was solved for 4.10 and for 5.2.x. Also, it might relate to which version of the Linux base you install. Stable FreeBSD tends to install version 6.x of linux-base, while I usually upgrade to 8.x, which is roughly compatible with RedHat 8.x.
Remember, though: you are not forced to use Linux emulation to run Java. You use linux emulation to install Java 1.4.2, but then you can compile a FreeBSD-native version (although I have never gone as far as that ;)). You might want to spend some time on http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-java/ -
Re:FreeBSD is an OS, Linux isn't....Nvidia has FreeBSD drivers available. However for ATI drivers, there still remains a need for people to visit the Linux Driver feedback page and ask for FreeBSD support.
As both a FreeBSD user and Gentoo user, I think the best description would be that Gentoo is BSD for Linux users. As a humourous aside, some friends have also started describing Gentoo as "ricenix: 2Fast2Optimized".
;-)Gentoo is laid out fairly logically (no idea if it follows the Linux Standards Base though). The main benefit is the total control you gain over your installation - much like you gain with BSD (hence, BSD for Linux users). Though it is achieved through the remarkable Portage package management system, vs FreeBSD which is a wholly maintained o/s, with a very large "ports" system.
The only thing that keeps me from using FreeBSD on my workstation is that I do play some games on Linux, and write software to support game playing on a local Australian gaming network. For those that don't need the fluff that's supported on Linux (games being a primary example), almost everything else is available under FreeBSD. But to save you extra work, Gentoo is probably the way to go (easy to manage once installed through portage).
-
Re:Java support is still lacking...Troll. FreeBSD has Java support. I think you still have to download the source from Sun and put it into
/usr/ports/distfiles before you can install the port due to licensing restrictions, but it does work.I don't believe (although I could well be wrong. Please correct me if I am) that it uses the new KSE in the 5.x branch, so it's still slower than on other platforms for multithreaded things.

The Ken Brown-ism that Kills me
"Hybrid source code" is a phrase coined by former Tocqueville Chairman Gregory Fossedal. The term refers to any product with a license that attempts to mix free and proprietary source code at the same time.
Would this be like taking a free TCP/IP stack and mixing it into a proprietary OS?

FreeBSD jails
IMHO, BSD's jail() is one of the more interesting developments in recent versions -- at least for an internet service provider.
For those of you unfamiliar, check it out. It's very much like User Mode Linux and allows running virtual servers within a larger server. Many colocation/virtual server providers (e.g. take, your, pick) use FreeBSD jails to provide low-cost root-access hosts for customers. This really has revolutionized cost effectiveness of large scale hosting!
There have been various limitations with FreeBSD jails when they first appeared. There were glitches with information leaking across jails. There's a limit to a single IP address, inability to do raw socket operations or even ping/traceroute, and some glitches with a couple system calls used by major applications like Postfix.
But my understanding is that 5.x seriously improves jail support, especially from a resource efficiency perspective. One of my BSD developer buddies also tells me that he's fixing raw socket support. Keep an eye on the jail feature... -
Re:I like ityeah, you are right in some respects - there wouldn't have been any 'surprises' if he bothered to read the handbook. Everything about slices and partitioning scheme is described in details. On the other hand, I don't think it is an unfavorable or biased review.
He does have some very positive things about FreeBSD, like its being the fastest distro he has ever tried. Like it or not, this is my personal experience too - it just seems faster compared to my earlier linux distroes (on the desktop - my primary use of FreeBSD) on the same machine. This isn't exactly a popular opinion around here - well around anywhere, now I expect tons of quotes of synthetic benchmarks - yeah, I know about fefe, and no I DON'T HAVE ANY PROOF! - but this is how it feels, can't help it

One more FreeBSD 4.X release
From 4.10-Release Announcement:
The current plans are for one more FreeBSD 4.X release which will be FreeBSD 4.11-RELEASE. It is expected the upcoming FreeBSD 5.3 release will have reached the maturity level most users will be able to migrate to 5.X.
So probably no more new-feature-development in 4.X. Just keeping it stable. -
Re:Big claps to Mandrake ...He's probably referring to the fact that for a home user today, to get a well-integrated desktop Linux system (like what many of us used RedHat for), we have very, very limited options.
Today, if you want a freely available desktop-oriented Linux distribution, you have to hunt far and wide. If you looked a week ago, you would have Fedora Core 2, which suffers from this major bug, Mandrake 10 Community - which is a pain to update. Knoppix is good but it's not really meant for installation though it can be done. A quick look on SuSe's downloads page shows that they do offer it free (minus commercial components), but it's either in LiveCD format or has to be installed via FTP.
So, unfortunately today, we don't have the luxury we used to of being able to simply grab the 3 iso's for RedHat and installing them onto our system. Sure we could use Debian, or Gentoo, or even go out on a limb and try FreeBSD - but none of these are desktop-oriented, though you can achieve a nice desktop system if you work at it.
I think that's what he's talking about.

Re:Oh boy.....
Well, it surely comes, but only to *Linux*, not opensource. And, while we're at operating systems: *BSD projects use both CVS and bug tracking system from a long, long time. It's Linus "dislike of versioning systems" (or perhaps, being resistant to good advices), which made Linux-SCO claims as easy. With FreeBSD Web CVS interface, you can do usual things you can do with CVS. For example, review all commits to
/README in FreeBSD (just click here) in the last 9 years. Responsible people, commit dates, commit messages. SCO claiming they did the changes? Don't think so. How about Linux? Yes, Bitkeeper repository. Since when? 2.4.x, if I remember correctly... and the code was already above 20 MB tgz by that time. Pretty late. Well, better late, than never. I'm waiting to see Linux kernel having a "core team", and a central bugzilla... not the mailing list with patches. -
Re:Exhibit Number OneGoogling I found this interesting article: window implementation summary where among other implementations we can read about:
"3.windows for BLIT terminal
Rob Pike of Bell Labs implemented windows for the BLIT terminal.
It uses a segmented bitmap approach.
See The ACM Transactions on Graphics, Vol 2, No 2, Apr 83 ,pp.135-160"
Whatever a BLIT terminal was....
What I find more interesting is that while most of these early implementations of window-like environments seems to be lost somewhere in history, there still is a program called window in FreeBSD which is quite useful. It allows me to split the screen into (possibly overlapping) windows, resize them and move them around, switch focus. Basically what I'd do in microsoft windows, and it comes with the additional benefit of not requring a mouse :-)
It actually comes in handy when I want to tail the output of a number of logfiles at the same time. So I guess that you could say that it is still in use (at least by one person).
Checking main.c it says:"* Copyright (c) 1983, 1993
* The Regents of the University of California. All rights reserved.
*
* This code is derived from software contributed to Berkeley by
* Edward Wang at The University of California," Berkeley.
So it clearly predates the predators. At the moment I'm running two instances of the program so I guess we could even talk about "windows"...

to be tightened up if it hasn't been already, or there maybe
further claims of stolen code made against Linux.

Hot girls, BSD style!

You gave the answer in your questionFree BSD. I don't recommend OpenBSD for a Unix beginner, unless you're building a firewall.
As for Linux, well, you did ask for ease of use. I've tried several Linux distros, and they all failed in one way or another. RedHat was the worst -- the installer got into a nice graphics mode just fine, but somehow couldn't tell XFree86 what settings it used, and subsequently XWindows was a pain in the ass. Perhaps Fedora is better, but somehow I doubt it. Mandrake couldn't recognize my network card to save it's ass (but RedHat could, so a driver is available). SuSE wouldn't let me try without buy (no ISO), so forget them. I wouldn't touch Debian with a 20 foot pole because 1) they're so damn political, and I don't need that crap I just need an OS; 2) they're way behind on the kernel releases; and 3) they're so damn political.
Basically, I'd stay away from any distro that calls itself "GNU/Linux" because their political statement is their #1 priority, and you want the distro to be their #1 priority.

Re:What Do I Do?
Just update CVS from FreeBSD whenever they apply the fix. If FreeBSD haven't made a new release yet, then you might want to turn off public access until it's fixed.
The issue has been announced via the normal announcement channels for FreeBSD and an advisory which explains what to is available. I actually got the FreeBSD advisory before I heard about it on slashdot.
