Re:Crummy Specs Even For Then
Not sure about the power-hungriness.
The TDP of AMD K6-2 were all in the 10-20 watt range.
It was only the Athlon and the Pentium 4 where the TDPs went through the roof, past 50 watts.

Re:Humour and irony
Is it something lacking in Asia
Can't speak for all of Asia, but having spent a decade in Japan, toilet humour is basically as good as it gets on TV. Even rakugo, a traditional form of Japanese humour that is practically a fine art
compared to what usually passes for comedy in Japan, is utterly dry tripe.Note that while wikipedia states 'the rakugo artist depicts a long and complicated comical story', well, I'll let you be the judge.
Here is a passable rendition of Meguro no sanma,
one of the most famous and best-loved rakugo. Hilarious stuff, isn't it.(random aside: geocities.co.jp lives??! talk about insular! guess we didn't give the memo a visitor's visa.)

The only reason you got modded up was because most slashdotters don't know about Nihon-so they rely on someone propgating ignorance instead. Slashdot mod points do not necessaily reflect reality, which you failed today.

Good show, worth watching, but 2-ch (the forum that the show is based on) isn't like slashdot. 2-ch is like yahoo groups... it's non-technical and is 40% ASCII (erm EUC_JP) art, 50% slang, and 10% "insight". But anyway, here's the original 2-ch thread that inspired Densha Otoko:

Re:Er, no
Erm, no. I am writing this on my AMD64-laptop right now. It does have a Mobile Athlon64 processor, but not a Turion.
I get about 1:45h w/ all kinds of power savings enabled, no wifi, and LCD at medium brightness. And that was out of the box.
What size battery? What's your battery wear level? Use MobileMeter's Battery Info tab to find that. I've run into lots of people on r3000forums.com and the HP forum on notebookreview.com who've had battery runtime issues that were traced to their Li-ion batteries wearing out prematurely. Unfortunately, MobileMeter doesn't read the current-generation HP notebooks correctly. Hopefully it'll read your notebook (probably an eMachines or Gateway with an 8 cell battery?). -

Use CrystalCPUID to manage speed and voltage
Use CrystalCPUID to manage your AMD64 CPU's speed and voltage rather than the default Cool 'n Quiet power management (set your Power Scheme to "Always On" to disable that, definitely leave the CnQ driver installed). On most HP AMD64 notebooks we've found that you can usually safely set the core voltage at about 0.2V below stock at full speed. Judging by the AMD Thermal Design Guide, that's enough to cut power consumption nearly in half. I swapped in a Mobile-class Athlon 64 3200+ into my Pavillion zv5000z in place of the stock DTR-class chip and have been running 1GHz at 0.8V, 1.6GHz at 1.025V, and 2GHz at 1.225V for months. That puts the full speed power consumption at slightly above AMD Turion ML levels. For the stock DTR chips, 1.3V at full speed is popular.
Of course, in average use, the standard AMD Cool 'n Quiet behavior of running 800MHz at 0.95V while idle will give you battery life that's almost as good as an undervolted setup. 3-4 hours of battery life with a 12 cell battery is common, versus a fraction of that for the poor bastards who bought the P4-based zv5000 series (HP wisely dropped Intel CPUs from their zv6000 line). Undervolting does wonders under heavy CPU load though.
MobileMeter is my favorite way to monitor CPU speed and temperature, and Hot CPU Tester Pro verifies that I didn't go too far. -
Re:IBM Model M
I share your enthusiasm for the Model M, however, there is one, and only one, thing about it that drives me nuts.
Size.
That keyboard is freakin' huge. Useful if you need a weapon and bulletproof shield to beat back a gang of muggers, sure, but not so good if you want a lot of desk space.
That's why my favorite is the silm-design version of the IBM Model M2. Same internal engineering, same key action, and same longevity (the one I'm typing this on came with my first computer, an IBM PS/2 circa 1993). Here are some images of it. I've only ever seen one other, at a salvation army store, for $5. That one is sitting in a closet waiting for this one to fail. I think by the time it finally fails, computers won't have PS/2 interface connectors anymore. I will use a soldering iron and rebuilt the keyboard controller by hand before I give up this keyboard for any newer models. Also, to hell with Windows keys. They interfere with my gaming.
There are companies on the web that will sell you a remanufactured version of this keyboard (or any IBM series, for that matter), but so far I've yet to have one fail and need replacement. For the record, it's been through the dishwasher for a thorough cleaning seven times (little more than once a year). It has also survived dozens of meals (and spills) at the keyboard. I lost an entire can of Mt. Dew in it once, which sat overnight (damn cats). That'll kill any keyboard but these Model M types... one quick trip through the dishwasher and it's good as new. -
Re:Dual Booting Linux & Windows in 64bit
Yeah, I know what it was meant to be... but using an ASCII representation of a company's logo in a piece of writing, rather than the company's name (Digital Equipment Corporation), or a commonly-used abbreviation (Digital or DEC), is silly. Not that there's anything wrong with being silly... but then when it's done wrong, that silliness turns into stupidity. The old DEC logo is lowercase. If IcarusMoth really had an Alpha, perhaps he could've looked at the logo on the case and gotten it right.

Japan
Korea is not the country with the mecha-craze. It is Japan. The building of a giant robot is not new. Many years ago, this giant robot was already being developed in Japan. Although there is no actual functionality with this Gundam, but I doubt that NMX04-1A can be made to be autonomous any time soon.

Re:MNG as a format
I've always wanted a decent PC lossless animation format that's quick, highly compressible and convenient. APNG looks like it could fulfil this criteria.
But for those that can't wait, one of the best I've found so far is to save in a lossless AVI format; the codec is LCL (lossless codec library), created by Kenji Oshima. It compresses cartoon-style animations very well.
However, there is one format that even beats this, but it means RARring or ZIPping the file at the end. In fact, you've probably already got it - the "Microsoft Video 1" codec. Simply configure the "Video Quality" to 100%, and you have a fair-sized file normally, but when zipped/rarred, it's the smallest I've ever seen. Plus, you can use the animation through the Explorer browser, and can make it run at 60 frames per second or more if you so wish. -
Re:Sure
While we are at it lets look at what sold in 2000 and 2003.
I don't listen to the radio or pop music in general, but let me guess which of the 7 top 10 albums from 2000 broke 5mil units. 1) Nsync "No strings attached" 2) Santana "Supernatural" (also one of the best selling albums of all time) 3) m&m "The Marshall Mathers LP" 4) BS "Oops I did it again" 5) Creed "Human Clay" 6) Celine Dion "All The Way...A Decade Of Song" 7) Christina Aguilera "Christina Aguilera"
Summary: 2 boy bands (they sell, what other music will 11 year old girls buy?) 1 famous musician that has been around over 30 years and had one of the best selling albums of all time (santana) 2 bimbo chicks (that sell to 11 year old girls and boys up to 14) and Celine Dion just sells, noone knows who buys it, but somebody does.
OK, 2003 which 2 sold 5mil units? I guess 50 Cent's "Get rich or die tryin'" and I dunno its a tossup for the otherone, it doesn't really matter.
Anyway, I can see why the sales have dropped by almost 1/2. No boy bands, no blond bimbos, and the rest is pretty much marginal popy stuff.
Its worth noting that concert sales are way down this year. Lollipoluza (sp?) had to cancel because of a lack of interest. I guess all the kids think that sitting in front of their computer listening to MP3s on small computer speakers is comparable to a concert.... Or maybe there isn't stuff to see? -

Re: Dreamcast instead?
A cheap network adapter would be nice. Although I have not tried it myself, there is a modem to modem method of establishing a PPP connection to your local network with the DC. Not ethernet but it should be a reliable connection.
For Divx I've only used dcmplay. I do not know the relationship if any between it and Pocket Divx but this one suffers from sync problems also.
Even with the obvious negatives of the DC, it was a very capable console and there is still a decent amount of development floating around for it. -
Re:Works in the lab, never in reality.
And what about those open source and non-American filesharing programs? Are these folks going to be ecstatic to add this wonderful DRM type technology to their programs? I really doubt it...

The Japanese peer to peer application Winny seems to be some sort of software based on Freenet, or so I've heard. It works remarkably well. You'd basically park it overnight and tell it what to look for.

Re:How safe are those not in US
Actually, most Japanese who are knowledgeble about p2p use winny which is based on freenet and is totally anonymous(and searchable). Although it doesn't have a chat feature, it does feature a unique bulletin board system.

Winny
The most popular P2P application in Japan is called Winny and is built around Freenet. There's some english information about it here, as well as a translated client. The last time I tried, though, the translated client was an older version and I couldn't get it to connect, but the latest Japanese binary worked for me.

Re:First "Click Me!" translation (+5 Informative)
There is also a translation of the first "Click me" in a flash file which I found here. Only the singing is translated, not all the Japanese text. The translation seems like it was done literally so it is a litte hard to follow.
There is also alot of other japanese flash files that appear to be done by the same person. I found a page of those here. Not all of them are ascii. but there are alot more that just the chinko one... This is one of my favorites cause they use The Offspring, and they have some cool effects like a guy who is running up an endless set of stairs. -
The many faces of asciiObviously, there's more than one ASCII art scene. In some of them, the artists even are organized into groups, cooperating and releasing regular "packs" under the same label. Some people might not agree on these categories (and there are some overlapping), but I'll try to list them:
The Amiga ascii scene (Now often refered to as the "oldschool scene"):
From the early 90's people made "collections" - large textfiles - with logos (file_id.diz, bbs adverts, demo group names, etc), and later rants, poems and other forms of self expression. Tools of the trade: Slash, backslash, underscore, pipe, you get the idea.
Freshpla.net has a pretty good (though not updated) archive. Yes, I know, this might be look like madness to, hm, laymen :) If you really want to have a closer look, though, check out the works of e.g. Mark Ryder, Grimlock, and... no, too many to mention. All collections should be viewed with CygnusEd in Topaz 8, even though your browser could do the trick. The blockstyle scene
These are the nice people that make most of those NFO files. Uses the blocks in the MS-DOS charset. Two of the biggest groups are Superior Art Creations (SAC) and Chemical Reaction (CRO). Get the Damn NFO Viewer (Win32).The newschool scene
Seems to be the part of the group-based ascii scene that stays furthest away from the warez scene. Uses e.g. $$$$$$ to fill shapes, and various other characters to make their outline smooth. Only active examples I can remember at the moment are Mimic and Remorse. Ansi happens :)The Ansi scene
Ascii is ascii and ansi is ansi, but these scenes are closely connected. Colourized art using the MS-DOS font. There can only be one: ACID. Viewers available for most platforms, just use Google....and then, of course, there are those other forms of ascii art, as the hilarious The Adventures of the Boy with Immovable Hair and this wonderful flash anim synced to an Offspring song (Might be from the same author as that flash link in the parent post).

Evolution on Windows...In the short term, when using Windows, the most stable and simplest thing you can do is use a VNC viewer pointed at a *nix box that has Evolution on it. Otherwise, take a look at these efforts to get Gnome and other programs ported using Cygwin;
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/steven.obrien2/index
. htmlhttp://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=gnome&m=101015707
5 21446&w=2http://www.geocities.co.jp/SiliconValley/1596/en/
c ygwin.html
Unfortunately, I don't see any new efforts at a port of Evolution to Windows, but as it improves folks will start to demand it everywhere they are.
Mac OSX users are much more lucky -- they can get Evolution right now. Fink lists it as a ported app.
It would be nice to have a Windows CD with all X apps so that folks can see that *nix systems aren't usually text-based or some ugly form of CDE. Till then, I've found the boot CD and full Debian distributionKnoppix to be an ideal introduction. Blew the socks off of a admin I showed it to who didn't know it was possible, and impressed others who like the idea of Linux but can't be bothered with actually learning anything (kids, job, wife, do the math).

Ho, hum... Kikuzo probably still kicks his butt
This sounds to me like too little, too late.
Robots like this one (and much more sophisticated) have been sold in Japan since at least 1985. I bought a semi-autonomous robot back in 1987 dubbed Kikuzo that recognized 8 spoken phrases, was configurable to recognize its owners voice, played games, and was able to pick-up and release small objects. Very cool. The robot cost me about $100.00 at the Beverly Centre in Beverly Hills, at a store that specialized in Japanese gadgets.
Kikuzo is fully programmable and it acts/reacts to voice commands. Its cordless "microphone" used a 9 V battery, and the 25 cm. tall robot itself runs on four 1.5 V C batteries. It features:
- Move forward
- Move back
- Pick up
- Put down
- Rotate left
- Rotate right
- "Smile" (flash all lights in a friendly way)
Check out this guy's page for infos: http://www.geocities.co.jp/HeartLand-Gaien/6415/k
i kuzo.html -- the page is in Japanese, but it has lots of pretty pictures. While this is sort of cool, I would expect this R2-D2 to be a quantum leap over my trusty Kikuzo. We even "dissected" Kikuzo for one of my computer engineering classes (logical design) in the university (and later put him back together). We defined a cordless interface so you could program and command him from a PC (MS-DOS -- this was back in late 1988).
Granted, R2-D2 has a richer vocabulary than Kikuzo, but both respond to voice commands and play games, etc. I don't see myself spending money on such a limited R2-D2 since my Kikuzo would probably kick its arse. Offer me something as sophisticated as Aibo and then we'll talk. Meanwhile, Kikuzo even has collector's value.
Cheers!

GIF royalties went to Unisys
"Look at all the money the
.gif royalties made Compuserve..."In fact, the royalties went to Unisys.
GIF uses an adaptation of LZW (Lempel Ziv Welch) algorithm for image compression. Unfortunately, this famous algorithm is patented by Unisys Corporation.
In January of 1993, Unisys Corp. became aware that GIF uses the LZW algorithm and began negotiations with CompuServe Inc. to create a licensing agreement. They reached agreement on licensing in June 1994, and CompuServe Inc. announced it at the end of December 1994. Since then Unisys require developers of GIF-based software to secure a licensing agreement with Unisys Corp.

If you're going to the trouble to make a custom laptop, you should ruggedize it. It would be easier to modify a ruggedized briefcase than to get someone to fabricate a custom plastic case. And, it would look a whole lot cooler.
See the Halli Mac. This laptop modification was here on Slashdot back in August.

Yes you can build & run GNOME under Windows.
Yes, you could build and run Evolution under Windows, but currently ONLY under Cygwin + an X11 server (this is still local on the Windows box). A Cygwin setup can be accomplished by a newbie. See links below for running GNOME under Cygwin on a Windows box.
Much of GNOME will not build natively, although the libraries themselves are designed to be portable, and GTK is working just fine as Win32 (see GIMP).
There are two kinds of Windows ports... X11 display based, and true "native" Win32. The former is easy to do; the latter is not yet possible (tho you can help!). It's likely that a "native GNOME for Windows" will be much easier, once GTK 2.0 is released.
Links regarding running GNOME or compiling under a local X11 display:

http://xfree86.cygwin.com/screenshots/
http://www.geocities.co.jp/SiliconValley/1596/en/c ygwin.html
From the GNOME FAQ, regarding native GNOME for M$ Windows:
http://canvas.gnome.org:65348/gnomefaq/html/x359.h tml
A lot of people want to port GNOME and GTK apps over to Windows. To conquer the enemy they say, you have to enter their territory, then sway them to your culture (OS).

Where's the room for the cords?Where can I put my power cord, mouse or even the AirPort device (which they show in the ad)?
When I'm toting my laptop, I need to carry a mouse and a power cord, among other things. I need my notebooks, pens, CD's, etc... If I carry this thing, not only will it not fit in my laptop backpack which I'll STILL have to carry, but now I've also lost one of my two carry-ons allowed on the plane. If I stuff my current Dell (or iBook) into my backpack, I've got everything I need plus room to spare, and I can also carry on a toiletries bag in case I get stranded.
If you want tough, go and buy a Miltope TSC-750 or any one of the rugged laptops from Niche. Besides, according to this article in MacWorld, the iBook is pretty tough as it is.

On the details ("detail") page,
CD-RECORDER DRIVE
It has a cd-r drive for imac, CDR-I420/IM(SONY CRX510E), made by Melco.
It is very useful when I work aborad. It makes it easy to transfer large data to Windows-using clients.
POWER KEY
The power key is solid aluminium. The same for the reset key.
SPEAKER
The speaker consists of a mesh of aluminium and a ring made of solid aluminium.
TRACK PAD
The button is made of solid aluminium. It feels wonderful when you click. Also, it prevents miss-clicks.
SLEEP LAMP
I made the sleep lamp out of a solid acrylic. It flashes when the mac is sleeping. Together with the apple mark, this is important for the look.
APPLE MARK
I made this apple mark by casting graphite-colored epoxy-resin into a mould I made with silicone by taking the shape of the apple mark on a blueberry ibook.
It glows softly by the light of the LCD backlight. (put your mouse pointor on the picture --novastyli)
PORT
The USB connector, whose position is a shorcoming of an ibook, was moved to the back, beefed up to a four-port hub. Of course, all other connectors are also on the back.
AIR MAC (Mech Mushroom)
It contains an air-mac inside. It works great when I work at places near my home, such as a park or a cafe.
