Lynn's document for download
I disagree with CISCO's position and believe that every effort should be made to release this information. The more it becomes available, the sooner CISCO will fix the problem.

Newcular World Order
They left out the address of AQ Khan, who runs a mailorder nukes biz in Pakistan. Just put an account# from Libya, Iran or North Korea, or maybe Saudi Arabia on your order, and you can get all the tutorial you need. You'll still have to get the fuel from somewhere, but there's plenty of Russian, Kazakh or even good ol' Italian mafia dealers. Try the Carlyle Group - they might be your one-stop-shop, including the negotiations that signal your initiation into the nuclear club.

Not exactly a new idea
Birdris is a free DOS game by Andrew Bird (who does not seem to have a web site) from 1996 that does the same thing. According to the readme, the author's score was 24 lines at the time of release.

Re:Another one?
Theres another open source codec already in existence that uses wavelets, Rududu. Why couldn't they have worked along with this project? It looks quite promising.

Re:Incredibly foolish articleIf it ever consistently failed to return useful results, or was discovered to be misleading you, it would be replaced by a better competitor.
I'd like to think that. Certainly if it failed to return useful results, that would damage it. But I don't think one could compete with Google simply on the basis of "Hey, we don't filter out the Anarchist's Cookbook!" (Note: Google doesn't censor this as of this writing.)
People who are completely unable to trust end up in mental hospitals.
The kind of people who end up in mental hospitals are those who believe everybody is involved in a huge conspiracy to "get" them. This is an irrational belief that everybody else's self-interest runs counter to one's own.
Belief that leaders of organizations prefer that their members quietly accept the leaders' views is based upon a rational belief that people prefer others' self-interest to be aligned with their own. I'd like it if everyone agreed with me.
:)A desire to have one's own self-interest be independent of anyone else's (not opposite, just independent) isn't paranoia. It's based on sound evolutionary principles. In Ghost in the Shell , Motoko Kusanagi says very accurately:
"If we all reacted the same we'd be predictable. And there's more than one way to view a situation. What's true for the group is also true for the individual. It's simple. Overspecialize and you breed in weakness. It's slow death."

Re:Note on Li
Don't be ridiculous. He could take a bit part in two Matrix for $3M or he could get the lead role in his own movie for $9.5. That's a no-brainer. Even if the movie tanks, he's still up $6M on the deal with a lead credit and free time to make another movie.

Re:Yes
It wasn't the web connection at this company that lead to our infection. Two weeks ago our genius security team patches all of the servers. This past weekend, one person brought their laptop home and, upon returning, infected most of the desktops.
Does anyone remember the Maginot Line? It wasn't necessarily bad systems that brought us to a 4 hour halt, as the patches have been available for two weeks. It was system admins who disabled WindowsUpdate on the "standard desktop" then didn't bother to patch the desktops here... knowing we have MANY laptop users. -

Yeah, I know what you mean.
I used images.google to find a picture of this "cannon g5" and boy, you weren't kidding! That's the least-camera-like thing I've ever seen! -
Re:MythTV...
You forgot one very important detail, and that's the fact that with MythTV, you are actually in control of the device recording TV shows for you.
Currently, for example, I have some John Howe as the menu background on my MythTV box. But that's minor compared to the fact that my box doesn't record programs that advertisers think I want to see. -
Reiser
Yes, today I associate the name Reiser with the Reiser filesystem. But, first I thought of a French cartoonist Jean Marc Reiser (see a tribute page[no, I'm not French]). If you haven't seen his cartoons before, go check them out. Beware, it is dirty underware humor, literally, and any connection with file systems seem farflung indeed.

Re:plot holes
While a bit off-topic, I feel this is the perfect time to visit the idea of paradoxes and time travel. It may be argued that this can be explained by them eventually going back to 1985 and getting married, having kids, etc. This is a valid argument, but what about a more exotic situation?
Example: What if Marty from the future killed Marty from 1985? How could that happen?
Simpler example: Imagine a billiard ball that has a trajectory that takes it into a time portal that goes back in time by a small portion of a second. However, before the ball makes it to the portal, it comes out (naturally, it went back) and knocks the original ball off it's trajectory so that it never hits the portal. This situation actually has a fairly logical conclusion (believe it or not). Suppose instead that the ball was headed towards the portal, but in such a way as to miss it. However, when the ball goes through the portal (hold on a sec...) it goes back and hits itself onto a trajectory that forces it into the portal (there it is!).
I know this example is confusing, so I provided these links to better explainations. The second link has a nice diagram demonstrating this. Credit must be given to Kip Thorne for coming up with this solution to the famous "Grandfather" paradox.
Anyone else have any thoughts on the idea of time travel and paradoxes? I am of the opinion that these paradoxes prevent time travel from occuring. Another popular belief if that time travel is possible, but only in the forward direction. Yet another belief is that when you travel through time, you actually enter a different "universe" from our own. This theory is directly tied in to the "multiverse" theory. Any other insight? -
PC Centric???
What about games that underwent major overhauls before they were finished...like the origonal version of Syndicate for the Amiga?
Or even the unreleased adventure games for 8-bit machines...I seem to remember an unreleased "Battle Tech" game... (these tended to be "unfinished" as well)
What about the upgraded Hired Guns (3D) for the Amiga/PC?
Then we've got unfinished/unreleased games for various consoles like the CD32...
Come to think of it...this must be the short list(everything is from the 90's)...where can one find a more complete list of "unfinished adventures"??? -
Scientific Cooking...There's a molecular biologist named Hervé This who writes a monthly column about scientific cooking in the french edition of Scientific American. He explains everything, like what is a mayonaise, why do you need to knead bread, how to invent new cooking methods...
He has several books out that I'd recommand to any french-speaking cooking geek: Casseroles et éprouvettes, Traité élémentaire de cuisine, Les Secrets de la casserole...
Some of his recipes are online; at least try the chocolate mayonnaise.
And for those of you who want a big classic list of recipes, I have 10000 of them in a big Windows Help file (5Mb), still all in french. He, at least that's one thing this language is good for!

You're both right.
We have sentimental attachments to Star Wars because it's myth lite: the orphaned hero, the vision quest, etc., etc. Many of us have seen or read the Joseph Campbell take on the Star Wars trilogy, and I won't bother rehashing it here.
The advertising and tie-ins prolong the life of our sentimentality, way, way beyond what its natural lifespan probably would have been. But make no mistake: Star Wars succeeded because it was a greco-roman myth masquerading as a western masquerading as sci-fi.
Not to mention Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford were f***ing hot in that movie. -

Please stop stealing
Linux users!!!
.Ogg files are nothing more than intellectual property theft! Please, if you value all that is good in the world, like puppies, cotton candy, rainy sunday afternoons, french chicks with no pants on and too much eye makeup, please switch to an approved media format like .wmv, and STOP STEALING INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY! -

Re:i can do that too
Yes, Linux support for Epoc devices is abysmal at the moment. Hopefully SyncML will help with this, though.
The lack of available synchronization options between Linux software and a Psion PDA is why I've considered switching my trusty Psion Series 5mx to a Palm.
Luckily, the is at least some information for Epoc-Linux interoperability on http://5-tux.ifrance.com/5-tux/. It is in French, though.

Sorry but it won't work.
If there's anything our good friends the French should have learned, it's that building an impenetrable defensive line is ludicrous. Why? Because you'll just have them go around your defenses through Belgium.

Nautilus preview release?
Based on what I've seen on the Nautilus mailing list, this is going to be a *very* fun piece of software to use. There are more great screenshots at this site.
I just asked on the Gnome news site, and I'll ask here, too; does anyone have a ETA on an official Nautilus preview release?
I'd love to try out Nautilus and give some feedback to the developers, but I tried building all the required packages from CVS and just don't have the time or perserverance to work out all the macro build problems.
Heck, I'd settle some tarballs or RPMs that someone could throw together for us unwashed, CVS-impaired masses. ;) -
