GameCube Has Many High Quality TitlesOver at GameTab.com we compile reviews for all platforms from all over the web. Just the other day we finished our "Game Charts" script which lets you search for games based on average reviewer rating on websites, price, platform and release date.
What is interesting is analyzing all of the data concerning quality titles the individual console makers have produced. Here is the page listing the top GC games (those with greater than 85% average reviews). As you can see Nintendo has released (including third party titles) 16 titles which have been very well received by the reviewing wing of the games industry. In contrast the PC industry released 27 games with similar press fanfare, the PS2 released 28 games, and the XBox 18.
The GameCube has the smallest number of quality titles but if you factor in GameboyAdvance games the total rises to 29. And indeed if you are buying a GC soon it will come with the GameBoy TV adapter so you can play all your Nintendo games for $150 for the unit. The GameCube has always been cheaper than the other systems and that is a major selling point for it.
If you look at the top rated games you'll see 3 GameCube games in the top 10. The GameCube is producing very high quality games but it is getting hurt because third party developers are not supporting it as well (they create and optimize the game for the PS2 and then release that game for the XBox/GC hardware which is much more powerful). Also, the PS2/PC controls the highly acclaimed GTA series which has a solid hold on the Top 10 games.
I'm not saying that Nintendo is not to blame for many of the woes felt by GC owners. I'm just saying it is possibly the best console to own (it's cheap and has a number of stellar 1st party titles not available elsewhere). Nintendo and Microsoft might have lost to Sony in this battle, but Nintendo is still very aggressive in their future plans and they have a stranglehold on the portable gaming market. The next round of consoles will be very interesting and with exclusivity contracts from the likes of RockStar Games (GTA) and Square (Final Fantasy) being expired soon or renegotiated frequently it is possible that Nintendo's next console will be able to compete on the same level as the PS3 and XBOX2.
In the meantime I will be playing Animal Crossing, Metroid Prime and Wind Waker. And (unfortunately) waiting for Mario Kart, F-zero, etc. for the GameCube.
My biggest beef with Nintendo is that it took nearly 2 or more years to get many of their 1st party sequels made. There's no real excuse for any of that. They should have been launch titles or at least released in 2002.

You can do exactly that. ;) ./btdownloadheadless
I run a tracker that hosts a number of game related files (here) and have a "headless downloader" for each one. That is, you run btdownloadheadless.py on a
.torrent on your server and let it continue running. You can set the max upload speed, etc, so that it doesn't use up your entire pipe. It acts as if it's just another seed/client.
What I do is put the source file onto the server, create the .torrent, then start a downloader on that with a max upload of 100 - 200k/sec. That ensures that there is always at least one seed for each file, and it helps provide some additional upload bandwidth. I am surprised more trackers don't do this, even if they just set the max upload at 5k/sec or something it would help a lot. -
Complete server package
Hi,
One of the more useful things I see BitTorrent as is what its name implies: A temporary P2P network to alleviate a 'torrent' of downloads. I especially like the way GameTab News (http://news.gametab.com/torrents.php) handles it: They are always a seed for their torrents, and remain a contributing uploader as long as the torrent is on their site. My question is:
Do you see a BitTorrent server package, perhaps as an addon to Apache or something, that will run a tracker, make .torrent files out of files on your server, and seed them? Right now this requires several different packages, including the tracker, maketorrent, and the client (for seeding the files). Having all of this as a single package would be nice for people who want to use BitTorrent for it's many legal uses. Of course, the warez communities who use BitTorrent solely as a P2P app wouldn't benefit from this, but from what I understood it is your desire to promote only the legal uses of BitTorrent.
Yours respectfully,
Clint Olson
P.S. Thank you for making this wonderful program! -

The rise of the met-siteRotten Tomatoes"
Google News
Game Rankings
GameTabI think sites like these are the future of info dissemination. I don't have the time to check out the separate game review and movie review watering holes. I have my local paper bookmarked, and BBC News, but all other news comes from Google. So on down the list. These meta-sites save a buttload of time and research.
When I do my online shopping, I always look for customer ratings. Now, I don't have to. Instead of the opinions of fifty average joes, I have the opinions of fifty paid professionals. Now, before you come at me and say that those reviewers might be paid to say something good, I can say from experience that bought opinions aren't as prevalent as you think and least come without a slew of spelling and grammar mistakes.
It's the wave of the future, like it or not. ve3d.com is fast becoming the unofficial hub of gaming news, despite the fact that you could fit its in-house content in a thimble and their admins' lack of journalistic ability is exposed on a daily basis.
And honestly, how many of you have
/. as your primary info source? It's great, don't get me wrong, but it's another example of a meta-site...one where many people don't even take the time to RTFA. Content is not king once you realize the threshold of human consumption. You just end up bowling people over with sound and fury. I don't have a cell phone, pager, or use IM, but I'm still overloaded by email. I have my primary email, my site registration email, my new primary since the old primary's shot through with spam, my work email, a website email, an alias for that website email...Then there are stock tickers, weather reports, sports scores, online banking...I think, however, that the worst element is spam. Not just unsolicited email, but telemarketing calls, junk mail, door-to-door, etc. Then there are TV commercials, radio commercials, print media commercials. It's advertising that kills. Something like 80% of all email in the US is unsolicited. How many dinners have you completed without a sales call? How many days have you gone without another credit card in the mail? Yadda, yadda, yadda, and I wonder how many even read this far.

Re:Any screen captures?
Download BitTorrent and use the Doom 3
.torrent link. That's what it's there for (was getting 140K/sec).And as always, don't forget to keep your download window open for a few minutes after finishing.

ClarificationIf you buy an XBox and do not buy XBox games Microsoft is not getting one cent from you either. In fact they are losing money. The Xbox itself is still a loss for Microsoft and will likely be even more of a loss once they start shipping the "slim" XBoxes.

Great reviews so far...
The critics are loving it. Normally I don't care for little mini-game compilations because they tend to get boring quickly, but it sounds like this one has some interesting twists and good 'ol Nintendo polish.

my suggestion
I never post here, hence the anonymous coward tag. If you only play one game this month/year/lifetime... you'd better make it the latest Legend of Zelda game, the Wind Walker. It is being called 'the greatest game of all time', and I have to agree.

Re:Ouch.
We @ Slashdot Games are now trying to make sure there's a BitTorrent link available alongside any posts that will generate server-slaying bandwidth, with the help of nice people who mailed us and offered to help out. In this case, we actually mailed the guys at Gametab before the post went live to alert them ask them about putting a BitTorrent link on their site - thanks again to them. Looks like it helped a bit, at least.

Information...There doesn't seem to be much out there in terms of unique descriptions about Advent Rising or media presenting the game itself. It's an Unreal game but what I'd really be interested in would be seeing some of the Doom3 engine games.
If you're interested in other articles about Advent Rising there is a collection here.

Re:GameRankings
I actually prefer GameTab for a compiled list of game reviews. They have an excellent design which isn't as harsh on the eyes as gamerankings and
/.games.
I also enjoy all the quotes they have next to reviews. IMO it is a much nicer site overall than the others. -
Interesting...
There is definitely room for improvement in the world of gaming news. It takes far too much time to find quality news for titles you are interested in.
As far as gaming news sites go, I just go to GameTab news as they have feeds updated every 10 minutes from the top news sites. -
Broader Platforms
I'm excited about the expansion of the series onto multiple platforms. I never bought a PS2 because when I was looking into next-gen systems it just seemed too "old" compared with the Xbox and Cube. So I ended up with a GameCube. But unfortunately the PS2 has the largest library of games, too.
I first heard the news about multiple platforms at GameTab News. Here are all the related GTA stories. -

Some reviews aren't so badSites like Gamespot have the user rankings and reviews to go along with the editorial reviews (which, compared to drivel sites like IGN are fantastic). I find it great to go through and read not only the glowing player reviews but also the downright slamming ones. On more than one occasion I've played a game where the minority of players said it sucked -- and found my thoughts right in line with theirs after trying it out. I'm not saying this is the way to go for all games, but it's good to read the negatives.
For editorial reviews, I head straight to Game Rankings or GameTab. They're great at showing all the editorials out there and averaging the scores. I usually find the averages are a more faithful indicator than the 100% fanboy review at the top of the pile.
Just my 2c.

State of the Game Reviewer IndustrySome games are hailed by the vast majority of critics as being exceedingly good or exceedingly terrible. Other games, such as MoO3 are regarded quite differently among different reviewers (even the more professional sites).
It is good that sites such as Team Xbox aren't afraid to give a mediocre game a mediocre score. But notice how harsh GameSpot can be on the same game.
Although there are a lot of "cookie cutter" game review sites out there that don't post quality articles there is nonetheless a growing number of quality sites whose opinions you should expect.
The big three (GameSpot, IGN, and GameSpy) generally have the most clout among gamers. How long will that last?

Revisiting Old GamesFor the most part genres aren't dying out. The best parts of old games are being implemented into new games from new genres. The game design of most modern games boils down to game designs from years ago. As mentioned previously, Pikmin is essentially a simplistic puzzle game mixed with a few strategy elements.
Games continue to change form and adopt newer forms of graphics. But the best games have a solid foundation and rely on the graphics to tell the story and not to sell the game. Take a look at the list of top games at GameTab. Two Zelda's are in the Top 10 (at least right now). The new gameboy version is hanging onto a top spot while the seemingly controversial Wind Waker has snagged the supreme ranking. Wind Waker is in essence a new tale about Link built upon the foundations of the very first Zelda game for the NES. Nothing has really changed at the fundemental levels.
Notice the lack of PC games on the top 10. A few titles might be missing from the database but it might generally be assumed that a wider variety of titles exists for the consoles that are able to be appreciated by the broader audience. All of the games in the Top 10 are refinements upon a simple formula and many of them are sequels in name if not in spirit of old games.
The videogame industry has not quite run out of ideas like holiday has. It's a pretty darn good idea to be a gamer. If you're burnt out, buy a GameCube which is considered to be for the kiddies. And go make Kimiko happy!

Neverwinter Nights
Last year's release, Neverwinter Nights by BioWare, is the game to get if you want some good D&D action. In fact, the multiplayer mode is just like playing tabletop D&D but via your computer and the Internet. Multiplayer supports a Dungeon Master who can modify the world in real time. He can take complete control of monsters/characters, place monsters into the world on the fly, further the story depending on the actions of the players, etc. There are also tons of mods out there now.

Dragon's Lair is something that should have stayed in the arcade or your MAME cabinet forever and not have been rehased for the PC.

RAID and FirewireIs there any way the peripheral to peripheral features of firewire could be used to create an advanced disk redundancy solution ala RAID? I ask this because I know the new Firewire specs shipping on the fancy new Apple machines are getting quite speedy and one of the prime advantages of 1394 over USB is the device to device communication that is possible.
Is it possible to use Firewire and a service like Rendevous to make an intelligent redundant system? It's a thought at least. My firewire drive I use for my Inspiron works nicely enough. Would firewire be cheaper than RAID for servers, however?
