Similar protection on Madden 2005
I had a similar experience with Madden 2005, and posted about it here: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=809182&
p age=1&pp=30
The too long/didn't read version is that for Madden, at least, you don't have to uninstall Alcohol 120%, just set virtual drives to zero. I still find this an obnoxious and intrusive invasion on how I want to use my computer to play for a game I purchased legally. As I said in my parent post in that thread: I'm all in favor of 'normal' cd-checks, but this goes a step further. It only infringes upon the rights of legitimate users, not those who pirate. -
Re:I like [H]ard OCP
No doubt. [H] did a little review of one of those USB drives last week though. I've always found that their forums are really good to get answers and discuss things. When they're up.

Re:No minimum framerates?
read the related thread in the video card forum hardforum. Kyle is currently testing many video cards and had just finished the testing on 2 complete systems. It takes time to run all the benchmarks. Be patient.

Re:Awesome!Ok site seems to be dead. Here's what it said:
Doom 3 fast approaches, and the newest edition of PC Gamer has the "world exclusive" review. How did it score? It scored a 94%. Check out its highs, lows and bottom line:
Highs: Extraordinary graphics and sound; incredible tension, atmosphere, and mayhem.
Lows: Some stabs at humor fall a bit flat.
Bottom Line: Just as we'd hoped, it's a non-stop ride of tension, carnage and terror. A new classic.
Here's the cover.
Check out this HardForum Thread for more information.
UPDATE: Here's some more info I've found over at NVNews:The game will apparantly have a DVD version. There are multiple covers for the PC Gamer mag and the game boxes are different than the pre-order boxes.

Re:I don't think the article is *that* good for FF
Seems there's a little astroturfing campaign going on. See here for instance. Again with the plugins bashing.

I mean, Hot !
Will it come with the Prescott Survival kit ? -
Re:It's called BTX.
You're kidding, right?
All BTX does is cooling the CPU first, then letting the warmed up air circulate over the other components inside the case, shortening their lifespan.
Here's an interesting thread: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadi d=747340. -
More linksI'm currently hosting the docket documents as they come in. I've seen several other people point to them so here's a quick update. (Shacknews must have gotten their info from my posts at Hardforum which where in turn picked up by Gamespot.) This is information that Gamespot hasn't been reported yet or Shacknews.
A latest check of the docket shows that the Infinium Labs lawyers forgot to file a Certificate of Interested Persons with the court. It's just a list of people who a financial stake in the outcome of the case. When it is filed on Infinium's part, it could provide a look at the backers of Infinium and who else is financially involved with the company.
In other news, the court ordered a mediation meeting as part of the process to get the two sides to settle. This has to happen by April 23rd. It's intended to be a face-to-face meeting with all parties, but I expect Infinium to go pro se and do a telephone conference. If a settlement can't be reached, then both sides will file a report to the court explaining why.
Until the Certificate of Interested Persons is filed, the case won't progress much until the middle of next month. I've got the docs, but haven't uploaded them my site yet being as they are from the court and none of the parties. If there's a lot of interest, I'll post 'em.
Infinium Labs has retained the following legal council in Texas. This is public information from the court docket.

This just in: Slashdot getting slow!
I read this yesterday morning when someone posted it on HardOCP's forums. Is Slashdot losing their touch?

driver cracks and upgrades
For those Windows / dual boot users looking a little on the lower end of the performance and price curve, I just found this hacked driver page and this thread that basically turns certain Radeon 9500 cards (~$135) into 9700s (~$200) by unlocking 4 pixel pipelines on the chip. It doesn't work on all cards, producing visual artifacts on some (some workarounds exist for some users) but given the right hardware, you might pull a good deal of performance out of a mid-priced piece of hardware.

Brand Loyalty Considered Harmful
Yeah. Just today I saw a post by a web-designer, explaining how he/she had never used Mozilla.
Sad, sad, sad.
(as if the original topic wasn't sad enough)

ATI vs. NVIDIA
I'm a happy owner of a 9700 pro. I'm sure future buyers will be happy with the NV30.
Despite all the puffery of the PR, they only claim about 40% increase over the 9700. 46 measly frames in Doom III with all the goods!!! Neither of these cards will run the Doom demo well! Hardly worthy of the claim creating a "new era of cinematic graphics". ATI started the new era, and NVIDIA is now matching ATI's offering with a slight increase in performance. Good job to both camps. We will all enjoy the benefits.
Future NVIDIA purchasers will have ATI to thank for the NV30's clockspeed and required hoover for cooling. There is little doubt that if it were not for the 9700 NV30 would be delivered later or clocked lower. I think ATI really surprised NVIDIA. We shall see who has the next surprise.
I think the big lie is that cinematic effects only begin with their deeper 2.0+ shaders. If you look at the DX9 demos from ATI, you can see the stock 2.0 pixel and vertex shaders offer plenty of opportunity for cinematic effects.
The hoopla helps deflects attention away from NV30's lower bandwidth and poorer clockspeed-t/performace ratio compared to the 9700. I suspect the deeper shaders will not perform well for gaming and will only be used in near-real-time applications.
Both will be decent cards that adequately handle requirements (DX9) that may only start to matter for mainstream games by the time we're debating NV40 vs. R400. -
Re:A few things....
My thoughts exactley, Arby is very well known and respected on Hardforums and MP3Car fourms.
An ubergeek if there is one. Not like some of the slackers here who don't do windows icase it will weaken their contribution to the gene pool.
have they ever thought, as the system he has built is totally standard X86 hardware, that generation one uses Windows because it may have probs, but works out of the box. generation two might just have custom software to do the Job. But I'm sure he won't use linux. If he is going to do wireless, he better base it on OpenBSD to be on the safe side.
Windows has it's uses. and this case it is quick and dirty, functional, and a proof of concept, and it actually works.
While they are still trying to pull the last few bugs out of their wonderful curses front end, before starting to code the PostgreSQL based data and file storage system, Arby is cruising with the tunes playing. I have a project in the pipeline. It may be windows, it may not. I don't know yet. GPSDrive looks cool, and is free, but so is GPSS, and both do voice directions, so who knows. -
Bad BuyBest Buy advertising then refusing to sell the GF4 at the low price is actually quite old news. The arrest of the Indian American is actually new. We know Best Buy should honour the low price, but as any company would, they tried to get out of it. Steve @ Hypothermia (and HardOCP) has done alot of work, and indirectly (&directly) got many people their GF4's at the low price, Good Job!
If what has been reported is true about the Indian American being arrested for trying to get his GF4 at the low price. That is a whole new story. Reading up at Hypothermia and the HardOCP Forums it seems so. After some of my experiences at Best Buy, and all this nonsense over the GF4 they are definately on My List. This story about arresting a guy over what happened is just the icing on the cake.
What exactly happened still seems a bit unclear, and we should probably what for Best Buy's response, but it really doesn't surprise me that Best Buy acted this way. Their company cultrue seems to foster turning employees into assholes. IMHO, of course.

Toolbox
Very nice but i am seriously disapointed with slashdot on this. I am a diehard case moder and i have seen thousands upon thousands of this exact same mod done in the last few years. I assumed that slashdot readers would be more aware of the mod culture and thus aware of this feature which is becomeing more and more common. Check some out here

Hope that IBM ad I'm seeing isn't why...
... this story, about the IBM 120GXP series of disks being unsuitable (according to IBMs spec) to run 24/7, was refused.
OT I know, but isn't this stuff that matters?

Cool, but...Is
/. now a case-modding forum? Iris Indigo, Cube, water-cooled notebooks, what next?Mods are cool and all, but I can get more than I care for here, among other places.

Re:Whats next... Lego?
Look at Wang191's post on this page as well as his homepage. Awesome Lego case mod !
-
Re:Ain't all that.Wtf are you talking about? Did you even go to the link and click around their are clear cases, aluminium cases, and suitcase cases all built by hand.
This page has a case made entirely out of legos.
This page has a custom plastic case porsche-like with a spoiler.
I know the difference between a modded case and a custom case. I just wish people would frigging take more than 2 seconds at a link before raving like lunatics.

Look here for some cool cases. IMHO this case in the slashdot story isn't all that.

Hard OCP
Try posting on the HardOCP cool cases forum for ideas. They do a lot of interesting case mods, maybe someone there has done something like what you want to do.

Re:Inadequate testing
Well I for one and most people I know who frequent places like HardForum the forum sister site to HardOCP use burn in programs like SiSoft Sandra's burn in program for at least 12 or so hours before we leave the overclock in place.

the Via case is a bigger deal!
the MSFT case is not a big deal. whatever happens will happen. However, the Via/Intel case is a HUGE deal. If there is validity to Via's claims, Intel is in serious trouble. HardOCP
has a thread going down in their forums commenting on what the ramifications of this are. This could be huge-keep an eye on it. Via has the potential to really smack Intel where it will hurt the most-in the courts. -
Clear Case
Just saw this custom clear case over at HardOCP. Very nice, clean work. URL is "http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?threadid
