Learn what the hell words mean.

"The result was the ideal fascist solution." No, actually, it wasn't. "A money machine for insiders" is many things, but that's not fascism.

Fascism is a particular political philosophy, not an organization whose politics you don't like. It places the rights and interests of the state above the rights and interests of the individual, because of a belief that the importance of the state to its citizens supercedes the importance of individual members.

I'm sure there are many, many problems with ICANN that deserve the attention that Mr. Auerbach has given them, and this is not at all meant to detract from that. Using words to insult, rather than carry meaning, bothers me no matter who the hell it comes from.

Don't toss around words without knowing what they refer to.

I'm a little surprised a technical web site would fall for the pure marketing hype. Next we're going to have an article complaining that the Ultra SPARC IIIs run only at 900 MHz and can't play the new space cadet game. That is a fun game it wasnt free but it was worth the money.

I'll shut the fuck up when I am firmly convinced that Open Source is a viable business model. While it has been around forever (30+ years), it doesn't impress a lot of people. I like the idea of Open Source and Free Software, but damn, where is the money?

I'm not purely a capitalistic pig, nor am I the only person with these questions. But, even if I was, I hope my questions make sense. Why are you pissed off? I'm trying to be logical and rational. I'm trying not to fight.

If I am supposed to just "understand" the Open Source movement, then you have lost me. And, you have lost the people I can influence and pursuade. You'd be surprised what that means. Negative comments are like roaches; for every one you read, there are hundreds more hiding.

Don't tell me to shut the fuck up unless you want to lose thousands of people reading my postings. We want answers. We want the truth. What is the truth here? That is what I want to know. What does Open Source offer the Capitalistic Pigs of the world? If you hate this idea, then it is at your peril. If that is against your philosphy, then companies such as AOL, McDonalds and Microsoft will dominate your life. You turn control over to them.

Is this FUD? Anti-Open Source, Pro-Microsoft? Damn! Not all all. Convince me to shut the fuck up, and I will. That's fair.

Number two by what criterion? Second largest number of lines of source code? Number two revenue generator for its distributors? Number two in terms of user popularity, benchmark performance, shaded polygons per second in Half Life, one over the crash rate, votes in the congeniality category, what? Maybe the author means, used or at least installed on more computers than all others, except one? How are dual-boot systems counted, then? Should a server that's been on continuously for the last year get the same count as a laptop that's run once every two weeks? Heck, if you count by the reboots, you just know Win9x is the world champion forever and ever. Etc., etc., etc.

Hey, what happened to Win95, Win 98, and WinME? It's maybe a good sign really that Reuters refuses to dignify these products by so much as including them in the general category of "operating systems." Though if I worked at MS, particularly in the department which has the Augean job of maintaining and extending that farrago of "legacy code," I might be a bit miffed at this slight. But whatever you choose to call them, last I heard, the Win9x branch has always sold a lot more copies than all the NTs put together. Particularly to home users; just try to get a PC with Win2K on it from most consumer outlets.

I suppose NT 4.0 competes with Windows 2000. For example, I actually bought a copy of Win2K with my motherboard, but I'm still using NT 4.0 because thus far I have had no need to change. Mod me down, pelt me with hostile email, I don't give a damn. I think NT 4, once you get it set up at first and so long as you don't mess with it (e.g. download the latest hi-performance video driver beta) is a really adequate desktop OS, could be better, lots better, but it does the job for me.

This, by the way, is the true nightmare of software vendors. God forbid they should ever release a product that's really, really good. For if they do that, and they nearly wholly satisfy their happy customers, why will anyone ever upgrade later on?

But at any rate I just know that the guy who wrote this piece for Reuters wasn't talking about NT 4.0 competing with Win2K; he was talking about (NT + W2K) competing with Linux. I think I know what he meant by context. Too bad that isn't what the writer said, though.

I don't think that's very feasible. Assuming the average person weighs 150 pounds (ludicriously light, but for the purposes of our calculations we will accept). we'll also assume each person is 6 feet tall.

Now, with the basic math out of the way, we'll say that we want to get to about 170 miles outside of the earth's orbit. At that point, we'll be at the point where we can simply hand someone an aerosol can and tell them to point it at the earth and the familiar newtonian physics will take over, propelling him, slowly, to the moon.

But how many people would it take to create a human tower 170 miles up? Well, that's exactly 897600 feet up, and assume we use only one person stacked on top of another, that means that it'll take a mere 149,600 people to get to the moon - not bad, considering how many peope live in India! But, unfortunately, those people would collectively weigh about 10179 tons, excluding the bendy-straws. Now, the official world record for two-handed weightlifting by a man is 600 pounds, but there is someone claiming they can lift up to 7063.75 pounds. Alas, this is still less than one hundredth of one percent of the required lifting power.

In short, our psychic weight lifter would be flattened to approximately the thickness of a dorito chip in about half a second. Sorry if this upset anyone trying to get to space...

I was able to turn up "The Happy Days Ahead", a chapter from Heinlein's Expanded Universe. In this chapter, he talks about making scientific predictions in works of science fiction. Near the beginning of the chapter, he mentions what happened with the waterbed.

In Stranger in a Strange Land, Heinlein gives a fairly detailed (if somewhat simplistic--read it yourself) description of a water bed. A number of years later, someone attempted to patent the water bed, only to be denied the patent on the basis of the prior art in Heinlein's book. Heinlein does point out that the attempted patentor was not the creator of the first water bed. The creator of the first physical water bed actually sent Heinlein a free water bed when the came out and named his company the "Share-Water Bed Company".

Linux scalability?

A scalable Linux cluster machine is the 44th fastest computer in the world. NT isn't on the list, but the list only goes to 500. Clearly, since you say WinNT is more scalable, the absence of WinNT from this list must be some form of conspiracy perpetuated by those darn Linux zealots.

Just imagine the performance if you installed NT 4.0 on all them nodes.

I don't think this kid did anything. I think it's just a dorky scripted roll he's playing.

Reading his story about breaking into BMP et al reminded me of a talk show I saw a few years ago. The topic was credit card scams, or some such thing. The guests has on the silly disguises like hats, sun glasses, and fake mustaches. At the end of the show a number of police officers made an "unexpected" appearance and arrested the guests.

If this self proclaimed hacker is guilty of all his claims, I don't think he would have his own personal editors. He would have his lawyers.

I imagine BMP doesn't care about his cracking because it is actually just hype. They wanted a computer geek for the show. He knew a little bit about computers and had a look they liked. So they enhanced his resume to make him more interesting. The kid probably doesn't know the GPL from the GH-EULA
