Firefox market share will increase even more!
Say 7.0 is standards compliant and every XP user will upgrade to 7.0, thus 90% of IE users use 7.0. Most webdevs will stop supporting IE 6.0, as it's not worth supporting that few per cent (because it is a lot of work). Then 98/ME/2000 (I think) users will be doomed because they can't view those sites. They blame the browser and download something better. Then IE's market share will decrease - and Firefox's will increase even more!
-
Re:Built in
Obviously, Firefox is the way to go...
-
Re:Maybe not news, but definitely good marketing.
This, partially, is the difference between Firefox and most other OSS products. There's a huge effort to encourage widespread adoption. It's really admirable - look at http://www.getfirefox.com/, http://www.spreadfirefox.com/ (the one that was hacked, shh,) the NYtimes advert. It's all far more organised and well executed than any "advertising" others put out. And it's working, along with the efforts of its faithful users. Eventually, even the "no way" group will switch over, if people keep trying. There will be no incentive whatsoever to stay, as there will be so many other people already adopted it.

The real test...
The real test will be when the new IE 7 comes out... I predict (and hope) that FireFox will continue to gain even when the "new and improved" IE get's here. http://www.getfirefox.com/

Re:Uh
No need to use Internet Explorer to download it either.
I got one link for you:
Kick IE to the curb
Then you won't get those pesky, innocent looking ActiveX controls OF DOOM! -
Re:Microsoft Wants Your First Born
GMail prevents MSIE from remembering your password. GMail sucks.
Umm... try out this Firefox thing. I hear it's free. And really good. And stuff.Oh... and GMail rocks!
-
Re:Referer blocked
Go get Firefox.
-
No thanks
i prefer to get my browser from the organ grinder, not the monkey
-
Re:Elaboration?
Do you know what I want to see? I want to see that killer app that everyone wants to use require Firefox or another decently CSS-standard following browser.
Imagine if GMail, even just in it's beta phase, had said 'Sorry, Internet Explorer does not support the features necessary to use this website. Download Firefox for free here.' Imagine what that could have done to pressure microsoft to start supporting the standards.
I really think all it's gonna take is somebody with the right application that everybody wants to use, and the moxie to give ol' Internet Explorer the finger. -
Re:Now that THAT'S out of the way...One of the reasons IE is very used is exactly because many webpages can't be viewed by any other browser.
Another would be that it's embedded in the Windows O/S.
You know, I really don't have many problems viewing webpages in Firefox. The problem I have is developing a site that is standards compliant (CSS for example) and that would work for ANY browser. IE breaks that compliance more often than not...

IE is not a Browser
Using IE as a browser is like putting your OS on the internet. Be smart, use a PROGRAM, not your OS to surf the web. Get Firefox http://getfirefox.com.

Re:Not being trollish, but...

Not really much...
I'm using Firefox with Adblock extension. This blocks out unwanted images, and in addition, I block out certain elements of my internet banking provider, like uneeded images, and such. This speeds up browsing, as I'm on 56K modem. I don't see how browsing with images turned off or having privoxy or adblock do blacklisting is different from this new service... Seriously, it is not that kind of stuff that is needed. Modem is fine for surfing the web, but not for downloading. So if they want a ISO, loband won't help at all...

Re:OT: Goddamn popups
Get a better browser. Install adblock, and remove your spyware. You should not be getting popups on Slashdot, and if you are, it's your own bloody fault.

So...proprietary RSS?
What the article doesn't make clear is whether or not this means that any of these three publications will make plain-vanilla RSS readily available. If they will, they'll have a hard time convincing people to use their own branded software. If not (e.g. if their RSS feeds are somewhat proprietary), they're shooting themselves in the foot. RSS is an established, working standard. The main complaint of many content providers over RSS is that it's not quite as ad-friendly as regular HTML content (this is a feature, not a bug, if you're a reader).
The Denver Post hasn't had an RSS feed all this time; if they finally post one, I might start reading them more regularly. If, on the other hand, I have to use their proprietary software for their proprietary RSS feed (which almost certainly will be a Windows 2K/XP only application), they'll see my readership decline 100%.
Better idea for content providers: give your readers Firefox and Sage to read your feeds. You'll be giving them a great RSS feeder and be doing them a favor by also providing them with a secure, standards-compliant web browser. -

Why anyone would browse with PSP is beyond me
That's what Firefox is for. What's next, web browsing through Photoshop?

Trillian isn't OSS
While I understand your point, I'd like to point out that Trillian isn't open source.
On a side note, K-Meleon and Trillian aren't cross-platform. I consistently put my friends and family on Firefox, Thunderbird, and Gaim, so that when they eventually move to Linux (an inevitability, I think, barring an Apple-based purchase), they'll be well-acquainted with the applications they'll use most.

/. Interview edition of Firefox (1.0.2) is now out
Good timing or what? Go and grab it from getfirefox.com.

No dammit, no!
Once I install Service Pack 2 and I'm secure, I install SpyBot and immunize my Internet Explorer from the copy of SpyBot I have on my DVD. I then install my anti-virus software. Only now do I connect to the Internet and download the latest virus signatures, and motherboard, video card, and sound card drivers from the manufacturer webpages.
No, you go here and install this nifty software called a good browser. Then you can immunize IE, delete every damn icon with the blue "E", or simply leave it as is. And don't enter the URL in Explorer's location bar, for God's sake!

Someone should call them on this
What we need is for a high-traffic site (ex. Google, Ebay, Yahoo, etc) to make it so their page will not load completely in browsers that do not meet standards like these. I'm thinking a page that says "Your browser (Internet Explorer) is not XYZ compliant. Please upgrade to a browser that follows accepted standards, like firefox, opera, etc" with a link that would take you to the page anyway.
I know that this would take a lot of balls on that company's part but action like this is the only thing that Microsoft is going to understand. The first big site to do it would lose some amount of visitors but it would also generate more non-IE users and pressure on MS to follow standards. Eventually MS would wise up and comply as the amount of people switching away from IE becomes too large to ignore. The end result is that either IE will be made compliant or it will lose some of its dominant market share, both good things. -
My proposal for the test page.
I humbly submit my idea for building a new page for Microsoft to test IE7 with to make sure it does everything Web designers want it to.
Get Firefox!
If it can properly render that link, I'll be satisfied. -

For arguing with others.
Oh, btw, you can create hyperlinks in your .sig.

Let's hope the extra terrestrials are prepared...
Quick, we have to pre-emptively beam ad blocker software and filtering rules into space to prepare the extra terrestrials for the onslaught. Think they've Got Firefox yet?

Re:Baited with Red Herrings
simply to work the ad banners on his site.
Really? Hmm...
I don't have any ads in my browser for Dvorak's article. -
Who will pay for Firefox bugs?
Who will pay for the Firefox bugs? It is too bad I can't trust Firefox due to the fact that Firefox is full of gaping security holes. Firefox has so many security flaws you could drive a truck through them. These horrible security failures include:
-Installing Firefox requires downloading an unsigned binary from a random web server
-Installing unsigned extensions is the default action in the Extensions dialog
-There is no way to check the signature on downloaded program files
-There is no obvious way to turn off plug-ins once they are installed
-There is an easy way to bypass the "This might be a virus" dialog
For more information on these security flaws, be aware that Firefox has also killed Linux - NOW THAT I HAVE FIREFOX, I HAVE NO NEED FOR LINUX! Yay open sores!

For cripes sakes people, make a HOSTS file.
After using Dan Pollock's hosts file for a few months, virtually all of that monkey business has disappeared. That, Firefox, and Adblock have made the web bearable for me.

Re:Doesn't look like 1.0.1 to me
The address is http://www.getfirefox.com/ - the little green box in the top-right lets you download FFwin 1.0.1
;)
Need other builds? Click the little linky right below that one that says "Other systems and builds" - see how all the version numbers are very clearly marked? The new ones are even in bold!
The main mozilla.org site only seems to be on the ball when it comes to Mozilla builds or major project releases. These point releases are *always* at the project sites first. Go figure that, eh? -
Re:its dieing
With your argument, does that mean that Firefox. is the saviour of the internet?
;) -
Re:Hopefully a good thing
Popup ads? Huh? What's a popup ad?
-
Re:More = Better?
Truthfully I've downloaded Firefox several times but at separate workstations (where it is still being used).
The thing we have to think about is that we are counting version 1.0 only. It isn't like they are counting milestone (nightly) releases either, so we are pretty much counting people who entered the Mozilla.org homepage (or www.getfirefox.com) and downloaded Firefox. It may be pretty close.
Think about it though. Software companies who want to charge for software, charge "per seat" (at minimum). I mean, if I dual-boot and run Firefox in both operating systems I think it should count twice. No matter we all know that Gecko is the future. -
How Do I Get Sex?This question isn't for me but I'm asking for a friend. Anyway I have this friend who isn't that good looking but he's a huge computer nerd. Thus at college he was able to get much sex in exchange for fixing girls' computers.
His question is that since Firefox came out he is able to get significantly less sex due to their computers having less spyware and viruses. Firefox also has tabbed browsing. He is worried that if the Mac Minis catch on then he will be completely celibate. Do you have any advice for my friend?

as the de facto sysadmin of my family...
As the de facto sysadmin of my family it's a one browser world (regardless of platform). There are only so many spyware/adware/malware removal sessions on Windows that I can do in my life.

It Can Suck a Lot Less
* Wipe machine.
* Unplug from net.
* Re-install Windows.
* Install SP2 from a CD.
* Install a virus scanner.
* Install Firefox.
* Remove IE icon from desktop.
* Plug network cable into machine. -
Recommend Firefox to customers?This is off-topic, but I want to ask you about it since you don't have a Firefox button on your web site.
Do you recommend Firefox or Thunderbird to customers when they complain about viruses and trojans coming through IE and Outlook? If so, you should sign up at SpreadFirefox.com where you could earn a link back to your web site if you accumulate enough referral points to show up on the roll call. You also get a blog there.
