Re:If advertised as a laptop in the UK
I guess the question is does laptop imply a physical keyboard
Yes. https://www.google.com/search?...
or merely a size and the ability to type even if it is a virtual keyboard that has relocated the typing surface to the screen?

Re:What privacy?
As long as the terms of the transaction are clear
They are not clear. Nowhere does Google and the rest give you a full list of what they're tracking you on. Even on their privacy terms, they only provide "examples".

Other way around
Universities were able to extract more money from students because of loans, and used that money to hire more administrators who did not help improve student performance in any way. That's why cost has gone up - because they had more money to throw around, they hired more paper pushers who don't actually help with anything. Not the other way around as you seem to think. If that one link isn't enough to convince you, take your pick.

Re:Didn't Like Eich
Google is actually very clear about what it knows about you via Chrome: https://www.google.com/chrome/...
TL;DR make sure you set a sync password and Google won't be able to read anything the browser syncs, and if you use search suggestions and safe browsing be aware of what that requires being sent to the server.

Re:Kinda goes withhout saying, ...Very noble of you to be so principled.
Meanwhile you are going to be out voted by hordes flying the flag of the traitors. They will also mark you an enemy because anyone who is not 100% them is their enemy.
Someday you will realize, for all their faults, the Democrats are an order of magnitude better than the Republicans. Not saying the Democrats are great or ideal. They fall short of ideal by an order of magnitude too. But way better than Republicans.

This sentance hurt my brain
""The bill asks the federal government to set aside $20 million in funding for organizations to use to look at the types of benefits programs individual workers could take with them from job to job."
look at the types of benefits programs? For fucks sake, can we please just have Medicare for All already and a proper safety net? We don't need exploratory committees. We already know what works and what doesn't. -

Re:I don't think anybody here is fooled
In five minutes with Google search I learned that drone control signals are digitally encrypted,
And I found otherwise.
so how are you coming to the conclusion that my opinion is in error
You didn't express an opinion, you made a statement of fact. This is about encryption and backdoors. No, it isn't.
setting a legal precedent by getting a smaller company to do as I say would be a great and powerful first step towards geting a Judge to force a larger company (like Apple) to do as I say.
They don't have to do as you say.

Podcasts would be the adoption moment I think.
Since the death of Google Reader my most used case of RSS is podcasts. I get the occasional feed notification from IFTTT but most of the websites I used to get RSS from just have direct channels that are a little better and a little easier.
But podcasts however I listen to a fair number of podcasts and I have about 30-40 of them in my reader (Podcast Addict). I'd like a readable JSON format for syndication but if it's going to mess with my podcasts I won't bother.

Re: This is bait.
I know plenty of history. Well, there's a lot of it, and it keeps growing, but it's always good to know more. And the scientific body of knowledge (and people in general) were fucking terrible back in the 1800's. And they were worse in the 1400's. And WORSER in the 400's. But thricely I say unto thee, it's gotten better.
But yes, as far as institutions that I trust, the various science institutions on the whole are right up there. Because the institutions are run by scientists who search for the truth and enjoy being less wrong and calling bullshit on others. There's plenty of science institutions I don't trust. Like those start-up for-profit open journals. They're just scams. They don't actually peer review anything. But there are plenty of good scientific journals out there filled with people doing their job. Mostly. Reproducibility is a growing concern. Academia, for all it's faults, still does a damn good job of supporting the truth as a pillar of society. I also like the FDA and USDA having consumed food outside of the USA. And I trust the IRS will come find me and flog me if I just don't pay my taxes like I trust foxnews to spin whatever they can in favor of the GOP.
Jesus christ, if you DON'T trust any sort of institution then you might as well be a freaking anarchist/prepper and this whole "society" thing just isn't for you. Because what's the alternative? Distrusting ALL governments, organizations, religions, and companies? Only getting your worldly insight from +5 modded slashdot posts? That doesn't seem.... mentally healthy.
If you're advocating for only trusting... I dunno... "young things" because they "start out with good intentions" then you have to look at the recent rise of new political movements, tech start-ups, the brand-spanking new governments of Iraq and ISIS, those for-profit journals I mentioned, and the relatively new corporation of Facebook.
...ick.But no, the REASON I trust old institutions of science is because they are, by the very roots of the scientific process, open to change when a better way presents itself. Things keep getting better for humanity. Keep up with the times or, like you said, become corrupted. Same thing with the USA. For all it's faults, it's founders went to a lot of work to give us the tools to make it better.

Re:Yet another social justice story
I'm not really into comic books, can you explain the relation to DC comics?
Comic book sales waaaay down recently.
And it corresponds directly to the SJW takeover of comics.

Which must be why Stan Lee and Marvel Comics have told the SJWs to pound sand.

Re:directions please . . .
The one who is very dim is you.
In the absence of GPS you have not much ways to define where you are and where you want to go to.
So the "navigators" agreed on an international standard. I actually gave some links, why you are to dumb to read them is beyond me. So I give you a new one: https://www.google.com/search?...
Do you wonder why those pictures all look the same? And are not randomly rotated? Hu?
I guess you don't. So I explain it to you. That are pictures, and maps look the same, where north is up, south is down, east is right and west is left. That is the "standard" for maps, but it helps to check the "legend", some times maps are not orientated "north up"
Or if you you simply are really to dump to grasp it: north is along the 0 meridian. South is along the 180 meridian and west is along the 90 degrees west meridian and east is along the 90 degrees east meridian.
If you find a better way to navigate in the Antarctics or Arctics you are free to propose it to the naval and air travel standard institutes.
And now get of my lawns, idiot.

turn Manhattan into a new Venice
On the plus side, at least significant portions of Manhattan are build on solid bedrock. Venice, not so much: most of those buildings have a foundation of timber piles...driven into clay...in a lagoon.
On that subject, writer Kim Stanley Robinson has a new book about a Venice-like NYC. Here is an overview and interview with the author. -
Re:2017
For me it is. I installed it yesterday (because I got fed up with some Windows 10 policies). I went with Ubuntu 17.04. First thing I wanted to do was install Chrome because that's what I'm used to using. But when I tried to install it, it didn't install. I don't know why. I'm sure I'll figure it out with enough time spent on it because I'm fairly tech savvy (or just stick with Firefox) but I don't think the average person would be able to deal with stuff like this. It's not ready for the desktop.
I typed this into a browser: google.com/chrome/ There was a download link to get chrome: https://www.google.com/chrome/... The only difference here is using a
.deb or .rpm file for Linux instead of a .msi or .exe file for Windows Once it's installed it will get updates via apt if you're on ubuntu -
Easy to prevent via patches/workarounds
From MS - SMB Ports 445/139 (TCP) & 137/138 (UDP) protection via:
Disable SMBv1 on the SMB server, configure the following registry key:
Registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters Registry entry: SMB1
REG_DWORD: 0 = Disabled
REG_DWORD: 1 = EnabledDefault: 1 = Enabled
Enable SMBv2 on the SMB server, configure the following registry key:
Registry subkey:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters Registry entry: SMB2
REG_DWORD: 0 = Disabled
REG_DWORD: 1 = EnabledDefault: 1 = Enabled
---
Disable SMBv1 on the SMB client, run the following commands:
sc.exe config lanmanworkstation depend= bowser/mrxsmb20/nsi
sc.exe config mrxsmb10 start= disabled
Enable SMBv2 & SMBv3 on the SMB client, run the following commands:
sc.exe config lanmanworkstation depend= bowser/mrxsmb10/mrxsmb20/nsi
sc.exe config mrxsmb20 start= auto
APK
P.S.=> For a SINGLE 'standalone' non-networked PC (no home network/LAN) just turn off Server & Workstation services. It shuts off any "handles" (port 445) this thing propogates thru + turn off NetBIOS over TCP/IP in your internet connection & uncheck/disable Client for Microsoft Networks + File and Print Sharing. Port 139 & 445 always pop up issues over time.
I covered all this 11++ yrs. ago in a security guide I wrote for users with a single system & apparently, its advice STILL STANDS THE "TEST OF TIME" ala https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&biw=&bih=&q=%22HOW+TO+SECURE+Windows+2000%2FXP%22&btnG=Google+Search&gbv=1/ vs. even today's threats like this one.
* This effectively makes this threat a non-issue + saves you CPU cycles/RAM & other I/O wasted on services you don't NEED as a single PC user only... & you don't. They're just wastes with a single PC really. Many services are (covered in guide above based on CIS Tool guidance (who took fixes to their ware from "yours truly" too, no less)).
Of course, don't be STUPID & click on attachments in bogus malicious emails this thing propogates thru as well (Chrome/Opera/Webkit users - BEWARE of the ShellControlFile issue that just popped up (.scf file) noted here-> http://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/05/17/chrome_on_windows_has_credential_theft_bug/ )

Re:One word: sadness
Don't look at it as population numbers alone, but as energy used and pollution produced per person. The U.S.A. is a problem.
I agree that the US is an energy pig, but there are two counter points:
There's a hell of alot more counter points than that. Only 7% of our energy usage is residential: https://upload.wikimedia.org/w...
So per capita isn't even a great measure. We have a huge GDP with alot of industry, which equates to a great deal of energy usage. If you take GDP into account, the US ranks somewhere around Canada in terms of efficiency (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_ratio_of_GDP_to_carbon_dioxide_emissions). Both India and China have tremendously poor efficiency ratings at the bottom of the list.
So the US isn't a beacon of efficiency being mid-pack, but not nearly as bad as the usual "5% of the population causing 15% of emissions". It's more like 25% of the world's total industry is causing 15% of emissions: https://www.google.com/search?...
Considering the fact the vast majority of the world's industry is in the US, EU, and China, it is no surprise they're the top 3 carbon emitters: https://wri.org/blog/2014/11/6...

Actually, yes you can. Google delivers food to my house quite often. Although it is mostly non perishable but they do deliver bread and other edibles.

Re:A resolution to patent hoarding.
I have an idea. Every patent that has been granted in the last 20 years that is not actively being used should be forced to go up for auction. I'm guessing a trillion or two would come flying out of tax havens...
Probably not. Most patents don't last anywhere near the full 20 years, because the USPTO (as well as foreign patent offices) charge "maintenance fees" or "annuity fees" that increase throughout the lifetime of the patent. Fail to pay those, and the patent goes abandoned. In the US, those fees go up to $7400. In Europe, it's $787.50 Euros... annually. Pay all the fees through the full 20 year term, and you're spending an additional $20-30k on the patent - so, for Apple, with their 56 patents, that's potentially $100-150k for just this set.
Instead, most companies prune their patents, and let the ones that have become obsolete go abandoned. In the US, most patents last around 12 years.
