Re:Button confusion?
...my nine button Logitech...forward/back buttons... -
How not to write irritating articles on the WebDon't spread your freakin' article over five "pages"!
The whole idea of hypertext is that you have documents brought together by links. You use links to make connections to related works on your site or others. But it is not useful to break up a single short document artificially into "pages", as if it were a print publication, and link them together.
Using "pages" decreases the chance that a person will actually read what you have to say. Worse, when your server is under load, using "pages" may decrease the chance that they are able to read it: if they load the first page and then go to get the second, it takes some time (which is, remember, money -- the reader's property, not yours!) and it may time out. Breaking the article into pages makes it less efficient for both your server and the reader.
Whenever I see an article broken into "pages" I immediately conclude that one of those shithead "Web designers" has got their filthy paws all over the site. These are drooling morons who flunked design school (or went to a design school that should itself be flunked) and know nothing about usability. They spew useless huge graphics all over and use pointless techno-cruft like Flash. (The only site that should be allowed to use Flash is Homestar Runner.) Like apes driven mad they smear feces all over what would be a perfectly good work, rendering it sickening to handle or even to be near.
There's no excuse for "Web design", and no excuse for wrecking a perfectly good article like this.

Re:The spelling! It hurts!
Okay, Benny, I'm only going to sing this one more time:
Ohhhhhhh, if you want it to be possessive, it's just "ITS."
But, if it's supposed to be a contraction then it's "I-T-apostrophe-S,"
Scalawag.

Re:Overclocking damage via software, Possible on P
For those of us who don't get the joke, this was the text of a fictional advertisement from HomestarRunner.com. It ran on Bubs' Concession Stand for Strong Bad's damaged computer after Bubs used his shotgun as an antivirus device.

This is great
This is great.
This is GREAT!
I'm serious guys, this is just so awesomely cool. I can't believe there are so many people down on this here, they're releasing a cartridge with a full music composition tool in it! Here's a sampling of comments:
"Is this Nintendo's way to prove that the DS can be more than just a video game player?"
Oy, what's with all the antagonism? Does everything have to be through the reacting-to-Sony filter? One thing about Nintendo, you can't honestly say they plan products just to react to other companies.
"I have to ask if there's going to be any practical way to get your MIDI compositions off the DS (as opposed to sharing between DS's) once they're done."
It'd be cool to get them off my DS, yes, but c'mon! Remember the many hours kids spent with Mario Paint? (Link is to a large, but familiar, Quicktime file.) Fun creation software for game systems is a huge, largely untapped, market, and one of the ways that video gaming can actually make a positive impact on this tired old world. I'd think that Slashdot's strong individualistic streak would turn people out in this game's favor.
Plus, since the DS has wireless, and the composition mode probably has multi-system playback, I figure it's only a matter of time before someone hacks together a program that intercepts the intersystem play stream and saves it in a file.
"...about half of the titles for DS right now are odd enough to make Sega shake their head."
And why do I love Sega? It ain't because of Sonic Adventure!
"It's not the first time we have seen a music composer on a PDA. No that is not a typo. The DS is a god damn PDA."
Thanks for that insightful comment. Labels are fun, kids!
ARGH! Don't you guys see how COOL this is?! Is that worth nothing? -

Lego case security issues
Mother: Dear, little Joey has swallowed the lego men who were SUPPOSED to be protecting our computer from malicious spyware! Now our computer is in danger of being INFECTED! What ever shall we do?
Father: Don't worry, cutesy buttons, we'll send a team of highly skilled lego robot probes to sift through Joey's feces in our Lego toilet. We won't let those little suckers get away so easily.
Mother: Are those robots water-proof and poop-proof?
Father: They are highly trained and heavily armored Lego dung probes. In the worst possible case, we'll have to summon the Lego Poopsmith to take care of things. In any event, we will hunt down and kill those deserting punks just as our savior Dubya did with Osama bin Lego....I mean Saddam....whoever the bad guy is according to Fox News....
Father and Mother, in unison: Oh, how we love the 11th commandment*! (kiss)
* 11th commandment == Patriot Act
Note: Cutesy buttons and Poopsmith references shamelessly taken from homestarrunner.com

Re:Wow....
Yup. This was an even bigger waste of time than the Obsidian Spur story-arc. I half expect to see some strip with some crazy Eastern European guy saying, "It Cthulhu...iz funny, no?"
For something holiday related, that actually has a semblance of funny involved, watch this instead. -
Re:Friday the 13th, part xxxxx
On the bright side, this does solve the 2038 rollover of the 32-bit time_t.
Sort of in the same way a shotgun solves the problem of having too many viruses on your computer. -
Re:Other *Real* Mecha/Teleop links
A full-body haptic cockpit would be something like a sphere 8' in diameter, implying a mecha 30 foot tall!
This video shows a design that would reduce that 30 feet to about 10. -

Re:Out of curiousity, How many people had a popupb
Just Firefox alone and nothing else has blocked out all my bad popups, at the same time intuitively knowing which pop-ups to allow. Other people's mileage may vary depending on the sites they go to I guess.
The only exception was what must have been a slick piece of programming by the Chapman Bros. I don't get it; the biggest Internet advertising companies can't find a way past Firefox's built in blocker, yet some people who run a web cartoon figured it out? I must be missing something...
Now, if you're talking about IE... yeah a couple (million) popups make it here and there, even after installing SP2. I like Firefox much, much more than IE. The popup blocking, the add ins, the options menu, the way it doesn't pretend to be loading a page when it's not, the fact that it holds toolbar buttons, the web address bar, and a search bar all on the same row, and anything else I forgot about. Sometimes, just seeing that big blue E pisses me off for some reason. (Keep in mind that I use quite a few Microsoft products... well, Windows and MSN anyway.)
And about college freshies with no tech skills... they will remind you why Microsoft is doing so well and why spyware companies can convince millions of people to actually want to download their product for some emoticon toolbar, or because they saw a popup that said "Your computer is in danger! Download this right away!!!". It makes me a bit sick thinking about it, yet they're always so good at using MSN. -
Re:Two hundred and forty seven thousand?!?!
Very nice StrongBad reference. I see a strongba in there, but it's getting eaten by some linux or something. By the way, it's 423,827 viruses.

For those of you who don't like flash
Go here, watch the videos and the emails, and come back to slashdot
Flash does have its uses... -
Re:flash is evil!!
All in all I agree with your assessment that Flash is evil, but I can think of one website right off the top of my head that got it right:
homestarrunner.com
For almost everything you can click on is a real link to a real html file with the flash embedded in it. In other words, you can bookmark whatever page you're on because each new "page" is really a new HTML file. It seems like the best of both worlds. -
Learn Them Some Grammar
It sounds like there are a lot of people who could use some lessons from Strong Bad's Rhythm and Grammar. Though there's a helpful song near the beginning, wait until the end and click on the arm then the CD a few times.

In related news...
The Compy Corporation has announced that they are restarting production of their Lappy 486 due to an unusual surge in popularity and demand.

Retro Gaming
I'm totally psyched about the potential of another Sam N Max (again..) It's only a matter of time before graphic adventures become retro enough to be cool again. You can only play so many FPS, RTS and MMORPGS. In the meantime I'll go play a little Peasant's Quest
-
Re:well as for me
I think you have a real point there. VOD (Video On Demand) is closely moving into the spotlight, too, which is probably a signal that people are moving towards more personalized entertainment rather than having a set menu, so to speak, of entertainment confectionary. (score: 5, witty)
:-) DVDs are also becoming more popular, even with things the general public don't hear much about (such as Happy Tree Friends, Strong Bad Emails, and Mega64) -

The article
The link is kind of crappy. It's sort of hype-ish without real science, which coincidentally is the name of the journal whose latest issue is mentioned in the link as containing the paper describing the breakthrough. What a sentence that was...anyways, here you go. You should be able to read it even if you aren't at a subscribing institution since it's the latest issue.
It's worth noting that UTD has only been hard at work in CNT research for a few years. I was there in 2002 when the NanoTech institute was still being built. They had a bunch of Dells sitting outside the building with no one watching...but I guess they didn't worry. I mean, who steals a Dell?
Other good links, mostly culled from the above Science article:
Baughman's summary of nanotube work
Smalley (the Nobel prize winner) and his CNT work:: He invented the HiPCO process for large-scale development of CNT's...from what I gather, fiber-spinning like the UTD method is a direct competitor.
A really good (and 46 page!) discussion of nanotube work
Strong Bad, in case you get tired of science. -

All 100 emails?

'All' 100 emails? This week saw the release of email 118.

Homestar's Strongbad e-mail
Today's strongbad e-mail mentions Linux, although briefly, not flatteringly, nor in correct context. I would say it is the funniest one ever. Here is a direct link.

Borken Linke
Ah, crap. I meant departed Compy 386, not a link to a nonexistent Slashdot page...
Anyway, if you want to get a sense of the site, check out "The Interview" on the "Shorts" page, perhaps the best gateway 'toon on the site. -
