I've been in the habit of cross-posting stuff to FB and G+. I don't think this "breach" would have affected me, as my profile is already public. I also have a ham license, and at least one domain without "privacy" service on the WHOIS data, and listed my real home address as my registered address last time I ran for office, and use my real name as my Wikipedia handle, with my birth year listed on my user page.

There's probably a way to subscribe to some of the stuff I was following on G+ by direct push, or on FB. I have other contacts who had been active on G+ in the past but have already gone dark there, I haven't figured out where they moved to (if anywhere) yet.

Tesla model 3 battery pack is 475 Kg for 75 kWh. Works out to 5700 kg. So we are already 1350 kg over the limit, and we have not added the motor yet. So what to do?

Tesla pack has active cooling and is designed for automotive use and it has some heavy shielding for road hazards etc. We should be able to save 20% on cooling. At altitude there is unlimited supply of very cold air, which can be used for cooling the battery pack. And during charging on ground, we would design a charging/cooling connections to blast it with refrigerated air and charge. We are at 4560 kg under this assumption.

Design the structure and the cell for aero application we can probably save another 10%. We are within ball park now 4100Kg. We have about 200 kg for two 260 kW motor. Not possible, but not totally out either.

Ok, I forgot about this, but it is an option that is shown if you click "choose what to share..." on new installations. There is an option with right click -> allow download that works when this happens.

Something that the other replies to your post haven't mentioned is that parachutes are damned hard to control, while a propulsive landing has very good control authority. You can't land the rocket upright when it's floating around like a feather. Have you ever watched a feather drop? It's only good at all for a water landing, and those are right out because sea water is bad for a re-usable spacecraft.

* Reserve fuel is cheap (compared to the cost of the rocket it's spare change), and it needs to have some anyhow
* The empty rocket is very light (even one engine can't throttle down enough to maintain a hover)
* Parachutes are extra weight that isn't needed except when landing. And they're a lot of extra weight. Also, there has been a limit to man-rated space landing parachutes in that only one company has been making all of them since the 1960s. Crew Dragon will be the first to use a new manufacturer, and there is some concern about their process simply because they're new at it.
* It's not a man rated landing, so the objective isn't to keep humans alive, it's to keep the rocket from breaking
* And as someone else mentioned, the parachute would put different loads on the frame than during launch, so the whole can would have to be stronger and thus heavier. I'm sure you've crushed a few aluminum soda cans. It's the same thing scaled up, except it's more like a 50cm+ tall soda can, with rocks in the bottom.

I think the thing that bugs me most is that years after they quickly decided that parachutes were a really dumb idea, we still have naive people suggesting the "obvious" idea that they should use parachutes, as though nobody else was smart enough to consider it. It's not like you can't google for "why doesn't spacex use parachutes" and get a bunch of good answers.

There is an important historical aspect to what is happening which makes sense of it all: The gravitational universe idea is a legacy concept - akin to vigorously asserting the importance of MS-DOS in 2018. The idea comes from a time when people burned whale oil in gas lamps to read at night - (1) when the Milky Way was thought to be all there was; (2) when that single galaxy was assumed to be just a pile of stars; (3) when all we could see was disconnected points of light; (4) when astronomers did not even realize that radio waves come from space; and (5) when it was assumed that the space between stars was mostly empty. Think about the collective implication of each of these assumptions: (2) through (5) all leave the impression that gravity must dominate at the largest scales. Today we know better about (2) through (5), but few are actually thinking through the implications of the historical changes.

Today, we understand that (1) the Milky Way is one of many galaxies; (2) we now realize that galaxies can be incredibly dynamic objects; (3) we can now see the connections between those points of light; (4) we now understand that optical is just a small sliver of the universe's total emissions; and (5) we today understand that not only is there significant matter between stars, but it is additionally conductive. These were all surprises, and aside from (1), they point to electricity - yet the gravitational ideas which came from that former time continue to dominate.

Consider the rapid pace at which things change in the Node.js community. If you don't pay attention for just a few months, you could find yourself having to repeatedly interject, "what's that?" Astrophysics is the exact opposite of this. There is no real innovation happening, no actual theorizing going on:

It's happening. Look at this graph. Growth was exponential from 2010 to 2017, taking it from 0.1% to 16%. The last two years have been mostly linear, from 16% to 26% (~5%/year). The last 8 weeks alone have seen a 1.5% increase; that's equivalent to all the growth from 2010 to July 2013! 3.5 years compared to 8 weeks for the same improvement. We're well into the implementation phase now, with over 1 in 4 users using Google services over IPv6; the actual number is even higher, because Google underestimates it by requiring IPv6 to be explicitly whitelisted by them. It is taking time, no doubt about that, but it is happening at a decent clip now, and the pressure to provide it will increase. Already most of my internet traffic is over v6, and it's also more reliable. We're not far off the tipping point where it will start to be required.

For countries where the university are actually budgeted by the government inscription is still cheap. Last I looked (last year) to enter my study mater - fundemental physics - untila master degreee was less than 500 euro per year. There is no lodging naturally for that price. But last I studied there I paid that for the FULL year. Over 5 years (D.E.A. level - to make a PHD afterward - probably replaced by 4 years master nowadays) that would be 2.4K to 3K cost. When I read 60K cost I think people are either taking a private school, or add housing , or are getting fleeced. Or all 3.

Moore's paper is freely available. He didn't state "Moore's law" of course, but he does talk about economic factors. The graph that's usually taken to be the statement of Moore's law (at least, Wikipedia thinks so) simply shows year versus number of components per integrated function.

So there's no reason bigger dies wouldn't count, although they shouldn't be any more expensive than the older, smaller ones were.
