More GeForce 7900 and 7600 Details here -
NVIDIA has launched the latest refresh of their GeForce 7 series of 3D Graphics for the desktop today and took the wraps off their new GeForce 7900GTX, GeForce 7900GT and GeForce 7600GT cards. There's a full review and showcase at HotHardware, along with benchmarks that show these new 90nm built GPUs have very strong performance with lower power and even better price points. In fact the GeForce 7900 series will cost much less than NVIDIA's former high-end the GeForce 7800 series. The GeForce 7900GT in particular offers $500 graphics card level performance, reportedly at a much more palatable $299 price point.

Class action law suite?
When do we see the first one for false advertising?
According to HotHardware ATI 9700 Pro was suppoused to support HDCP. And now we learn that they don't? I don't know about you, but in Finland it is illegal to market a product with false statements.
Let the law suites begin! -

Hexus article is a mess
I think the team at Hexus need their heads examined. What a mess of an article that is, if you can even get a chance to read it with their playskool server going inaccessible. The other sites listed above have much more balanced, thorough coverage.

Length of time for equal total cost
Okay. According to this page, at full-tilt the Pentium D 820 consumes 130.6W, while this page says the Athlon 64 X2 3800+ consumes 89W. So, how long would the Opteron have to run at full blast to make up the difference in cost of $87? Last month I paid $0.078 per kilowatt-hour. This seems to be reasonably average for the United States. 130.6W - 89W = 41.6W difference between the two. Some back of the Google-calculator math reveals: (US$ 87) / (41.6 W * ((US$ 0.078) / (kW * Hr))) = 3.05871582 years. A not-insignifigant amount of time. If you're in an area where electricity is more expensive like New York or California, the amount of time is even less!
Feel free to correct my math! -
Thinkpads have had this for years...Ever since the T20 most thinkpads have had carbon fiber re-inforced lids and the T43/X41s have completely carbon re-inforced bodies.
Drop a Thinkpad and a VAIO and I know which one my money is on...
This is yet another story in the past year that makes me wonder if Slashdot really has just become an advertising venue, willingly, or through negligence.
-
This card is DOA; Electricity isn't free.
This thing uses twice as much power as a 7800gtx/6800ultra.
How bad is that? It can be quantified: A 6800gt, lower clocked & only 12 pipelines, sucks down 38 watts at idle: http://www.silentpcreview.com/article265-page4.htm l
38 watts doing nothing!
Accounting for more pipelines & higher core & memory clocks, the 6800ultra sucks down around 50 watts at idle. The 7800gtx & x850xt burn roughly the same: http://anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2496&p=1 0
And here: http://www.hothardware.com/viewarticle.cfm?article id=734
we see the x1800xt burns 50 watts more than the x850. Ergo, this sucker burns around 100 Watts just sitting there.
Going by the anand results, the 7800gt uses 27 Watts less than an ultra, which would means it uses less than the 6800gt, 50-27=23 watts at idle. We have a winner! -
Re:Honestly...
obviously you missed the fact that when gaming at 1600x1200 and are using 4x antialiasing and 8x anisotropic filtering that the x1800xt beats the shit out of the gf7800.
if you're buying a 500 dollar card, are you seriously worried about benchmarks that are run without aa+af? this card even does HDR (hi dynamic range) plus AA, something that the gf7800 can't.
this card is way more sophisticated and highly refined that the brute force 7800. the 7800 isn't bad but that this card can do with 16 pipelines what the 7800 can't do with 24, says a lot.
and that's just raw performance with todays games. never mind the fact that the 1800xt comes with 512megs of super fast ram... ready for well into the next generation of games, whereas 256meg 7800's are already obsolete for the high end of the next generation. sure 256 will be enough if you pare down the resolution and lower the texture detail. one example is the game F.E.A.R... on the 1800xt it absolutely trounces the 7800 in performance.
my advice... read ALL the reviews you can get your hands on. there are too many discrepencies if you only read one or two. if you want to get a more full picture, get to reading.

Re:What GFX cards need to have in future
If I recall correctly, 3dfx -- pre-nVidia buy-out -- had developed the hardware for anti-aliasing, over-brights, and other image processing effects in their briefly released Voodoo 5 series of graphics cards. In a http://www.hothardware.com/viewarticle.cfm?page=2
& articleid=487&cid=2series of screenshots released prior to the buy-out, they showcased working depth-of-field blur and motion-blur filters in Quake 3 Arena. To my knowledge, these effects should be present in modern nVidia graphics cards proceeding the purchase. I could be mistaken, but I'm fairly certain the image processing technology 3dfx was working on was included in said purchase. With that said, I'm certain many improvements upon these technologies could easily be made given the processing power of newer video cards. -

WHY?!
That device looks unweildy and is undoubtedly exceeding the max weight limit intel or amd would want you to use for a heat sink. Quite frankly i don't see the point of a computer that requires you to fill it daily in order to run it. Overclocking should only go so far, they have some nice professional compressor based solutions that should be able to achieve similar performance without the hassle of purchasing dry ice on a regular basis. One I know is called vapochill. Dry ice with no load is around -75 C whereas the vapochill should be around -45 C
http://www.hothardware.com/viewarticle.cfm?article id=565&cid=9
And if you were to go the dry ice route, since AFAIK dry ice isnt conductive, why don't they just build the entire computer into an icebox (not the hard drive), and put a regular passive heat sink on the processor rather than construct that monstrosity of plumbing. I would think the overclocked memory and chipset would benefit equally as well. Oh and of course throw in some sacks of silica gel in there, don't want to have condensation now.:] -
Re:ATI deserves #1
Toppling 3dfx by creating the best hardware? Nope, they did it the Microsoft way:
1. steal technology from 3dfx
2. make loads of money using stolen tech
3. buy 3dfx
4. let 3dfx to rot
http://www.hothardware.com/viewarticle.cfm?article id=433
Feel free to look up more (just query nvidia patent 3dfx on Google). -

Re:Heat reduction?
Check out this review to learn a little bit more about the Pentium M. According to their information, and what I saw on Intel's website - the Pentium M's can have a juntion temperature of 100 degrees C (where the proc meets the paste). They ran their Pentium M at 35.5 degrees C overclocked to 2.53GHz!!! They said that P4s idle at 53 degrees C. So I would say this is pretty good. Someone else is more than welcome to find other temperatures for a more balanced comparison.

Apple wasn't first, dumbass.
Jesus F Christ, just because Apple comes out with a product with the word "mini" in it doesn't mean they invented it! Or are you going to be giving credit to Apple for the Mini Cooper and the years old concept of the "MiniPC". You goddamned Apple fanboys need to get a grip.

Some of these make a little more sense because they benchmark the 6200TC against some of its direct competitors in the low end instead of against a mid range card.
I think Gamers Depot's conclusion is a bit off too. What's notable isn't that it is slower than enthusiast cards. Of course it is. What's surprising is how well it still runs the very newest games, despite the drawbacks associated with that pricing range. -

Re:Of course...Ummmm...from what source did you get this information.
Toms Hardware says otherwise.
Yeah, the charts are quite a bit old. But the price drops from both companies since then seem to be very comparable.
Well, I'll begin by stating that since I consider accelerated OpenGL drivers for Linux to be an important part of "bang" that pretty well kills the ATI lineup right off the bat.
;-)However, looking at these results with the 9600XT at around $138 and the 5900 XT at around $173 (current prices), the 5900 comes out well ahead on FPS/$. The 9800 Pros are somewhat more expensive (~$200) but offer a slight performance edge - I'd say about even on bang-per-buck - using Windows that is. Under Linux, no comparison.

Print Article Link and some thoughts

ATI's goal is to offer a complete HDTV solution for an MSRP of $199. The package will include the HDTV Wonder, a Remote Wonder and a yet to be determined antenna. Throw in a potent Multimedia Center 9 and you have the makings for a sweet HDTV experience. To get the full experience of the card, users will need to use it in conjunction with an ATI graphics card to take advantage of such features as ThruView and Video Desktop, but the card will work with other DirectX 9 compatible OEM products otherwise.
Too bad MythPC's track record for supporting ATI hardware hasn't been the greatest. If your on the windows side of the fence I suggest looking at Media Portal. Its fairly new to the HTPC scene but looks promising and works with just about any card.
Being a Radeon 7500 All in Wonder user I'm very happy to see the HDTV Wonder as a PCI card. I was sure when I bought my AGP 7500 AIW it was going to be the last card I would need in a very long time. -
Re:Keyboard? Try an IR Remote.
I also use Girder and an ATI Remote Wonder for my HTPC setup. The ATI remote came bundled with a Radeon 7500 All In Wonder and they work flawlessly together. The MyHTPC software also works wonders. There is an ATI Remote Wonder plugin available for MyHTPC too.
As for the keyboard and mouse, I use a Logitech cordless mouse and keyboard which does the job nicely. I keep the mouse on the coffee table and the keyboard in one of the drawers. The only tricky part is keeping the RF receiver on the computer far enough away from the components in your home theater as the cord on the unit is not very long.
I also have a 4 port USB hub running to a spot under the couch that allows me to quickly connect or disconnect things like USB Thumb Drives or USB Gamepads. I use the gamepads for many of the games on the system like GTA Vice City and MAME. Specifically I like the Gravis Gamepad Pro (BB $15, Nice mapping software), the Nyko AirFlo PC (BB $20, Dual Analog sticks, Air Flow technology), and if you can find it the GF USB Control Pad (BB $10, Dual Analog sticks). All of the gamepads work well with Girder and the games I use them for. Sometimes it is nice to have 3 or 4 different gamepads for N64 Emulators because it is easier to know which gamepad you are configuring. Before I had 4 Gravis Gamepad Pro's which was a pain because I had to label them 1 - 4 but windows would not allow me to change their names.
Of course VNC is a must but aside from that if you get your bindings tight in girder you can do almost anything with MyHTPC and a good remote. -

Re:MXM looks exactly like....
I suppose by 'exactly' you mean 'completely different'.
Apparantly it's "EASIER TO INSERT THAN AN ALIEN PROBE" though, according to the article.
I wonder if MXM comes with that feature? I'd hate to be part of Alienware's demographic.

Terabyte = 1,000MB?
Did anybody else notice this in the article?
"With Windows XP 64-bit Edition, the new memory limit is 16 terabytes, or 16,000MB (264 = 18,446,744,073,709,551,161) and all of that RAM will be available to the OS and applications."
I assume that is a typo, otherwise I've had a terabyte of RAM, and 80 terabytes of disk storage, for the past year... -
