Trading Forums
I usually buy most of my parts from Trading Forums, such as Anandtech.com or Hardforum.com.
The prices offered are almost always below what a store offers. Plus, if you decide to go with people selling used instead of new (both are available), you can get it at only a fraction of the cost.
I've been dealing with people from those forums for a couple years now, and they've saved me hundreds of dollars.
Security is the only real issue, since people can rip each other off... but as long as you trade with people that have a good (high) reputation, then you're normally safe. Moreover, a lot of products are sold with transferable manufacturers warranties on them, so you can buy safely, knowing that you're covered for a bit. I have yet to be ripped off after quite a number of full computer builds.

Re:In a word...
Actually, if you've bought an OEM copy of Windows and installed it on an existing computer or a VM, then you've probably violated the EULA and should have paid 3x over the odds for a "full retail" copy. No incentive to cheat the system?
OEM Windows is only supposed to be sold as a bundle with a new PC (in the UK* resellers often insist that you buy at least a hard drive or a motherboard before they'll sell you an OEM copy), you are obliged to install it on that hardware, to which you must attach the license sticker, and cannot transfer the license to another machine.
I think the only part of the above that's true is the non-transferable limitation of OEM Windows. A seller can sell OEM Windows without "a new PC" and not violate the seller's EULA. A buyer can buy and install OEM Windows on non-bundled hardware without attaching the license sticker.
- Ars Technica - Buying OEM versions of Windows Vista: the facts
- [H]ard|OCP - Microsoft OEM Licensing FAQ
From Microsoft's OEM Builder FAQs:
- Q. The current System Builder license states that I may distribute an operating system license with a "non-peripheral hardware component". What hardware components are considered "non-peripheral"?
A. A non-peripheral hardware component is a hardware component that is considered to be essential to running a computer system, and includes components such as memory, internal devices and drives, mice, keyboards, and power supplies. Examples of components that are not considered essential are external modems, networking devices, cameras, printers, and scanners.
So Microsoft says sellers can bundle a $2 mouse with OEM Windows and be compliant with the seller's EULA. If you shop around, you'll find online stores that bundle a $1 audio cable with a $1 "instant rebate." As for the buyer's EULA, quoted from the Ars Technica article:
- Can I buy OEM?
Yes, you can. Microsoft licenses OEM software to "system builders," which the license defines as "an original equipment manufacturer, or an assembler, reassembler, or installer of software on computer systems" (emphasis added). You can install software on computers, right?
When asked, Microsoft says that OEM software is not intended to be installed by end users. Off the record, Microsoft spokespeople have told me that the big concern in Redmond is for Joe Newbie. They don't want inexperienced users buying OEM software, but the fact of the matter is that anyone can buy OEM versions of Windows.
Truth be told, Microsoft is not opposed to the practice. Rather, the company says that people who purchase OEM software will simply be expected to abide by the terms of the licensing agreements.
Also, the definition of a "new computer" (regarding the "non-tranferable" OEM limitation) seems to be "new motherboard," but replacing a "defective motherboard" is okay. From Microsoft:
- Q. Can a PC with OEM Windows XP have its motherboard upgraded and keep the same license? What if it was replaced because it was defective?
A. Generally, you may upgrade or replace all of the hardware components on your customer's computer and the end user may maintain the license for the original Microsoft® OEM operating system software, with the exception of an upgrade or replacement of the motherboard. An upgrade of the motherboard is considered to result in a "new personal computer" to which Microsoft® OEM operating system software cannot be transferred from another computer. If the motherboard is upgraded or replaced for reasons other than a defect, then a new computer has been created and the license of new operating system software is required. If the motherboard is replaced because it is defective, you do NOT need to acquire a new operating system license for the PC.

Great idea... but not without drawbacks
TANSTAAFL. It's ironic that people running, e.g. ClimatePrediction are simultaneously helping to change the climate. Each PC does not generate much heat, but several million of them certainly do - especially if left on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week as many enthusiasts tend to. See for example this rough analysis: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1240015
We have to figure both the heat generated and the power consumed (much of which is derived from fossil fuels). Even if you use green electricity, that just means that other people have to use fossil fuels. Good for your conscience, but not for the world as a whole.
On the other hand, as several people have pointed out, the waste heat from PCs does contribute to space heating - thus perhaps reducing the amount of energy spent to keep houses, etc. warm in winter. -
Re:I use Vista daily.
There's actually a 4GB limit that 32-bit versions of Windows can address. Your system BIOS, video card, and other devices use up this limit first, and then the rest of your physical RAM is mapped for use. I'm running a Geforce 8800GTS 320MB video card, if you have a 768MB or 640MB card, then you'll have less ram showing in Windows.
More information can be found here. -
Re:Good marketing?
And I got the impression that most people doing overclocking aren't clocking lowend parts to typical speeds for cash savings, they're the ones going for bragging rights and 3dmark points, which means clocks to the max. Reminds me a lot of the people who spend 80% of their time pimping out their ride and 20% driving it.
I think your impression is quite the opposite of reality. Sure, there are some folks as you describe, but they are the vocal minority. Even when you look at the results of those enthusiasts you still see quite a lot of them using air cooling on the lower end chips. There are plenty of people performing modest overclocks on air cooling to get better bang for their buck. (And the biggest surge in overclcocking I recall were all the people running their 350Mhz celerons at 500Mhz... because the celerons were cheap.) Nowadays people are even using the very modest (+5%) dynamic overclocking which is built-in to some motherboards. -
Re:Let me debunk a few things
6. Costs more than a DS
30$. For which you get a considerably more powerful CPU & 3D accelerator. Look at screenshots from DS and PSP games.
Origianally the PSP was 250 where the DS was 150. When both units had lowered their prices, it was $130 to $200, but to make the price drop on the PSP, several items had been removed from the packaging. With the PSP's latest price drop, it's still $130 for a DS, and 170 for a PSP, plus the cost of a memory card. The original DS pricing is still cheaper than than the current PSP.
Frankly, there's no way you can win an argument on cost. The DS is much more bang for your buck (unless you're only looking at playing UMD movies, in which case, go with a portable dvd player). -

Re:PS3 Kicking Ass On All Fronts
Rock solid defect free hardware - compared to the nightmare failure rate Microsoft still has going on with the 360.Really? I've seen a pair of them at a UPS Store being shipped back to Sony. I've also read reports from people back in December being told not to expect replacements for two months. Of course, I would assume that this estimate has since been revised, what with supply and all...
Absolutely silent operation - bravo Sony engineering!
Ah, yes...Sony engineering, which also gave us the Square button on the PSP and told us that we were wrong for not liking it. Also, the analog nub on the PSP freaking sucks. I'm glad there's only one, because the one that's there isn't very sensitive at all. You try making a circular motion with it sometime - it doesn't work. There are two speeds possible with it (all the way out and part of the way out), and the angular refinement is pretty shoddy. It's very hard to go from, for example, W to WNW to NW. You'll generally skip straight over WNW. Ever try web-browsing on the thing?
BluRay has won the format war with only a couple months after the PS3 release BluRay already outselling the dying HD-DVD format 3-1. And one of the remaining HD-DVD studios just jumped ship to BluRay today. Pretty much all that remains is for Universal to throw in the towel.
Nice for you not to provide a link here where you did everywhere else. Also, describing this as a format war is like calling the Falkland Islands War a war. The remaining 99.99% of the world didn't even notice it was happening. Also, Sony dumping its crappy back-catalog of movies into Blu-Ray, causing a large chunk of new titles to be made available, is not what I call winning - it's what I call "stacking the deck". Despite it's apparent capacity advantage, Blu-Ray is getting lower marks in the picture quality department, which, if you weren't keeping track, is kind of important to the people willing to drop $2000+ on a TV and $500+ on a high-def DVD player.
PS3 has the top selling game in Japan now - Japan will be a fierce battle between Sony and Nintendo. Nintendo really needs to work on their release schedule. Wii owners are getting restless as the novelty of games like Wii Sports is wearing off.
"Top-selling" is hardly the way to put it. With over double the install base of the 360, it hasn't managed to come close to outselling Blue Dragon. Watch next week, as Virtua Fighter 5 drops back to the mid-20's, while Wii Sports and Wii Play continues to sell the same amount each week (which proves that the novelty isn't exactly wearing off).
Early previews are going gaga over Motorstorm with another online win for Sony with another completely lagfree game.
http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1103341 [hardforum.com]
No...RECENT previews are saying "Hey, this doesn't suck anymore". Early previews said it was complete and utter shit. Oh, and hey - that's the one the Japanese got! I'm sure they love the PS3!
The Playstation Network is cranking out all sorts of very cool indy games like Flow and GripShift and we are only a couple months into adding content.
No...the PlayStation Network is releasing a port of a Flash game that's been out for over a year, and another not-so-great Sony-first-party junker. Oh yeah - and the rubber ducky game.
The one issue with HD tvs and PS2/PS1 games has been fixed and PS3 owners have rock solid 99 percent backwards compatibility with the giant library of PS2 and PS1 games.
It's not 99%. Closer to 90%. Music games are still broken. Also, the "one issue" is actually two issues, one of which has been fixed. Ask a 720p-set owner if they're happy that they can't play in 1080i anymore.
Virtua Fighter just about to hit the shelves.
It did hit the shelves in Japan. It landed with a thud. See above.
GDC sounds like Sony is going to have some pretty big announcements with even more -

Dell Censored Customers With Monitor Problems Also
I bought a new Dell 20" monitor in November. After delivery I thought it looked bad for such a well reviewed model. I found out Dell had swapped the well regarded Phillips S-IPS type panel for a lesser Samsung S-PVA type panel. People who found out about this switch and went to the Dell forum to ask questions were censored out. A thread about this problem was started in a hardware forum and it now has 790 posts and 55,000 views: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1111100 I returned my monitor in early Dec. I still can't get my money back from Dell though even though they don't dispute the credit even they say they owe me. Between the service rep on the phone and accounting there is some disconnect. Fair to say that after weeks of talking to Dell serivce and 2 dozen "case numbers" I think things are a real mess over there.

Re:Using Vista for a bit
> Exactly how is it less usable then XP. They pretty much both work.
I think the first post on this page (check out the images) summarize it pretty succinctly:
"Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder and video card. Try installing an updated driver for your video card."
-
Regarding the Muslix64 exploit...
I think I have found something that has been somewhat overlooked. I found a thread on AVS forum (which has now been removed, imagine that (and EVEN REMOVED FROM GOOGLE'S CACHE!!!)) which stated that on "The Hulk" HD DVD, or at least some of them, there is a text file, in the clear, on the root of the disk that contains the title and volume keys in the clear. User "Borbus" there even posted part of this file.
Also, in THIS thread at hardforums, on page 3, user "w1retap" states that:
"bwhahaha.. found encryption keys, volume keys, and the MCM managed copy V-ISAN ID. Now I'm just working on hashing the whole HD-DVD.. its taking a while.. lol. After that, I'll try the ripping program for playback off the hard drive. Then, if that works, its off to HDbits."
He also provides a SCREENSHOT which show that there is, in fact a text file there.
After this, the hardforums were down for a full day, and in "w1retap"'s next posts, he states:
"1) I'm not going to speak of title keys on a public forum."
Now I do not have an X-Box HD DVD drive to test, but I bet if someone did, and had "The Hulk" HD DVD that they would find in that text file the very key needed to decrypt that disk. And with that test could verify if the Muslix64 program DOES work. And, if it does, knowing a valid key would make it MUCH easier to find that key in the memory of PowerDVD or WinDVD. I SURE WISH someone out there would test this, all of the evidence is there, even some evidence of a cover-up. The post with the key from avsforum was available yesterday, now it is NOT there or even in Google's cache, as I have said.... -

Re:"work"
I find your arguments to be quite funny. Spending $500 every 6 months on the newest graphics card has nothing to do with how expensive Macs are. The point is, these same people will still spend $500 every 6 months for the newest graphics card even if they somehow converted to Macs. At least when they buy their PCs instead of Macs, they wouldn't need to spend the extra $1000 on components they don't need or will throw out of the Macs as soon as possible (since Apple doesn't exactly offer top-of-the-line components -- the best video card available at the Apple store is a 7800 GT, not even a GTX/7900/SLI/512MB, and that's for the Power Mac G5, not the Intel Macs). And when you consider people like these: http://www.hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=102903682
7 &postcount=651, I doubt the entire aesthetics argument will fall on sound ears.
The only (I think) exception to my arguments are the ones who go out (or stay in, if you will) and buy things like fully decked-out Alienware or Falcon Northwest. If they complain about the price of Apple computers, then they need to be slapped (if they complain about the availability of top-end hardware, then that's different). However, I think the ones that really complain are the DIY crowd who tend to assemble their own computers. $1000 is still two upgrades worth of really good video cards (or one upgrade for SLI freaks). -
Re:Grass root? Mainstream?
right now, i agree with you 100%, 10g is hardly needed anyhwere. but to address your orignal post, its that future thing that has me wondering. doubling up or tripling up on gigabit is currently standard practice for data intensive systems-- not just big iron, but rouge hackers cobbling together powerful clusters and grids for fun or profit. and it makes sense, its so damned cheap why not? besides, who can afford 10g? but with the throughput wars, how long can this really last? this is grassroots. this is mainstream, within the domain of computing hardware systems. for the actual computer industry, 1g is woefully insufficient.
grass-roots is people using drbd network replication with Xen to support live virtual host migration. if a filesystem fails, just migrate the hosts on that filesystem over to the host on the network backup and run them there. This sort of advanced system shuffling used to be the domain of blade systems and IBM, but now that bandwidth is becoming commodified and abundant we can start doing these things grassroots. Even now, some casual idiot can throw twenty one hard drives into a case for a couple terabytes of online storage. Soon with SAS (good overview), custom build storage will become only more of a reality.
Actually, SAS expanders use 4g infiniband interconnect. Maybe we just need cheaper infiniband. 4G is "nearly" enough.
So, currently storage solutions and blade systems are proprietary and expensive. With 10g and rapidly accelerating high availability and distributed systems, the linux kiddies are building it themselves.
this being said, i do wish to emphasize once more that I do really agree with you. there wasnt a single thing i didnt say yes yes and nod my head to in the parent. -

Did I mention they missed the boat by not including an LED light on the internals? The case mod dudes almost always do stuff like that! They're going to be pissed that the option isn't offered, so they'll have to dismantle the drive to mod it anyway!!
I've actually seen the HL2 casemod before... it pales ( IMHO ) in comparison to the Doom 3 case mod. That guy is in a pretty special class of his own due to his expertise with plastics molding and airbrushing. He's something of a pro, it seems... but, yea, some of these dudes are unbelievably serious, as are some of the dudes in the Honda Civic riceburner moding community... some of them build really nice, fancy Hondas with real race engines, like some guys build really nice gaming machines that look like a scene out of Doom 3. But there are also the guys who modify cases for machines that need better graphic cards and motherboards, or who screw up their cooling for some cool lighting, just as there are guys who spend money first on spinny hubcaps and mufflers withou improving the engine. Both communities are large, and have small industrial empires serving their desires. I picked the two to compare quite deliberately...
Frankly, I'm a bit puzzled that larger companies have so far left the gamer/mod community almost entirely to companies like AlienWare and such. It has to be a pretty big market, judging from all the case mod-community web sites...

Synthetic
I prefer the use of actual games when benchmarking a card. The synthetic benchmarks from 3dMark do not tell me anything other than how the card will perform in 3Dmark. With various game engines using a wide range of features such as OpenGL, DirectX, SM3.0, HDR, etc. you need to benchmark by using a wide range of "actual" games.

I wanted to chime in here. My friend and I put together HIS Zalman Reserator (not mine -- got no extra money for these things) and Antec Aria SFF PC a few weeks ago with tremendous results. The Zalman Reserator retails for $250 at Frys. Most online vendors charge more for it.
It's basically a 2.5' tall heatsink/radiator with a submerged pump. It includes a waterblock for your processor (Intel and AMD) and all the tubing/hardware you need.
You lose the ability to easily bleed the thing, although clamping off hoses and pouring nearly 3 liters of water out the top of a Reserator doesn't really seem all that troublesome to me.
Bottom line -- he dropped his idle temps by 20C and his load temps by a similar amount. This was a few weeks ago when it was slightly warmer here in Georgia. He now idles (running a P4 Prescott) at about 27C. It's pretty amazing.

Re: Just cheap way to get his stuff tested
If the Dag33k guy (mentioned in above posts) is really the same guy from the 'showcase'-video.
Then you should really check his previous posts on that forum.
Sure 's a cheap to test his company's video servers... Getting it slashdotted.

Recomend an independent testing company
Aloha-
I have been given the task to find an independent testing company to test the throughput of my company's video servers and I need your help. Can anyone recomend such a company? Experience with the particular company is a plus. What we are looking for is a messure of simultaneous users (max) and total throughput on the server.

Re:Scam alert
Another posting pointed to this discussion where "dag33k" is practically wetting himself over three screenshots.
A quick nose at the screenshots reveals that the (now dead) screenshots are hosted at: http://www.cotse.net/users/secnet/.
So that's secnet. Not that you can see too much: "their" bandwidth's been exceeded. Doesn't sound like a particularly particularly good choice for a testimonial.
I agree with you. I smell a rat.
