Re:Oh boy
it IS stealing as our current law defines it
It is neither stealing in actuality or as defined by law. Stealing something deprives the owner of the object being stolen. What it is is copy infringment.
Movies, I suppose, are the rub - these really do cost a tremendous amount of money to create
Not all movies cost a lot to make. For instance The Blair Witch Project was made by some college students for a project and they didn't have the money of a major studio yet in All-Time Worldwide Box office receipts it comes in at 230 making $240,500,000.

Re:Who needs Arnold?
Even the fourth film apparently made it into the cinema
And was so execrable that the director pulled his name from the film (which is why, when I went and saw this turd at the theater -- because I'm a diehard Hellraiser fan -- the credits gave the director as "Alan Smithee," the agreed-upon fake name to use for such circumstances). I guess I should have realized that adding a Sci Fi element to Hellraiser was a mistake. "Hey, it's Hellraiser in space! Cool!" There were plenty of scenes that were shown piecemeal in the trailers which never made it into the final cut of the film, so it's possible there were many last-minute changes the director didn't approve of.
The fifth (Inferno) was actually a decent film, probably better than the fourth, but I believe it was a direct-to-video release. That's about where I stopped watching; I saw the last one (number 8, aka "Hellworld") in the bargain bin at Fry's or Best Buy recently. Didn't even pique my interest. Yet there are still enough fanatics out there willing to buy this stuff that the franchise will live on.
Terminator 3 was a repudiation of everything that James Cameron had to say about free will and choice in the first two Terminator movies, so it's no surprise he bowed out of making a third film. It was really being pushed by Arnold anyway. With the franchise now torn away from its philosophical and artistic roots, it's a lot easier to rob it of the last vestiges of its old self and pimp the results to the buying public. Three more films? That's cake. The Hellraiser film franchise is only one example of making this paradigm work. I could also mention the Prophecy franchise -- those are still being made, now without Christopher Walken. Heck, they even had a crossover between the Hellraiser and Prophecy film franchises!
Most shocking coincidence I've seen thus far: Kari Wuhrer seems to show up in some of the direct-to-video releases late in the life of these franchises. (She shows up in at least one of the later Hellraiser films, and in the fourth Prophecy film.) Anyone taking bets to see if she'll show up in one of these new Terminator films? I wonder if her presence is an indication that a franchise has jumped the shark...? -

Re:Who needs Arnold?I have seen the future, and it's direct to DVD Funny, but it's not totally implausible if they want to milk the franchise enough.
Remember Hellraiser, that late-80s sado-masochistic horror film? If you do, you're probably aware that there was a sequel. You might even remember the noticably lower-budget MTV-ised third entry in the series.
But did you know they made eight of the damn things?
I'm not kidding; Netcraft.... erm, IMDB confirms it. Even the fourth film apparently made it into the cinema; but 5, 6, 7 and 8(!!) were straight to video. I've never seen them, have no interest in doing so, and suspect that most people feel the same way. My guess is that they're low-budget efforts aimed at the diehard obsessive fans; a loyal but small audience.
Now, the Terminator franchise (I loathe that word, but it's appropriate) is- and will probably remain- more popular than Hellraiser. But if they start churning out films without Arnie (or any of the other famous actors), over-milk the formula, and cut the budgets, I can see their appeal going down *fast*. The hardcore fanbase will turn up regardless (even if they bitch about it). However, such audiences overestimate their importance and are dwarfed by the fickle masses that *any* mainstream cinema film needs to fill multiplexes.
Could "Terminator" films end up going straight to video? Sure. -

Re:Solo and ChewbaccaI have always thought that Pat Mastroianni would make a good Han Solo (since Harrison Ford is getting a little on the old side). A few rollicking Solo and Chewbacca adventures (and I mean adventures, not soap operas) geared more for the grown up crowd might just hit the spot. George just needs to get a competent author to put together the right script and he could conceivably get the Star Wars train wreck back on the tracks. I think Nathan Fillion would be awesome in the role. I don't see Lucas doing anything as clever as getting in a competent author though.

Important information on guessing robotsCNN HQ Stormed By Elite GNAA Operatives, Classified 9/11 Information Broadcast
CNN HQ Stormed By Elite GNAA Operatives, Classified 9/11 Information Broadcast
pagga (GNAP) - Manchester, AfghanistanFollowing a covert infiltration of their Tel-Aviv headquarters by a crack team of elite GNAA agents, Zionist news organization CNN today publicly declassified top-secret information regarding the September 11 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center, information which was until now actively supressed by the Zionist Occupied Governments of the West. Thousands of jewish viewers across America choked on their evening halvah (muslim babies) as, in a primetime broadcast, Paula Zahn (herself a latent jew) was forced at dongpoint to reveal the awful truth behind the 9/11 attacks which the rest of the civilized (read: non-judaic) world has long suspected: Jews Did WTC.
Fast-forwarding past the 1080p CP on the greasy HD-DVD handed to them by bedpan, the CNN production team played back the devastating GNAA-compiled footage whilst Paula Zahn held back a rectal prolapse to present their findings. Irrefutable proof from highly credible sources (such as regarded public information portals jewsdidwtc.com & Encyclopedia Dramatica) was disclosed in order to finally put an end to the debate. In the interests of equal representation, a token jew was present for the post-footage discussion, together with a panel of gay niggers.
In the unlikely event that you missed this historic broadcast, it has been archived at JewTube.
Want to know more? See the proof for yourself @ http://www.jewsdidwtc.com and Encyclopedia Dramatica.

Re:I saw a different problemGNAA announces switch to Windows Vista
GNAA announces switch to Windows Vistafellacious (GNAP) Intercourse, PA - Windows Vista appears to finally be taking off, at least within one Fortune 100 company. The GNAA had for the past 13 years been using Red Hat Linux and it's successor, Fedora Core, but growing discontent with the free software operating system forced CTO Jmax to declare on Wednesday that the company was to be switching its entire infrastructure to the new version of Windows, effective immediately. "I'm not going to theatrically claim that I wasn't expecting to have to do this," Jmax said. "This has been coming for quite some time." The GNAA's troubles with Red Hat's Linux system included chronic governance problems, a persistent failure to maintain key repositories, a complex and undocumented submission process which has kept the GNAA's free trolling utilities off the Red Hat-based desktops of thousands of would-be trolls, inability to keep RPM up to date, and a failure to address the problem of Firefox not crashing a entire computer when the user loads Last Measure. "The deal-breaker, though, was when a key Last Measure server remained down for four hours while our entire Intercourse development team tried desperately to bring it up despite not having statically-linked package manager binaries." What had happened was Dikky, visiting from Norway, wanted to play the child pornography mod of Doom 3 on that server- which had to drag several libraries with it. "In addition," said Jmax, "several key software applications used in the GNAA's corporate workflow are proprietary software- which means that they had to be run in an Ubuntu compatibility environment anyway." However, being as those unnamed applications were written in C#.NET, "We expect that our transition to Windows Vista will come off without a hitch."
About Jmax:
The CTO of the GNAA, Jmax also has a seat on Microsoft's board of directors. His resume can be accessed at http://goatse.fr/.
About Windows Vista:
The fastest-growing desktop operating system on the market, Windows Vista combines the legendary security of Windows 98 with the legendary ease of use of those computer interfaces you see in the movies into one ultra-fast, ultra-stable computing platform.
About Red Hat:
A failure of a computer company, Red Hat burns through investor money while giving its products away for free. It is currently under investigation from the SEC for misuse of invested funds, and being sued by the GNAA for breach of contract for sucking more than specified in the GNAA's contract with Red Hat.

Stasi files
there might be some Western leaders as well who would not like their secret files to be made public...
No "might" necessary, there are Western leaders and others who don't want their Stasi (secret police) files public. Former West German chancellor Kohl successfully sued to keep his files under wraps.
That's for the simple reason that those files often contain the most private details of what the Stasi had assembled using bugs and other means. Besides, nobody can easily check what is true and what they might have falsified in those files. After all, we're talking about a totalitarian regime which shot people trying to leave the country illegally.
However, all that doesn't mean that there won't be investigations if German authorities find something interesting in those files. So some people do have to fear that their past surfaces, but not from publication of the files.

It's all about advertising and other evil goals.
They develop a technique to track viewers eye movements and a computer helps them improve the commercials to maximize profits by modifying the models (plastic surgery) and hypnotizing the viewers. And all that crap.
And then they use the technique to try to take over the government. Pretty deep stuff for 1981. -
Das Leben der Anderen
If you get a chance to see Das Leben der Anderen ("The Lives of Others", http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0405094/), definitely do not miss it. It is a slightly fantastic conflation of plausible events tied together with a story about fictional characters, but it is said, by people who lived in DDR at the time, to be chillingly accurate (though not without problems, it's a movie after all.)
I'd certainly enjoy hearing from anyone who lived in the DDR, who has seen this film; particularly if they had personal interaction with the STASI. -

Re:In a world without copyright...
Most people don't realize how close a match you have to have to be infringing. You can write a story about a young wizard who fights evil to protect his family and friends from dark magical forces. That young wizard can even be called Harry Potter, and there will be no copyright infringement! Yes it was OK for J.K Rowling to write a story about a young magician named Harry Potter, even though Sonny Bono was in a movie a decade earlier with a young magician named Harry Potter. Sonny Bono did help alter copyright law, so it must be OK. Would he be considered a subject matter expert?
Otherwise, J.K Rowlings Harry Potter books, that came out 10 years after the movie Troll would all have to be taken off the shelves and re-worked.

Yeah, but why did the feds need to investigate anything beyond the actual web-comic? I mean, for any sane, normal person, it would be obvious that the person complaining needs to make his case a bit stronger. At least before the feds should start wasting taxpayer money on it. This should have been forgotten away in a closet (or wastebasket) the moment it came in.

Re:PokerOh, go see 'Pirates of Silicon Valley'. You'll enjoy it. I enjoyed it, but if you see this entertaining made-for-TV movie, understand that this movie gets many facts wrong. I guess the real stories weren't interesting enough for prime time television. If you know the real stories, this movie's inaccuracies might be annoying enough to ruin your viewing experience.
For Slashdot readers, I think a far more fascinating (and accurate) video is Robert X. Cringely's PBS documentary Triumph of the Nerds: The Rise of Accidental Empires. I think this documentary is where Apple fanboys got their often-quoted "M$ has no taste" line (from that black turtleneck guy). The transcript is available at PBS's site.

Re:too funny
The story existed long ago, but the character's likenesses can still be copyrighted.
Not all sets of seven dwarves look like that. Same would go for an "Aladdin" character- you can put anyone in a turban and call him Aladdin, but if he looks like this you could get in trouble for infringing on original artwork.
