Re:All Hail Terry Gilliam
Where is "Brazil"? Where is "12 Monkeys"?
Great movies (Brazil is actually one of my favorite movies of all time), but hardly Science Fiction in the movie sense. In the movies, science fiction equals space opera, or at least big special futuristic effects. In literature, it encompasses a wild variety of genres of which space opera is only a very small part.
Would Brazil and 12 Monkeys be included, I guess we would also see The Truman Show, Stalker, A Clockwork Orange, Dr. Strangelove, and Jakob's Ladder on the list. All SF and great movies, but hardly recognised as such by the average movie goer.
Then again - maybe it is the voting process itself. Ask the average movie goer to name his favorites and you may end up with a list of reasonably good movies, but certainly not with the best (or most contraversial) movies. Still, that does not explain 2001 on the list.

Re:Too bad the movie sucks
I don't like overexplaining either... let me use my imagination a little bit during those two hours.
Blade Runner would have truly sucked balls if they actually showed how the replicants were created by Tyrell Corporation. Steven Spielberg (who specializes in pleasing dumb audiences) would certainly have wasted screen time showing you every disgusting gooey detail. Just look at what he did with his movie based on a Philip K. Dick story, Minority Report. Despite the presence of Tom Cruise in the cast, that could have been a good movie. It just needed more deleted scenes. -
Re:Hmm....
I think we are acting like a dick because the current myopic administration is staffed by dicks... this movie's subject and main character remind me of Bush...I just wish Karma would eventually catch up to Bush and his failed policies.

Re:Mmmmmm
Me, too.
And nobody can beat Jodie for doing cold and cerebral. That's why I was amused to see her doing comedy and sexy in "Maverick". In this last one, "Inside Man", she also broke tradition by being the "bad girl" of the flick. Not to mention "A Very Long Engagement", when she went over the top and did a hot sex scene - at 43!
Jodie is hot because she is intense, not funny (but in person she can be very funny - but it's not her main personality trait.)
Interestingly, Jodie WAS in an X-Files episode: doing a voice over. See here. It's going to be replayed this Tuesday on TNT, even!
According to IMDB, the following is even more coincidental:
The voice of Betty the tattoo is spoken by Jodie Foster. During the first scene in which we hear Betty convince the man (who has the tattoo) to assault his neighbor, the music playing in the background is "Doesn't Somebody Want to be Wanted" by the Partridge Family. One of Jodie Foster's earlier roles was in episode 3.18 of "The Partridge Family" (1970), "The Eleven Year Itch" in which she punches Danny. -

Uhhh, Dana Scully == %SEXSYMBOL% ?!?
...the delectable Special Agent Dana Scully... Julianne Moore will be portraying the hot science babe G-woman...
Guys, Julianne Moore was born on December 3, 1960, which would make her - gosh - almost 50 years old.
Somehow I'm having a hard time visualizing Special Agent Dana Scully as a GMILF [Grandmother I'd like to...]. -
Not fake
This one is true, or at least the movie is in pre-production (which means it hasn't even begun filming yet and may still yet be cancelled). As for Gillian Anderson, she's taking silly bit parts in the fluffy behind-the-scenes dramas like Tristram Shandy, I don't know why she's so concerned about escaping her most famous and profitable role.

My Letter to the NY Daily News Reporters
Dear Ivan Pereira, Michael Saul, Alison Gendar,
"In previous incarnations [of the Grand Theft Auto series], players advanced through the game by killing cops, selling pornography to children and killing prostitutes." http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/2007/03/3 1/2007-03-31_pols_rage_as_vid_game_takes_shot_at_c ity-4.html
After reading the above-linked article, I believe there are some discrepancies that need to be brought to your attention. I have extensively played Grand Theft Auto 1, 2, 3, Vice City, and San Andreas, yet I have never encountered any opportunities to sell pornography to children, nor is there is no way to advance in the game through killing police officers or prostitutes.
In every game in the Grand Theft Auto series, killing a prostitute within view of a police officer will cause him to try to subdue and arrest you. If you kill a police officer, more will come in squad-cars, attempting to stop you. If you continue to kill officers, SWAT teams will attempt to subdue you. Eventually, the National Guard will arrive to subdue you. When your character is subdued by law enforcement, he returns to the game outside of a hospital, without weapons and with a hefty monetary fine. Similar to real life, attacking police officers has consequences, none of which are good, and in the end, you can't win.
I am not a lawyer, nor am I making any sort of threat of legal action (I am in no way connected to Take-Two Interactive Software), but making false, harmful claims about a game's content sounds like libel to me. As I can not trust the New York Daily News to provide accurate, unbiased information, I will never purchase an issue, and advise my friends and family likewise.
If I am wrong about selling pornography to children, please tell me in which games, and in what location it is found. I would like to verify the content, and if it is present, I will gladly inform everyone who will listen.
To close on a slight tangent, Liberty City is modeled after New York City. On November 15, 2005 the video game True Crime: New York City http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/adventure/truecrime2/i ndex.html?q=True%20Crime was released. Surely you can guess where this game takes place. Yet, there was no public outcry regarding True Crime: New York City's setting.
Like it or not, video games have become an art form, just like movies. When such movies as "Escape from New York" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082340/ are allowed to exist, the average age of video game players is 33 http://www.theesa.com/facts/top_10_facts.php , and games have ratings with more depth than movies http://www.esrb.org/ratings/ratings_guide.jsp , why are games held to a different standard? -
Idiocracy
Depressing polls like this make me think that the evolutionary scenario portrayed in the movie "Idiocracy" is already happening.

Directed by Jack Thompson.
You mean Jerry Bruckheimer right? It sounds like his kind of film...lots of explosions and mind numbing dialog combined with nauseating, obvious, and clichéd plot developments. -
Re:In unrelated news...> And while we're miring in the suck here, keep in mind that these 48% get to vote and their vote counts just as much as the most educated, wise, worldly person in the country. Hurrah for a system which encourages, promotes and maintains the consensus. Even when they're idiots!
Worse that that, they outbreed the enclued, too. Welcome to Idiocracy!
(There's a reason Atlas Shrugged ended the way it did, and that it didn't end like Idiocracy. Rand never anticipated that even the starving survivors of the collapse of society would ultimately outbreed the few surviving scientists and engineers. As Heinlein might have said, evolution, like the moon, is a harsh mistress, and there ain't no such thing as a free lunch.)

Re:ErratumYes, I see now that they're girls. I missed that. My Fark-brain filtered it out as some advert for a calendar girls site. I'm thinking Bound here.

wonderfulGreat. At least someone realizes that corn isn't the answer. The answer is hemp, which among other industrial uses is great for biofuel production.
Before you say it, no, we don't need to think of the children. Industrial hemp contains less than 0.3% THC, as opposed to the 20%-30% that is found in unfertilized female plants that are grown for drug use. But God forbid anyone grow hemp: we all know what evils marijuana can cause. -

Solaris and Lem
I am old fan of Stanislav Lems work. I have to say i would never call American version a remake (Are we calling all versions of "Hamlet" a remake after first one?" Tarkovsky is brilliant director, but unfortunately i have to say for director of his class borth "Solaris" and "Stalker" are plain failures. They still show his high class and much better that a lot of movies out there, but if you compare them to the rest of his work you can say that he is not really good Sci-fi director. You also need to realize that American and Russian version are talking about different things, and yes American Version is not following the book exactly
,but bring the central idea of the movie (not the book) better and that part of artistic process, finding something in the book and making a movie about it. Probably it will be more fair to call movie differently but say it's based on Solaris novell in this case (you can read lem comments about second movie here : http://www.lem.pl/cyberiadinfo/english/kiosk/kiosk .htm#solstation [www.lem.pl] ) Russian version unfortunately didn't really cover main idea of the book and tried to do too many things at the same time. You can read Lem comments about russian version here.: http://alek.xspaces.org/2005/07/28/lem-on-tarkovsk y [xspaces.org]
Also you can read some ideas about book here : http://www.lem.pl/cyberiadinfo/english/dziela/sola ris/solarispl.htm#1 [www.lem.pl]
In general I have to say Lem probably wouldn't like the second movie either, but i still must say that doesn't make it a bad movie, it just probably should have have a different name and say --- based on the characters and event from the book instead of being called Solaris. As with many good books there are usually interesting ideas in them that authors might not have originally planned to explore. So it take good director and script writer to explore those. In my own opinion and based of what i know about Lem work i would say second movie bring some of those idea better that Tarkovsky did. If you really want to see great work by Tarkovsky you should see Andrey Rublev. But this is not science fiction. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060107/ [imdb.com] -
Re:amenSpeaking of, if you like this stuff, you should watch the BBC sitcom Absolute Power. Yeah, it's very good, but maybe a bit *too* cynical
:-)
I imported the series 2 DVD from Australia (still the only place it's out AFAICT), sat down to make a region-free copy and found it was already region 1-6, woohoo, so it just worked! (for me anyway, can't promise it'd be the same if you get one, etc.) -
They're kidding, right?
FTFA: "SEGA® Corporation and Nintendo Co. Ltd. today made a historical announcement that two of the biggest icons in the entertainment industry, Mario(TM) and Sonic(TM), are joining forces to star in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games."
Are these guys serious about Mario and Sonic being among the biggest players in the entertainment industry? The industry as a whole goes much further afield than video games. Mario is a "star" in gaming, but has little to know cross-over appeal that I know of. Mario Bros. Movie http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108255/ anyone? Seems like there is a Sonic cartoon, but since I don't watch cartoons anymore I can't gauge the overall interest in that, but seems to me that it wouldn't be that great. Certainly not among the biggest in entertainment. Unless one or both go to rehab and shave their heads.
Aside from this, how is the Wii going to incorporate the power pad?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_Pad? Sorry for the obligatory wiki quote. Any ideas? -
Re:SolutionYeah, it's better to let a thousand years of hatred fester another thousand, rather than try to do anything at all against it. Bush is the stupid one. Well... Since his "solution" seems to center around making the former US-hating people hate it even more, and in the same stroke make most of the rest of the world resent the US, I'd say yes. He is the stupid one.
Violence, coercion and threats is never a good way to make someone like or respect you.
I fact, it'll almost always have the opposite effect.
There are some people who won't listen to you unless you've got them under gun-point, but Bush seems to lash out in gross overreaction at anything and everything all the time.
To paraphrase from Dennis Leary's Lock'N Load:
"My foreign policy? Fuck you! My domestic policy? Fuuuuuuuck you!"
Seems to me like the good Mr Bush have stolen both his foreign and domestic policies from him. ^_^ -

amen
It's a bit chatty in places - and this sort of work will always be subjective - but it reads to me as a good professional briefing by an efficient PR outfit.
I totally agree. My first thought, before even finishing reading the memo, was, dang, how do I get these people to work for me?
Makes me wonder whether the "leak" was accidental, or they were getting free publicity :)
Speaking of, if you like this stuff, you should watch the BBC sitcom Absolute Power. -

GNAA announces switch to Windows VistaGNAA announces switch to Windows Vista
fellacious (GNAP) Intercourse, PA - Windows Vista appears to finally be taking off, at least within one Fortune 100 company. The GNAA had for the past 13 years been using Red Hat Linux and it's successor, Fedora Core, but growing discontent with the free software operating system forced CTO Jmax to declare on Wednesday that the company was to be switching its entire infrastructure to the new version of Windows, effective immediately. "I'm not going to theatrically claim that I wasn't expecting to have to do this," Jmax said. "This has been coming for quite some time." The GNAA's troubles with Red Hat's Linux system included chronic governance problems, a persistent failure to maintain key repositories, a complex and undocumented submission process which has kept the GNAA's free trolling utilities off the Red Hat-based desktops of thousands of would-be trolls, inability to keep RPM up to date, and a failure to address the problem of Firefox not crashing a entire computer when the user loads Last Measure. "The deal-breaker, though, was when a key Last Measure server remained down for four hours while our entire Intercourse development team tried desperately to bring it up despite not having statically-linked package manager binaries." What had happened was Dikky, visiting from Norway, wanted to play the child pornography mod of Doom 3 on that server- which had to drag several libraries with it. "In addition," said Jmax, "several key software applications used in the GNAA's corporate workflow are proprietary software- which means that they had to be run in an Ubuntu compatibility environment anyway." However, being as those unnamed applications were written in C#.NET, "We expect that our transition to Windows Vista will come off without a hitch."
About Jmax:
The CTO of the GNAA, Jmax also has a seat on Microsoft's board of directors. His resume can be accessed at http://goatse.fr/.

About Red Hat:

More about the Resident Teenager.
Really? You think that's the meaning of A Hard Day's Night? Methinks you're reading way too much into the lyrics:
I would be, but I'm quoting the movie, not the song. See for yourself.
SIMON (playing his ace) Only Susan Campey, our resident teenager. You'll have to love her. She's your symbol.
GEORGE Oh, you mean that posh bird who gets everything wrong?
SIMONI beg your pardon?
GEORGE Oh, yes, the lads frequently gather round the T.V. set to watch her for a giggle. Once we even all sat down and wrote these letters saying how gear she was and all that rubbish.
SIMON She's a trend setter. It's her profession!
GEORGE She's a drag. A well-known drag. We turn the sound down on her and say rude things.
SIMON Get him out of here!!
I can and will say the same thing about paid bloggers. If you can't recognize it, you can't buy it. If it is not cool, you can't push it that way. The effort is doomed before it starts.

Re:really?
You shouldn't have posted AC... you're point is valid. Half the shit people post on forums is just over reactions to their own personal inadequacies, fears, and weaknesses. Anonymity gives people an opportunity to explore emotions that they cannot excercise and those can be very ugly... but I agree that the likelihood of these threats being real is probably pretty low.
The fact is the Internet is full of people and people are messed up mother fuckers... and if any of you jack asses dares to disagree with me I'm going to post photoshop images of you being eaten by sharks or cut up by the Texas Chainsaw Massacre guy, the Matthew McConaughey one, not the classic or the remake.
