Re:I'm pissed
Is there a failed MMO graveyard? Like a wiki where we could post MMOs that have died and analysis of what went wrong?
One way you can get to seeing a graveyard of failed MMOs is reading up on Woody's Zapper comics at GU Comics. I just emailed him about this one, so you'll probably see MxO heading for the zapper in a day or two.

Re:Home is Stupid
I don't have to join some idiotic twelve-year-old-girl's fantasy three-dimensional The Sims world to jump into a game of CounterStrike or Civilization IV on my PC. Why do I have to do that on my consoles?
Because games are for pedos, of course. -

Sony vs eBay: Already in comic formHowever, one has to consider court costs. Dinky MMOG Designer #32 won't likely be able to much. Imagine how much money eBay's legal department would waste if Sony's horde of lawyers were to raise the banner and go to war. There was a series of comics about this quite some time ago over on GU Comics back in 2001. They are:
Verant vs. eBay and
Verant vs. eBay vs. Sony.
(for those who don't know, Verant was the original developer house for Everquest. Sony owned it (at least most of it, I'm not 100% clear on this), and has since taken over the title entirely under their Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) division) -

2 Months? Try like about a year, when I read about it. It was going to be December 2005, not 2006.

GU
Today's GU deals with the same topic. I don't play the game myself, but these game companies need to start getting their acts together, this is getting too common in the industry, that is to release a game way before it (or in this case the company) is ready to do so.

W-H-O-R-E
Okay fanboys, repeat after me:
"Nintendo is the most original and innovative game developer there is!"
Seriously, I look at this as a corrolary to the article posted yesterday. And I think Woody says it best: this is nothing but shameless franchise whoring. This isn't the sort of thing that's going to get Gamecube sales up. -

Re:Middle Aged Gamers and the New Generation> They are running into the frustration of not being able to game any more because they can't blow 40 hours a week on a game. This problem is no more evident then in MMORPGs.
Preach, brother. The other thing is that the time sinks in MMORPGs are about as specfuckingtacularly un-fun as it's possible for something to be.
> So perhaps it takes a little work to be a Jedi Knight,
And while we're at it - talk about a time sink.
For those that didn't try SWG, you had to master 25-32 out of 32 professions. Several of these professions were crafting professions. You were supposed to (I'm not making this up!) craft items by clicking on the same screen locations repeatedly, pause for a second, hit ENTER, pause for a second, hit ENTER again, and start clicking again. No macro system in-game for this. Using third-party automation tools was deemed a violation of the EULA. No skill, no puzzles to solve, no gameplay process of "building" things a'la Tetris, just "Click the box. Click the box. Click the box until you've made forty thousand items, about 200,000 mouse clicks, or 30-40 hours of pure carpal-tunnel-inducing boredom. (Or fuck the EULA, intstall a third-party macro program, and let your computer "play" for two or three days straight). When you'd mastered your profession, you dropped it and went on to the next one. Some of the professions were faster than others, requiring only 10-20000 items.
If you imagine manually renaming, from within a GUI filemanager (i.e. no scripting!), 100,000 "h0tgr1tz12345.jpeg" files to "h0tgr1tz12345.jpg", you've got the right idea.
All told, to become a Jedi required about a 100-150 hours of this dreck. Plus another 100-200 hours of similar mindless auto-attacking mobs, which wasn't quite as easily accelerated, and at least you could choose to take over from the computer and play an unbalanced shooting game in god-mode for a couple of hours a day.)
(+1, Funny): Someone actually expected players to pay $15/month for this.
(-1, Sad): They found 100,000-200,000 people dumb enough to take them up on that offer.Star Wars Galaxies: The perfect wage slavery game. (Oh, wait, I just RTFA. It's about designing games for wage slaves, not designing games about roleplaying what it's like to be a wage slave. Nevermind.)

Re:Not being an Everquest playerThis is the straw that broke the camel's back. If you're played EQ for any amount of time, chances are you've read Woody's comics.
Things that led to this:- SOE upgraded the graphics engine to use DirectX 9, causing much headache for under par machines (which were running fine before).
- Within a short period, they released many expansions. The latest, Gates of Discord, being totally aimed at uber high end raiders, and was not labeled as such.
- Said latest expansion was so difficult, if you weren't playing the "core" classes, you're SOL. Also, it appeared much of the content was buggy.
- In the midst of Dx9 issues and fixing bugs with the latest expansion, SOE announces yet another expansion.
Interestingly enough, during this time they've reduced prices on expansions and have several bargains on year long subscriptions. My theory is SOE is painfully aware of the MMORPG competition and is using a shotgun approach to hang onto the market. That would explain bringing the game up to speed to today's graphics and releasing expansions rapid fire, while at the same time dropping prices. - SOE upgraded the graphics engine to use DirectX 9, causing much headache for under par machines (which were running fine before).

Re:Not being an Everquest player
There are tons of problems with existing content, and people got pissed of off the fact that Sony would rather release more pay-to-get content instead of putting resources into fixing the existing content.
Also, people weren't too happy to hear they announced the new expansion before they even had finalized its features. This GU comic summarizes the hassle nicely.
