Works like a charmThere are many
/.ers that are wondering what the big deal is. The big deal is that this is one of those simple applications you don't realize you need until you need it. Then you realize that you really need it.
After I recently finished my Ph.D., I put together over 70 job market packets. For both appearances and efficiency, I needed to generate labels by the dozen.
Much to my surprise, there was an ebuild of gLabels for Gentoo. Even more to my surprise, even though it's in beta, it worked flawlessly. The interface was so well done that I never even needed to look for help files.
Kudos to the gLabels team! -

Re:Well duh/
Why not help me audit Debian then? (And give me a job
;)There are other groups focussed upon auditing work, and security changes but most people seem to regard convienence and ease of use as more attractive. (Maybe Microsoft got it right
;)I think it's nice to see a popular distribution like Fedora moving towards using the SELinux kernel, and I hope this helps others move in a similar direction.
I've also heard of the Hardened Gentoo distribution, and the Adamantix distribution (based on Debian). I think these two projects help show that people are slowly moving in the "right" direction.
-
Re:So?
Exactly. The issue was brought up on gentoo-dev, but the response was more or less "Gentoo users have to be able to watch their
.WMV p0rn clips, legality be damned".
Gentoo's social contract isn't worth the toilet paper it's written on. -
Re:Going the way of the dinosaurs
Open source can change some of those things, but as far as hardware goes you still need someone willing to put up considerable amounts of money for manufacturing.
Let me provide some suggestions. I work with F/OSS development for network security and wireless applications, and have spent a few years working with low-cost embedded systems that support Linux. With a Linux kernel and OS in a small box, there's not much you can't do per amateur/wireless development.
My current favorite foundation is:
o RouterBoard from Mikrotik of Latvia. Pentium 233/266 performance, very low cost ($300ish), dual PCMCIA slots, dual Ethernet (in one of the two models), microPCI slot (wonderful!), and compactflash slot. Hardware watchdog and other goodies built in are things normally found on much more expensive embedded system boards.
o IBM/Hitachi Microdrive: My base development systems runs with a 1 GB Microdrive with Debian on it, though I've got a 4 GB setup with Gentoo and use the 370 MB version for production loads. Routerboard has a Debian developers kit available for download on the site, including watchdog control. Avoid compactflash/CF (Microdrive fits the CF profile but is an actual spinning device) unless you're certain you're going to have minimal writes over time, as they will eventually cease to write and become somewhat worthless (in my experience, low-write use lasts about one year).
o Debian or Gentoo for development environment: there are some embedded distributions out there but they're intended for when you're ready to reduce to your final low-profile image. Both these distros give you a good amount of control over what is going into your system. Embedded Gentoo will be nice eventually (with cross-compile support) but isn't there yet.
o Python: Not to start any language wars (or distro wars per above), but Python is a great place for amateur developers to work in. Frameworks like Twisted allow you to focus on your code and build upon the networking smarts of others. I haven't tried yet, but I keep eyeballing Shtoom for an amateur project as well.

Re:Evo2 for Win32?
It is a bit of a sledgehammer to crack and acorn route but Evolution works perfectly under colinux.
I use colinux to run gentoo (other distros are available), and cygwin to add XWindow support. You also need to follow the instructions to get networking working and then you can just
:emerge evolution
Admittedly this is a lot of setup work but once it is working it is not obvious that evolution isn't a native port. The other benefit is you can use the same setup to run any Linux programs under Windows (though image editing or 3D programs would be very slow)

Re:Too bad
As for CVS... I don't get to second-guess them on that either.
You don't need to, just read the email halfway down this bug report. Oh, and this page also contains what should be a working ebuild for anybody who actually cares to use winex CVS.
Basically, transgaming wanted free tech support from real developers, while making normal users pay for the software. They threatened to make the CVS accessible only to subscribers if there was "abuse". Personally, I think gentoo should have pushed them so that they'd have to cut their own throats by cutting off potential developers. You're either open-source or closed-source - you can't say you want free open-source labor while charging mandatory license fees and also putting restrictions on distribution. It just doesn't work.
All this of course happened because the Wine team made the mistake of not using the GPL. This is a mistake they have since corrected... -
Re:Support CodeweaversThe only thing you can't do is redistribute WineX code for any commercial purpose.
While the license says that, consider what happened when Debian wanted to package it and include it in non-free. Transgaming asked Debian not to, with a threat to change the license to stop Debian distributing any future versions. Quoteth Gavriel State, Transgaming's CEO:If Debian goes ahead and packages WineX despite our request, we will have to evaluate how that is affecting our financial situation, and determine whether we should change our license to restrict any future binary-packaged redistribution, regardless of commercial or non-commercial intent. It would certainly be our preference not to have to do so.
http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2002/05/msg02 463.html
Gentoo removed WineX for similar reasons. -

Re:It's True About Desktop Management Tools
The typical larger IT department has to deal with things like corporate software policies, locking user account profiles, automated application and operating system patches/updates and remote helpdesk. How can I enforce the corporate software policy against instant messengers when every distro except debian bundles all the stock KDE applications (including instant messenger apps) in a few giant RPMs? KDE 3.2 will be doing more profile locking features, but what about applications that don't use the KDE libs? What about Gnome?
- Dont give your users root on their desktop machines, and they can't install packages. Additionally you can make gcc non-executable to non-root users.
- Use a central authentication source, such as LDAP.
- Use a better distro
- Use ssh for remote administration, or if you need a GUI, a remote X client.
A specific suggestion: Gentoo. If you really think you might need to rebuild your apps to add your own patches and such, Gentoo arguably has the best build system, and you can configure your clients to only install binary packages from a central server. Then your client machines don't have to actually build anything.
The downside on Gentoo is that it does not have an automated installer, which can be a real pain if you have a lot of machines to install. The solution is fairly simple: Build one client, and then use Mondo to build a self-installing CD (it's a one-liner). Burn the resulting ISO(s) (depending on how much you install), put them in a new machine, boot, let it self-install, reboot, and you're done. You don't have to use Gentoo for this, of course.
Supporting desktop clients is not going to be a no-brainer with any OS, but it is doable with Linux and existing tools.

Re:Suse versus Mandrake?
I've just been spoiled by FreeBSD's ports system
Then you would probably love Gentoo. I don't personally use it anymore, however they have an improved ports like system that is very nice, thousands of apps to install with just a simple command (and then wait on the compile). -

The OS chain of reasoning: Two questionsWhen any of my friends starts talking about which operating system to use, I go through this chain of reasoning (well, two questions) with them:
1. Is there an application that you just have to have that runs on one operating system?
If yes, you have no choice. Change your life or live with it.
2. Do you want to just use the computer or want to fool around with the internals?
If you just want to use it as a tool, go out and buy something from Apple. Yes, they are more expensive at first, but they last longer (unless you have a dual USB iBook, of course), are trivial to use, don't get viruses, look great, and you can always run Linux on them if you change your mind. The only drawback is the lack of a good, free office package: OpenOffice.org for OS X just isn't there yet, and it looks like we're going to have to wait at least a year. Apple should have addressed this problem earlier.
If you want to play around with the computer for its own sake, you want Linux. If you are buying a computer from scratch, still buy an Apple, because the hardware is great. Then, install either Gentoo or Yellow Dog. If you have a computer sitting around, just install Gentoo. You will learn all kinds of stuff, and the system will work like greased lightning.
Notice there is only one case where you might get Windows: If there is an application that you really, really need and that only runs with Windows. The chance of that is getting pretty small for normal people -- I have had lots of fun point out that OpenOffice.org can export directly to PDF whereas MS Office can't. And Firefox and Thunderbird are better already than anything that Microsoft or Apple can offer. In about a year...

I don't want to see one comment from .....
gentoo users. Every time there is announcement of a new application all the chumps from the gentoo camp talk about how all they have to do is `emerge ebuildname` and it just works. Being that this is a rather popular application, there still is not a stable ebuild for thunderbird 0.6. I guess not only do I have to wait forever to build the application, I will have to wait for the ebuild to be available.
**to be honest, every stable ebuild I have installed it has worked perfectly.

Re:-mm patches?According to Gentoo's Kernel Guide:
The mm-sources are based on the development-sources and contain Andrew Morton's patch set. It assembles several other patches, like ext2/3 Extended Attributes and Access Control Lists, Page Table Sharing, the Orlov Allocator, non-linear mapping behaviour, etc into one patch set.
But that might be out-of-date, because the announcement for the patches to 2.6.6 looks like it says competely different things. If you really want to live on the edge and you think development-sources are for wussies, then try out mm-sources.
As for interpretation of all this (e.g. do I want these patches?), beats the fuck out of me.

Re:Obligatory luser question
Ok, I'll bite
It won't take a lot of time, not with your system specs. We're talking about 30min tops. Depends a lot on what kind of modules etc you need to make.
If you've never done it, though, you may want to a) ask someone who knows this stuff for help or/and b) read a few docs on the subject. If you don't know what you're doing, you most probably will end up with something missing, stuff like soundcard support or something. A good place to start (in my biased opinion ofcourse) would be here for instance Some googling never hurts, either. -
Just emerged it!While not on portage (yet), Gentoo users can find an ebuild over here.
It killed off my bookmarks, so you have been warned.

For true 64 bitness, launch every Linux!
Apple has not yet released a true 64-bit version of OS X, while Gentoo released a PPC64 version a few weeks ago. If you're going to buy 64 bits of CPU, you might as well get 64 bits of OS too.

Re:RAID vs. single drive performance
Looking at Froogle, I'm seeing 74GB Raptors for ~ $230. Putting $230 towards a Maxtor SATA drive gets you around 250GB of storage. That's not insignificant. That's HUGE.
Performance is great, but folks buying Raptors are the power-users that can fill those drives in a hurry. UT2004 doesn't come on two floppies. It's MASSIVE.
The Gentoo forums have some hdparm scores, and my dual SATA 160GB drives in RAID-0 routinely outperform scores from single, fast drives. -

Re:FreeBSD is Undead
Isn't it actually funny that the ports system is a pure userland framework that has nothing inherently FreeBSD-ish? It could just as well be adopted by Linux distros, but right now, only gentoo did it.
One of the best features of FreeBSD is in my experience the ease with which you can update the whole system with a simple cvsup and recompile. No need to go hunting for N utilities and libraries all over the Net, just to get the sources to a base system. It's in the CVS repo, ready to be grabbed.
The CVS repository is also a great resource if you are interested in the development history of the system. Not only the kernel, but the whole system. If Linux (as an OS, not only a kernel) had a unified CVS just like the BSDs right from the start, it would have been much easier to debunk TSG/SCO's myths and FUD.

Re:FreeBSD is an OS, Linux isn't....Nvidia has FreeBSD drivers available. However for ATI drivers, there still remains a need for people to visit the Linux Driver feedback page and ask for FreeBSD support.
As both a FreeBSD user and Gentoo user, I think the best description would be that Gentoo is BSD for Linux users. As a humourous aside, some friends have also started describing Gentoo as "ricenix: 2Fast2Optimized".
;-)Gentoo is laid out fairly logically (no idea if it follows the Linux Standards Base though). The main benefit is the total control you gain over your installation - much like you gain with BSD (hence, BSD for Linux users). Though it is achieved through the remarkable Portage package management system, vs FreeBSD which is a wholly maintained o/s, with a very large "ports" system.
The only thing that keeps me from using FreeBSD on my workstation is that I do play some games on Linux, and write software to support game playing on a local Australian gaming network. For those that don't need the fluff that's supported on Linux (games being a primary example), almost everything else is available under FreeBSD. But to save you extra work, Gentoo is probably the way to go (easy to manage once installed through portage).

Me also
I also use the gentoo with the xfce4. I can't wait for the xfce 4.2, it is teh hotness. If you haven't tried xfce4 I suggest you at least take it for a spin. Imagine a lightweight GTK based window manager that has everything you need and nothing you don't. Anything it doesn't supply, you must provide by using other linux programs (xbindkeys, devilspie, etc.). It is also super fredesktop.org standards compliant. It's really great because all of your programs interoperate in the standard linux way as opposed to all of them needing to be built with kde/gnome support.
Rather than risk repeating what everyone else said I must say this. The distros that most people use like RedHat, Mandrake and Suse are like big american SUV cars. They have everything, which is also more than anyone needs. Gentoo however is for ricers which is what I am. I get a small, efficient foreign car and I customize to fit me like a glove. No extras, nothing missing. If you don't believe it then this monthly thread will convince you. -

Re:Well duh
The problem comes when you need to load any app that's based on KDE. Then all the bloated beast is loaded into RAM. Not only then there goes your machine's RAM, you also get to wait several extra seconds for all that KDE bloat to load. Not "features", but hundreds of megabytes of pure library bloat, which you can't turn off. Whoppee.
You obviously didn't check for yourself by typing
ldd `which konqueror`
before writing this rant. Konqueror, in KDE 3.2.2, for example, uses some 10M worth of KDE libraries. That's quite a bit, but hardly "hundreds of megabytes of pure library bloat". Most other libs Konqueror uses are from X11, btw.It is true, that KDE apps take their time to start, but the size of the libraries is not the crucial point, rather the fact that KDE is written in C++, and linking C++ programs requires a substantial amount of CPU work. The solution is to use prelinking which means the system doesn't have to dynamically link all those libraries every time a KDE app is started, but only once in a while in the background. If it was recently opened (i.e. in cache), KMail requires less than half a second to open up, display the main window, and allow interaction on my prelinked Gentoo Linux system.

Re:Compared to Windows
Um, so you're going to compare the stability of windows with the least stable portion of the whole linux xommunity, if you want true stability run Debian or slackware. FC in My experience is the most unstable OS I've seen since win95a. As for Mandrake 10: it just was released, they're obviously using the M$ model of release, then patch.
Want stability, speed, less bloat try gentoo -
gentoo on my 64 MB laptop OKi already used slackware, suse, redhat.. not really satisfied with these linux distributions i knew and unwanting to go the redhat route ($$$), i evaluated some "independent" distributions for use on our servers.
i failed to like debian (sorry), but falled litteraly in love w/ gentoo:
portage/emerge is very likable, and i agree with their philosophy and the way they express it. massive number of packages, transparency. the concept of meta-distribution is no joke, i use it as well for my home PC needs, on my workstation, my 64 MB old laptop and on my servers.after a while using linux, i was loosing the flame. with all this stuff installed by default by most distribution linux was looking more and more blackboxed like windows, with its start-from-almost-nothing approache, the administrator is winning back the mastering of his system.
gentoo is a salutary return to the roots and the spirit of unix.
it brings the same freshness feeling than migrating from (bloated) gnome desktop to xfce.
P.S.: i use devil-linux too, perfect for network stuff on diskless recycled PCs.. very nice stuff too !

Re:I'm cheap...But one has either to have a huge internet connection to download ISOs or buy new Red Hat/Suse/Whatever boxes everytime...(in the end, one will have spent more on updating Linux than on Windows).
How I update linux- Open a terminal
- Enter emerge -u world
- Minimise the terminal and continue surfing slashdot
- Close the terminal when its done
:D )
The download is small and the amount of user input required even smaller. You don't need the broadest of broadband to do this.
I run gentoo. -

Re:Since I'm not exactly an attorney...
could someone explain why Gentoo made this move at this time?

Profit in support not selling bits ...IMO I think the traditional "for profit" software business model just doesn't work for GNU/Linux distros. What I'd like to see is Gentoo move into the "pay for phone support" business. Got a question you need answered now? Pay us $75USD and we'll help. Questions and answers can be read on a website so everyone benefits. There's profit in it while bring cash in to support an excellent distro. It's possible that $75 could be written off as a donation (kinda like "underwriting" on public radio/tv).
I'm personally thankful that the "powers that be" at Gentoo have the "Gentoo GNU/Linux Social Contract". If you're running another distro you really need to check Gentoo out. Gentoo's future is quite bright.

Re:How about FOR profit?Gosh, I had mod points but I'm giving them up so I can reply....
Basically, being a NFP will relieve much of the money-making pressure on Gentoo, so they can fulfill their Social Contract, without having to compromise it so they can mmet some aribitrary profit targets imposed by shareholders and so.
NFP also is a testimony to their commitment on giving back to the community instead of giving to some high-profile exec or a limited bunch of anonymous shareholders.
In principle, it's a good thing, but let's see how they can get a cash flow going (not necessarily profit, but they should have at least the means to keep paying their bills on time).

yay for gentoo
I personally love Gentoo, hopefully now that they won't have to pay taxes and get other benefits they will be able to give the Gentoo users a little bit more, although they've been doing a great job so far. And for people who don't know what Gentoo is, since it's pretty popular but not everyone knows about it. It is a Linux OS that compiles most packages (except for open office, unless you're crazy, like me). Take a look at it here.

SUSE cannot match what BSD offers...
Is it any wonder people think Linux users are a bunch of flaming homosexuals when its fronted by obviously gay losers like these?! BSD has a mascot who leaves us in no doubt that this is the OS for real men! If Linux had more hot chicks and gorgeous babes then maybe it would be able to compete with BSD! Hell this girl should be a model!
Linux is a joke as long as it continues to lack sexy girls like her! I mean just look at this girl! Doesn't she excite you? I know this little hottie puts me in need of a cold shower! This guy looks like he is about to cream his pants standing next to such a fox. As you can see, no man can resist this sexy little minx. Don't you wish the guy in this pic was you? Are you telling me you wouldn't like to get your hands on this ass?! Wouldn't this just make your Christmas?! Yes doctor, this uber babe definitely gets my pulse racing! Oh how I envy the lucky girl in this shot! Linux has nothing that can possibly compete. Come on, you must admit she is better than an overweight penguin or a gay looking goat! Wouldn't this be more liklely to influence your choice of OS?
With sexy chicks like the lovely Ceren you could have people queuing up to buy open source products. Could you really refuse to buy a copy of BSD if she told you to? Personally I know I would give my right arm to get this close to such a divine beauty!
Don't be a fag! Join the campaign for more cute open source babes today!

Gentoo
Why don't you install Gentoo instead?

No backdoors with BSD!

Re:Wow. Out of touch..With Gentoo, you can view the portage tree under
/usr/portageHere is a sample of how it looks: Check under code listing 2
it's cool to see what packages there are. You can also do emerge search nameofpackage
Of course, if you have no idea what you want to install, then it is no better or worse than any other install method.
-
Re:probably
The problem is, 9.2.2 is the most recent version by portage's knowledge, and it keeps trying to downgrade it (which means I can't just blindly "emerge world", or portage will downgrade bind).
If you don't mind going for the ~x86 packages for bind, you could useecho net-dns/bind ~x86 >>
This link is your friend /etc/portage/package.keywords -
Re:probably
If there are any Gentoo folks reading, please get Bind 9.2.3 into portage properly. I got it installed on my machine by hand just fine, but emerge keeps trying to downgrade it to 9.2.2. That makes me unhappy.
You could write an ebuild and submit it to Bugzilla. You probably don't even have to write it from scratch...take the 9.2.2 ebuild, tweak it a bit if necessary, file it under
/usr/local/portage, and try it out.(I would do this, but I don't use BIND...I use djbdns. I put in ebuilds for MythTV 0.15 and a couple of smaller packages using the aforementioned method, though. A fair bit of the time, you can get by with just copying the ebuild without any changes (the program version frequently isn't hardcoded anywhere in the ebuild).)
