IAAB (I Am A Belgian)So why does this still work http://news.google.com/news?ned=fr_be
I still see "La Libre Belgique" a french speaking newspaper
But when I do this: http://news.google.be/news?ned=fr_beIt's not there anymore.
Guess what Belgians will do next? BTW there is no such thing as Belgian waffles, Canadian Bacon, or Filet Americain. Right about the beer though! -
The entire relative right-n-wrong bullshittery...
There seems to be a misconception around "right" and "wrong". What the other finds "right" another man can experience this as "wrong". Clinton involved adultery and lying; which is in the christian way "wrong" because you cannot sleep with someone else when married. What Bush did ; seems to be a "right" way and without trolling I could almost say "the right christian way" since he seems to be "in touch with God" from what I've read...
Although ; which God would take pain, torturing, abuse, war and agony over a blowjob? Maybe the better question now; to tear away religion as a factor: Which HUMAN would take pain, torturing, abuse, war and agony over a blowjob?
Interesting question I guess; since the majority seems to be agreeing with such mentality while their skin creeps over seeing the torturing tools from the dark ages and torturing of animals.
Still, I am not really suprised; since we also live in a time where a human life is less worth than a copied piece of music; since; you'll loose more copying a CD instead of raping or killing your neightbours. I'm totally not wishing of anyone to get vegatarian because of that cruel animal torturing but what I do wish is that people do mind their OWN life and RESPECTING other lives in the same degree as that you'd respect your OWN life; no hidden agendas breaking other lives. Guess that wish can be classified with "I want world peace" ;) -

Benelux ad against piracy "piraterij i/e misdrijf"
There is an advertisement (from BREIN) shouting out "Piraterij is een misdrijf!" (Piracy is a crime!) on quite a few DVD's sold in the Benelux. The ad shows a thief stealing a bike, a purse and a cellphone while showing a girl who started downloading a movie from the Internet. The analogy is completely ackwards and utter bullshit.
To my belief, when copying a movie you break COPYRIGHT laws, but they did not loose any physical DVD's from it by someone stealing it and putting it in his/her pockets; taking it home. This way of not-skippable-propaganda makes me mad, since now, anyone who uses P2P seems to be a criminal in that short advertisement, because, downloading is a crime, because, you are a thief! It doesn't only make you a thief but it also shows you will get a bad image from "stealing" movies.
I've got 4 DVD's with DVD-ROT; the underside is in perfect condition but both movies hang when going to the second layer; 3 DVD's that hang at the MAIN MENU, when pressing "Play movie" it hangs; you need to use the chapter selection to start the movie.
I've downloaded 3 movies and burned them on DVD; since; I've already bought the movies *and* the movies are *ALL* having the same problem. (Fear and loathing in Las Vegas is one of them). Each one of those disks I already replaced at the shop, they all got the same problem (distribution error)? They do cost 12-23 euro / piece. -
Depends on which country (couldn't resist)
does that cat knows any secrets?
russian cat: Where secret's don't kill the cat but the cat kills you!
Polish cat: *pop*
dutch cat: I'm too stoned, leave me alone.
Cartoon cat: In little pieces you go for knowing my classification level!
USA cat: I can tell you but then I have to kill you!
English cat: Martini please, shaken, not stirred (while thinking: I'm using my license to kill)
Iraki cat: *boom*
Smart cat: Got to report this to the cryptonomium
My cat: is there any food left?
Your cat might be in the resistance too, using secret bio-weapons, taking over every human on this planet. Do look for any unusual behavior, running around like crazy to train for any happening incidents, owning property, peeking through blankets or small spaces, eavesdropping and much more. -

One point where IE is still superior to FF
This is a pet peeve of mine...
When bookmarking a web page with frames, only the top frame is bookmarked, and the location of the sub-frames won't be remembered. IE does this correctly.
I don't like sites which use frames, but it's still used on a lot of sites. Example: Google groups. And I would like to be able to bookmark these pages too.
The bug in Bugzilla: Frame State Bookmarking (frameset bookmarks) (copy link and paste in new browser window, they don't allow linking from Slashdot). This bug exists since 2000... Please vote for it. -

Re:Well you won't have to
The problem is, to which platforms will this blueray extend? Will it only stay a DVD player or will they also make recorders, supported together with Microsoft next-upcoming "trusted platform"?
It's the time where DRM is getting the new buzzword, to protect the average citizen from terrorism and jerking off, to consume and to be what companies tell you need to be ...
I am not fully informed in how far blueray will be extended to the computer market but if it gets a boost somewhere there might still be a market hell lying ahead of us, if it is being adopted in the PC market and it gets extended to "HD TV" on PC and TV, it might be very nice looking for the average consumer; who gets what he gets served by his salesdroid. I've seen dozens of blunders in big computer-audio-and-video-stores around where consumers are buying the (most) expensive stuff because their salesdroid is giving the right words and attitude.

I think it shouldn't be bought! And by that, I state that it's a pretty sick mind's need to play such a game. There is something to be done by all educating parties: parents, school and most importantly, the media. comment.
Who are you to define what is sick in my mind ? (you can't beat a good old ST prime directive conundrum )
It's just sad that some parents can't make out the difference between a titled "Mario Kart" and "Grant Theft Auto"
Parents who don't play games are going to have a tough time selecting games for their kids if they are clueless about their content (same thing for movies, except these same parents might know a tad more about them). Just because your kids do something doesn't mean you have to become an expert on the subject.
BTW my gf and I both being video-game-junkie DINKS I might not be the most authoritative person on the subject, but I can sure feel for those clueless parents (I've guided one or two lost souls in the VG section of the supermarket) -
eID
I just picked up my eID. which generates both a "signature", and has other unique data.
I started playing with the API's, and the options are endless; even am trying to work out how to replace most login mechanisms and replace them by the eID in conjuction with the PIN-code in the office as it would solve ALOT of password problems. (which actually evolved to "tricks" which void "annoying" security measures)
As far I know Americans do not have an ID, and not every American is required to carry one at all times, which.. well would make it a hard thing to let the government "help" with security in this way. I only see advantages to the obligation to carry an ID overhere, and never knew it different either.
It might pop up in the US as well though, as Bill Gates has showed alot of interest in this kind of technology. But maybe not in the form of a passport-like ID; In the company my brother works at Microsoft actually checked out their simular identificationsystem they had develloped named port-e-key.
I believe these are the future for identification, perhaps with added layers like biometric identification.

Re:Oil industry?
Don't just take whack at it without looking at the numbers!
How the hell you got a "5, Insightful" for this is beyond me.
Try goggling a little maybee:" http://www.google.be/search?q=electricity+producti on+source " For my country at least plugging in cars will decrease the dependance of personal transportation on fossile fuels by more than 60%. NOT counting the fact that power stations burn oil more efficiently than cars. The US has a higher rate of fossile fuel dependancy, but you should also take into account that gas burns cleaner than gasoline. And trust me coal is declining very rapidly. -
Why not use 911-5555 ??
What keeps us from using 911-1111 inhere?
Why would he have endangered a life with it? It seems to be 911-5555 is a perfect valid number even ...
I know if I dial 100 and I add 1111; the emergency services here will not be dialed ... I guess the phone systems are that smart overseas not?
Which bot would anyway be that stupid to catch numbers like that?

Which bot would be even stupid to get (911) 1111 or (911) 5555 or 911 5555 ? -

Re:Who hates that all-in-deviceThe multifunction cellphones that will be available in a couple of years are sure to make my gadgetbag a lot lighter. I can't wait!
Todays mobile phone cams do blow, but the quality achieved by very small cameras like the Canon Ixus I (Powershot 10) is impressive and getting better. And because miniaturisation is happening continually, adding a lot of functions to a device doesn't necessarily make it bulkier... This Ixus could grow into a phone/pda/mp3player adding just a couple of chips to it (the battery and the display are already there so turning it into a phone wouldn't add much bulk to it)
A phone won't replace my D70 soon, but I'm convinced that in a couple of years my D70 will remain on the shelf most of the time because my phone will be good enough for 90% of my photography needs.

The Grateful Dead?

Seriously, I LOVE the Dead. on my first job, early 90's, I came long this little gem (on an IBM VM/SP, just before the intarweb became familiar - thanks to BITNET and the GDEAD mailing list)?

Re:America vs. Europe
I always wondered why Half-Life had these 'bot' skins, as seen here. I've been playing HL since 1998 and I've never understood why these skins are in, they're not even skins of characters in the single-player game, and all the other skins are. Then I read somewhere that those skins were made for the German version of the game, where the human Grunts (army soldiers, there to shut you up for good, yadda yadda) are replaced by robots gone totally friggin mad 0MGz0r! Talk about killing the story-line of the game... I also believe that scientists couldn't be killed by the player. You can always let them stand under an automatic door and let them get squished when it closes. ent_scientist1 was killed by func_door (or something)

Different versions of Google
I find it interesting to see the slight variations of Google...geeky although it might seem - when I type http://www.google.com/ I am thrown to http://www.google.be/, so when I really want http://www.google.com/ I type http://www.google.com./ instead of using the "Go to Google.com" button (which sends me to the google.com page with a "Go to Google Belgium" button.
The definitive address with the dot at the end introduces itself as Google English in the graphic, but still has a "Go to Google.com" button, whilst clearly being the genuine definitive http://www.google.com./...but this version doesn't have the link to Froogle...
:)Phew - that's enough links to Google for one day!

Re:Improper use of "Hacker"
"Computer hacking" is defined as "operating a computer in a manner inconsistent with it's designed intent".
Hmmm. I guess it depends on the one creating these definitions. According to Google, `hacker' is a slang term for a computer enthusiast. Among professional programmers, the term hacker implies an amateur or a programmer who lacks formal training. Depending on how it used, the term can be either complimentary or derogatory, although it is developing an increasingly derogatory connotation. The pejorative sense of hacker is becoming more prominent largely because the popular press has co-opted the term to refer to individuals who gain unauthorised access to computer systems for the purpose of stealing and corrupting data. Hackers, themselves, maintain that the proper term for such individuals is cracker.

AVI does support multiple audio tracks
It may be that most media players can't deal with it, but the AVI format certainly supports multiple audio tracks, and it always has, as Google confirms. BTW, have you looked at MOV (QuickTime)? It's better than AVI, and it is better known than the other formats you list.

Sorry, no.
No, OS/2 up to version 2.0 was jointly developed by Microsoft and IBM. It was released under both the IBM and Microsoft brands, so you had MS OS/2 and IBM OS/2 which were essentially the same product. Google, or look at a boot screen or some promotional material.

Re:"Interesting" My Foot
This kind of petty (it's just a name), inmature (flooding people's e-mail), public arguing is one of the reasons Linux isn't getting the acceptance it should.
Perhaps you are referring to the buy off and other techniques some companies use for manipulating the world to their will.
I'm not saying they have not right to do this, but your argument here is flawed. -
hacker/crackerthis is actually getting pretty boring to reply to this, but this definition explains it nicely:
On USENET, calling someone a "cracker" is an unambiguous statement that some person persistently gets his/her kicks from breaking from into other peoples computer systems, for a variety of reasons. S/He may pose some weak justification for doing this, usually along the lines of "because it's possible", but most probably does it for the "buzz" of doing something which is illicit/illegal, and to gain status amongst a peer group.
Particularly antisocial crackers have a vandalistic streak, and delete filestores, crash machines, and trash running processes in pursuit of their "kicks".
The term is also widely used to describe a person who breaks copy protection software in microcomputer applications software in order to keep or distribute free copies.
On USENET, calling someone a "hacker" is usually a statement that said person holds a great deal of knowledge and expertise in the field of computing, and is someone who is capable of exercising this expertise with great finesse. For a more detailed definition, readers are referred to the Jargon File [Raymond].
In the "real world", various media people have taken the word "hacker" and coerced it into meaning the same as "cracker" - this usage occasionally appears on USENET, with disastrous and confusing results.
Posters to the security newsgroups should note that they currently risk a great deal of flamage if they use the word "hacker" in place of "cracker" in their articles.
NB: nowhere in the above do I say that crackers cannot be true hackers. It's just that I don't say that they are...
Just google for getting more results and descriptions on the subject. -
Lie detectors said the same thing 20 years ago
here's what google thinks about such classic lie detectors.
My guess is that in 20 years this chip will turn out to be a hoax tool that had people scentenced for nothing. I say drop it. -

One word : google
I do understand that guns are a critical issue in every society, and that everyone is involved when it comes to discussions about guns, but apart from thinkgeek toys, I see little nerd-related issues in such a discussion on this website. Most of all since the majority of nerds have a big problem with serious, open and honest discussions. We can't even make our minds up when it comes to text editors. How in heavens name do you expect any interesting results from the comments of this article ? You could as well ask for a poll and base your conclusions on that.
I find the submitter of the article to be a lazy bum who is not willing to form his own opinion based upon serious research on the topic. Walk into a library, read a newspaper, talk to real people with which you can actually exchange information (as in : two-directional)... /. comments are an avalanche of badly formulated, biased, vaguely interesting and incoherent brainfarts. It's called 'comments', not 'discussions' for some reason.
To the moderators : if you mod me offtopic here, you sould seriously considering reading all the comments at -1. You'll probably find a lot of people with my opinion being filtered away. -
