Re:How come 1.5 doesn't update to 2.0?
Firefox 2.0 won't come through Software Update for a few weeks, and even then, it will be optional. Software Update was made mainly for stability and security updates, not major feature additions.
So if you want Firefox 2.0 anytime soon, I suggest that you head on over to www.getfirefox.com and grab it for yourself.
I know, it is kinda disappointing for me too. I just loved the automation of it all. -
Don't wait for automatic update
The auto-update system will automatically apply security and stability updates. We're planning on providing an "optional" update to Firefox 2 through this system, and that will likely happen in a few weeks. In the meantime, please do download through getfirefox.com. As long as you do not use a direct ftp.mozilla.org or releases.mozilla.org, we're pretty confident in our ability to handle demand, thanks to our volunteer mirror network.
-
OFFICIAL STATEMENT
Firefox 2 has not yet been officially released. Please be patient. We still plan on launching Tuesday, October 24th in the afternoon pacific time. Linking to anything other than getfirefox.com or mozilla.com hurts us, our volunteer mirror network, and our ability to effectively serve up and guarantee availability of Firefox. Thank you! -- cbeard@mozilla.org

word to this
At this writing,
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
and
http://www.getfirefox.com/
and
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/
all only say Firefox 1.5. Come f-ing on, slashdot, after having jumped the gun several times on freebsd. do they really need emails from everyone that produces software saying "only announce things when they're really announced" before checking a single website or two to see if something's officially out? -
If only they would just use a proxy / encryption..
Granted, the EFF is trying to protect our rights as citizens, and in my opinion they are doing a decent job as such; however, people please.. it is your responsibility to protect your own privacy, and if you are doing something that you do not want others to know about, please please use a Good Encryption system, a Good Anonymizing Proxy for browsing the web, and definately get a Good Web Browser. If people would follow these three little tips, it would make eavesdropping on your communications about 100 times more difficult.

I prefer SUSE, Fedora or Ubuntu
This will probably get modded down as flamebait, but honestly I prefer SUSE over Mandriva (Mandrake). I have tried Mandrake many times over the past few years, and even joined their "Mandrake Club" a few years back when they were on the brink of Bankruptcy to help them out; however, I have always felt that their Distro was never QA'ed as well as SUSE or Redhat for that matter. When you fire up the latest SUSE, you tell you have a professionally QA'ed product, as everything works out of the box. With Mandriva on the other hand, everything looks great on paper. They always have some of the latest packages, and include alot of the new technology; however, there are always a few things that dont work well with my system after I install it. In fact, on more than one occasion, I've even had trouble installing a new release of Mandriva.
Now I have nothing against Mandriva, and I like urmpi, but I think I may pass on this release, or try it out on a Virtual machine first before getting rid of my SUSE and Fedora boxes.... Now there's a thought..

"Congratulations! You've downloaded or compiled a copy of Firefox 2 Beta 2. This means that you've volunteered to become part of the testing community. Helping out won't take much of your time, doesn't require special skills, and will help make the next version of Firefox even better.
Note: The Firefox 2 Beta 2 build you are using is NOT A FINAL VERSION of Firefox, it has been made available for testing purposes only, with no end-user support. If that sounds scary, you'd probably be better off with the latest version of Firefox that you can download here: http://www.getfirefox.com/" -

Re:I like your favourite quote and I hope M$ dies.
Well, i take care of 100's of websites and i'm actually very happy MS are pusing it through as an auto update. However, alot of the css bug fixes are still not implemented, so for now on, im goin to put my ieonly div within the if[ie] command to display the following: IE Fix Your browser might not render the page as intended. Please upgrade to a css compliant browser like opera or firefox You may laugh, but i feel i should stop catering for Microshafts incompetence, and the only way to do this, it to show Microshaft what happens when they create inferior products. I'm serious about this BTW!

Re:Windows Software Shop :-)
Imagine the trading price of MS if it did ship a list of known bugs alongside their products... I would think consumers would wait for a stable product before buying.
Nonsense. Every major open source project has a complete list of bugs for all versions of their product for all to see, usually right on their Web site, which you can read prior to downloading. For instance, if you click on the Release Notes for Firefox, linked to from the front page, you'll see not only a list of known issues in the current production release, but there's a link to their Bugzilla database so that you can read bugs that have recently been filed against it.
If people would really not buy a software product if they knew about all of it's bugs, then why would they download and install any open source applications? Because they don't have pay for them? Just because you don't pay for a piece of software, that doesn't mean it costs the user $0 to install and use. -
Re:He's sorta right, but mostly off targetinstructions are usually stored inside the tar file
Amazing, why didn't I think of that. Oh wait, I did, and this is what I got from readme.txt:
For information about installing, running and configuring Firefox including a list of known issues and troubleshooting information, refer to: http://getfirefox.com/releases/
So a quick jaunt over to that link, plus clicking through two more links, gets me to the install instructions for Linux.
Extract the tarball in the directory where you want to install Firefox:
tar -xzvf firefox-1.5.0.3.tar.gz
This will create a firefox subdirectory of that directory. And that would be great. The problem is, these instructions are incomplete. They won't change the little globe button on the top of your UI to point to the new Firefox, nor will your other applications which depend on Firefox start using the new version. You also lose all of your settings and bookmarks. Installing on Windows has *none* of these gotchas. After I did exactly what the instructions said I fired up Firefox, checked that it worked fine, and installed the new plugin that was requiring me to use 1.5 or higher. Then I went back to developing, came back to Firefox two hours later (via the globe button), and the plugin just wasn't there. I was stumped for a few seconds before I realized I actually had succeeded in making two entirely separate installs of Firefox on the machine. Then I Googled for instructions which would actually function. This is more hassle than any user should have to put up with for a freaking trivial use case -- "install the latest version of a killer app". I don't want to even *know* what I would have to do to get my iPod working at work.

Re:Bunk Camp? This guy got off at the wrong exit..
In my experience, the rebooting isn't so bad. It's definitely slower booting into WinXP than into Mac OSX, but on a fresh install, with very few software installs (save the typical anti-virus package) it's not in the realm of 3 minutes. I've learned that on a fresh install, if go into the control panel > internet options, and set the default homepage to http://www.getfirefox.com/ you can open up IE only once ever, just for the firefox download, and then you never have to mess with it ever again, thus eliminating the need to get a anti-spyware client. Additionally, I use CCleaner to completely dump all my temp files and cookies every week or so. It seems to keep my WinXP systems cleaner, and more junk free than say Ad-Aware and the Disk Cleanup system tool.

Gmail Space Firefox Extension
This will be interesting to see if this provides as much space as the Firefox extension, Gmail Space provides. The way it works, apparently, is to allow access to the file attachment method used by Gmail, providing an interface which appears to be like a file management interface. Very useful!
Hopefully Google will be good and provided enough space to make hacks like this obsolete. Not that they are bad, just inconvenient!

If you get Slashdotted, your key breaks.
Of course, I recommend using our SDK. It's robust and fast, and is way ahead of libgaim and other libs in terms of functionality.
Unless one of the following applies:
- She's developing for a platform to which AOL has not ported the SDK. Windows, Mac OS X, GNU/Linux x86, and Windows Mobile are not the only popular platforms. What about Nintendo DS homebrew, which just recently acquired the ability to connect to the Internet using its built-in 802.11b hardware?
- She's developing software that's intended to go in a free software repository such as Debian main (which requires that the entire program's source code be available to the public).
- She wants to make a multi-headed app that can speak both a proprietary secure protocol within a company and AIM protocol to the company's clients.
- She wants her software to be usable by people who connect from outside the United States.
- She wants her software to keep working once the Slashdot effect hits her download server, which she did not expect, people use up the however many thousand connections per day her deployment key allows, and she can't afford an unlimited deployment key. What if an app catches on like wildfire, as another program developed with AOL's help did? Has AOL publicly stated the price for deployment keys for over 250,000 users or otherwise stated whether it will be made affordable to hobbyists or even available to individuals?

Re:My experience with Linux
That is a sad story. That is definately not what Open Source is about. Unfortunately it is a result of you deciding to select Redhat as your first Linux Distrobution. Redhat is really an enterprise version of Linux that I would only recommend to medium-large businesses that want the reassurance of having a supported version of Linux.
If you want an easy to use, polished Linux Distrobution that *Just Works out of the box* with a thriving community I recommend that you try Ubuntu Linux (http://www.ubuntu.com/). You will like the Ubuntu difference (http://www.ubuntu.com/ubuntu):
"Ubuntu is Free Software, and available to you free of charge. It's also Free in the sense of giving you rights of Software Freedom, but you probably knew that already! Unlike many of the other commercial distributions in the free and open source world (Libranet, Lindows, Xandros, Red Hat) the Ubuntu team really does believe that Free software should be free of software licencing charges."
In fact they will even send you a copy free of charge (they will even pay for postage):
https://shipit.ubuntu.com/
You can safely use/deploy Ubuntu knowing that you will never be caught in an expensive update cycle. Ubuntu is tailored for the Desktop and as a result offers a superior Desktop experience than 'Redhat Enterprise Linux' which is more tailored for servers anyway.
Also you will always be able to get Firefox from the firefox website (http://www.getfirefox.com/ absolutely free of charge (although they do welcome donations). Firefox strives to be a free, standards compliant web browser that aims to work on many different platforms (i.e. ensuring that you don't have to buy Windows in order to surf the Internet). -
um, get firefox?

Ten compelling reasons why not to upgrade!
1. Security, security, security: New holes, new holes, new holes.
2. Internet Explorer 7: GetFirefox.
3. Righteous eye candy: Ooohhh shiny...
4. Desktop search: Learn to organize.
5. Better updates: Why update? Because it was broken in the first place!
6. More media: More DRM!
7. Parental controls: Real parents don't need an OS to babysit their kids.
8. Better backups: Already have that.
9. Peer-to-peer collaboration: ???
10. Quick setup: Why am I running setup more than once anyways?
In short, 10 compelling reasons why you don't need to upgrade to Vista. -
Re: So?
No joke! Did they suddenly become standards compliant? If not, that is really bad news. It looks great, but if I can't design a website using web standards and have IE7 display it properly, then it's no good to me as a developer. What's the point? Ooo, new pretty interface that looks nearly EXACTLY like Firefox, but with a neat tab preview thingy... but does not display web pages worth poop. Sorry, did I miss something here? Isn't the point of a browser to be able to correctly display the majority of web pages currently on the web? Not a flame, just a major concern.

Mac version
You can download the Mac version here!
Seriously, though, Mac OS and other platorms gaining ground on Windows. And Windows users are tiring of spyware and are switching to other browsers.
Are the developers out there starting to realize that not all users are IE/Windows users? Are developers starting to make their apps and sites browser-agnostic? If so, I'm not seeing much of it.
My browser-agnostic apps are not going IE/Windows only, but my IE/Windows apps aren't going browser-agnostic either.

Re:By the time IPv6 is ready
-
Oblig.
Due to a security flaw in your browser, some links on your computer have been damaged and are now pointing to the wrong websites, such as those that install spyware and adware. To correct this problem, Microsoft wishes to inform its customers that the correct link to Windows Update is actually this one. If you are a Windows user, we recommend that you update to the latest version immediately.

Re:Free solutions
I worked at a computer repair shop at one point, and my SOP is very similar, although I typically run HijackThis earlier in the process (Before removing programs), and I include - if necessary - some passes with other programs.
Worst-case Scenario:
1) Kill all unecessary processes manually (if able)
2) Run MSCONFIG and disable unecessary startup processes (if able)
3) Run Spybot S&D (if able)
4) Run HijackThis
5) Install Avast! AV and updates, and schedule a boot-time scan (if able)
6) Uninstall/manually remove unecessary applications
7) Reboot
8) Repeat all setps 1-6 which did not work the first time
9) Run Spybot S&D (again)
10) Install and configure Firefox with Adblock extension.
11) Install and configure SpywareBlaster
12) Lock Down IE
13) Reboot
14) Manually clean up any remnants with the help of HijackThis
15) Install and configure Kerio PF
It takes longer than is typically necessary of a simple cleanup, but so far I haven't run into anything that couldn't be fixed in such a manner. Most importantly however, it doesn't cost a dime. I keep both a USB flash drive and a CD on hand with all of the programs and updates I need as well as some other fallback programs (some pre-installed directly on the CD/flash drive), so if the infected machine is unable to connect for downloads/updates it won't slow me down. It also helps that IE is not needed when loading everything from the CD or flash drive.
Of all the machines I have used this on, only those of the incedibly stupid have had problems resurface, while most have run clean for a year or more. I use the same preventative measures on my own PC and have never picked up any spyware/malware. -
The Quick Work-around
Here is the easiest way to stop this from hurting you:
Turn off your computer.
P.S. Okay, seriously, use Firefox. -
Re:The best Microsoft patch to use...
You mean an eye-eee patch.
-
Re:Ummmm..... let's write a new OS!
"but as soon as ReactOS can run everything I need, I'll switch for sure!"
I said the same thing not but eight months ago. Then, about two months ago, I installed a Linux distro on my home desktop. I've installed plenty of them before, but they never stuck. Even the one I'm using right now (Gentoo) has been on this system at least half-a-dozen times. However, this time it stuck.
"And why's that?", you may ask. Well, over the past few years I've been migrating to Open Source Software! Replacing Microsoft Office with Open Office, replacing Photoshop with The GIMP, and of course replacing Internet Explorer with Firefox.
Anyway, once I got comforatible with the administration aspects of a Unix-like system, the software all fell into place. Most of the programs I use now on my NIX system are the same programs I used to use on my Windows install. And the best part is, if you enjoy fidling with stuff and don't mind recompiling loads of code, a Gentoo system (or just about any other non-bloated NIX distro) is at least twice as fast as a Win system.
Anyway, just saying Mac guy, if you want to take the plunge, go ahead and do it. You'll be pleasently supprised.
That's my $0.02.

Re:No MSI build for Firefox - no mass deployment
The MSI needs to be on the http://www.getfirefox.com/ page and not on some obscure site that only well informed techies seem to know about.

Get Firefox!
Most home users don't have a network computer.
That is, unless they've installed one. XUL and AJAX apps over even entry-level residential broadband make you think you're almost using a local app.
-
Re:What a checksum is for
Cool.
Where are those on http://www.mozilla.org/ or http://www.getfirefox.com/? I just spent 15 minutes searching for the MD5 sums for the latest Firefox (1.0.7) and until I dug my way thru their ftp server, I couldn't find them.
Assume most people get their software thru a web site and most clueless users don't know FTP from FTD, and then rant to me about getting the hashes from a trusted website. -
Re:Choice...
My father is exactly that average guy and he simply downloaded and installed firefox after I recommended him Firefox
Later, he set the default browser to be firefox and fortunately he never had any serious problem -
Re:Zero comments, slashdotted
There is already a solution like what you propose.
I use firefox and greasemonkey with this script installed.
Problem solved.
Peace -
Right... (The Parody Remix)Yeah, but there are certain occasions where Internet Explorer is of no help (e.g., standards-compliant web pages, CSS stuff, etc.). A world-class browser that introduced proper MIME handling, didn't have extensive rendering bugs, and exposed a W3C-compliant DOM tree would tremendously cut down on some of the major headaches that many web designers are currently experiencing. All without having to sacrifice security, too.
Don't get me wrong, I love Internet Explorer as much as the next malware author, but don't we all want a world-class browser for our friends as well?

Re:How do you know?
haaaa hahahahahaha.
I'm sorry, I'm sorry, you're right - everyone knows the best software is determined solely by market share. Especially with concepts like "monopoly", "de-facto standard", "must interoperate" and "FUD" around.
Everyone knows markets are the perfect selectors of quality, right? That's why crappy Linux or *BSD can't break into the desktop, and Microsoft owns the world.
Numbnuts.
Market share determines who has the best marketing department, who was first to market, who's willing to abuse their position to extend a monopoly of theirs into other areas, or who has the most successful vendor-lockin. While ideally quality alone will win out, in practice it very, very rarely does, since any of the examples listed above generally trump mere "quality" on its own.
I'd agree that markets would be a perfect selector: in a perfect world, all things being equal, if every piece of software worked in isolation and every purchaser was perfectly accurately educated in the pros and cons of evry product on the market.
Unfortunately, this ain't going to happen any time soon. -

If the browser is really the only new feature, why doesn't someone just port a decent browser to the PSP?
